Holy crap! What's with all the views on the "Y shaped bit" question? It's by far the most popular question in the past couple days.
check the logs! your being hacked!!!!
@Tester101 It was on the SE hot questions page for a while (which is partly cause, partly effect)
@NiallC. We need more questions on that page! How do questions end up there?

Q: How are "Hot" Questions Selected?

Robert CartainoI know "Hot" questions are based on some sort of views/velocity criteria but does anyone know the actual algorithm used? I was considering a feature suggestion about the "Hot" tab, but I don't have enough information to speak intelligently about it.

So we just need to get lots of views and lots of votes
Ah, I see. So if we get lots of views and votes, we'll be able to get lots of views and votes.
15:27
@Tester101 yes.
Or since the number of answers factors into it, post a couple hundred of answers
So questions become popular, by being popular?

@lsiunsuex you're

Thanks, just waiting on SE to anon it now
I like how I delete my "use c4" joke comment and the first new comment is "use dynamite"

Q: Why is my A/C unit running when the heater runs?

Matt AdamsSo it finally got cold here in AZ. We switched our thermostat from A/C to Heat. Now for some reason when the electric heater runs, the A/C condenser unit outside kicks on too. This is our first winter here in the house. The vents do blow warm air, not hot, but warm. Where do I start looking? Is...

@TheEvilGreebo can you email that to Apple? thanks.
@Tester101 you can get hover text somehow (ask Random)
on oct 25 I wrote a detailed email explaining why it was going to be difficult to correctly import all the part numbers - in the old system they're in a single field with no standard delimiter. in the new system they're stored in individual records - so importing them is kind of like unmixing a cake batter
one of the most frustrating users I've ever known just FORWARDED ME MY OWN EMAIL, and said, "IN CPCT, there are parts # entered with a semi-colon, comma, or line by line. Is it possible to import them to CPC and allow a search on Part#?"
My reply:
<User>

That is a question I’ve already discussed quite extensively in this email chain. Have you read it?

excuse me if i'm confused (we're from the island, not the main land) theatlantic.com/infocus/2012/11/venice-under-water/100403 where does the waste water go in the city? does it not flow into the sea? are these people not wadding in possibly contaminated water?

Q: Allow me to marry text to a onebox in chat

Robert HarveyCurrently, oneboxing requires that the URL be the only thing in a chat message. If additional text is added with the url in the same chat message, oneboxing won't work. If other people are chatting, they can break in and divorce the onebox from the descriptive text: Please fix chat in some w...

A: How can I locate and repair a leak?

tim QuinnI once had a similar situation where an upstairs toilet had an un-noticed pinhole leak in the supply line that runs from the valve on the wall to the bottom of the fill valve. The leak wasn't discovered until the wall down stairs had been ripped up searching for the source of the water. A tiny le...

Can you offer any advice to the OP as to how to find and repair the leak? — Tester101 53 secs ago
"Or did you just feel like telling a story?"
"And this one time, in band camp...."
They should but sample text in all text areas, as it seems people feel text areas can never be left blank.
he did offer advice
Nobody uses search, because the box already has stuff in it.
17:48
"These supply lines can get very fragile over time and any disturbance can cause small holes or cracks."
@lsiunsuex Not an answer. Should be comment.
@lsiunsuex yes, those stupid people are "swimming" in water that is really not clean for swimming
@Aaron so its like the kids that play in the streets here after a heavy storm and flooding - the water is on the street cause the sewers are backed up, you morons
Well, not all localities have combined sewer and storm drain systems
ahh - never knew they were / could be separate
17:53
@Aaron Yeah, but I don't know anywhere that has raised sewer lines.
Overhead sewer lines would be great, until they leaked.
A storm drain, storm sewer (US), stormwater drain (Australia and New Zealand) or drainage well system (UK) or simply a drain or drain system is designed to drain excess rain and ground water from paved streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and roofs. Storm drains vary in design from small residential dry wells to large municipal systems. They are fed by street gutters on most motorways, freeways and other busy roads, as well as towns in areas which experience heavy rainfall, flooding and coastal towns which experience regular storms. Many storm drainage systems are designed to drain the st...
@Aaron In my area we have a storm drain system that is separate from the sanitary sewer system, but they are both underground and both have cleanouts along their length. If there is enough water to flood, the poop will likely be bubbling up too.
doesn't Gotham have raised sewer lines that run along the raised train tracks? Or is that just for water
@lsiunsuex There is nothing in the pipes attached to the train tracks, they are just background scenery.
18:10
Oh, sorry. I forgot to say Spoiler Alert:
18:26
Usually that sort of stuff is going to be gas lines
speaking of gas lines:
I totally thought "meth lab" first time I saw that story
Reminds me of Cleveland's house.
19:01
@Tester101 would you be interested in this question?
@Kortuk My knee jerk reaction was no until I saw someone explain what the heck he meant by "grounding triad." If it's rephrased to say "why are three grounding rods recommended for your home" it would be on-topic here.
@Kortuk I agree. It's not clear if they are talking about grounding systems in a residential electrical system, or an electronic circuit.
That's the best triad there is
@Tester101 It is not for an electronics circuit, it is for a building :)
@Kortuk Then I guess it would fit better here, but I'm still not convinced it's a good question in the first place. It's unclear what they want to know.
19:14
@Tester101 that is sorta their opinion.

Q: Of what variety is the carpet used in corridors of Galaxy class starships?

TrevorThe Federation starships in the period of Star Trek: The Next Generation have carpeting covering most of the flooring, unlike the more basic duranium-plated sheeting used in 23rd century starships. I have always wondered what variety of carpet is available which can stand up to so much foot traff...

Q: Most neutral finish for a dining table?

DA01I've had to repair a split in our dining table and, as part of that, decided to sand it all down to refinish. I'm not entirely sure of the species. It's a hardwood, and I'm guessing tropical. It has a slight pinkish hue to it. It was originally stained dark and, while it looked nice, we actuall...

in case anybody was falling behind
@Aaron news reports this morning were clearer than yesterday morning :(. It's a tangled web for sure
Is the CIA director actually allowed to be a civilian?
19:52
@Aaron The CIA is not a military organization.
It does not fall under the Joint Chiefs
@Aaron yes. He retired from the military before he took the job. He is a civ
ah ok, so it's just "General" for life, ilke "Ambassador" for life
@Aaron yes
pretty sure he wore a suit to the office, not his military dress.
Haha "military dress".
Military dress refers to dress uniform - it's not a girly term
@Aaron its not mandatory but it's a common courtesy
19:55
Military dress
any high ranking military (enlisted or officer) is generally called by their last rank - they retired so they're technically still entitled to it (unless discharged dishonorably)
We do the same thing with Presidents
and apparently governors....
technically someone could still call me Petty Officer
but PO is pretty common - where "Chief" (aka Chief Petty Officer) requires congressional approval
so what's this hullabloo anyway?
never mind, don't tell me, i don't really wanna know :)
19:58
@TheEvilGreebo Don't ask, don't tell.
20:16
can i go home now?
@TheEvilGreebo Yes you may.

@aarthi Yes, please!

20:27
@Aarthi I notice you guys didn't ask any questions about pumps, generators, or other disaster related things. Does that mean you got the water pumped out of SE successfully?
@Tester101 I think so? my carpet isn't squishy anyway :)
@Aarthi You guys aren't peddling stationary bikes to keep the computers running, are you?
negative! though my trainer would be hella happy if I were :P
Oops, just gave google a way to reduce their carbon footprint even more. Sorry, google employees.
hahaha
sucks to be them! :P

I was a Master Corporal. So I'd like you all to call me Master from now on.
@ChrisCudmore Ok corp
@MasterChrisCudmore Did you tell the system, so we can ping you?
