@ProgramFOX yeah, websockets are struggling
Okay, folks, here's an idea for another project (not mine, from the Room Which Must Not Be Named):
Cross-site duplicate detection
Here's what I'm thinking:
- Bind to the websocket like Smokey does (we could probably hang this on Smokey, but he seems a little bloated already)
- When a new post comes in, look up the network account ID for the user, and store it with a link to the post.
- For every post that comes in, also check the existing database for other posts from them on different sites.
If they match, go grab the bodies for each from the API. If Levenshtein distance < x, report
If we really wanted to we could have an autoflag (shouldn't be hard to get 200 rep on a site with it)
But for now a chat report would be enough
@SmokeDetector fpu

@Undo Registered question as false positive, whitelisted user and added title to Bayesian doctype 'good'.

Issues would be mostly performance, can we handle checking the last week's (or so) worth of posts every time a new one comes in?
We'd probably need to go for a full SQL database.

Yeah, a week or so seems reasonable

So for a database, we probably ought to store Site, PostId, CreationDate, NetworkAccountId, Title, Body

Sam
@Undo I dunno if it's worth mentioning, but I'd happily offer (remote) access to Yam if it'd help. (Yam fetches question/answer data real-time, then passes it on to Pham/Gham for checking.)

@Sam That's based on the websocket too, right?

Sam
Correct.

I don't think the problem is going to be getting the data, it'll more be about storing it

Sam
Ah, I see.
Well, Yam also has a week's log.

6:19 PM
that might be helpful
not sure

Sam
Hmm.

Sam
Why not check posts regardless of the user?

@Sam My thought was that most crossposts are going to be by the same user.
We can take the network account ID and check for posts previous to it on other sites.
(remember we don't necessarily have the body yet)
Then if we find one, send an API call to get its body, and run the check on it

Sam
But I can supply the body/rep/author rep/tags.

6:28 PM
@Sam Easily searchable?

Sam
@Undo I was thinking of another socket.

@Sam Oh, from you to me?
That'd work

Sam
Yeah.

Oh wait, are you running this on a Internet-accessible thing?
We could rely on the socket being established from EC2, but then we lose flexibility to bring it down to my closet server if something bad happens

Sam
@Undo When completed it'll run from a friend's cloud (which I believe has a static IP), so connecting shouldn't be an issue.
I was thinking of a basic server-client TCP socket model.

6:34 PM
Recovered from error: [Errno 104] Connection reset by peer

Sam
Via which, I could then send all the needed data.
So, Yam sends Smokey Qs real-time (full data) -> Smokey requests all posts made by user -> Yam query's his log; send all found Qs -> Smokey checks the Qs; report any dupes ?

Sounds right

@hichris123 it seems like you really want me to think of an idea but you claim you don't :D

Recovered from ValueError: No JSON object could be decoded

@Undo ^^^ are you aware of this issue?

@AnnonomusPenguin :P Well, can you evaluate the feasibility of an idea? Have a spoken query converted to text & sent to Wolfram Alpha for an answer to the question.

@hichris123 what are the budget parameters that you have to work inside?

10:59 PM
@AnnonomusPenguin Basically none, but it comes out of my own pocket, so I'd prefer to stay on the low side. ;)

Ok. The onboard capabilities of the Arduino is quite limited so voice recognition is hard to do. I've seen shields that are $60+. I'm not sure if the Yun could do some more advanced stuff
Other than that, I think WA would have an api but not sure

@AnnonomusPenguin It does.

Again, voice recognition is a hard thing

@AnnonomusPenguin There's probably a Speech -> Text API too...
(not by WA, but by someone else...)

Possibly, but you'd have to record the audio and then send it over http. Have you googled this?
Also I'm not sure if your teacher would want you to, you know, do a little electronics :)

11:04 PM
Well, kinda. :P

So, no? :p

Well...
@AnnonomusPenguin It would include a display & microphone.

I think that writing a http library that converts ADC readings to a sound file would be extremely hard on the Arduino. That's the hardest part

$22
Not minimal when you add in the mic and preamp but not $721

11:13 PM
gah it comes as a kit.
Not allowed to do "kit projects".
:(

A LED isn't a kit project ;)
Just have a flashing LED haha

@AnnonomusPenguin The websocket is acting weird today, I think because of all the badness that has been happening to SE.

Would anyone object if I just hooked up a laser to an Arduino?

Hmm. Bad smokey.
@hichris123 your teacher?!?!?!?!
What do you want to do

@hichris123 Just make sure there's a shark involved

:(
@hichris123 Not what-if.xkcd.com/119?

lol hadn't seen that one.

@hichris123 project idea: you have a "when yahoo answers sucks" status light. It's constantly on so no Arduino required

Hrm yeah, I dunno now. I guess I can't do that idea...
@AnnonomusPenguin rofl

Build an electron detector
"The light is on, therefore the machine has detected at least one electron"

11:28 PM
...

It'd be enough to fool an English teacher, not sure about a CS one

Do you always have this good of ideas, @Undo? :p

Sometimes they're even better

Remember panic driven development? :)
I feel like @hichris123 is going to end up with something completely random, like an automated lemon zester
>:)

11:38 PM
Do you know how helpful you people have been today? ;P

Please leave feedback: eBay style.
To be perfectly honest you haven't been providing any feedback...

Well I mean.... show me a serious idea (other than the alarm thingy). ;)

No- that exactly. You know you don't like the alarm idea (no issues there), but you never explained why

Eh. I'm not sure my teacher would go for it -- how do you demonstrate it without someone sleeping & using it as their alarm?
Hrm, new idea time: something to do with a Nest...

How would you demonstrate that? :)

11:46 PM
Well, there is a web interface...

So do you have to show that it meets goals or just that it meets the technical expectations?
Like- would you have to prove the alarm clock effective or just that it beeps and lights up?

shrug
Ooh -- what about something that creates a time lapse?

I feel like you are trying to focus on the software side more than the hardware side here

True, but... I'd kinda like to use the Yun's internet capabilities.

Yea, but you're doing all stuff that could be done with an android app.
Are you, by any chance, into gardening?

11:54 PM
@hichris123 Staking a bit, but I did a pretty easy Arduino project called Stalker Guard (3rd chapter in that PDF). It was pretty cheap and took maybe an hour.

@AnnonomusPenguin Depends...
@michaelpri looks This is supposed to be a "final" project that takes 2 weeks, so it might not be complex enough, but lemme take a look.

@hichris123 There's other stuff in the book too that would probably qualify

Ooh interesting.
Thanks, @michaelpri!

I should ask what you enjoy that isn't computer related

@hichris123 The second project could probably pass for a final project

11:58 PM
@AnnonomusPenguin All sorts of stuff. :P
