Bah, responsive design is hard.

@ArtOfCode You might find these helpers from the Charcoal website useful.

@JF I would've done if I hadn't written my own :) Cheers, though
honestly the hardest bit is making main navigation work cross-device with pure CSS

J F
@ArtOfCode Check out how min handles it: <75 LOC navbar SCSS and its docs (scroll down to “Navbars”)

@ArtOfCode Say can you change the pinned repositories

yes

Maybe go something like this: SmokeDetector metasmoke helios on the top row, userscripts website coal on the bottom

nah, keeping it to 3

why?

6 gets too tall when you actually want the repo list
so much scrolling

I have no idea if it's anything

@JF Makes no sense.

2:49 AM
Parts of their GH profile were in Chinese (it was the same person who opened up that weird MS pr) so I just assumed
But it's just syllables

It's sort of garbage. Unreadable in Chinese.
And the weird pull request #306 on MS.

That's what I meant actually. Autocorrect

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating characters in answer, blacklisted user: Why was Raven peddling drugs on the street? by Your all a bunch of cunts on scifi.SE (@Mithrandir)

Autocorrect can destroy Pinyin.

2:53 AM
@SmokeDetector k for R/A
@SmokeDetector Mod flag for username coming.

@ArtOfCode replied or fixed most of the things, except for making get_bot a before_action:

Blacklisted user - blacklisted for //scifi.stackexchange.com/a/178896 (m.erwaysoftware.com/posts/by-url?url=//scifi.stackexchange.com/…) by http:https: //chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/11540?m=42267382

These don't really seem to work the same as decorators, how would I pass in the resulting bot object to the route method?

J F
@quartata @bot = ...
then use @bot in the route method.

2:58 AM
I've seen Metasmoke do that and I swear that makes no sense to me as a pattern. seems gross even though I suppose it is thread safe since they're separate instances

J F
Are requests synchronous in Ruby?

Hm?

@quartata you don't. You have access to the same state in the action as you do in the before_action callback - so set @bot and it'll be accessible in the action

Depends on the Rails server if that's what you mean

@JF as far as a Rails app is concerned, yes
@quartata "most"? :P

3:01 AM
Did I miss something?
I mean your comments

there's like 5 or 6 without responses

J F
@quartata Art says they’re synchronous, meaning that only 1 request is using that controller object at a time.
(I’m more used to Node, where multiple requests can be processed at once, so you have to be a little careful with global state.
)

Wheeeee pluralization errors
Now I got to check my spelling and my grammar
there may be such a thing as excessive readability
@ArtOfCode Should I be using has_many :through for the subscriptions? Just found out about it and I think this is what it's for

@quartata link me some code?

and you're proposing to add what?
has_many :what, through: :what

I think it should be has_many :post_types, :through => :subscriptions

3:25 AM
uhhhh
yes

OK cool
I just found out about it, seems useful but wanted to make sure I understood it correctly

cuz it's like a has_and_belongs_to_many but the join table is a model
that's how I remember it anyway

Is there a corresponding belongs_to for posttype

@quartata PostType is also a has_many :through
has_many :bots, through: :subscriptions

Ah, perfect
Now I don't have to look up Subscriptions directly either

3:30 AM
once you've used Rails for a while you really appreciate ActiveRecord :P

I'm sure I could leverage it better

I've gotta do a web app as coursework, but it's all Node and Express and raw SQL and no ORM :(

update_from_config probably sucks
I do have to say Rails creates a lot of pretty much blank files. I'm going to have to go through all this JS it made

@quartata you can just leave it, it all gets precompiled into one file in prod

Oh I know, just a neat freak
Next step: setting up http.cat
@JF Have I mentioned how fire the Charcoal website is already
Was going in to see if I could steal some of your CSS and couldn't help but stop and admire it

3:39 AM
@quartata fire?
@ArtOfCode are you allowed to add any other packages?

@angussidney 🔥🔥🔥

I might be missing context or pop culture knowledge, but ‘how fire the website is already’ doesn’t make sense sorry

Well cool is too cold
Fire is warmer
That's the logic I think

@angussidney yeah, some, but an ORM is pushing it

@ArtOfCode report to GH maybe?

3:45 AM
@angussidney eh, they haven't bothered me enough for that yet :)

Have we heard anything more from those weblineindia people?
Maybe they’ve given up :P
@ArtOfCode what about using a NoSQL database? Or does it have to be relational

@angussidney I could do that - I can choose the backing store - but I have zero experience with NoSQL databases

I’ve used a simple, lightweight one with Node+Express before, it’s called NeDB I think

@angussidney can't say I have

@ArtOfCode it’s pretty easy, I picked it up in about an hour
It’s pretty similar to MongoDB, so you can move to a more production-ready DB later if you need to

3:54 AM
@angussidney I'm gonna stick with what I know, since this actually reflects on my grade
@angussidney heh, I've never used that either :)
like the brief for this is pretty extensive and I know what I'm doing

@ArtOfCode I thought you used redis?

MongoDB's quite nice

some of my classmates are going to fail spectacularly

@ArtOfCode Me neither, it’s just what I’ve heard

but I can just keep it closed-source so if they really wanted to do that they'd have a hard time

how are they going to grade you on the code?

ugh I'm gonna have to do user sessions and all
@quartata they're gonna have to see it for that, obviously, but I don't have to open-source it on GH
Slap copyright notices all over it
and watch as usual for it coming up anywhere it shouldn't

well the copyright is implicit in that case
uness there's something else you agreed to

4:02 AM
Copyright's always implicit, that doesn't mean slapping copyright notices all over serves no purpose :)
@quartata well I don't think there is
but if there is then I just present it to my employer as a business interest and they can fight over who gets it

First time I've had a response to why wildly off-topic questions appear on Meta.SE, apparently the app: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/305748/…

FYI the Android app does not have a delete option. They need to open the question itself in a browser.

Ahh OK - yeah I deleted the Android app it was just missing too much to make it useful IMO

@PeterJ I tried the Android app once and decided to stay away from it.
The only feeling I had had after trying it out is: Holy crap.

While I didn't personally find it useful about the only advantage I could see was notifications, but other than that didn't see much point over just using a mobile browser

12:27 PM
@PeterJ If you visit SE frequently like me, notification isn't a big problem, as you have none on a desktop.
If I were to give a suggestion to the apps, I would say dismiss the dev team and merge them into the mobile web team.
