@nhinkle I like the "Don't blame me if you think you're going to win a certain thing and you don't."

And, for the grand prize, the "Most Valued Super User"
@nhinkle: Using the "thanks! me too!" prevention is a good start there. :D
Or wait
we nominate others, nevermind. >_<
These tag clouds are bad for your mind.

superuser.com/questions/323111/… i have no idea how anyone could work, knowing there's a keylogger installed

@JourneymanGeek That'd be horrible. Paranoia alone...
I mean, I hate using school computers alone, because teachers can view our screen

@TomWijsman: the person who posted the "how do i get my torrent to go crazy" has some pretty... out there questions. he seems quantity over quality

and one day while I was working my mouse started jerking around, and I was concerned. My teacher likes joking around

12:08 AM
@SimonSheehan: quite honestly, unless i had no choice. i would not work in a place like that

@JourneymanGeek Indeed. Or bring in your own computer :P

@SimonSheehan: he's explicitly not allowed to ;p

@JourneymanGeek Oh my. Quitting time!

bringing my own system would be ideal, since i'm a little anal retentive and need my systems set up just so

@JourneymanGeek 112 questions....2 answers. Yeah, i think you're right.

12:09 AM
its not actually the keylogger, its the 'my boss is a control freak'

He does have some interesting questions though

@JourneymanGeek I always had those thoughts like how to type in order for a keylogger not to find out.

@TomWijsman: personally, if i suspected my boss had a keylogger, i'd work out some way to create loads of random, useless data ;p

The only way I can think of is to use your mouse to change the text position and type the password in a different order...
@JourneymanGeek: Play a game that requires a high APM. :D

12:13 AM
hm, prolly rdp or nx to a disposable account on a personal server, with everything already logged in
i mean, actual gibberish ;p
something like a teensy, set up to create large random sets of words...

Let Autohotkey type out all the question titles. :D

he's running a mac ;p
but yeah, same idea.
hmm

@CharlesSprayberry Hmm, I could let it run on Stack Overflow for only a few minutes so that I just get a big enough amount of the latest activity...

turns out the newer X220s may have a fan issue. i apparently got an early model, but the ones made around july apparently have very loud fans and 'pulsing'

sure, that might be interesting enough. getting all 2mill so questions might be a bit overkill :P

so much for me recommending them. they are really nice systems, and the problem seems isolated to a few people, but least one person i know may be getting a mac cause of that

@JourneymanGeek Those X220's are REALLY nice. My cousin has one, they seem to be VERY powerful

Because waiting 3249.2 seconds is painful. :P
Appears to be 54 minutes, not 40.

@SimonSheehan: they're lovely. the only 'issue' is i can't game on a 13 inch screen. Its quite almost perfect

@JourneymanGeek What are the specs on yours?

12:19 AM
@CharlesSprayberry: Actually, you can't even download Stack Overflow on a single day. Given that the limit is 10000 requests a day. :P

that's funny

You would need to download the actual data dump and extract the titles from there...
But I want recent data (for in the long run)

@SimonSheehan: i'm not sitting at it right now, but core i5, 4 gigs of ram. its a paired down version with no bluetooth or camera tho
250 gb hard drive, usb 2.0 only
but whoa, she's a quick little beastie

@JourneymanGeek I've never used either of those things on my laptop :P We are looking at the T-Series Lenovo's right now, they seem priced well, and as usual with lenovo, very tough.

eheh. the T series and X series still have the old IBM dna

12:22 AM
Oh? Neat. I loved the old ones

looool

Had the old T60 for ages, but my dad had to return it to work when his position changed

thats an r61

Haha.

/me owns one

12:23 AM
but still, their still built like it!

yeah
and the sandy bridge platform means even the models without fancyass graphics can handle games

Hmm, interesting laptops.

@JourneymanGeek I can't believe they pack an i7 into those x220's though.

i got an x series cause i wanted something really light, and apparently .. it just so happened i got a good price on em
lol, they do, but even the i5 is as powerful as a previous generation i7
also, it takes quite a bit to actually push one hard.

Indeed. Looking at the Mac Mini's with the i5's

12:25 AM
hm

@JourneymanGeek Love the advertising on the site. "Epic battery life"

fixed use?

@JourneymanGeek what do you mean by that?

@SimonSheehan: 7 hours promised, least 4 with everything on, and semi intensive use. 24 hours with the slice
@SimonSheehan: its going to sit somewhere quietly ;p

Neat, thats cool

12:26 AM
i tend to favour atoms for that tho

@JourneymanGeek Somewhat. If my family is going to buy a desktop, a Mac Mini seems like a good deal. If we want another laptop, it'll be a Lenovo T520 or 420 likely

until recently i had a atom 230 as my main server. lovely little thing, dirt cheap

Time to see if 3D Rendering is fixed on virtualbox for gnome-shell

Woops, didn't pay notice, now I have enough, I think...
Downloading page 2570 of 19496. Time remaining: 2821.0 seconds.
That's three times Super User, the latest 15% of Stack Overflow activity.
Top word is android, interesting.
@CharlesSprayberry:

12:46 AM
No gnome-shell support immediately, looks like I have to mod it a bit to get it working

thanks @TomWijsman that's very interesting
@TomWijsman I'm assuming it is ok to save my own copy of above image?

@CharlesSprayberry Sure.
It's Full HD width so can easily be used as a wallpaper.
Gonna do another last one for today.
Should be done in a minute.
You must guess what community it is from... :)
@CharlesSprayberry:

So awesome. :D
Oh, forgot to put it to 200...

meta of course

12:59 AM
Yeah :D

that's really interesting

Ok superuser gurus ... I have a Win7Ult64 laptop and a WinXP32 that I want to network together. What do I need to do? They don't seem to see each other over the wireless.

what do you want to accomplish when sharing?

4:22 AM
to copy files from XP to Win7
(sorry, updating crap)

4:39 AM
make sure you have a share thats accessible
I actually find dropbox more convenient for moving files between computers

I went on the XP box and did right-clik -> sharing and security -> named share -> permissions "all read" and went to the Win7 and did \\ip.add.re.ss and it doesn't even see the box

turn the firewall off
windows firewall that is

I don't know that I can for sure, I may have a corporate firewall group policy
I figured I'm gonna do the workaround method and just use an external hard drive

can you install software?

Yep

4:44 AM
dropbox is great then
dropbox.com

So is a physical hard drive connected over USB :p

true
windows firewall... actually any software firewall... is garbage. i always disable them

I find windows firewall to be good.

I find it nags me if I don't turn it on

Its never asked me anything :S
Except the occasional unblock
Anyone remember ZoneAlarm? :p

4:56 AM
you can disable the "nagging" and yes, unfortunately I remember zonealarm

Don't remind us about zonealarm :p

Haha. I remember it constantly interrupting Halo.

halo... on a PC? blasphemy

I never had an XBox halo: combat evolved Is still kicking on the PC :)

Many computer manufacturers offer discounts to students. Sometimes this is through a specific agreement with your university, other times it just required a .edu email address. Try searching for your preferred computer manufacturer and “academic discounts”, or follow the links below:

@jcolebrand - working now?

Good morning!

i have no idea. I'm rather hoping my new school has office so i don't need to buy it ;p

9:06 AM
oo, there's a new "Archaeologist" badge for editing old posts, no bonus points for guess who already has it on SU :)
(and a lesser "Excavator" version for a single edit on an old post)

Haha nice, my editing last night got me the lesser one

right, meeting time, be back later...

i apparently got excavator ;p

lol
@JourneymanGeek, must have beat you by only a few seconds lol.

@JourneymanGeek Oh yeah
@JourneymanGeek What is "Intel Unified AMT Driver"?
Does it have something to do with Turbo Boost?

lol. i was wondering the same thing actually
is googleing it up now
Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) is hardware-based technology for remotely managing and securing PCs out-of-band. Currently, Intel AMT is available in desktop PCs with Intel Core 2 processor with Intel vPro technology and available in laptop PCs with Centrino or Centrino 2 platform with vPro technology. Overview of Intel AMT Intel AMT is hardware and firmware technology that builds certain functionality into business PCs in order to make the PCs easier and less expensive for businesses to monitor, maintain, update, upgrade, and repair. curious, since i thought my laptop didn't have vpro

@JourneymanGeek Not sure about Turbo Boost...

well, this quite certainly has nothing to do with turbo boost
google indicates there's a seperate driver for turbo boost

@JourneymanGeek Can you look at these and tell me if something has connection to Turbo Boost?

Greetings

mmm, there's nothing quite like a nice meeting with HR to discuss impending redundancies to put you in a good mood for the afternoon

@DMA57361 Who is HR?

@Boris_yo HR = Human Resources

10:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you know what file is driver for Turbo Boost?
@DMA57361 Oh you are a head of HR, right?

O_o erm... no. I said I had a meeting with them... not individually, but my team

hello guys need help with ubuntu .. askubuntu.com/questions/57164/…

@DMA57361: its HR's job to ensure their job security at your expense ;p
@Borisyo: see above for my best guess. its probably chipset
@Borisyo: see above for my best guess. its probably chipset

@JourneymanGeek ha, something like that, but they're not really the source of the problems this time round

@JourneymanGeek Yes, but question is which file.

11:09 AM
@Borisyo: well poke around there. can't expect me to do all your homework for you ;)
@DMA57361: say it isn't so... (and as you can guess, my dad's an engineer, and i somewhat inherited his dislike of paperpushers ._.)

@JourneymanGeek meh, paper pushers have to push paper, someone's got to do it as these places really don't run without them when they're big

@DMA57361: well, what really annoys me is short sighted staff retention policies.
you train someone up, and drop em for short term numbers. then have to train someone up all over again.

yeah, that's always a bit daft
we're looking at our team being "restructured", and it's been quite a while since we lost anyone tbh - even to natural turnover

@DMA57361 Ouch... Good Luck :/

@WilliamHilsum workaround. Not worth continuing to fool with it, the source (with the data) has decided to start NMI bluescreening.

Huh, I was talking about the Windows networking :/ Sorry... long boring morning, easily confused!

@WilliamHilsum I was too.
It's just not worth pursuing at this point. It may be the firewall, and that one is joined to the domain, so it may be locked down to me. idk, and at this point, idc really ;) was worth the passing ask tho.

Ahh ok, sorry, just re-read it and I understand
If it is just a one off data transfer, may want to rip the hard drive out and do the more direct (And fastest) approach.

laptop, only the one port, no desktop at the house (I know the horrors!) and no 2.5-3.5 converter if I did.
and no 2.5 cradle for that matter either.
the old laptop is still IDE

2:58 PM
Any techie should have a dock! You can get them really cheap off of eBay... and if it is SATA, makes no difference... if IDE, adapters are cheap, but still a pain
ahh lol!
well, if you do want help transferring later, let me know... if it was me and in your situation, I would try safe mode with networking...

@TomWijsman what's prolific assistant?

meh, we're talking less than 20GB of data. USB will work ;)

@WilliamHilsum Thanks. I just like to moan about it in here every so often. :P We are now finally be approaching the stage where we find out who may go... so fun fun

@DMA57361 hehe, hard to know what to say, good luck... a couple of my friends have been given one-month notices, scary times
@TomWijsman that is so cool! :)

@WilliamHilsum: If you starred it, you can star the other message in the side bar so it isn't there twice. (the image link)
There's anther version without OSes also in the transcript.

@WilliamHilsum well I've a 6wk statutory min if they eject me, but (apparently) anyone who goes will get Dec 31st as a leave date

@TomWijsman I can say the same about the image, wordle, I assume?

3:08 PM
@Sathya: Yes, wordle. First tried to look for a Python implementation, but why reinvent the wheel...
A size modifier would be great though.
Fun thing is that if you randomize their locations, Windows often is placed apart rather than in the tag cloud.

@TomWijsman pretty sweet. If wordle had an API, you could've put it together and post on Stack Apps. Not that you still can't do it now.

Takes 2 minutes to download all Super User question information.
We only seem to be 5% of Stack Overflow so far. :(
In terms of amount of questions...

so just grab all question titles?

@TomWijsman Were actually only about 4.6% of SO.

@SimonSheehan: :D

3:12 PM
So as the 2nd largest site...were pretty small :P

@Sathya: Yes, it removes the limits of Data.SE, allowing me to apply statistical algorithms and similar...
@SimonSheehan: Yeah, I was thus wondering; if you compare the amount of programmers versus the amount of people that would need help with their computer questions I would think the latter would be bigger.

Would a question about SharePoint be on-topic for SU?

@Iszi there's a SharePoint

@Sathya This is more of an end-user question. Still throw it over there instead?

@Iszi yes
> This can include questions from a variety of different roles... developers, admins and end-users can all ask questions here! For example:

3:15 PM
@Sathya Thanks.

@Iszi cheers.
@TomWijsman are you using any SE libraries or just urllib2 doing the downloading?

@Sathya: Just urllib2, don't need more information than the questions for now so after I got all questions I'm done with talking to Stack Exchange.

@TomWijsman okay :)

This is similar to my RSS/Twitter application I want to write (do you remember me talking about that?) which is more complex.

@TomWijsman yeah, I do remember that :)

3:21 PM
So, kind of a refresh of what I already know and it's no lost work in any case.

Hey, it looks like there was already an answer to my question. It's kind of not worth it for the small-ish volume of files I'm normally checking in, in the deep folder structure we have, but it's cool to see there's an answer!
7
A: How do I check in a LOT of files all at once?

brian brinleyGo to site actions -> Manage content and structure. At the first page there is a list of the files with a "view" in the toolbar on the right section. Drop this down and choose "Checked out to me". This will list all the files, you can then check the checkbox to select all items and in the actio...

Yeah, I love that when programming. Google... Stack Overflow! Google... Stack Overflow!
I might as well skip the Google step. xD

Only problem I have with that answer is that the "Checked out to me" view doesn't actually show me the files checked out to me, for some reason. I have to actually navigate to the folder that contains those files.

3:46 PM
Time to fire up Windows Update...again

Good point.
New touchpad drivers and an error...

4:09 PM
@TomWijsman done
Nope... Can't undo the star :/ it says "It is too late to undo this operation"

1 hour later…
5:30 PM
any suggestions for a bandwidth monitor?

5:49 PM
@KronoS I remember one, it was nice... oh, found it: lifehacker.com/5115058/bitmeter-monitors-your-bandwidth - I used it several months back, was really nice, opens up in your web browser to display data, very nice UI

@studiohack does that monitor the entire network?

AFAIK, @KronoS, just your local PC. you would have to check it out, I'm not sure. try looking at BitMeter's webpage

I need something that scans the network

6:06 PM
sorry @KronoS :( Don't know of anything

7:02 PM
Hmm, odd. I have 80 edits, but no Strunk and White badge. Interesting.

you are talking about network bandwidth?

@slhck I see 2 different users

:P
they're already deleted @SimonSheehan

Ah, those moderators, fast :P

oh those were posted a couple of weeks ago
I remembered the product though

Ah.
CCleaner is very popular for windows
Although i find its less effective nowadays

8:21 PM
Haven't used such a cleaner, I prefer to just reinstall :P

@slhck I rarely re-install. Not very convenient on windows :)
"A great collective gasp issued from tuned-in Firefox fans when Mozilla announced that it was switching to a Chrome-like release schedule for its browser. Now Mozilla wants to take things one step further and remove Firefox version numbers entirely — from the user-facing parts of the browser, anyway."

@slhck yup. I also requested they add that website to the spam blacklist, so any post mentioning it won't go through

@nhinkle Ah, that's neat. Didn't know that was possible. Thanks!
@SimonSheehan Then again, that's true. I like to keep my systems minimal, so it's not such a big of a deal.

@slhck I do disable a lot of things. You make OS X sound so simple compared to this monster

I never reinstall Windows and my computer works fine :P

8:30 PM
@SimonSheehan Well, I just reset my girlfriend's macbook and the neat thing is that you can basically pull all apps and their preferences back to the machine
and it works
you can also just migrate the keychain file, which keeps all login information
so it's a lot faster than having to reinstall software on Windows

@slhck Damn that's easy :O
I'm with @nhinkle on that one. Didn't reinstall for 7 years :P

FWIW, you can also copy over windows user profiles and preserve most settings. It's not too difficult.

Actually never reinstalled, I just upgraded

Apps are trickier though. OS X handles those more gracefully

7 Years on XP, 3 months on Vista, then got 7 for free

8:32 PM
@SimonSheehan where'd you get it free?

@nhinkle When I got my Dell they offered to give it to me for free when it was released :D

I like to reinstall Windows every year, or at least every 2 years

oh, cool

Oh I used to have a really old Windows profile and it worked fine over all those years

well i've only had this computer for a year, but no intent of reinstalling anytime soon

8:33 PM
had Windows XP for 6 years, then Vista for 1 year, then 7

It's a matter of personal preference I guess :P

our home computer i upgraded to 7 about a year ago too

@slhck are you a mac or pc? (I suppose I could check your tags, but am too lazy :P)

I got W7 on the laptop preloaded, so it hasn't changed. Still moving fast. I have no regrets buying from Dell

@SimonSheehan what laptop do you have?

8:35 PM
@nhinkle Inspiron 15R
Upgraded to Radeon Mobility HD 5400 series

sounds pretty nice
mine's an HP. i like it so far :)

@studiohack Heh, 95% Mac, 5% Linux, I really don't know much about Windows

@nhinkle What are the specs on yours?

if i were buying a laptop today i'd probably get the ASUS U36JC-A1

@nhinkle Very similar to mine, same GPU :) you just got the faster CPU

8:37 PM
upgraded to have an SSD, thanks to the blog :D

Oo nice.

I have a Dell Studio 1735,it s a mid grade laptop, between the XPS and the Inspirons, pretty good - came with Vista, upgraded to 7, about to reinstall to take advantadge of 64bit

those studio 17's are huge
a friend of mine has one. it's enormous
nice 1900x1200 display though

@nhinkle My family is currently considering a 3rd computer, since we have 4 people all using 2. Currently for laptops it'd be a Lenovo t-series, or a Mac Mini for a desktop

Lenovos are nice

8:38 PM
@nhinkle yes, they are large. in retrospect, I would go with a smaller laptop, about a 15", don't need the numpad - 1400 x 900 is the resolution

you know, you could've had a desktop easily if you'd gone for Jeff's offer :P
I think 13-14" is the sweet spot, personally

I remember the old iBook 13". Was such a lovely machine

also a vaio z or even a vaio s would be nice. pricey though

@studiohack Thanks for revoking the vote on the Gmail/Chrome question

@nhinkle I got to try the X220. shop.lenovo.com/us/products/Laptops/ThinkPad/x-series/x220/… Its a MONSTER for a 12"
Add $190 to the base model and you get an i7

8:44 PM
I'm off again, see you around @SimonSheehan @nhinkle @studiohack!

@slhck cya later!
Now to get Gnome 3 going on Virtualbox..

back to work for me too
toodles folks

have fun @nhinkle

hi, can someone help me with my problem:

Q: All Drivers Gone from Computer(No USB or Wireless Driver) Windows 7

KgroverLast night, I was trying to restore my iPhone, got it stuck in recovery mode, and in the process had to install known software(iReb, iRecovery, etc). 9:29 PM
just earned the Deputy badge. how ironic.

@studiohack Very ironic. I think somethings up with the badges, there's 2 i think im supposed to have but aren't there

yeah, I just now hit 500 flag weight, since instead of flagging, I deal with it directly, since I am a mod @SimonSheehan :P

@studiohack Indeed, still quite ironic :P Why do you still flag though?

sometimes mods leave each other notes by flagging a question...so if a user flags a question, asking why Mod ABC closed it, I might flag it and say @ModABC, would you take a look at this, etc.

To get the badge :P

9:34 PM
Ah okay, neat.

9:44 PM
Oh woot, finally broke 2k this morning (it just clicked lol)
