@quartata MS seems slow to load for me

12:04 AM
@quartata Haven't touched it

Here comes the DDoS

...this happens almost every week, it's not a DDOS

I've noticed this happening on occasion -- it suddenly becomes unresponsively slow for a few minutes

Yeah, evidently my sarcasm filter isn't working

Yep. I'm seeing timeouts for MS API accesses made by FIRE.

12:06 AM
Do we know why? Is there a query that triggers it? Is it a bad search?

it's running on a single core and makes heavy use of blocking I/O
them's the breaks

@NobodyNada I don't know if it's something that someone else is doing, but there's nothing different happening on my end.

@Undo no I mean what do the logs look like

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs has nothing to do with Smokey

regardless of whether there's one alive

Rebooting for good measure
@quartata if it's a DDoS it's the world's least enthusiastic one.

no I don't expect it to be
I just wondered if there was any exceptions
or stuff
surprising -- no fail over. could solar flare have won the lottery?

Any idea when it started happening?

12:12 AM
just now
presumably

soooo cron
let me take a peek at the whenever
couldn't have been a db dump

we'll make it easy:
# Begin Whenever generated tasks for: metasmoke at: 2018-03-21 17:55:06 +0000
0,3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36,39,42,45,48,51,54,57 * * * * /bin/bash -l -c 'cd /var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20180321175405 && bundle exec bin/rails runner -e production '\''SmokeDetector.check_smokey_status'\'''

So check_for_inactive_reasons, calculate_weights_for_flagging, or update_sites most likely

ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid (Mysql2::Error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query: SELECT  posts.id, posts.link, posts.deleted_at, posts.autoflagged FROM `posts` WHERE `posts`.`link` IN ('//stackoverflow.com/questions/49501458', '//stackoverflow.com/a/49501556', '//stackoverflow.com/a/45409091', '//stackoverflow.com/questions/49502252') ORDER BY `posts`.`id` DESC LIMIT 10 OFFSET 0):
Interesting that the log skips right from 23:57:04 to 00:01:33

12:30 AM
almost certainly a DB query then

12:41 AM
Would think so. Will have to look at the data exploder logs

I'm playing with writing a little web app, and trying to figure out a basic setup for frontend code. I've gotten a little webpack config working (I think) for JS, but what should I use to bundle the CSS?
I'm not using Rails, so I have to install things myself instead of using its fancy built-in stuff

Rob
@NobodyNada Webpack can do that, with some plugins/loaders

@Rob Okay, thanks! Is this the right plugin?

Rob
Looks promising.. but, it's been a while since I've manually setup a webpack. Wouldn't be able to tell you which is the 'in' loader for css these days

I thought I wasn't supposed to use Webpack for CSS because of this question, but maybe I was misunderstanding it. Is the idea that I require my CSS files from my JS files, and Webpack will compile everything into a bundle.js and bundle.css or something?

Rob
@NobodyNada From what I can gather, it's more of a webpack wasn't designed for css bundling. It's mainly for resolving modules. Angular, for example, uses it - but the styles are referenced via javascript. The second answer has an example not requiring javascript require()

J F
1:45 AM
@NobodyNada It looks like css-loader only parses CSS, and you need something like style-loader — which spits the concatenated CSS into a <style> client-side — to actually do anything with it.

@JF Thanks! Will Webpack output a bundle.css, or will bundle.js dynamically inject the CSS?

J F
@NobodyNada the latter, but it looks like there’s a file-loader you can use instead of style-loader to do the former
(I.e. importing the CSS file will give you the URL to it)
If you’re generating all of the DOM in JS, you might want to look into CSS Modules.

@JF thanks!
@JF I'm definitely not generating all of the DOM in JS -- I prefer when websites work okay with JS disabled, so I'm not writing one that needs JS for everything :)

Got it.
That was kinda complicated and annoying
@quartata or something...

@quartata FIRE currently handles reports based primarily on the associated SE post URLs. Thus, it's not, currently, that great with dealing with duplicate reports. In fact, it just punts and always uses the most recent. I'm in the process of re-working FIRE to deal primarily with MS post IDs, which should allow it to reasonably handle this type of situation. This is complicated by the fact that SD reports only contain the SE URL, not a MS post ID (which doesn't necessarily exist when SD posts).

yeah, it's a nightmare
Inferno architecturally won't have this problem, since the report would exist first

2:35 AM
We should add in to the !!/feedback command MS post url or even just post ID. (so it can be MS or SE post url)

@WELZ I requested that. It was categorically refused.

Either way, I figured out a way to do it so meh.

Here. @quartata explained briefly that something only accepts the SE post URL. I assumed that it was in the path being used to actually apply the feedback. It appeared clear that it wasn't possible given the way it (at least the !!/feedback command) is currently implemented.

yeah it needs MS changes

I'll just have FIRE do it. It's something I was already planning on and partially implemented. I had just hoped it would be easy on that side. :-)

@gparyani As others said, that's incorrect. The links which SD posts are always referencing the SE URL for the post that's being reported. It doesn't reference the MS post ID. It's posted in chat even before the MS post ID exists for the report (so I've been told). The problem arises when the same SE post is reported more than once, which happens enough such that the tools not handling it well results in disproportionate inconvenience.

@Makyen Thanks for the explanation.

@AJ Re this comment: While I can understand the frustration of dealing with vandalism and other common types of issues, it's helpful to be a bit less blunt when leaving a comment. I know that it's really not worth the time to write out a nice comment for each such occurrence. The autocomments userscript makes it easy to quickly leave a reasonable comment without having the frustration show through.

@angussidney You marked both this and this as fp. Both are, identical, requests from the same user that people provide survey information (supposedly) and email it off-site. However, this Meta states that requests for off-site survey participation should be flagged as spam. Admittedly, it's only asking for the data to be emailed instead of a link.
Personally, I'd consider these spam and flag them as such. [Note that this was two reports about the same question].
