@AjayBrahmakshatriya my situation is slightly different, I've been a registered user since 2012 I think so I'm not eligible for the free plan. I could obviously register a new account but I googled for a bit and found a site which suggested I could get free services from AWS too (sorry, no link, I'll try to dig it up if we need to delve deeper). A brief check with Google Cloud suggests they let you run f1.micro for free but I'm guessing probably data transfers will still be billed like you imply.
but in my current AWS bill the vast bulk is the EC2 cost. $12 a month I can bear but if we want this to be sustainable, we should look for plans where ideally we would not have to worry about having someone pay out of their own pocket

@tripleee I see, I had checked with Google Cloud too. They give you some credits(I think $100) for the first year. Which should be okay for a year including all costs, but after that they only provide the instance for free. Although data transfer costs should be very less. But yes not if we don't want people to pay from their pocket.
@Glorfindel good find
@AjayBrahmakshatriya $300, just looked
@angussidney That should be more than enough for a year right? The instances are anyway free during and after. Only the bandwidth is what will cost. What is your average data transfer on the present instances you have?
I don't know
I should have a look
this applies to all of our infra of course but I'm just looking for hosting for Halflife which isn't in any sort of production use yet
08:04
When my instance was the active Smokey, it was using about 150 kilobytes a day (network in)
Which is pretty damn low
And about 10kB when it was on standby
About 26kB network out while active, 2kB when on standby
Halflife projection for September: EC2 $5.77, data transfer $0.04, tax $1.39 (updated projection $7.20, was approx $12)
150 KBs seem pretty low?? A simple API call would return 1 KB of data (assuming it is using 100 queries). That seems like only 150 API calls a day?
I might set up some monitoring

what's the significance of the "New IDs / Hybrid Intermediate IDs" message btw?
Sep 11 at 9:31, by ArtOfCode
@tripleee that's what stops us missing things across restarts
They should all be getting the same IDs. In the smokey console of my instance at least, it gets these
08:51
mmm but if you switch to a different instance, it doesn't know what messages the failed instance had already processed, does it?
Yeah, whenever you start up a new instance after a while you get a huge wall of IDs for every site
@tripleee it just processes every single new post since it last was active
All the failed ones would be re-processed though, right?
so it could have been expected to eventually discover the post which was reported manually above?
Ohh manually reported? I don't know about that.
Wait, no, not manually reported
But in the case of something that would have been caught, we have to wait until another post from MSE bumps the site and causes us to check all posts since last active
