@Undo Ever considered dockerizing all the stuff on your server? That'd stop the server from exploding anymore.

Docker mostly hates me
But it's a decent idea

fp- by Tetsuya Yamamoto on Open Ethereum mining pool [MS]

Or, different idea, could some of the heavily used tables (e.g. posts, feedbacks) get hosted elsewhere? Rails will let you use multiple databases in one app.
I'd be happy to host another database with the non-sensitive stuff.

@thesecretmaster The last few have been MySQL, but that was because of RSS trying to load all the posts
And actually, it probably wasn't MySQL's fault, more Rails eating all the memory and the OOM killer deciding to roll some heads.

12:26 AM
Hrm... replicating rails would be harder

Splitting tables off is kinda intriguing, but it seems scary from a maintainability standpoint

Didn't you set memory limits on the passenger threads somewhere?

Played with concurrency, don't remember playing with memory

@Undo IIRC that's built into AR

Stuff like backups/restores seems more difficult if you have to manage it across two MySQL instances.

12:28 AM
Yeah, probably
Can you do memory limits in passenger? I'm looking at the docs, and logic says no.
What do you think of using a ulimit or cgroup for the passenger user?

@thesecretmaster Looks like Passenger is running processes as ubuntu

12:47 AM
Well, I guess not.
@Undo This?

That looks possible

If you get time, ulimits/cgroups and a new user for passenger might solve the problem.

Alternatively, is there a way to automatically restart stuff?
If I could just restart nginx & MySQL whenever they got killed, that'd also fix it

1:02 AM
Possibly, but the restarter would have to not die when the machine goes oom

Surely this is a problem someone has solved

Also, I bet the OOM killer kills system processes too

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating characters in body: How can I solve it blease by اشرف سلامه on mathematica.SE

@Undo Oh, that'd work too

Maybe there's a way to tell it to always kill off Passenger and MySQL first

1:07 AM
Or just make passenger not fully die
That seems like the easy fix, to me

@iBug You can ask Google to match text exactly by enclosing it in quotes. I agree that you still have to iterate over the results to see if it matches multiple portions of the document. I've also seen plagiarism of multiple documents in one post (actually a tag-wiki)

A J
Are they spamming or looking for an easy way to earn the rep points?

@AJ The fact that it's also used legitimately is not that uncommon for things that we watch.
We just don't blacklist in such cases, unless we can figure out a differentiation.

6:10 AM
@AJ I don't blame the website but the user because both posts are at best NAA.

@AJ I think that it's clear that something's up with these posts. It could be either of those, but I don't really see the reason to include the link, if you're just hunting rep.
Although, it might make sense to them.

A J
They might be thinking like "I found a tool for plagiarism check. Let's post it to get rep"
But I am not saying we shouldn't watch for such plagiarized answers.

@AJ Or "I found a post with the word 'plagiarism'! Now let me post this plagiarism checker I know"

But then, why plagiarize the content of their post?

A J
Keep the word under watchlist; just give feedback according to the post.
@Makyen Not sure.

@DavidPostill AIM just looks at what's sent over the WebSocket and adds each reported feedback to those displayed for the question. This results in it commonly being inaccurate when people change their feedback type. The API errors-out if you attempt to submit the same feedback as MS currently thinks you have submitted. However, I have seen instances where MS thinks there's more than one feedback from a person (e.g. I've ended up having to clear a feedback of mine that wasn't overwritten).

@quartata Dunno if you're still working on that project that used chatx, but it's now patched for openid deprecation.

@thesecretmaster Those are people who can blacklist without approval. If you’re looking for people who can commit to the Smokey repo directly, they’re in this team.

@JF Looking for people who should know if ChatExchange is/isn't patched for openid deprecation.
Given that SD is using a ChatExchange version from December, pre-deprecation-announcement, I assume it will die on the 25 unless it's updated/patched.

@thesecretmaster I haven't seen anyone from SE provide a workaround, so... we don't have one

I have ChatX working using the stackapps route
Which is pretty simple

1. Get fkey from /users/login
2. Post fkey+username+pass to /users/login
3. If a form with id 'logout-user' exists, submit it (this creates the account on stack apps if it doesn't exist)
4. Post to /users/login/universal.gif. This returns json with an array of hashes {Token: '', Nonce: '', Host: ''}
5. For each element in the hash, get "https://#{host}/users/login/universal.gif?authToken=#{authToken}&nonce=#{Nonce}" with stackapps as the origin and referrer.
6. ???
7. Profit!
This isn't exclusive to stackapps, it'll work starting with any site.
See my code here
And, if you don't want to auto-create an account, you can use the API to figure out which sites a user has accounts on.
