@ArtOfCode well that uuid there is from uuidgen on my laptop

@JanDvorak you didn't actually try to use ^ as an operator, did you?

Okay, I'm trying something. Temporarily enabling real flags (not dry run). I'm going to abstain from flagging anything it does so we're not actually adding any flags. Also, I'm logged in an Smokey in a browser so we can revert any bad flags (which shouldn't happen anyway).

As long as we're only flagging dead-obvious spam like we are right now, I don't think we need to

We're not doing cold fusion? :'(

@ArtOfCode Cold fusion would be okay, it's hot fission you want to avoid
Louis Alexander Slotin (1 December 1910 – 30 May 1946) was a Canadian physicist and chemist who worked on the Manhattan Project. During World War II, Slotin conducted research at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He performed experiments with uranium and plutonium cores to determine their critical mass values. On 21 May 1946, Slotin was conducting a demonstration when he accidentally initiated a fission reaction, which released a burst of hard radiation. He received a lethal dose of radiation and died of acute radiation syndrome nine days later. Slotin was the second person to die from a criticality...

And here I was thinking we were making critical scientific breakthroughs

Someone was defending his rights to edit spam by saying automated spam filters don't matter

@JanDvorak lemme guess, don't edit spam?

1:33 AM
Yep

The "don't edit spam" battle is one that we're not going to win through argument

we should retrain this user.

Just nuking all the spam before people can edit it would be preferable.

I vote forcing them to learn COBOL and Fortran.

The discussion was closed by him stating "don't worry, I only edit 1% of spam anyways"

better, sentence them to two years. Of programming entirely in machine code, that is.

That's no punishment

@ArtOfCode better idea

Does editing clear existing spam flags?

@ArtOfCode force them to use a punch-card computer for two years, for everything
@Undo no

Now, machine code interfacing with win32 API...

@ArtOfCode Win3.11

1:36 AM
@Undo rollbacks might invalidate the flags, but not plain edits

I'm still wondering when trolls learn the trick

Okay, so here's a potential path forward on the integration thing: As a no-effort option for SE, just allow us to cast up to 5 (maybe 6) flags at our option. Boom, spam lasts no time at all.
I would have no issue casting 5 flags at 99.9x% accuracy

I'd like to see full transparency in that case

Sure, and probably reports emailed to people.

Hell, I would have no issue unilaterally nuking posts at 99.96% accuracy.

@ArtOfCode yeah, but meta would

@JanDvorak transparency in the chat, how?

Oh, as in "whoop whoop, I automatically killed this" automated messages?

As in, that SD/MS would report his flagging behavior here

yeah

We can pack it with the feedback report

Sure

Not easily we can't

as in, "tp- by LoremIpsum, casting 5 additional flags"

Maybe do 3 flags up front, 2 more after a tp
Also has the advantage of enriching the flag counts folks who donate their tokens for the cause.

I'd prefer waiting until feedback in any case

We're talking spam deletion times under a second on SO now

@JanDvorak If we're casting any more than one or two, I'd generally agree

@JanDvorak even at 99.96%?

Q: Allow retracting flags from the API

UndoFor a project I'm working on, it'd be nice to be able to retract flags through the API. We allow people to retract flags from the web. Could this functionality be extended to the API? It could work such that you receive a 'Retract Flags' option on calls to /questions/{id}/flags/options, then pas...

^ this'd be really nice, we could bail automatically after a few minutes or whatever conditions we want

Plus, if SD only delivers the killing blow, we don't have to worry about somebody not being able to flag because the autoflag was from his account

1:44 AM
That brings up another thing. @ArtOfCode think we should randomize github.com/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/blob/master/app/models/… to spread flags around if this is run with more than a couple active accounts?
@JanDvorak That's true
any spammers watching the room, I wouldn't mind having a few test subjects

@Undo yeah, otherwise you and I and any other early UIDs are gonna get all the flags

which would be okay for me, but yeah :P

which is another advantage of having SD on the system account, actually

I guess Smokey could just imagine having a low ID :-)

Metasmoke ID. System is -1, so it generally wins

1:48 AM
Well it's currently UID -1, so it doesn't get any lower

Autoflagging is status green

where's the autoflagging watch page on MS?
or is it still secretonly

thank you

Flagging probably deserves its own top-level item in the toolbar

Aye.
metasmoke sorta has three levels of importance... If it's on the tools page, it's useful but mostly unimportant. If it's in the dropdown, it's important, but not a big thing. Top level menu items are big things.
@Undo could add a status indicator to the menu item, like status

1:59 AM
Another feature that would help auto flagging is being able to determine the status of a flag. Then we could automatically look into ones that were declined
11
Q: Add ability to get flag status via API

AndyAs a companion to my other feature request regarding flag statuses, and a previous feature request for the same thing, I would like to request the ability to get a flag's status via the API. There are applications that allow you to flag questions, answers and comments without being on a Stack Ex...

Yep, that'd be nice
@ArtOfCode Yeah

@Undo @ArtOfCode I'd like to see an "Active", "Dry Run" or "Disabled" status indicator too, on the page, to show whether actual flagging is enabled or not
but that's just me

@ThomasWard /flagging has that
first module

@ThomasWard We have it on /flagging, but it'd be sane to have it on the flag log page too

ah, cool.

2:02 AM
@Undo if you're still looking for opinions on this, I think randomization or a rotating queue of users would be good to have.

@ArtOfCode I meant on the log page, as @Undo suggested

@Andy Rotating would be nice, but harder

@Undo +1

Yeah, could do that too

At 50-100+/day, randomization should be just as good.

2:04 AM
👍

@ArtOfCode We could, but that's one more query on every page

My suggestion was to always take the least recently active, where auto-flag counts as activity

Easily cacheable, though
@JanDvorak That'd also work, and be easier to implement.

@Undo true

It was originally shot down as too complicated :-D

@JanDvorak closevoting is something that requires site-by-site knowledge of what is on-topic and what is not. it therefore is quite hard to automate using one single bot

2:18 AM
@ThomasWard You're fine to just leave it

It's not easier if you split it over several bots :-)

I have my own switches

@JanDvorak but you deal with less code at a time, plus the respectable members of each community can customize their autoclosevoting bot to make it cast close votes as accurately as possible without messing with other communities' configurations

Rob
Right - not sure if there's a way to search for that on MS yet
I do think it's good that there are a few posts not autoflagged, better to have false negatives than false positives

absolutely, but I'm looking for weaknesses in our heuristics which could be addressed

so far, the metric looks like it's working fine, but there is rather significant overlap between some of the heuristics, so there's a risk that the weight could be inflated by multiple rules tagging on to the same pattern
