@Undo It looks to me like there are drops in Aurora's scan rate just like you predicted; it drops to zero just before this failure, and at 19:00 on Sunday, it drops to zero until this restart.

Aha! I have defeated the dastardly firewall!

For some reason, the university decided they were going to allow SSH access (password-based :( ) from anywhere, but access to port 80 has been restricted to the university's network only. So instead of just hitting the VM's IP, I now have to hit my EC2 server in the US, which has a reverse port-forward from the VM's web server. It fetches content, and sends it back to me.

By the time it gets to me, the content has travelled about 24,000km.
