@Undo @ArtOfCode Remember when we set up the blacklist of pp modes this summer? Well...I just discovered it's not completely fixed. I fixed the bug; would you like me to create a PR?

Go for it
what did we miss?

Apparently MiniProfiler doesn't care about authorize_request unless some configuration is set

that... doesn't help

So we're not actually blocking those modes?
Oops

Well, for some reason it was working sometimes on metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com, but it was never working on my machine

1:01 AM
Okay, so because of some troll trying to edit spam into RFC3 too, I've turned link sharing off. Happy to give people access to it if they still want it; send me an email address for your Google account at hello@artofcode.co.uk.

Sounds like you're off to a pretty good start either way ;)
@ArtOfCode good grief. I didn't know we were that popular

Troll cancelled his suggested edit when he realised I'd have to approve it, but Troll didn't bank on me getting realtime notifications to my phone about his nefarious practices.
I have my suspicions who it is, and let it be known that trolls are not welcome here.

lol

@ArtOfCode Can you make Google Docs read-only?

1:05 AM
@NobodyNada I can, but then y'all wouldn't be able to comment, which is not what we want.

@ArtOfCode ugh...put it on GitHub, maybe?

@NobodyNada will review

okay; keep in mind that I barely know Ruby

@NobodyNada Not worth it. I'm not gonna put myself to more effort because of some lowlife troll who thinks he's funny; I'll just turn his access off.
Yeah, I'm gonna do an actual code review on it instead of the usual once-over

good point

1:07 AM
@ArtOfCode can you add my account. It's my email address on HR

done

Thanks

@NobodyNada I assume you've tested that your new stuff actually works?

yeah

Hard to have any problems in one line of code, so if it works as-is I'm happy with it.

1:10 AM
great, thanks!

fp- by NobodyNada

Deployed @Nobody

confirmed working

something's still not working with it
go to the mini profiler, click "more", and click "profile-gc"

did we blacklist that one?

1:32 AM
yeah

Huh.
Maybe we just go nuclear then. Instead of trying to render the page normally but without the profiler, if the pp param is one of the blacklisted modes, just chuck an error

env and analyze-memory work as they should from the help page, but profile-gc and profile-memory don't

okay, in that case...
In application controller, down the bottom in setup_miniprofiler, remove the unless block

interestingly, they don't work properly, -- profile-gc mixes the page and the garbage collector stats

replace it with...

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in answer: how do I scan the windows partition for malware? by loran on unix.stackexchange.com

if blacklisted_modes.include? params[:pp]
  raise ActionController::RoutingError.new("COMPUTER SAYS NO")
else
  Rack::MiniProfiler.authorize_request
end

would you like me to do that?

yeah, go for it

okay :)
Now it returns the error page mixed with the result of profile-gc

O.o
I'm gonna guess it's because profiler is working at a lower level than Rails is... @Undo, thoughts?

1:42 AM
Might be in the middleware?
Either way, it looks like it really wants to leak stuff out of that.

ooze ooze

Oh, here's what's going on: MiniProfiler checks for authorization before it runs env, but after it runs profile-gc.

@Glorfindel metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/… shows 0, I guess the Metasmoke check simply uses the limited MySQL regex syntax?

tpu- by Jan Dvorak

@tripleee my thoughts exactly. Or it doesn't even use regex at all.

(oops, forgot to check the "regex" checkbox, but the result is the same)
@Glorfindel but then "when you use spaces" is not the correct diagnostic, it's "when you use PCRE regex extensions"

Regex does work (e.g. metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/…), but I'm not sure if \s does

\s is regex for whitespace

8:55 AM
We know, but we're not sure if it works on MS

@JanDvorak trad regex doesn't have this, it was introduced in Perl 5 and then trickled down to Python, Java etc but not e.g. to MySQL

oh?

@Glorfindel You don't have code privileges, but I've created a pull request for you.

I might see if we can replace the \s with a space on the Smokey side in the PR so that MS can search it properly

@angussidney that's an easy fix but the full PCRE repertoire like (?:foo(?!bar)) cannot be expressed in trad regex

Or, just do it before we even blacklist, so that the blacklist file remains readable

9:00 AM
oh and \s was already in Perl 4 actually

@tripleee true, but short of changing our backend, there isn't much else we can do

@angussidney the TP/FP check could run on Python instead of in Metasmoke

When SQL says "regex support", they mean just that. The core.

and/or I guess Ruby supports PCRE

@JanDvorak Not necessarily a bad thing, but I do want to say that it is better to adjust or add patterns where possible rather than blacklisting static keywords/websites etc, as it allows us to catch spam in the future more effectively. But that doesn't mean you should stop blacklisting stuff.

@JanDvorak googling for this term doesn't bring any obvious hits, what's that?

On an unrelated note, congratulations and thanks everyone for helping us catch 50000* posts since the beginning of Metasmoke!

Why wasn't it detected as image by new user?

@JanDvorak that's only on Academia, isn't it?

Oh. I suggest we turn it on on more sites.

Well, on Graphic Design it's going to yield a lot of fps.

I suspect so, but do we have data on that?

12:10 PM
No. I guess I could write a SEDE query for that.

I think there was one when the discussion on Graphic Design happened
hang on
it's a bit more complex because it also looks for external href links

Thanks. It will also skip users whose reputation has increased since the first post, but it's a good indication of why we shouldn't turn the filter on on Graphic Design.

12:36 PM
you can run it for different sites, too, though that might require logging in to SEDE
