@tripleee As far as I know, there's not a good way, unfortunately. I usually go to the SO Users page and do a search there. You then have to manually review for upper-/lower-case. I'm not sure if it's possible to create an SEDE query to look at the usernames on multiple sites. For that specific username, I'd say there are too many matches for us to blacklist that username.

@Makyen only one of them has activity in the last quarter, though, and they capitalize it differently

My opinion on username blacklists is that we should be very conservative. Unlike anything else, if one of those happens to match an innocent user, then it matches all of that user's posts. That can lead to some significant negative attention for that user, rather than just one post where a user happens to have content which trips our detections.

@ArtOfCode BTW: in searches, it looks like there's a requirement for there to be some criteria for the post body. For example, this search for usernames matching the regex (?-i:^Jack Sparrow$) produces no results,

Q: Search for usernames across the network

DaniilIn Charcoal HQ we blacklist usernames when we see them used in a lot of spam posts. We need to make sure that this username blacklist isn’t catching genuine posts though, so we search for the specific username to see how many people use it. Usually, we conduct this search on Stack Overflow, but ...

@Daniil It would have been better to write this as a request, but without the SmokeDetector background information. The username blacklist is guaranteed to be controversial and requires either considerably more explanation than you provided, or considerably less. You've left this at the point where people will create usage scenarios in their own mind that are as bad as their fear/concern will come up with.

Hey @Daniil Sure.

@MarkKirby It is possible that having a username on the username-blacklist will have potential negative consequences to innocent users. We try to minimize those potential consequences. The primary negative consequence is that the user's post, potentially more than one post, will be reported by SmokeDetector for review by humans. We can then specifically exclude that user from such detections, modify the entry to be even more specific, or remove the entry.

Right, so when we are confident that a username is only used in spam we add it to the list of blacklisted usernames. This adds a weight of 90 to the post (a weight of around 180 is needed for automatic flags to be cast). If there are a few fp's we watch it which adds a reason weight of 1 so it won't be autoflagged unless there are other reasons (e.g. a blacklised website in the body/title).

user435118
The latter is only used if the user jumps between sites so we can catch the spam they post. We mainly blacklist usernames with a ^ at the start and a $ meaning the username has to be an exact match. The username also has to be case sensitive.

we have several examples of spammers who register new accounts but keep using the same display name, so merely listing by user ID would not catch those
the example which triggered this thread was metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/domains/19140
(which seems to be a single or maximum two accounts with the user name Jack Sparrow though)

@tripleee Search is ... interesting at the moment. From experiments, it appears that you must have a requirement for the "Body" (and non-regex searches produce spurious results), so I just add a ^ regex to the "Body", which works.

@Makyen huh, weird

@tripleee The spurious results for non-regex searches are explained here. The need for a "Body" criteria is probably just a bug. I pinged ArtOfCode above mentioning it.

@ArtOfCode :) That's definitely how I've viewed my own contributions, but I try to keep in mind that sometimes it's not possible for a specific person to spend time immediately. There are things in life that are more important than this project, and the communication methods we use are not guaranteed to have even let the person know there's an issue in any particular time-frame. It's also possible for someone else to work on/fix problems, particularly if it's a more pressing issue.

Aye, of course. But where one can stick around and fix one's own bugs... tends to be helpful
