on to 10k @TomWij!

My avatar is all over the unanswered list, I'm on my way... ^^

Gnoupi
You scare me, @TomWij

if you have any special requests with questions @TomWij you can always ask them here

I've flagged one or two so far... And there's still my meta question.

12:57 PM
I plugged your question in the mod room, but guess the time of day wasn't ideal
I fear that they aren't going to do anything about them
but I would love some tool that shows me questions that need an answer and that I'm likely to know the answer off

Gnoupi
@TomWij - questions about user interface design are not really a "user side" issue. I migrated the question you flagged on SO

perhaps a nice project for your Master thesis ;-)

Gnoupi
it will be a better fit for the user interface SE site, but it's currently in private beta.

here's another Deposit for you @Gnoupi: superuser.com/users/45984/acai-optimum

Gnoupi
yes, I was already wondering

Gnoupi
1:01 PM
done

@Gnoupi: I see... I thought he was wondering how "select all" in installers work.
@IvoFlipse: I'll just wait and see what the rest thinks of it...

you should know that my response is more aimed at what the team will decide rather than my person preference @TomWij
but it's no use to raise false hope

Is the [troubleshooting] tag considered a meta tag?
There are still 373 questions in there. (superuser.com/questions/tagged/troubleshooting)
I tagged a post as such but the user wonders if it is one, and I start to get unsure if people start to argue about such things. :-)

1:16 PM
we'll it often asks for steps how to trouble shoot something, so in that sense, it coves the load
you must be having vacation right now, don't you?

I thought so, it's like the tag [windows-7].
Yes
School starts again in late September.

hehe remember me to buy you a donkere Leffe next week then ;)

But I'll have exams before that.
Hehe, I didn't notice you live so close to me... :-)

well I no longer live in Geel, I quite my job and moved back to Holland, but I have to visit my job next week to sort some things
would only be a 30 min detour ;)

I don't even know if I like donkere Leffe, and I'm trying to stay away from alcohol as I need to study... My exams start 23 August.

1:22 PM
auch hehe
you never tried it?
oh dear, guess I'll wait till after you exams to introduce you to it then

xD
There are so much things to try... ^^

hehe, I'm not bringing along weed!

Uses the handy edit feature... I'm staying away from that too. :-)

I actually never that myself :P
btw was your user picture taking in that restaurant in Antwerp? the one with the downstairs part?

Nice try, but no.
It was in a upstairs in a café in Antwerp.

1:34 PM
hehe, they have great food there though :P especially drinking Kwak with Americans is fun
what year are you in now (at the uni)?

I managed to get myself a year extra, the year I'm about to start is the last year of my bachelor.
My mathematics aren't good and it caused me to take courses to the next year, causing troubles in the lesson schedule, etc...

what direction are you aiming for with computer science then?

Software Engineering
or in the worst case a Junior/Senior Developer

is math's that important in that direction?

It's important in the Bachelor years, it's less important in the Software Engineering Master.

1:45 PM
ah crap :(

I'm also aiming for the gaming industry or something else that interests me...

I was lucky that I first did a Bachelor's degree, pass all the maths part and then went to a university, where I didn't have to do the maths anymore

Discrete Algorithmic Mathematics, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Numeric Linear Algebra
Those are pure mathematic courses, but then you still have those courses where a lot of mathematics are involved...
Computer Networks for example, efficiency proofs are based on what you learn in Calculus...

yeah that's true, though it's often the way they teach it that makes it hard too
and they fail to explain where you could apply it
like signal processing, they start with all this boring theoretical crap, whilst they could have grabbed a wiimote and SHOW you what those things mean

That's one of the things I hate the most
They explain something and you absolutely have no clue what you could use it for, it would increase your interest in it a lot.

1:52 PM
I hated signal processing in college
but ended up working for a company that makes matrixes of pressure sensors. why? because if you walk over them you get loads of interesting information about human movement, that I do find interesting

Did you know you can use a WiiMote on your computer?

completely changes your perception of the topics at hand
If I tell you I have engadgets, gizmodo and slashgear in my Google Reader feeds, what do you think? ;)

:D

though I can't wait for Kinect and hack that

Gnoupi
i worked on a small project in my school years to have a wiimote to use for powerpoint presentations, as pointer and remote control

1:54 PM
I would pay 10k€ for Kinect with high def cams

I didn't know of SlashGear yet.

nice :D
hehe, we should add that to the SU blog question then

Yeah, Kinect really looks nice from what I've seen from it.

Gnoupi
I was in specialty for image treatment and computer vision for a while, so I basically have seen how kinect works with cheap webcams :p

Q: What are the must read blogs?

StephenWhich blogs do you constantly read and visit daily? Ones that you couldn't do without and have gotten a ton of useful information from. (this disqualifies digg =) )

Gnoupi
1:56 PM
don't remember algorithms and else, though

Gnoupi
though if interested, I recommend to check OpenCV

Gnoupi
@Ivo - if you poke this question i'll have to close it as off-topic

Gnoupi
sorry, already done

well I'm in a European project with my current/previous employer where we have to use 3d scanners and pressure measurements to manufacture insoles (for shoes) with 3d printers

1:57 PM
@IvoFlipse: That question looks nice.

so I'm planning on getting myself a 3d printer and have some fun with that

Yeah, that would be awesome.

thanks for that link @Gnoupi I'm actually interested in computer vision with Python
though I'm just starting with it
I need to learn Python to do some basic data analysis: recognizing dog paws walking over a pressure measuring plate/matrix

Q: Learning about Computer Vision

Ali KazmiI am really intrigued by the field of computer vision and the potential it has. Are there any examples (preferably implemented in .NET) which I can study along with a reference book?

Gnoupi
9
Q: Machine vision in Python

JcMacoI would like to perform a few basic machine vision tasks using Python and I'd like to know where I could find tutorials to help me get started. As far as I know, the only free library for Python that does machine vision is PyCV (which is a wrapper for OpenCV apparently), but I can't find any app...

Gnoupi
2:01 PM
I love these sites

C# wrapper and an O'Reilly book, nice.
Thanks for those links... :-)
I'm off to some Gaming, Studying and other things...
I became addicted to Super User and the Meta Chat yesterday. :-(
See you later... :-)

good luck on those ;)
so where do you work then @Gnoupi?

Gnoupi
shh, top secret

Morning/afternoon/evening

hi @Sathya

2:13 PM
HI @Ivo

have you tried out any other SE site?

Gaming, Meta, Web apps
and SO
all tiny contributions :p
SU's where I spend most of my time.. its more... me :)

I hope somebody makes a great stackapp to help me find SU questions I can actually answer
I know there's skeetstalker, but that's too much of a hazzle

why not stackguru ?

Gnoupi
@Ivo - the Feednotifier + tag feeds is not good for you?

2:18 PM
34
Q: StackGuru: a near realtime bot for all StackExchange sites

Shay ErlichmenUpdate: Now with wildcards StackGuru is a Jabber/XMPP bot which gives you a command line interface to Stackapps sites, including Stackoverflow, Serverfault and Superuser. The bot allows you to follow questions tags by giving you a notification each time a new question is ask on the followed ta...

naah and I don't have the Feednotifier installed on my home pc (going to do it now!)

Stackguru's pretty fine for me
what're you looking at in an spp ?
app*

I actually want something that looks at my votes, my questions and answers and from that creates suggestions for questions
and most likely ones that off course have no answer, as @TomWij nicely pointed out

ah, that's a neat idea

it got flamed on stackapps, which I can understand, it would open up our votes to others which is uhmmm unwanted
but that doesn't mean I don't want the team to work on it
they could ask it on SO, stats.SE and math.SE and see what they come up with
partially that's what Quora does and what the new SE startpage is trying to do
show us hot stuff from all topics
now they should take it one step further and personalize it

2:23 PM
put in a feature request at meta ?

I guess I could

it is a good idea

the stupid thing is: people will burn it down because THEY don't need it
but using tags on SU sucks
first off: users can't tag properly which makes the useful tags way too broad
and it's often a specific combination of things that makes it worthwhile

true that.

2:29 PM
if I understood it right, OP wants a place where (s)he can muck with SE code ?

well it was so he could try and come up with something to suggest questions

Hm

but perhaps the downvote was for the API (which didn't exist back then)

o_0 didn't realize when it was first posted

this is exactly what I'm asking for
I knew it was asked before

2:31 PM
yet to be implemented ? The tag & answer is contradictory

what was the tag again for making small text?

Gnoupi
sub?

thats the one

What did I miss?

/me bows

a lot!

O-0

nice you could make your way to chat ;)

You'd be surprised :P I've been around

2:35 PM
LTNS @Diago

Yeah. Been a while.

I know, you DM me on Twitter for the beta password ;)

Gnoupi
How was your vacation "away" from these sites?

Lolz

where's ~quack btw
haven't seen him since @gnoupi became a Mod

2:36 PM
@Gnoupi Been good

Gnoupi
:78658 I don't know, it's been a month, and I'm almost worried

He's probably on vacation

Gnoupi
for a month and without a word? possible, but a bit odd

Agreed
Has anyone asked Jeff to contact him?

Gnoupi
he has been in copy of all moderator mails for a month

2:38 PM
yup

Gnoupi
there is no other contact address

Lolz.
I wonder if I should ask Jeff.
To add me back to those emails

Gnoupi
so besides, the moderation went from you trying to keep up, alone, to a team of vicious moderators closing everything on sight

Gnoupi
well, mostly random

Gnoupi
we go after him and reopen, simply

2:41 PM

I saw. It looks good.

we have a new way to deal with spammers, it's fun

hijacked!
isn't it awesome to be a mod

Hate the idea
Going to downvote it right now
My first vote coming back

you want to be a mod again @Diago?

@Ivo That's up to Jeff and the team. Won't say no.

2:43 PM
I don't see how you can have too many mods
as long as they agree on how the site should be ran

True

and while Gnoupi disagree, I think diamond mods should be mods everywhere

I agree with Gnoupi

Gnoupi
I still disagree

Gnoupi
i dont know SF, i don't want to be able to mod them

2:43 PM
they should refrain from edit wars and closing sprees, but they should help out when it is necessary

Gnoupi
same for other sites

Gnoupi
if you need a cross-site mod action, you have the mod chat, now

During Beta the skills are usefull
But any other time it is a pian
pain*

If I can't judge if it's off-topic, I wouldn't use it
but I can delete spam anywhere
or edit posts to make them better
without having to get rep on 12 sites

Gnoupi
you can always flag

2:45 PM
@Ivo damn you. Now I am can't stop thinking about mailing Jeff and asking him.

Gnoupi
so how is the addiction going?

if you don't mail him, I'm asking it in the mod chat room :P
but the mod chat only works if the right mods are online

@Ivo So ask. Then it's not me asking :P
@Gnoupi Managable

and I don't need their consent to delete questions

Gnoupi
in a way, he is a former mod. He could be on the white list for the mod chat

2:46 PM
My reasons for leaving was personal btw
Well I can't see it in the list of rooms

I said: @JeffAtwood can Diago be reinstated as a mod? he's afraid to ask it himself
so when Jeff reads it, he'll let you know

@Ivo I am going to kill you.

you're welcome

Slowly and painfully. But Thanks!

I'll come your way so I can at least die in a nice country :P
though I should have come during the WC then I guess

2:50 PM
Be thankful you didn't
Biggest Waste of Time Ever

Gnoupi
well, at least there was the French team

@Gnoupi The durban stadium is 2Km's from my office
I had great fun every time there was a game
Getting to and from work

uhm we made it to the finals, think we got our money worth for that
the finals sucked, but who cares!

Hell, we didn't even make it to the second round
So you have a lot to be proud of

I presume there will be loads of new posts on Meta.SU cursing @Diago :p

2:57 PM
Doubt it
Nothing on Meta is even assigned to me at the moment

where's the SU feed button again?
or what's the feed

oh right, doh!

Is there any good questions worth answering?

hehe, you should have upvoted my meta question ;)

3:10 PM
Oh bleh
Walked into that one

or have a look at @TomWij's suggestion for unanswered questions:
6
Q: Unanswered questions that are answered without upvotes or accepted answers.

TomWijThe Unanswered tab at the top shows that there are more than 8,000 unanswered questions, it also seems to increase every day. I think it's a bad behavior that this keeps increasing... Don't understand me wrong, I'm not trying to nitpick but I'm trying to get questions answered... This tab is the...

Have now :P

very ;) and it's good to have you back

Thanks

especially if I have to actually start doing work in the near future

3:16 PM

I am on a permanent vacation thank you very much.

:O you quit your job then?

Lolz
Just taking things very easy

Gnoupi
3:35 PM
I like when sometimes there are really objectively off-topic questions like this one:

Q: Soundproofing wall

JaydenI'd like to sound proof my existing walls because of the train horn is quite loud. What will be the better solution for this problem.

Gnoupi
at least for this one, it's sure, nobody will argue that their iphone is a computer or that gmail is a program

hehe no but they will never come back and ask another question :P
check the comments @Diago

A: Suggest "Questions you may have an answer to"

DiagoAlthough I initially hated the idea, I just got caught on this same exact problem. I have been gone for a while, and now that I am back the list of questions to go through is well, long. It would be nice if there was a way the system could suggest questions I could potentially answer, without me ...

Gnoupi
mmyers is just a mod, why you are telling him to make diago a mod?

is he?
comment deleted :P

Gnoupi
3:40 PM
and also, with all due respect, while I have nothing against Diago coming back as mod, go easy with it

Gnoupi
asking jeff is far enough, and even maybe a bit fast, he just came back :p

ok, ok :$

Gnoupi
don't go shouting this everywhere yet ;)

funny btw how I'm not getting any rep for that question, while I did invest quite a bounty

4:02 PM
Does the new bounty system allow you to earn rep on questions you add a bounty too?

Nope

Gnoupi
no, it's only to get an answer, no other reward

@Ivo. There's your answer :P
Actually never mind
I seem to still be asleep

4:14 PM
How do you copy a question to chat?

just paste the link
in a separate sentence

Shouldn't that be a SF question?

I can transfer it for you

I know you can. Just wondering if it is.

interesting to see what happens to the bounty

4:17 PM
Needs to be.

it can't be migrated as long as it has a bounty

Remove the bounty then migrate
If you still can
It used to be a mod feature

it is, didn't know it was
nor if it was wanted :P

I use to play this game with people posting bounties
Because they use to do it to protect their questions from being closed
used*

hehe quite smart really

4:19 PM
So Jeff added the feature without telling anyone one day
Users are amazing creatures

Questions on Super User are expected to generally relate to computer software or computer hardware in some way, within the scope defined in the faq.
Nice
:P

yup

@Diago is coming back then?

Bored much?

me & my feednotifier are one nasty couple

@random I am sure I am right here :)
Only if you want me back @random

4:31 PM
Of course @Diago we'd love to see you back

Well apparently I have big footsteps to follow :)
@Ivo There is something really scary about that sentence :P

it's supposed to be, people who post crap should be afraid

:79295 Probably a different kind of afraid from the sentence context

@random - Yeah like the whole couple part :P

4:48 PM

lol

Lolz
It is even funnier to see posts I had closed in the past
1 Vote. No Mod.

That makes you the prototypical Super User

Yeah. I have magic powers
Direct access to the database
I don't read the questions on the site
I run SQL queries

:79354 So bad it needs four mods to close it

4:58 PM
It's an example from an old meta post you posted.

Really? Have lost track of all the posts posted

Cosizzle Possible Duplicate: Looking for a tool to manage all maintenance work on my PC So I guess these questions are a little basic for this form, so sorry to come across as a fool! A: Can't delete file named ЃϵϳЅЂϿϽϯІχϯπρЂϻϵЉЃϵϳЅ

sofaHad the same Problem Saw your thread and tried the it over DOS Commandlines I navigated to the folder and used: del \A:H \F * \A:H selects all hidden files \F ignores read only status it worked for me.

is this hurtful to type?
del \A:H \F * \A:H

5:32 PM
:79470 \a = attributes; \h = hidden files; \f = force delete read-only; *
But the slashes are the wrong way
Not sure about the second half of that \A:H though

I would be afraid he would delete his whole drive or something like that

* should only work to delete files in the current directory

However if I recall windows treats the * only for files without extensions
In Linux * is valid for any file.

Windows/DOS should also wipe any file at all if using *

Give me a sec
Interesting
I has changed
So ignore my comment

Meh... I only have 30 reputation today... :-(

no you didn't :P
here's the solution to your SU problem:

Q: Archive Questions

Lance RobertsHow about we create a new status, Archived. A moderator could Archive a question. This would allow rep from the question to still be counted, and a special search 'isarchived' could be used to find it, but it wouldn't come up in normal searches. This way old questions that aren't currently rel...

meh only 10 today for me

@IvoFlipse: Cheater... ^^
Yeah, that would be another solution...

but I simply wouldn't be worried about them, as long as we can find a way to find you new good questions

Rather than a moderator accepting a question he could archive the question and don't temper with the 'answered' state.

if we get that, you don't have to search using our current crappy interface

Yeah, I read through the transcript... :-)
But I wonder if it's a good behavior to forget about old unanswered questions.

some aren't worth answering
because they were asked crappily

Yeah, but people with a similar problem end up creating a new question which then would be a duplicate.
So that duplicate is closed, but they can't improve the old question...

and some prefer the no questions asked mentality

and then there's the ask and never return policy

7:32 PM
yup
im off for a bit, but if you have any questions, just spam them here

Yes, put other people return...

later @ivo

But well, I'll see what we end up with... I just mentioned it so it would be a benefit for everyone that likes to answer questions.
The alternative solution is indeed to write a tool ourself using the API.
I'm off for some time too...

7:56 PM
off to bed now, well I can always read the transcript tomorrow
