Hm. @Undo someone's declining Smokey's auto mod flags on SO: stackoverflow.com/users/flag-summary/3735529
probably not much of an issue on SO where the volume is enough to keep us out of a flag ban, but it'd be nice if they could not

@ArtOfCode relevant

cheers, hadn't seen that

@thesecretmaster Not too surprisingly, I'm attempting to reduce the complexity of the GraphQL query I posted earlier. There are several portions of that query which could be efficiently omitted, if I keep a separate list of some items and just get an ID or index for the item in a separate list (i.e. just the index into the table).
Probably the most notable items which could be just an ID are multiple instances of user (on comments, feedbacks, and flag_logs), and the detection reasons. Is there a way which I can get an ID, without needing to touch other tables (i.e. without adding "complexity" and query time)?
I tried some experimentation. In a reduced complexity test case, if I only request a user {id} property in the places I'm wanting a user, I see a complexity of about 270/post, which allows me to request about 18 posts prior to hitting the 5,000 complexity limit per query.
However, if I keep everything else the same, but just don't request any user information, then I'm able to make a request for 100 posts without hitting the complexity limit. If I request even more posts, I find that the complexity for the query has dropped to 49/post, which is, obviously, substantial.

@ArtOfCode I'm happy to ask Cody not to decline those, if that's preferred, although I'm not sure we'll get compliance. While there is information content in the declined flags, I doubt we'll ever use the information, so I don't have a strong opinion on it, other than it needs to not affect SD's ability to flag. OTOH, SD not being able to flag on SO wouldn't be all that bad, as we have lots of flaggers available for SO.
It would be a significant problem on smaller sites, where SD is a substantial portion of our total available flags for the site.

@Makyen Just so you know, if you're using whatever GraphQL spits out for "complexity", I don't know how accurate that is. I remember fiddling with it a lot when I first wrote the code, but don't know if I ever succeeded in making it actually reflective of the cost of the query.
Honestly a much better measure would probably be to just use the time the request takes.

@thesecretmaster OK. Thanks. The less "complex" one (i.e. without requesting anything user fields) did appear substantially faster (order of magnitude +), but I haven't done enough requests to discount random variability.

I remember when I first deployed GraphQL folks were poking it and could have requests that would make MS very unhappy, and the way GraphQL wants you to avoid that is with complexity. However, complexity turns out to be annoying and hard to tune.
I wouldn't worry about MS-side performance too much unless requests are routinely taking a long time, and in that case there are probably ways that we can optimize it (i.e. adding some caching).

Other than the explicit limit, which we could easily change, I'm not that concerned about complexity itself. It did appear to be something of a measure of the difficulty of the query for MS. I'll run some reasonably comparable tests with a few different configs looking at average response time over multiple requests. I'll just need to determine if I have to rotate the requested posts, or if I can just repeat the requests (easier).

Yeah, I definitely tried to make complexity accurate, but I think there are a lot of edge/corner cases that make it unreliable.

I actually started looking at this, because I noted the response time was getting slower as I made the request more generic (i.e. not the minimum that FIRE needs), to the point that the GraphQL response changed from being faster than making separate requests to the V2 API to being slower, even though the GraphQL request was launched prior to the V2 API requests, and the V2 API requests are launched in two flights (one to get the main post info and then more once the post ID is known).
I'll look at it some more and get some better numbers.
