/me turns on his server

still needs to setup Ubuntu via LiveUSB

@Seth Halp!

Q: Why are the 'xx packages can be updated' lines repeated twice?

UndoWhen I logged in to my Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit server this morning over SSH, I saw this at the end of the 'welcome' screen: Graph this data and manage this system at: https://landscape.canonical.com/ 18 packages can be updated. 5 updates are security updates. 18 packages can be updated. 5 upd...

Halp me @Seth!

thinks about silencing @hichris123 with his mod hammer so that he has Seth's undivided attention

12:05 AM
MOD ABUSE!!11!!!!11

@Undo Seriously, who cares ?

I do, @HamZa!
It's like eighty bytes getting transferred over my network that I don't need!

@Undo Have you tried to install those updates ?

well no
that might make the double-lining go away
and then I would be able to fix it

We need to teach it the DRY principle :P

12:08 AM
@hichris123 What's going on with you?

he borked something, I bet

@Undo It's probably just a glitch.
hang on though.

but it's annoying :(

A: Why are the 'xx packages can be updated' lines repeated twice?

JosThis is probably due to this bug. It will be gone if you upgrade to 14.04.

12:09 AM
@hichris123 that doesn't mean anything to me :-/

hmmmm

@Seth ... there should be an image there.

I can see that.

But... everything should work.
Am I doing something wrong?

I don't see how I'm supposed to know...
I wish I did.

12:11 AM
yesterday, by hichris123
@Seth You're good at random things, right?
:D

ah..

Unfortunately I have no idea what you're doing because PHP :(

@Undo Well it seems that bug did what I was going to tell you so..
Good answer :)

12:14 AM
yup :D

And very weird bug.

AU mods have such cute little tiny diamonds ;)

anyway, I had 73 packages to upgrade :O
@Undo You guys don't? Or is it because it's orange? :P

@Seth I have 100... :P Is it just sudo apt-get update?

12:15 AM
@hichris123 No. upgrade and dist-upgrade (usually the latter)

My diamond is bigger :D

update only updates the package list, upgrade actually updates some things, but dist-upgrade is sometimes needed because upgrade is timid.

Uhmm... I ran sudo apt-get update and logged out and back in and the number got bigger

@Undo Yep. You update the package list and it saw more.

oh

Q: What is the difference between apt-get update and upgrade?

Tom BritoWhat is the difference between apt-get update and apt-get upgrade? Which should I run first? Do any of them automatically run the other?

function download_attachment($item_id, $attachment) {
  $request = new Google_HttpRequest($attachment->getContentUrl(), 'GET', null, null);
  $httpRequest = Google_Client::$io->authenticatedRequest($request);
  if ($httpRequest->getResponseHttpCode() == 200) {
    return $httpRequest->getResponseBody();
  } else {
    // An error occurred.
    return null;
  }
}
^ See anything wrong with that? :(

what error does it give you if you run it with php?

... how do you add GET vars to php?

Don't need to. Just see what happens

if (!isset($_GET['timeline_item_id']) || !isset($_GET['attachment_id'])) {
  header("HTTP/1.0 400 Bad Request");
  exit;
}
@Undo ^

12:19 AM
dunno

Q: PHP passing $_GET in linux command prompt

PatrickSay we usually access via http://localhost/index.php?a=1&b=2&c=3 How do we execute the same in linux command prompt? php -e index.php But what about passing the $_GET variables? Maybe something like php -e index.php --a 1 --b 2 --c 3? Doubt that'll work. Thank you!

@Undo We get fat diamonds! :P

huh

Is that before <html>? @HiC

12:22 AM
I have no idea

@AnnonomusPerson No <html> in there.

Where's the code?

That's weird....
There's nothing with session....

Wait, outputs different thing now...

12:25 AM
Wild guess: add <!DOCTYPE html>
(Before any PHP code)

Add the doctype...
That should help... :/

> Fetched 71.5 MB in 10s (6,835 kB/s)
EC2 is amazing

@Undo So 35 mbps?
(Mbyte vs mbit)

I've seen it do 100 mbps to some servers.

12:28 AM
@AnnonomusPerson Trying it...

Whaoh! It must have some compression or do you have really fast internet?

@AnnonomusPerson This is EC2 :P
not my home internet

@AnnonomusPerson Nope.

> Fetched 26.3 MB in 2s (10.5 MB/s)

@Undo I thought you meant from home to those servers I see now.
@hichris123 Try adding <html></html> below any code....
And close the PHP, too :P
Final code @HiChris:
`<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<?php
// Verify that the parameters we want are there
if (!isset($_GET['timeline_item_id']) || !isset($_GET['attachment_id'])) {
header("HTTP/1.0 400 Bad Request");
exit;
}

require_once 'config.php';
require_once 'mirror-client.php';
require_once 'google-api-php-client/src/Google_Client.php';
require_once 'google-api-php-client/src/contrib/Google_MirrorService.php';
require_once 'base.php';

$client = get_google_api_client();

// Authenticate if we're not already
if (!isset($_GET['userid']) || get_credentials($_GET['userid']) == null) {

12:32 AM
fixed that for you ;)

thanks!
What was the problem?

No fixy @AnnonomusPerson. :(

@hichris123 Even with the closing ?> and the doctype?

Yeah.

Same errors?

12:34 AM
No errors really...

@hichris123 What about this error?

@AnnonomusPerson Nevermind about that one, I didn't do something right.

Oh.... been working on the wrong problem :D
What's the problem with the code then?

@AnnonomusPerson The image doesn't display.

Hmmm....

12:37 AM
^ Like that
@AnnonomusPerson Any ideas?

Not yet. I'm doing other stuff, too. I'll look at it in a little while a bit more.

Q: Is it a bad idea to not allow users to register with an easy to guess password?

Annonomus PersonWe all know them: password, password123, and letmein are all fairly common passwords and are easy to guess. Still, people use them. Would it be a bad idea to not allow users to use common passwords? I could display an error message with a list of "bad passwords that you cannot use." Should I all...

Working on password security.... :/ A pain :P
BTW @hic Move on to something else for now...

@AnnonomusPerson Homework. :(

12:53 AM
@hichris123 Yeah...

has already done all his homework

Me?: Cleaning
@Undo Have you studied?

Why would I do that?
:P

Homework and studying are two different things...

@Undo ... I feel all alone now. :P

12:54 AM
@Undo Because you don't want to fail a test? :P

It's only 8:54.

And get your computer taken away?
@hichris123 I go to bed fairly early...
@AnnonomusPerson Only four views?

@AnnonomusPerson Homeschooled, remember? :P

@AnnonomusPerson ... I don't. Probably should, though... :/

@AnnonomusPerson I know, right!
@hichris123 :D
@Undo Actually, no.
So no homework then.

12:55 AM
It's all homework

@Undo :D

Oh, @hichris123 AWS price cuts.

How long do you "school"?

@Undo Or is it all schoolwork? :P
@Undo Wow.

@AnnonomusPerson until I get tired and decide to work on Blaze or Wick or Radius or something

12:56 AM
I like how everybody is ignoring the fact that I'm having a conversation with myself... :D
@Undo But on average? Like 6hrs? 15?

Like per day? 3-4ish. I learn fast.

@Undo ... which is why I totally want to be you. :P

@Undo Uhh...
That's not fair...

If life were fair...

I'm in school from 7:25-3:20 :(

12:58 AM
Public schools have like 12hrs total with homework...
(At least mine did)

I've tasted public school. Not fun.
Actually it was some kind of 'gifted and talented' program, which I think meant they corral all the loudest most annoying kids into the same room.

@Undo Half of the time it wasn't even learning... 50+ minutes between classes
@Undo :D Those programs...

is annoyed at having to type https:// every time I want to see SR

@Undo You should see some of my Honors classes... :P

fun, right?

1:00 AM
Actually, yes... kinda.

How much work do you have to do @HiChris?

We go wildly off-topic sometimes. :P

(With HW)

@AnnonomusPerson Oh gosh... all of school & 2 hours homework maybe?

When I was in school I had research, math, then physics. I would do all the research homework in math and usually the math homework too. Then only have the physics homework to do at home :D

1:03 AM
And then there are classes like "Managing Money"... I know all of the content so far. Why can't we just test out?

I just realized you can get an EC2 instance with 49.15 TB of storage :P

Cool school idea: could like have a project due every two weeks where we try to incorporate math, science, and other subjects into a coding project and then that count as HW... get time in class.
@HiChris wouldn't that be cool?
@Undo Because 50TB is too much to ask for....
:P
(Actually, isn't it a flaw in base 2-10 conversion?)

Nevermind.

:P
Read
Maybe public education is a waste of time jk lol

@AnnonomusPerson Yeah, cool idea. Actually, GitHub isn't blocked by my school. :D

1:06 AM
@Undo BTW the diamond is Unicode, not ASCII
@hichris123 But really, bring a laptop... the only problem would be github :P
(Work together.... reuse code.... no homework!!!)

They build the schools here out of lead-infused bricks to inhibit WiFi and cell reception :P
2

@Undo SAFETY HAZARD!

@Undo We have an easy to access in school WiFi network, which you login via your network username/password. :D

@hichris123 IIRC it's like "guest" or something like that XD

@hichris123 You use a proxy, right?
because otherwise they're probably tracking everything you do.

1:10 AM
Or a VPN so it's encrypted

@Undo Nah, too much work. :P

Or HTTPs everywhere but there'll still be domains.

@AnnonomusPerson SSH tunneling is encrypted.

oh right... :P

@hichris123 I have to push only like three buttons to get SSH tunneling. Use it on any public wifi network..

1:11 AM
@Undo It depends really on what he's doing on public wifi.

no it doesn't.

@Undo Yeah, but you see we use in-school desktops/laptops.

@Undo on mobile devices?

@AnnonomusPerson yup :D
I've done it before, somehow.
@AnnonomusPerson Government being able to track what you do is creepy, even if you're just buying coffee tables on Amazon.
school == government

@Undo And that's not creepy itself for you, a 14 year old, to be buying coffee tables?!?!!??!?!?

1:13 AM
sigh EXAMPLES!

(I mean, if that's what floats your boat... it is still a little weird)
@Undo Says who? :P

:P
I'm going to get a sockpuppet to come in here and irritate you again :P

@Undo That'll be pointless... I know about it already...

not if I work hard to make it look legit
and do it when you aren't suspecting it

IPXref when a user's annoying me...

1:16 AM
grrr

oh, only 396 days left on my suspension!

@Undo I could change it back to full....

@AnnonomusPerson You can't make it go past like 415 days

;)
@Undo I can add 19 days for today...

1:18 AM
oh :(
I can't wait for someone to ask why I'm suspended on mSO.

@Undo Oh yeah you can't go on SO or on mSO right? ROTFL
Changes dates

@AnnonomusPerson If you change his parent site...

YAY!
I wish you could block access to settings....

Nevermind. It was auto-protected. :P

Why? It's protected....

1:32 AM
@AnnonomusPerson I don't :P

@Undo Well, I do :P

2:26 AM
... I officially declare @Doorknob smart. :D

2 hours later…

9 hours later…
The SO mods are probably going to ask me "Seth, why are you flagging everthing hichris123 is?"
Or in this case Undo.

1 hour later…
5:51 PM
@Seth hah

Man, the SO mods are on top of things recently.
Those extra 3 really helped.

yeah

6:05 PM
@Undo I suggest you include smokedetector as a submodule
I'll see if I can do it on a branch

What happen to ManishBot coming back online soon? Or did that whole project die?

No, the server is currently deleted and the new one has yet to be chosen

Ah.

sigh no SSH in my current wifi. Hard to git clone

6:33 PM
Doing it on a new branch: github.com/Charcoal-SE/Blaze/tree/subm . Will finish it up tomorrow, submodules are hard without ssh

1 hour later…
7:35 PM
@hichris123 cloud.google.com/developers/starterpack <-- $500 in Google Cloud stuff :D

New mods for code review!

oooh really?
we must give them their chat diamonds
oh, someone already did

7:59 PM
joins room
@Undo Cool!

hi!

Hiya! :D
> Cannot be used for cryptocurrency mining.
Wow, way to be nice Google. :P
> developers from affiliated partners
^ @Undo

whu?

You have to be a developer with one of their partners.

meh

8:03 PM
I assume that means some startup helping group they've partnered with.

they sent me an email with that link

@Undo Wait, do you have a promo code?

yeah

... wow.
$file = file(fopen(var_export($_POST["image"], true), "r"));
^ Where's the syntax error there? :P

@hichris123 start-in

8:05 PM
@Undo Don't you want it?

It's not personalized, I gaurantee you that.
I bet we can both use it.

True.

and you're more in the Googleosphere.

... that's true too. :P

so go for it ;)

8:08 PM
When I stop eating pizza and fixing this one bug, I will. :P
Okay, really, what am I doing wrong?
$filehandle = fopen($var, "r");
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in CODE on line 94 Errors parsing CODE

ENCAPSED? What's that?

I... dunno.

9:08 PM
@hichris123 the error lies somewhere else

@HamZa Yeah, I fixed that.

meh, changed my mind about that one

9:26 PM
@Undo You've not seen worse ?

A: Reference - What does this error mean in PHP?

10:06 PM
Someone stole my diamond

@Undo huh ?

Nevermind, it's back now

@Undo ... and who posted it? :P

well me :P

:D

1 hour later…
^ Nevermind on that one
But VTC the question.

/me is now out of flags again.
I should really try answering another javascript question

@Seth you're out of flags? Then go flag that! :P

;)

11:58 PM
