@TRiG I'm also curious. This has never occurred to me.
Hi, @JamesT. Where are you? What do you do?
01:22
this and that
been busy recently which is why I haven't been around much
I am currently living in the USA, east coast
02:19
@JamesT So, you are not British.

@Anonymous I actually am. in general people carry their nationality with them, wherever they go, and it is hard to change!

@JamesT One time, I retorted to a comment by a friend with "You're not British!" He, in fact, was, and had immigrated some 20-30 years ago if I recall correctly. Of all people to say that to, I picked one who WAS British... -_-

@El'endiaStarman Your just rebuke for holding a discussion in comments is noted and received! I have a question about this however: given the permanent nature of the answer postings and the ephemeral nature of chat, if the discussion is entirely on topic, isn't legitimate to leave the comments that aren't noise in place?
@El'endiaStarman thank you for your clarification in the Meta question as well
@bruisedreed First off, thank you for actually coming to chat. Most people don't. That said, it's actually comments that are ephemeral (or rather, disposable) whereas chat messages are recorded permanently in the transcript (unless they're deleted).
THAT said, if comments are constructive, they will usually be left in place. If the answer/question is edited as a result, they may become obsolete and thus eligible for deletion. Most of the time though, a discussion like that is not really constructive.
@El'endiaStarman Can a group of chat messages be easily linked to from a question or answer?
@bruisedreed Not a group of chat messages, no, but a single message's link can be accessed by clicking on the arrow that appears at the left side when you mouse over a message, then clicking on "permalink". Well, you might be able to link a group if you make a bookmark, but that's something only mods and room owners can do, I believe.

@El'endiaStarman Ok, thanks for the useful info
@bruisedreed You're welcome. :)
@bruisedreed Another thing you can do with the permalink is that you can post it in the chat by itself and it will automatically quote it. An example is below. Also, another option that's available in the same dropdown is "reply to this message", which is very useful for making it clear which message you're replying to.

Hmmm...I wonder what happens if you replace a message's content with its own permalink...

@El'endiaStarman @El'endiaStarman Yes this looks like the feature I was looking for :)
@El'endiaStarman lol spoke too soon
@El'endiaStarman try again :S
@bruisedreed There you go! :)
@El'endiaStarman really? It's not displaying in the box for me - shouldn't it be?
@bruisedreed No, that's only if you post a message's permalink by itself. That's called Oneboxing, which also happens if you post images, xkcd comics, Wikipedia links, and a few other things.

@El'endiaStarman Another test...
15:51
@El'endiaStarman so I was replying to your message - how do you tell visually that your message and my reply are associated?
@bruisedreed If you mouse over a message, you should see other messages turn gray: the message it's replying to and messages that reply to it.
@El'endiaStarman and can you tell me what the dotted dividers separating some chats from other represent?
@El'endiaStarman ah ok - well that's something I guess :S
@bruisedreed That serves as a visual aid to help you know at a glance what messages you have and haven't seen yet.
@El'endiaStarman Arigatoo Gozaimasu Sensei!

@El'endiaStarman I wish to engage in discussion with Caleb about the substance of his post in this question christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/27630/… Is it still legitimate to do that in comments or not?
@bruisedreed If you mean comments like your most recent one on that post, then yes. You are directly pointing out a possible error and requesting a reference for it, which is quite encouraged. caseyr was just criticizing Caleb unconstructively.
@El'endiaStarman ok thanks
@El'endiaStarman ...and good night! super late here (Oz)
@bruisedreed Lol, it's midday over here. G'night!
