Lost power Monday morning. Got it back Wednesday night. Great timing Sandy, right in the middle of the renovation. Fortunately we were able to keep going using our generator but man Sandy slowed us down..

Q: Gas line for fireplace cannot be found

Trina MorenoWe just purchased a home with a beautiful fireplace. Looking on the inside of the fireplace you can see the gas line but looking on the outside, we can't find the starter or place where a key is supposed to go? My handy husband even poked a hole in the wall where it looks like something had been ...

@Tester101 pointing there it is
Too localized, off topic?
@BMitch Hey, thanks for your help with the drippy valve question
but I figured out what it was pretty easily
what was it?
Defective expansion tank
I took the knob off the bottom and water gushed out
less than 3 months old
11:04
@Tester101 maybe not a real question, kinda hard to understand what their asking, but I'd start with some comments asking for more details
@maple_shaft at least it's an easy fix if yours just screws in
@BMitch They want us to go to their house, and help them figure out how to turn the fireplace on.
@Tester101 that's why I solve these problems over the internet by pointing
@BMitch It is a screw on, but they are pretty hard to take off
I wonder if I did something to damage it while installing?
did you pressurize it while the water was shutoff and with an open faucet?
@BMitch Ummm... yeah
i did
was that bad?
11:07
ok, that's good, otherwise your pressure would have been way low and I can see that rupturing the bladder
Personally, I like to err 1-2 psi over my baseline psi. I figure it will be back at equilibrium when the water heater does it's thing
It is just strange... I would open the faucet at cold inlet and then close it, get a reading on the gauge of 30-32 psi.
It's also possible that you undersized the expansion tank
The water heater caused that to climb sometimes up to 90 psi
but must likely explanation is that you just got a bad tank
Instructions said pressurize to 2 psi below cold inlet pressure from city or pump
11:10
@maple_shaft when that happens, that expansion tank isn't doing a thing
@BMitch It worked fine like that for over a month]
90psi isn't fine
no no that was before I installed the new tank
I never got 90 psi after installing the new expansion tank
ok, I was about to say, imagine your car tires with 90psi :)
it just worked fine for a month then the valve started leaking again telling me that pressure was back
@BMitch Rubber bombs

Q: Are there any quick seting Floor Levelling Compounds?

WalkerThe self leveling compound under the vinyl floor tiles in our bathroom has started to break up so the tiles are now coming up. We do not have another toilet so I need a solution that can be walked on quickly. Ideals…. We are in the UK, and I am looking for something I can buy from a DIY shop ...

Too localized, off topic (shop for me)?
@Tester101 Yes
that was easy
@BMitch So you would have set the tank to 34-36 psi instead?
@Tester101 I'm just ignoring it for now since he got an answer
@maple_shaft if the instructions didn't tell me otherwise, I would, but yours were pretty explicit
I'm just shooting from the hip here, install one expansion tank and suddenly I think I know what I'm doing :)
@BMitch We are DIY'ers, if we weren't overly confident about things we have little knowledge and experience in then we would be too terrified to get anything done :)
@maple_shaft Yeah, but when it comes to framing, drywall, trim, painting, insulation, and various other tasks, I've got lots of experience from Habitat projects. When it comes to the trades (electric, water, gas, hvac), I've only got personal experience.
@BMitch I would like to know how one gets involved with HforH... it is always something I was interested in doing, and I will need so much community service anyway to apply for this grad program I have been considering
11:27
@maple_shaft I just showed up, they often take walk-ons. Find your local chapter and give them a call, see where and when they're building and if they are allowing walk-ons.
For us, we often limit walk-ons because we get corporate donors that overload us with company team-building events.
11:46
@BMitch Is there some burden of proof on you to prove your capabilities? I have minor framing and drywall experience, but I am pretty good at roofing, soffit+fascia, siding, hanging doors, trim and painting
@maple_shaft no experience or tools required, they take everyone and teach them what they need to know
@BMitch Would habitat let me play with wires?
@Tester101 if you're licensed, they'll let you donate your services, but otherwise we contract all that out
@BMitch Where does the org get money for materials and such?
if you had leftover materials from a remodel or construction project, can you dontate it?
Damn, nobody ever lets me play with the wires :(
@maple_shaft Habitat Restore takes donations, sells anything we can't use with the money going back to the program
@Tester101 I picture this as you
got electrocuted one too many times
@maple_shaft What are you trying to say?
@BMitch Ok... I have like 3 unopened cans of white primer and several unopened bag of concrete mix
@maple_shaft They're a non-profit and get funding from donations, many from local companies that then send loads of volunteers for company team-building events. Homeowners also have a mortgage for about 1/3 the cost of the home, at 0%, that gets paid to Habitat to fund future projects
11:57
@BMitch And what do these people do to deserve such generosity? Just be poor?
low income but enough to afford the mortgage, in sub-standard housing today (often overcrowing situations), I think they are in the county's low income housing definition/program, able to donate sweat equity, and then there's a lottery for anyone that passes those criteria
In the old days, most houses were done sort of like this. The community would come together and build a house for a new family, as long as they provided the materials
The amish still do that
We still do it today, but it's called camping :)
uh oh, fire alarm, brb
@BMitch Are you going to fight the fire, or evacuate because of a fire?
I dismissed the flag, but there's now a blue swarm in the Ask Ubuntu chat room
12:06
@BMitch I guess I'm not special enough, I didn't get notified.
maybe because I never attend the super secret meetings.
and I forgot the super secret handshake.
I think every 10k gets notified in addition to every blue, but maybe they don't sent it all out at once
That way someone like me can clean it up before making a mess of the chat room :)
I think something is wrong with the blog.
What's wrong? Link works for me.
It must not be getting updated when people write their articles. I haven't seen a new one it a bit.
A couple drafts, but nothing ready for review... Odd.
@joshmax Has one that just needs an image of the finished project.
13:02
And one last one from me:
??? Did they tie down the house for the hurricane?
@BMitch Yeah, but it seems they forgot to tie down the truck.
Strange they would think the house would blow away before the truck.

5 hours later…
18:05
So who caught the special haloween edition of that annoying ATT commercial?
wow, not just closed, buty removed?
@Aaron I don't think you can close your own questions, you have to delete them.
It was deleted by owner
ah
I think @BMitch was too mean for the OP.
oops
so much for mister nice mod
Either that, or they found out it wasn't a gas fireplace, and felt embarrassed.
18:11
or maybe they saw what I was pointing at
link not viewable for under 10k
It's the person that was trying to find their gas shutoff/starter
They flipped a switch trying to turn on a light and suddenly the lights dimmed, the fireplace sprang to life, and Barry White began to sing softly from the distance.
@Tester101 This is the room I'm interested in building. I need a full guide, thanks.
Oh, except I don't want a switch. I want a clapper.
@MatthewPK You need to talk to this guy...
@MatthewPK What is the floor made of, bricks are heavy.
18:27
@Tester101 The subfloor is 2 inches thick and this wall is on the footing. I only want to bring the brick up 2 feet, not the entire wall.
@MatthewPK So you're on a concrete pad?
@Tester101 No, I have a crawlspace. But the wall I want to add brick to is an outside wall atop the footing.
The subfloor is 2x8 T&G planks with ply glued and fastened atop it, spanning them.
So floor is joists sitting on foundation, with 2" subfloor?
Do you have a specific reason you don't want to do veneer?
18:31
Sorry for lacking clarity
It will abut existing real brick.
I could do something like those "half-brick" systems like tru-brick
but I don't think it's needed here.
Sorry that's what I call "brick veneer". The other crap is faux brick veneer, made from plastic or whatever.
But I could just as easily use real brick
Real brick is heavy.
How long (wide?) is the wall?
3 ft and 14 ft
Which some back-of-an-envelope calculations tell me will take about one ton of bricks
(6 lbs per brick)
:(
That's a lot of weight.
18:41
yeah
I see what you're getting at
with that brick veneer how do I cut holes for receptacles?
seems that the steel track would be in the way
also: do you recommend any brick veneers?
there is no tru-brix dealer near me
Or can I simply cut down brick and glue it to the substrate?
Brick is heavy, I think that's why they use the track.
You'd have to cut a hole in the track for the receptacle, use a box extender to make up the thickness change, then trim the bricks around the box.
18:57
Ok, in case anyone is waiting for the start, lets kicks this off...
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
This week's topics include: hurricane damage, brick walls, halloween candy, and exploded batteries in flashlights.
As for me, I only found one minor leak to fix from the hurricane, and a few electronics with dead/exploded batteries
Don't all chime in at once, it's hard to follow when you're all so talkative.
Welcome @Pschultz, in case you didn't notice, we're waiting for you to tells us what you've been working on lately. We'll just sit here and stare at your gravatar until you do. (Just kidding... well, mostly kidding.)
Ooh. I forgot it was Thursday. Thanks you, PUT. For reminding me another week is almost gone.
These hurricanes really throw off my schedule, I thought Tuesday was Sunday
ok, time to go all Enron on some old bank statements. I'll give you guys a topic while I shred: what's the appropriate daddy tax rate on Halloween candy?
@BMitch 5%, unless you walked around with them, then it's closer to 10%.
14'x2' wall = 180 bricks @ 6 lbs/brick = 1080 lbs.
+ the weight of mortar.
That's 1/2" mortar joints.
Standard 8" x 2 1/4" brick.
19:25
19:39
how come there's no PUT notification on the website?
19:51
@Steven huh, maybe that's why no one is here
I guess it's as good a time as any to schedule the winter edition of PUT, anyone mind me cutting it down to one hour?
I don't have a whole lot this week
although I am finding new uses for the rotary tool and the multi tool all the time
making cuts in 2x4s, e.g., instead of dragging out the miter saw for a cut, just marking it with a pen and using the oscillating multi tool
20:08
BMitch has added an event to this room's schedule.
I've only scheduled future PUT's for one hour since that's about as long as we seem to last.
@BMitch I'll bet your wife says otherwise.
20:25
Here's a picture of someone that got it up, but wasn't able to get it back down: autoblog.com/2012/11/01/…
[some-genius] forgot to flatten out the top.
why did they even bother driving over?
Just walk over at that point
I'm guessing there was a big dessert after the fence
I have to laugh at the auto-ads on the page advertising that vehicle. If it won't make it over the damn fence, I'm not buying it!
20:57
alright, since we started early, and the chat died really early, and we didn't have the event scheduled, I'm going to call this PUT a bit early
Thanks for joining this week's PUT

I don't think anyone does anything interesting at this time of year.
