There are an absurd number of questions about masturbation on Islam.SE. Either that or I somehow always show up in here when SD has happened to report one.
I've noticed that too. Possible coincidence to be entirely fair, but I have also observed that pattern.
@hyper-neutrino Oh, hey! I never noticed you'd won that mod election I'd voted for you in! Belated congrats. :-)
I mostly only check in on Code Golf when I see something interesting in HNQ.
@CodyGray I have taken to flagging most of them as low quality when I see them; I can't believe this is the raison d'être for the Islam site
04:23
@tripleee I would not think so, no. In fact, the skeptic in me has to wonder whether they are legitimate questions, or trolls who have figured out a plausible-looking angle for trolling.
@CodyGray Oh, thank you :)
exactly
Many, many juveniles would get a real kick out of posting something containing "masturbation" that stood standing on the site.
You've actually commented on my post after I got my diamond but to be fair it was a long time ago :P
Oh
I likely didn't notice the usercard.
And that "give the users time before deleting" is something that seems to have gained currency on some of the smaller SE sites, and it really irritates me.
04:24
Yeah, probably, lol. I mean, there are many mods on many sites to remember; I guess it's by coincidence I haven't talked here while you were around so you didn't notice :P
Yup, exactly.
@CodyGray Fair enough. We have a really high success rate for HNQ - I think like, 75% of non-closed questions within the past year or something like that - because the algorithm likes answers, and we have a ridiculously high answer-to-question ratio :P
@hyper-neutrino Regarding Cody's comment on the post you just linked, I think the comment should be left after deleting the answer, otherwise the comment disappears from the user's inbox (at least that's what I think happens).
@CodyGray Hm. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it - TBH, I frequently have some troubles between being "nice" and just fulfilling my tasks and doing my job properly, though I'd like to think I've gotten better at that.
@cigien Wait, actually?? Well... that's unfortunate...
@hyper-neutrino Yup. Well, also, I look for them in HNQ, because I do like participating in some of the challenges. Waiting for the best ones in HNQ is a good way for me to limit the amount of time that I allow you guys to suck out of my day. :-)
04:29
Well, I will have to start doing that then. I have always left comments first oops.
@SmokeDetector still up
@cigien That might be true, but I'm not entirely certain. It's possible that comments from moderators don't get removed from the inbox.
I'd have to double-check. Either way, it's not that big of a deal.
The user will still see the comment left by the mod when they go to look at the answer, wondering why it's deleted.
Most answers that I delete as invalid are really old and forgotten, and more times than not, the user hasn't even been on the site for upwards of a few years, or have formally declared their permanent departure from SE since 2019
@hyper-neutrino I've hardly ever found them to be in conflict, except in the case where I have to suspend someone whom I believe is genuinely doing their best. (We have a lot of folks on SO who, uh... are well-meaning people, but just have a very unconstructive way of expressing themselves, which tends to garner a lot of unfriendly flags.)
@CodyGray Fair enough :) It's easy to waste too much time on CGCC, but at least I now get the excuse that I'm just doing my job as a mod lol.
So many questions hitting HNQ is actually something that doesn't play well into our voting culture and the whole FGITW effect, but at the same time, our site would not be able to do so well without the HNQ attention.
@CodyGray That's fair enough. I mostly get that feeling when moderating chat or replying to this one specific user I suspended like 6 socks of (though that was not really me trying to be nice, but rather restraining myself to not be unnecessarily rude especially if my sockpuppet identification was mistaken)
I actually have not suspended many users at all in like, 9 months as a mod
I don't tend to handle garbage content or problematic users so much as organize the community and relay stuff between the community and CMs TBH. Since like, everything we do goes against the SE philosophy so we have feature requests like every 3 seconds :)
04:34
@hyper-neutrino Hmm, not sure I follow the logic. What is the voting culture clash? Because certain questions that hit HNQ get upvoted head-and-shoulders above the rest, which skews the balance? I can't think of anything else. FGITW seems like even less of a problem... as you said, it's natural for CGCC questions to have tons of answers. Plus, FGITW is mainly only an issue if it discourages people from posting additional, better answers, and I doubt it does on your site.
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body (1): How to fit my html signature from photoshop to gmail? by Akira Akira on stackoverflow.com
@hyper-neutrino Yeah, moderating chat is tough. I try not to do too much of it. There are people much better at it than me.
@hyper-neutrino It's always such a different experience moderating on a smaller site. Where an SO mod will easily suspend a half-dozen users each day, on the other sites, you do maybe 1 user per month.
And that means that you agonize over each suspension.
Because it feels weird, unnatural, and all that much more personal.
@CodyGray Not so much discourages, but rather the fast-to-write submissions in golfing languages get early upvotes and a lot of people sort by activity on our site, but for people coming in from HNQ, sort-by-votes makes more sense for Q+As, and so early upvoted solutions get even more upvotes, and so the higher-effort posts that come in later tend to get less attention than they should
we've had people run analysis and experiments on this voting phenomenon and how effort and timing correlate to score and it can be discouraging to see a 3-byte jelly answer consisting of 2 builtins get so many more upvotes than a well-thought-out Haskell answer that uses some really clever features and optimizations
Overall it's not really that big of a deal, but it is a thing that's been around for as long as I can remember.
04:37
@hyper-neutrino Heh. Well, I don't really upvote solutions in golfing languages, so that's never been an issue for me. But that does make sense. I definitely leave sorting by votes on everywhere, and can hardly imagine doing otherwise. But I can say that, as someone who often posts a non-golfing solution a bit late to challenges, I'm hardly starving for attention upvotes.
@hyper-neutrino Agreed... This is why I don't really upvote golfing language solutions. For one thing, I think they're pretty lame and a waste of time. They're just not interesting to read. Yawn, someone already implemented this feature as a built-in. Seems like cheating. I'm far more impressed by, and likely to learn something by, an answer in a "real" language.
@CodyGray Fair enough. I moderate chat a fair amount even though it's hard sometimes; I guess part of it is that I spend a ton of time in chat and the main site doesn't really have mod tasks for me :P (it's not uncommon to get no flags at all for a day or two)
@CodyGray That's a good way of putting it. Suspending the same sock user multiple times made it feel personal and that got really uncomfortable for me, but fortunately it seems they went away before I had to deal with them any further (and are now on Codidact, which is kinda annoying :/)
@hyper-neutrino HAHA. Oh, it's always so much fun to talk to you small-site mods. :-) No flags for a day or two. Sometimes, on Meta SO, we get no flags for an hour or two!
The thing about chat is, you get culture conflicts. Two people might be having a relaxed conversation, joking with other, or even veering into vulgar language, but they're totally fine with it. Then someone else wanders into the room, gets offended, raises a bunch of flags... Blah. They're technically right, but also it's disruptive. You don't want to punish the users who were operating under good faith and not otherwise causing any issues.
@CodyGray Yeah, that's fair enough. Whether golfnig languages are good or bad for our site overall is... very contentious :) our first blog post was actually about that, lol. But yeah, built-in solutions get boring and I must admit I am primarily a Jelly (golfing language) golfer and only secondarily a Python user..
Plus, the moderation tools for chat suck.
04:43
Still, appreciating that requires too much familiarity with the golfing language itself, which is just not something that I can justify putting in the effort to do.
@CodyGray yeah :) funnily enough, I don't think CGCC is even really that small of a site - but yeah, our flag activity is so low and it's really nice. although IDK if it's more or less tiring to crunch flags and ban people or to coordinate a bunch of meta proposals, discussions, events, room owner elections, etc
@CodyGray That's a very good point too. A lot of people upvote because "oh, short answer, therefore good" and a lot of people don't upvote for that precise reason - knowing when a golfing language answer is really skillful and not just built-in spam isn't very easy to see which is unfortunate. But yeah, we're highlighting answers that are clever and deserve more attention / upvotes in the blog which hopefully will continue for some time
@hyper-neutrino No, it's not a small site. Just relatively speaking. But, it is certainly something of interest to me that, despite you guy's quirky/unusual rules, you still don't have a big issue with blatantly off-topic or inappropriate posts.
@CodyGray oh yeah, definitely... moderating chat takes quite a bit of nuance to consider how both sides intended and both sides interpreted, and intent or whatever (and that's if you're lucky and there are only two sides), and it's totally understandable to not want to deal with that
also yeah, chat mod tools are so bad lol
@CodyGray True. I mean, off-topic posts are pretty common, but we just close/delete those (either as a community or I just remove them), and since we replaced our room's chat feed with a bot that posts new posts within like 5 seconds, garbage doesn't stick aruond long.
Also, since we have a pretty high ratio of activity from high reputation users (at least, I feel) posts don't tend to get flagged, they just get closed directly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Oh, interesting. I haven't noticed that many off-topic questions there, and certainly not a bunch of closed questions littering the front page like broken windows.
That's the proof of a small site, though: where you're still small enough that your high-rep users can get around to handling the volume of posts that you get.
Whereas a moderator could camp out on SO's incoming firehose question page and still not be able to get around to closing everything that was off-topic or just... garbage.
@CodyGray Well, that's good to hear :) we try to keep the site clean and ideally posts that need some work get some visibility, but the garbage posts (most of which don't even belong on SE anywhere) tend to not stick around long because they get VTD'd or self-deleted or I just get rid of them

@CodyGray Fair enough. I like to leave a comment for each one unless it's extremely obvious that it has nothing to do with SO or even SE at all - but if I had to go through hundreds or thousands of those daily, I'd probably stop doing that for every single user who doesn't bother to read the tour/help/scope or know how the site works :P
Eventually, you even grow tired of having to click the appropriate radio button. Luckily, there's a userscript for that. Just type the number corresponding to the radio button of your choice, and then hit Enter.
05:10
oh that sounds very convenient
And when I don't even want to hassle with that (e.g., I'm doing a tag cleanup), I have a userscript that adds the individual close reasons as buttons at the top of the page, so a single click will both close and delete for that reason.
eventually someone will develop a userscript that just connects to you telepathically and when you see a question if you know it needs to be closed it'll just automatically do that without needing any clicks :P
@CodyGray oh that's quite cool
Yes, I am eagerly awaiting that.
For the beta version, I'd be OK with it requiring that I nod in the appropriate direction.
yeah that's something that I as a small-site mod (or honestly just a non-SO mod) cannot really relate to or understand :) it's good that you have tools to speed up the tedious process though
Single-click to suspend a spammer's account for 1 year and then destroy.
Yeah, the tools are the only way to feel like you're not just spinning your wheels.
05:14
that's convenient. (i assume your mod inbox is constantly flooded with the suspension messages then? :P)
I didn't used to be a big fan of userscripts, because I use so many different computers that keeping them installed everywhere just seemed too much of a pain.
Until I realized how much of a tangible improvement they made to my workflow. Then it became worth it.
Oh goodness. My inbox is ridiculous. I get 50+ messages per day, from chat pings, comments, mod message replies, and who knows what else. I literally cannot keep up with everything, in large part because of how SE sees fit to mark everything as read just because you drop down the inbox.

@hyper-neutrino It does have a confirmation prompt :-)
@CodyGray yeh, that's the impression I got from the spam too, it doesn't link to the spammer's site directly
@CodyGray ouch, that is... painful. (also yeah SE's inbox system is pretty terrible if you have high activity :/)
@CodyGray that's good :P
you know what's fun?
suspending chat users doesn't have a confirmation
i hate that so much
i have yet to accidentally misclick like that, but given that the button is right next to the button to refresh profile, and i have had countless requests to do that, it's always worrying lol
Doesn't it have to prompt you for a duration?
I forget. I don't use that much.
05:19
nope - it has a number input field that defaults to 1, and pushing the button applies that many hours of suspension
Oh, no. It's inline.
Yeah.
Well, at least it's a one-click unsuspend.
Worst thing that happens is you clutter up their profile history.
that is true. it does leave a permanent mark on them though
and an annotation would make it look worse becaues now they have two marks :p (unless the mod opens the page)
I think I've accidentally suspended someone once.
More often, though, what happens is I'll validate a rude flag, and it'll auto-suspend them. Which is rarely what I want to happen.
yeah, sometimes messages are rude but the user doesn't necessarily deserve the boot. no in-betwen though :/
You can unsuspend after validating the flag
