@iBug Sorry for the delay. The time I expected to have at that point, and considerable free time since then, has been taken up with real-life issues that have resulted in some people going to jail. I should be able to finish up getting a new version out in the next 36 hours.

@Makyen I'm gonna go out on a limb and declare that a valid excuse... O.o
All sorted now, I hope

@ArtOfCode Since you're here, stupidity check on the idea I posted earlier about dropping the body column from posts and defining Post#body to grab it from redis (prolly memoized)?

@Makyen sorry to hear that. Hope you get on well!

@ArtOfCode Thanks. :-; Unfortunately, it's likely to be an issue that will take time intermittently, but, overall, at a relatively low level, at least for me.

Not too worried about disk space; that's cheap. RAM is less cheap, that'll be the bind point.

@iBug Thanks. I'm fine. For me, it just takes time and effort dealing with it. The major impact is on other people. Nobody was physically harmed, so there isn't that sort of thing to deal with.

3:59 AM
@Undo t3.small increases vCPU, not memory, right?

@thesecretmaster right, plus price :)

I thought t2.small was more expensive than t3.small?

Yes. T3 has (slightly) reduced prices

@Undo Also, if you've got a sec, you mentioned a while back that you weren't comfortable moving MS to other peoples hardware for a bunch of reasons. I'm curious, why? Because maybe if that stuff could be addressed, I could get to do more redis fun because we'd have more memory :)

For one, whomever controls metasmoke has a crapload of power around track-covering with nefarious stuff. Right now, I'm the only one that could covertly 6-flag nuke stuff without anyone noticing (among plenty of other things). It's a responsibility I'm willing to take. Not willing to allow anyone else to get accused of that.
Did we ever figure out how spam/RA flags stack?
Is it 6 (spam + RA) flags or ((6 spam) OR (6 RA)) flags?

4:15 AM
@Undo Stuff like that could be fixed with better logging/alerting though. E.g. lambda sends email to Undo if > 4 flags are cast on any post.

Trivial to get around that kind of thing, unfortunately.

How? Only you have deploy access to lambda code.

4 MS flags + two well-hidden puppets are still way easier than managing 6 well-hidden puppets

@Undo Based on my experience, casting an R/A flag on posts that have been autoflagged is just as effective at causing the post to be deleted as casting a spam flag. So, my belief is that it's 6 (spam + RA) flags.

Honestly, MS hosting is the rare thing that you're just not going to sway me on.

4:18 AM
Ok
I just want more memory for redis :P

What are these a1 instances?
also, @thesecretmaster how feasible is it to run Redis on a separate server? Might make a bunch of sense to do that.

@Undo Easy, unless network latency
Otherwise I'd offer to run it :P

How much do you care about network latency?
I can probably get sub-ms in the same AZ

That'd be fine, but also please don't spend money on this

(also, fun fact - AZs are randomized between AWS accounts, so my us-east-1a isn't your us-east-1a)
@thesecretmaster Well, here's the thought: I could move both MySQL and Redis to another host, leaving current host to only worry about Ruby. Might make reliability a lot better for very minimal $

4:28 AM
@Undo If you'd do it just for mysql, then go for it, but I think we talked about two t2.micro vs one t2.small and you liked 1 t2.small better.

@Undo That's how my company does Zones too. We do it for better load balancing. Otherwise everyone always picks "A", even if we give them multiple options.

I don't think that performance/reliability gain is significant enough to be worth spending your money on.
As much as I'd love to get to play with redis :)

Seriously, money is not a huge issue for me. I can make enough to run this project for years in a few hours.
So I can turn a t2.small reservation into three t2.micros.
hrmmm

@Undo Still, I don't want to make you pay for my redis fun.

this is a flat conversion; wouldn't be significant out-of-pocket
1GB RAM x3 should be plenty to put Rails on one, Redis on one, MySQL on one
that'd be closer to being a competent sysadmin, too

4:42 AM
@Undo Yep easily. Bonus points for the 2 vCPUs (t3) on the redis instance, since that'd half the search time once I get this stupid multithreading working.

How's Redis work with disk space? Any overhead to worry about?

Nope
Well, config dependent
AOF can get pretty big if you configure stuff bad.

a... Chicago-based hardcore punk band originally active between 1981 and 1985?

Append only file, logs all redis queries for easy restoration after crashes. Is rewritten in the background once it gets too big.

oh

4:46 AM
Kinda cool, lets redis be as reliable as traditional rdbs
Redis has two kinds of persistence, one is regular snapshots, the other is AOF.
The more I work with redis the more I grow to love it.
I hit a snag when I was writing my redis module (I had an out of date mirror of the docs), and when I asked about it (with mcve and all), the developer of redis got back to me within hours and was super helpful and nice.

@thesecretmaster What kind of CPU consumption would you project?
I'd guess high bursts, but only during search?

@Undo Depends on search frequency. On dev, it just about pegs a core for the duration of the search.

that'll work

Otherwise, it should be pretty low
Redis is single threaded

What's an average search duration?
Few seconds?

5:08 AM
Just want an order of magnitude

This one takes 20s on dev.
That seeems like a heavy one though
I'd estimate that the average search is under 5s

k, that's workable on a t3

Don't want our FPs to interfere with normal site flow, that's basically the worst case scenario outside of actually nuking FPs

@Undo By the way, does this mean that you're doing this?

Probably. It makes a heck of a lot of sense in a bunch of ways, not just Redis
Not right now, too close to bedtime to be messing with that kind of thing
I didn't really know how exchanging reserved instances worked until now.

@Undo Those are good points. Interferring with the site beyond getting red-flaggable (and some NAA) posts deleted really isn't something we want to be doing.

@Undo How does it work?

tpu- feedback received on Setup for Brother Printer HL-1112? [MS]

5:31 AM
@thesecretmaster Looks like I can change a reserved instance into different one, or a set of different ones, as long as the sum of costs of the new set is >= the costs of the old reservation.
Best part is the expiration dates stay the same (so I get reservations that expire in early 2020, not late 2021) and upfront costs are prorated

Oh, interesting. I mean, why wouldn't AWS let you do that, but cool.
