... Im the last person who should comment on others....

Wil
oh, come on!....
lol

@Troggy, get me a coffee while your at it

Wil
he isn't that bad, but personally, if I was going to be presenting, I would dress up, or do something!...

dude stop swinging with your arms!
I'm turning him off
back to work

Wil
7:02 PM
good luck!
Im so out of the loop, had no idea about this event, but it seems cool...
I need to start reading slashdot/engadget again... just not enough hours in the day :(

no don't just watch twitter ;P

Q: How do I see/change the Interrupt Request Level (IRQL) of my device?

TomWijHow can I see/change the Interrupt Request Level (IRQL) of my device?

@IvoFlipse If they are they are your problem
BTW: Got my iPad today

gratz
install weRule and Restaurant, so we can all play together ;P

:P I use it for video streaming thank you very much

7:16 PM
@Feeds @TomWij I'm not sure if that's something that will get asked enough to warrant being community-faq. It looks useful and you wrote a good post, but how many people are ever going to ask that? CFAQ are supposed to be things that get asked frequently or apply to a wide array of things. thoughts, other folks?

streaming? you mean you didn't get the 64 Gb one?

@IvoFlipse I did. But why not use a perfectly good streaming server?

I agree with @nhinkle, though I don't mind if it would be abused to collectively edit a question into something better. Like a call to arms so to say

@nhinkle: Ah, okay... Thanks for explaining. Perhaps I should create a more generic CFAQ about devices later that links to various sub-questions...

I know you're right @Diago, I don't have a credit card, so couldn't get AirPlay

7:18 PM
btw, there were some rumors some time ago that chrome can be tuned to use user-defined dns-servers... anyone knowing details?

@IvoFlipse for that sort of thing we can also post in chat and say "hey, give me a hand!!!". but yes, I suppose that would be an ok use of the -proposed tag, I just don't know that those types should be graduated to community-faq (non-proposed
2

@IvoFlipse Who needs airplay. TVersity, Safari is all you need. AirPLay doesn't play transcoded streams anyway.

good point @nhinkle

Actually haven't found a single decent streaming app for the iPad

Tversity? hopefully not Mac only?

7:19 PM
And I have bought them all :(
Nope. It's Windows actually

regarding streaming media @Diago and @IvoFlipse: saw this on engadget, and am excited as university students can get prime for free

@nhinkle I can only dream of Netflix

@Diago why's that? price or regional restrictions?

regional restriction @nhinkle, we're all locked out

@nhinkle How about not even in the country :P

7:21 PM
unless you're going to host a proxy for us all

I somehow don't think that would go over so well with the network admins here :P
Sorry

Forgive the Americans. They forget there are other countries :P

perhaps a nice idea @Diago ;) we all pay for one proxy to the US, hosted by @nhinkle

It is unfortunate that so many streaming media services are US-only

oh not to your own network @nhinkle

7:22 PM
@IvoFlipse where else would I host it though?

I love our puppy, but when he starts barking at everyone to play with him, I wanna strangle him

no idea, I'm sure there are services that only require you to be American to sign up or at least pay from the US

Interesting
Anyhow, if you're going to go with dubiously legal measures, methinks there are more efficient methods than subscribing to netflix through a proxy. Not that I would recommend any of that

I need another Airport Express. My WIFI doesn't reach completely to the other side of the main bedroom. Time to convince the wife that we need one....
My current network state:

brb... gotta go swap the laundry

7:32 PM
@Diago it works, but I need to get the pro version to actually stream something :\

To transcode.
It will stream to the iPad as long as it is in the right format. I have the Pro version, worth every cent.
I initially got it for the XBox and then it happened to work for the iPhone/iPad
Watching Star Trek in HD through it right now. On the iPad

the household one, does that cover streaming to any pc or something?
well doesn't Windows already share everything? I would just need something that plays the content

Yes it does. I stream to the X-Box / 2 x iPad's / 2 x iPhones / 2 x MacBook's and 1 x Windows Machine
The transcoding helps to lesson the load on wireless for HD stuff
And again, I tried every possible server out there. Remember, there is a difference between live transcoding and streaming.

well 70$ is a bit steep for me at the moment :\

70?

7:36 PM
for the multipc pack
or would I just need it on one pc to stream it to the rest, guess so yeah

You just install it on one server machine
It's a uPNP server. So I have it on a Windows 2008 box which stores all the movies. All the devices connect to it.
You don't need more then that for home.

hey guys how's it goin?

@Diago: does tversity having fun with a ps3 (as client) as well?

@akira It works great with it from what I recall. It is the only one that works with the X-Box properly, and the X-Box is the most difficult of the lot to stream too. It does however have a PS3 transcoding profile

/me puts that on his checkout-list

7:41 PM
hi @KronoS, I got things working again... pfff

@Diago: do you know something equally well performing media-server for *bsd/linux?

I even hacked it to transcode to XBMC.
@akira There isn't one. Again I have tried them all. Twonky comes close but falls over on transcoding.

there are areas that really suck big time @nix

The only one's I haven't tried are Mac one's, but I will once I get my Mac Mini server

@IvoFlipse good what was the prob... or have you still not really figured it out?

7:43 PM
@akira I know. I ran a linux server for a while, and that was my biggest pain.

getting a decent, non-technical-user-with-low-end-hw-ready media player for *nix is just impossible.

no idea @KronoS :(

also... what's the deal with the sendGenie? Is it spam or just coincidence?

songbird: dead
(and not for low-end-hw)

@IvoFlipse did you try a dif PSU?

7:44 PM
amarok: kde-with-tons-of-deps

I don't have a larger one

banshee: crashes and chokes

and what a pain it would be to remove it again sigh

rhythmbox: dont make me laugh
its all ugly. i ve now deployed xbmc as the media player, lets see how that turns out.
@Diago: i ve tried mediathomb and another one i forgot.

@akira I used mediatomb for a while, but it fails on mkv's
XBMC is my preferred client, and BTW, it's also a server
I haven't used it for that purpose because I need a Windows Server on a headless box, but it can server and transcode video quite well.

7:48 PM
@Diago: mediathomb worked for mkv afair, but .. well .. its all .suxky )
/me puts xbmc-on-fbsd on his todo-list as well

I am over it actually. I spend all my time trying free solutions over Christmas and eventually caved and bought TVersity

well I will consider it @Diago, though currently I watch most behind the computer and just stream to the Xbox/PS3 if I can
or burn it if need be

@IvoFlipse Nothing wrong with that. I had a bigger need since the wife also watches, and we switch between devices all the time
I must say the iPad is impressive for watching and playing

@Diago: how much is the pro?

oh my GF just watches replays from the internet, which helps me a ton
40$ @akira

7:52 PM
ij
ok

if it just works, it's probably worth it, because time == money

@IvoFlipse Now you know why I love my Apple stuff :)

@IvoFlipse: was just a typo .. or .. off-by-one :) the price is ok for me
@Diago: btw, can tversity stream to appletv? :)

@akira I am not sure. From what I know the AppleTV is a uPNP client. I am getting one at the end of the year, but won't know before then. I have had conflicting reports

at the end of the year? you mean ... 99$ bucks and then .. 2011-12?

A: Backup IMAP mail, then access via IMAP again

Dushyant Kumar MastaI am a developer team member of a software that I would like suggest to you a simple tool for IMAP backup called: Beyond Inbox. There are five basic functions that we all need to perform in order to manage and safeguard our email- backup, restore, archive, transfer email to another IMAP account...

@akira When it's actually available here yes.

umm.... solicitation? I know that it's allowed... but still?

lol I tried to get my dad a simple Android phone, because he doesn't call much anyway and would just use it for internet and navigation
now he asks me what I think of the iphone 4.. sigh

@KronoS He's been deposited :P
@IvoFlipse Send it my way. Actually it's the ideal phone for a non geek.

@Diago thanks :)

8:03 PM
no, the data plan is more expensive and you're stuck for 2 years (at a higher rate), so I'd make him buy something like a Wildfire and just throw it away at the end of the year

@Diago: where is "here"?

@akira South Africa
We only got the iPad last week.

is apple not shipping overseas as well?

No, not at all

ivo could use the laser he has parked in the back of his house, dig through the earth and drop the atv you paid before :)

8:09 PM
If a product has not been released in your country, it is considered a gray import if you buy it in the states and bring it in.

he then tell you here that he has thrown the atv into the hole and then you have to run to your side of the hole to catch it.

lolz
@akira Ok, confirmed, the Apple TV does not do uPNP. Only iTunes sharing. You can however Jailbreak it and load XBMC or Plex on it directly

yep. dont know if i want to jailbreak mine. it looks so debianish after jailbreaking it (apt-get install xbmc) .. strange hack
o7

8:27 PM
surely I should be able to make something as ugly as this in Python right?

Yay, 209 reputation today, was a long time ago...
@IvoFlipse: Yeah, sure.

well then... 1 day left 'til the election is over
does anybody know how long they usually take to count up the votes and tell us the results?

hmmm good question @nhinkle - maybe we should watch the election at server fault?

@studiohack i just looked over there and it appears theirs ends tomorrow too. I guess they had a doubly-long election period without the primary

8:42 PM
ah, never mind @nhinkle. the SF elections close tomorrow also, so it looks like their election started later than ours?

lol someone I suspended apologized and asked for a second chance :)
I'm far too lenient

@nhinkle I'm assuming the calculation will be pretty quick with at least SU and SF... but SO... that might be a while

that;s a good thing haha @IvoFlipse

@IvoFlipse oh you're so nice

@KronoS: @IvoFlipse's fishing for compliments ;P

8:43 PM
well he did understand that I suspended him and what it was for
no, I'm waiting for Diago to burn him in furious anger

@studiohack it's because he's been dealing with his crappy PC all day... he needs a pick me up

good thing I didn't merge him with Deposit yet

@IvoFlipse the fact that he apologized is good. if he's asking for a second chance, maybe he'll turn out to be a good user
but if he does something bad again... i imagine you won't be so nice the 2nd time around

well not all his posts were spam and he was a member for over a year

good excuse @KronoS.

8:45 PM
then his post get's insta-merged with a load of crap :P

@IvoFlipse what did he do to warrant the suspension?

awww @IvoFlipse is so nice... :P that help?

I wouldn't affiliate with IgoUSB or SendGenie

why SendGenie? @IvoFlipse

@KronoS SO shouldn't take much longer. the software they're using is used by governments for massive political elections that probably have more voters than SO does
and even with 30 candidates instead of 7 and 10, that's not all that terribly much

8:46 PM
@studiohack it seems like it's spam... just really fishy answers/questions going on there...

ask @sathya @studiohack

meaning that SendGenie is not a good program?

@nhinkle I though only 10 went to final round

meaning you shouldn't spam it in every post

okay

8:48 PM
@KronoS that's what i thought too. it says "30/56 candidates" on the SO election page, but i only see 10 listed, so idk
i think it's that the top 30 by rep go into the primaries, and then the top 10 from the primaries go into the elections

@nhinkle I think that only 10 are there...

you know what's going to suck about living off-campus next year?
i won't get this:

I'm getting that at home :-P
More or less.

@oKtosiTe, lucky :P

I don't even get that much

8:50 PM
I don't think they offer speeds that high to residential customers around here

I get a tenth of that... on a really really good day
:(
even though I'm supposed to be getting 20Mb/s

@nhinkle One of the few things that made moving to Sweden bearable. :-)

testing mine :P

@KronoS, this is what I get at work on a good day, where we have Gig ethernet

whoa!!!

8:52 PM
What? I bow before your linkup.

just fell over

So it's been you, slowing the net to a grind. :-)

Why the heck is a 304Mb/s connection only a 3.6/5 rating?!

there @KronoS, that make you feel more fortunate?

8:53 PM
(the ISP which hosts the closest speedtest.net server is PEAK, which serves stack overflow's oregon servers)
@KronoS, no idea. i always give it 5 stars. it's not that fast everywhere on campus though

notices that @studiohack doesn't share where he's from ;)
@studiohack just a little :P

my closest server was 150 miles away lol

wifi i usually get 6-10 Mbps, wired i usually get at least 20, often more. who knows why people would vote that less than awesome

I'm amazed I even get videos to stream :P

It's probably all the frat boys not getting their porn fast enough...
@studiohack I'm amazing you can even chat! ;P

8:55 PM
@KronoS the frat houses are off-campus and have to buy their own internet from a regular ISP :P
@studiohack my home internet is hardly any better than that. we get 1.5 Mbps down on a good way

blarg. testing again about 50 miles away

ok i'm going to get lunch
see ya guys later

Meh.

@oKtosiTe that's pretty good for home internet

this one is 100 miles closer -

8:57 PM
Too many connections open. Should top out at 35/35.

see ya @nhinkle
even slower?!!

@nhinkle later

A: Visual Studio hangs Windows

Dave MortonI have exactly the same problem, with a nearly identical computer/configuration (see Below). Disabling the ATI Hotkey Poller didn't work for me, unfortunately, and after some investigation, I've determined that it's not an overheating issue with my video card (it never gets over 100°F). The locku...

so what do we do in a case like this?
@IvoFlipse @studiohack @nhinkle
where the user has a prob... it's a dupe prob, but hasn't been solved... and all he can do is answer....

flag for moderator not an answer

ya but then it gets deleted... and whoosh he still isn't anywhere closer to what he needs...

9:05 PM
I could add his info to the OP

That what I was thinking... and I was also thinking that maybe we can suggest/push for newer users to add such material to OP and then we can approve the edit... if it's worthwhile

good idea...

Actually... The details you really need there are a stack trace of the hang, it would directly show you the issue and then there's no need to try about every other option.
Bummer @ Technet: The specified CGI application encountered an error and the server terminated the process. >_<

@KronoS I would advocate for commenting and suggesting they propose an edit to the original question

procdump -h processname.exe processname.dmp
Then, throw that dump into an online analyzer or WinDBG (with symbols set right. And then you can see the cause in the stack trace !analyze -v performs...
Oh, I forgot to link ProcDump.

9:17 PM
@nhinkle done...

o_O
i just heard the notification noise, but nobody said anything...
well, not since @KronoS which was a while ago

@nhinkle VTC

weird. i don't have that room open, but evidently it made the sound over here...

goofygrin.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/… "StackExchange/StackOverflow is broke. Real broke." Discuss!

like I said before... I just amazes me how butt hurt people can get over "digital" stuff...
and SO isn't really the best place to start...
Holy crap! Where's half the U.S.?

9:36 PM
@Linker3000: I stopped after the first few words...
A new user is more likely to pose a question than to go and improve an answer.

@TomWij You can't please everyone.

Those that solely Google the question will probably not have the urge to respond or improve the answer, thus there in no need to allow them to comment. Else every good answer would have a bunch of "thank you" comments.

@TomWij True - maybe they're miffed that they weren't given mod status after their first visit.

For that reason, asking/answering a small amount is enough to show you want to participate and not just thank.

@KronoS, it's snowing on half the US! Although it's beautiful and sunny here

9:39 PM
There are the proposed edits now, so... Really, I don't care about the rest of his post. :D

ironic, really... everyone thinks it's rainy in oregon, but we've got beautiful clear skies here at the beginning of february and it's dumping snow everywhere else
gah... finally explained this thing. i don't know where all these weird other answers came from

A: How do I remove Folder Ownerships? (Windows 7 & Windows XP)

nhinkleFirst of all, it is important to understand the distinction between sharing and file permissions. In Windows, you set up sharing to create a network share. When you add users to the sharing permissions, you are giving those users the ability to access that share remotely from another computer. Fr...

Lol... it's cold here... well cold for AZ lol

@KronoS I went to a business meeting in Phoenix once (from the UK) - sad to say it was mostly work-work-work so didn't see much!

@Linker3000 eh there's really not that much to see... just desert and more desert

@nhinkle: Question is kinda weird too, seen that somewhere else today too.
Giving too much value to something they think that just doesn't matter.

9:42 PM
i have to go

Why do I need to give "Everyone" access, I want to remove the "Access Control List" instead. ^^

got chem lab in 20 minutes
heh. yeah... that was a bit odd. i tried to explain that in the answer

- 30 F this morning

@studiohack wow that's cold
anyhow, see you guys later

@studiohack holy Crap! I would die there
later @nhinkle

9:43 PM
see ya @nhinkle
@KronoS - it's kinda nice... :P

kinda nice? o_0 were you born in a freezer? @studiohack

@studiohack As in -34C ??

-30 F
I guess I was @KronoS - looking for the photo of my polar bear.

@studiohack Ouch -30F = -34C = a tad cool

it is a little balmy though
;P
haha

9:46 PM
@studiohack Working at the poolside today then?

never have done that job... @Linker3000

what comment?

I don't know... ^^

user image

this is my personal polar bear...loading..........................
@KronoS: this polar bear is so tough, it slept outside in this -30F temps...

inserts random video and goes to study...

9:48 PM
That's crazy....

@studiohack whoa

man, that guy who wrote the post ranting about SE above is kinda crazy...he also has a point
yeah, so those of you who live in warmer temps - be thankful ;-)

that must be the reason he quit :P

does anyone know why he left, @IvoFlipse?

9:56 PM
nope and he's sorely missed :(

I agree.

@Ivo: how old is the data that's queried over at data.stackexchange.com?

since the last data dump AFAIK

@IvoFlipse Any idea (roughly) how often they are done?

once a month @Linker3000
last one was around Jan 8th or 11th, I can't remember which

10:00 PM
it used to be monthly, but not it's bimonthly which I suspect is to handicap the spammers

Thanks

what happens when you clear the RAID configuration on a hdd?

@TomWij i just have to ask... why 10 accounts?

Dunno, I didn't write it.

10:04 PM
@IvoFlipse i didn't know that Quack Quixote left...

go to his page @KronoS and see the last login
If I clear a RAID configuration, do I lose the data on the drive?

might depend on the configuration
if it's striped, you're F-ed I assume

Not sure about that @IvoFlipse, but it is a RAID 0
I have three drives, and 2 are visible in the OS, but the 3rd is not...so I want to create either a different RAID config or have no RAID at all for a while...

I shied away from trying to set up such things and I lacked homogeneous HDDs too...

I think I have found our next corporate router! newit.co.uk/shop/proddetail.php?prod=DreamPlug

10:16 PM
Marvell Sheeva core 1.2GHz speed
Linux 2.6.3x Kernel
512MB 16bit DDR2-800 MHz
1 GB on board micros-SD for kernel and root file system
holy crap what a specs for a plug!
I was about to say: are you sure, using a plug as your router? aren't those cheap ass versions of real routers
but this... isn't cheap at all :)

Wil
@studiohack Is that your dog?

@Wil: yes

Wil
Starred! (love dogs!)
fyi, re: your bear....
... this is quite long, but I guarantee the most fun you will read for ages...

http://www.27bslash6.com/trash.html

@IvoFlipse We run a few monitoring apps on our routers - but having said that, a router running DD-Wrt etc. would probably do

there goes the rest of my evening
> Due to the abundant supply of cats in the area, I'm surprised bears bother with the trash at all. As I have run over at least four cats this week and one of those did not put up much of a chase, it may be suggested that elderly residents and their cats pose more of an attraction for bears than unsecured trash

Wil
10:23 PM
@IvoFlipse lol, thought you meant about the video about the foot thing / router... lol, I try to catch up and read this in a weird order! hope you like that link!

> I own a gun but am unsure if a bear, shot with a Daisy .177 calibre BB air rifle purchased from Wal-Mart for $39.75, would be wounded or just pissed off. While testing the rifle last week, my offspring was definitely the latter
> Thak you Ivo,

I really have no intention to spam.

Notitze

Wil
@IvoFlipse ?

that's one of the spammers

Wil
ahh, I need to read up, missed about the spammers :S

> To this day, when anyone asks about the scars, I simply state "It involved a camping trip and a bear, I don't like to talk about it" which is true because I don't. While I was in the hospital, my mother went to my apartment to get some clothes for me and found my porn collection so it is a touchy subject.

10:29 PM
@studiohack: That looks awesome! I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks! ^^

welcome @MarkSzymanski
is learning with RAID
@IvoFlipse: is RAID 0 or RAID 5 better?
I've looked around but I'm curious about what you/other users think?
@KronoS, @nhinkle @Linker3000 if you guys know/have any experience

Whoo! Just 100 more rep ^^

10:46 PM
@studiohack what are you looking for?

dont we have a question about that @studiohack>?

oh, didn't think to look facepalm @IvoFlipse
@KronoS: nothing in particular, except just central storage for a home residence. But Wikipedia says that RAID 0 has a higher chance of drive failure, and I don't want that

in return for superb performance I reckon
I've never used RAID so no experience here

@studiohack there's no redundancy with a RAID0... which means that if a drive fails... it all goes...

yeah, because all three drives go...
or at least all the data @KronoS
there is much better performance with RAID 0 @IvoFlipse

10:50 PM
@studiohack yes... a RAID 5 is more reliable and faster...
but you need at least 3 drives

you can keep backups on another hard drive (you shouldn't mirror an entire drive anyway) and use Raid0 for performance

has no idea why he just refreshed the chat window... :P

you know what's better than two drives in Raid 0?
having 24 SSDs in raid 0 off course!

I do have three drives @KronoS , all totalling to 100 GB, and under RAID0, i can use all of it, but under RAID5, I can only use 2/3s of it

right... that's really where you lose....

10:53 PM
but from the way things look, @KronoS, I can only have all three in RAID0 or 5, nothing in between
and since this will be the backup to my primary machines, I want it to be reliable, but 60GB is gonna fill fast as I already have that much stuff

if it has to be safe use the mirrored version

that looks like the road I'm going...may attached an external drive to my USB on the server. thanks @IvoFlipse, @KronoS

@IvoFlipse I feel so inadequate with getting potentially 3 drives now :(

seriously 3 * 100 Gb = nothing
they cost the same amount of watts to spin, take up the same amount of physical space and they're probably old, which doesn't speak in their reliabilities favor...

the server is so old, it only has 100 GB total
