@Oldskool were you still looking to get privileges for SD so you can feedback etc?

@angussidney Eventually that would be nice, yes :-) But I was told to just stick around here for some longer and get the gist of how things work.

@Oldskool yeah, SOCVR is a bit more careful about who they give privs to in their room

8:02 AM
@angussidney Yeah, but I totally understand that. If they just hand it out to everyone who asks it might compromise the quality of the feedback and thus make things less efficient if wrong feedback is given. Better to watch from the sidelines for a while to see how things work.

@Oldskool However we're a bit more lenient than they are, so if you ping one of these people I reckon they'd add you to the list, and I'd be happy to support your request
You seem to have the hang of the ropes

@Oldskool We have automatic quality control for feedback
SD admins manually go through it on a regular basis and invalidate feedback that they feel is wrong

@Magisch Ah, nice.

If a user has >4% invalid feedback, we consider that too much and softban them
Nobody has hit that yet

<4%? I reckon that should be >4%? :)

Haha, well I could also still use some coffee ;-) For a friday morning, it's early.
So could've just as easily made that mistake ;-)

If you also make a MetaSmoke account here and get it review approved you can link your SE account to it and view your feedback. You'll then also be able to use Art's automatic feedback userscript
In fact If you're going to want feedback privs I would recommend you go for a MS account, too

BTW: Where can I see my invalid-feedback rate?

@Ferrybig Thanks. :-)
And @Magisch as well for the actual PR of course :)

How long does an API ban due to backoff violation last?

@Magisch That's not documented: api.stackexchange.com/docs/throttle

@Magisch 24 hours
and by that I mean until UTC 00:00 the next day
It's IP specific so just get someone else to host smokey

After you fix the backoff violation, ofc

8:36 AM
The problem smokey has isn't caused because smokey violated the backoff, its caused because smokeye expects a certain string in the reply of the SE api, because its required by the documentation, but doesn't find this field (quota_remaining)
!!/apiquota

@Ferrybig The current API quota remaining is 8439.

did someone change the filter or something?

@Ferrybig aye, but the field isn't there because we violated the backoff, so the API gives us an error.

@ArtOfCode can you contact a CM to get this api ban lifted?

@Magisch are we sure it's a ban?

8:42 AM
Instead, let's run an experiment of what happens if the charcoal team gets a collective vacation for a day

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer: Keyboard for programmers? by ArtOfCode on hardwarerecs.stackexchange.com

we're not banned

@ArtOfCode Isn't any backoff violation a ban?

no, it's just an error

@Magisch No, it's just a cooldown.
Just means "wait X seconds before asking again".
After which you can query as you were used to.

8:43 AM
@ArtOfCode I just started writing some documentation on the various user features of metasmoke: github.com/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/wiki/…

like {'error_name': 'backoff', 'error_message': 'Violation of backoff parameter.', 'error_code': 400}

But if you don't honor it, it will increase the backoff time.
So if Smokey kept requesting it might be a few hours now.
More details there.

obviously WIP, but I want to hear your opinion on it so far

@ArtOfCode Just realising that the error is a combination of 2 different problems, that the quota_remaining is missing, and that we should wait

aye

8:46 AM
@Ferrybig quota_remaining may not be returned if a backoff is set?
That would explain it.

but, how long should we wait?

@Oldskool no, quota_remaining isn't returned in any error responses
we just need to actually honor the backoffs we're given

maybe plus a second or so to make sure we're doing it right
@ProgramFOX Yeah, I know, but we're clearly violating it somehow.

8:47 AM
That would be a bug on SE side if they rounded the backoff time down
But yes, some padding could be useful

Really funny how the sign_in page gives an error when you are already logged in

@Magisch also shrug... It might be better to roll them all into one or two longer pages with more subsections, rather than twenty short pages? Don't know.

@ArtOfCode On MS I see both you and Jan have a "From ArtOfCode/FDSC" note with your review. Is that a plugin or something?

@Oldskool there are a number of things like that. A feedback can either say (a) just the username, if it's from chat; (b) "From Review", if it's from review on metasmoke, or (c) "From <AppName>" if it's from an application that created the feedback via the MS API.
ArtOfCode/FDSC is the name attached to the userscript I wrote that automatically sends feedback if you cast a spam flag.

Its short for "Flag Dialog Smokey Controls" which is what the userscript is called

@angussidney Yeah, that's why I was in doubt. Sometimes you see edits like this or just xxxxxx. That's not really spamming, just stupid. :)
But this was a new post with only this garble in it.
So I guess tpu- makes more sense then.

9:55 AM
the difference in tp- and tpu- is in blacklisting the user, we don't want to blacklist a user who has many good posts, as all his good posts are also reported when mokey sees them, and he in on the blacklist, but if a spammer posts a new post from his account, then we want to have the spammer on the blacklist

Yeah, makes sense. Thanks for explaining.
