Our house has two A/C systems; one for the bedroom level, one for the remainder of the house. The compressor/consdensor units are outside the south side of the house, and in direct sun all day, now that a nearby tree has been removed. Would shading the units, perhaps with a small fence, improve...

My AC's outdoor unit is on roof facing direct sunlight. I'm from India where temperature right now is 47 degree celsius during the day.

Basically my AC is not giving performance like it gave few weeks ago.

Even if I set my AC to 16 degree celsius, room temperature reaches till 22 degree during the day. Can't go down that.

The technician said it is maybe because of hot summer. But he didn't give answer about my outdoor unit being in the sun whole day. I think he doesn't know about this science.

Technicians couldn't find any other issue with my AC. So do you think outdoor unit in 47 degree celsius could be a culprit?

And I should get the outdoor unit under some shade so it's not directly facing sun?

I read many articles which somehow say outdoor unit in direct sunlight reduce performance. So I would like to try to get a shade for it.

If the answer you're looking for is not in there, what makes it different?

AC is used in hot climates, the physics should be the same in that sense

I use LG ac so guess it's same everywhere as it's a foregin brand

keep in mind btw that 47C air temperature is really hot, your AC will simply have reduced performance due to the huge temperature difference - shading will definitely help as it takes away direct sunlight, but it probably won't make a massive dent in the increase in energy consumption

@Vikas split unit I assume, the basic physics will be the same for all of these

Also that answer looks like answer my query like you said, but I probably need some confirmation about type of AC being discussed. Split AC concepts are same everywhere? I mean condensor/compressor is always in outdoor unit ?

Yeah. But when I bought it last year, I never set temperature below 24 degree. It was comfortable to me. I just started experimenting below 24 now only. And I found it is struggling.

Of course my room roof is also facing direct sunlight. That could be another culprit.

I will discuss it again with my technicians.

in short: 47C is bad, roof heating up doesn't help

shading the exterior unit will help a bit, shading the roof would help as well

this is an extreme condition, getting room temperature to below 24 is simply very expensive right now

I will get a shade most likely, after discussing again with my technicians. Because it doesn't look safe to me personally, outdoor unit in this much hot summer. At least it will save some electricity.
