Wow... Chevy charges extra for door handles!
gatta recoup from the bailout somehow
I'll save the $112 bucks, and just go through the window like the Duke boys
+2/4 mpg cause of a manual trans? they call that eco?
16:16
You're sure that's not an upgrade to chrome handles or somthing?
@ChrisCudmore I'm sure it is, but how much more work would it have been to list it as "Chrome Door Handles"?
or "Door Handle Upgrade"
Just did a build on GM Canada, no option for door handles.
Damn Canadians, get everything for free!
@ChrisCudmore canadians just break the windows with their shotguns and climb in, no need for handles..
16:21
sorry, i just don't find today's american cars appealing anymore. i was a huge dodge fan - had 2 dodge stratus's (first 4 door, then the coupe) but the last few cars have been foreign - has a Nissan Murano and now a Toyota Prius
And it's 3000 cheaper here. Might be worth a trip to the fort erie dealer.
But, you'll have to pay the 13% sales tax.
@lsiunsuex my next car will almost certainly be a foreign car. It's not so much the car as the price for me though
I'm driving a Mitsubishi Outlander. My wife has a Mini. The Mini is a fun drive.
I'm also finding it harder to get a manual transmission now.
@ChrisCudmore And the exchange rate.
mini's are cool - their just way to small. not that the prius is big, but it'll hold 10 50lb bags of concrete just fine :)
miss the murano - should have kept it
16:27
Exchange rate is trivial right now. It's the bank fees that kill you.
Foreign cars are great, but their trucks suck.
A dealer in a border town would probably take yankee-bucks.
exchange rate is almost on par no?
My wife won't let me get anything dirty in the Mini. So it's ability to carry loads is not a factor.
i remember when it was $1 USD to like 1.60 CAD - woot! went to canada all the time back then
16:29
Pretty much. But they'll charge you for percent for the ability to exchange equal valued currencies.
Coffee Run!
@ChrisCudmore bonus points if you actually ran at any point
Nah. Speed Kills.
Where do people get these ideas? And who is telling them all this stuff?

Q: What packing material to use between a brick and house beam?

JohannesI'm replacing a damaged beam under my house with bricks under each floor joist. The bricks are 15mm lower than the original beam. I've been told to use roof slates to pack the rest of the height. I'm slightly skeptical due to slates being brittle. Could I use synthetic slates instead? I've read...

Is he building brick pillars? Or is it just above the foundation walls?
And not that I'm complaining, but why do they trust random people on the internet over who ever it is they've talked to about it?
16:43
@ChrisCudmore I think I know what he's talking about, I have some of these under my house
basically just a stack of bricks/blocks with some shims driven in for a tight fit
Read the comments. He has no basement.
Which means if it collapses, he's not falling too far.
@waxeagle Bricks,
or cinder blocks?
@Tester101 pretty sure mine are cinder blocks, I should really go look again
For completeness:
Hmm... Wonder how much weight Legos could support?
16:47
@Tester101 I have a feeling that compression isn't a strength for them
And can Legos support more than the cheap knockoffs?
sounds like a question for LEGO® Answers
There is a whole site for Lego?!
@Tester101 yep
"How do I connect Part F to Part C?"
16:49
oh wow, no crawlspace access...yikes
They should be fine in compression. It's buckling that I'd worry about.
Tensile strength is 5000 PSI. Assume the same for compression.
Which is 34 MPa, about 1/10 that of steel.
@ChrisCudmore how's that compare to...actual brick?
17:05
Lot of variation in brick. 20-40 MPa for typical household bricks.
But the lego will do really poorly in shear.
So any eccentric loading, and the whole post will buckle out from under you.
pack the lego bricks with high strength concrete?
And to be fair, I don't know if that 34 MPa is yield or ultimate.
And also:
sorry, wrong image
There's a lot of void in a brick. Not many square inches to support the PSI
You'd need to use the bottom of the brick to calculate the area, not the top.
Now, if you were to melt them down, and recast it as a solid pillar, it might be strong enough.
What is wrong with these people???
Although, keeping it on topic, it is a valid comment if you DIY.
@ChrisCudmore You need some type of transition there, if you're going to switch topics like that.
I was trying to figure out the link between Lego and AIDS.
17:22
Yeah. Sorry about that.
maybe someone with aids cut themselves while playing with lego's, in the presence of the opposite sex and they found that aids could not be contracted that way?
Somewhere under all this crap I'm reading is a visual studio window that needs attention.
17:37
somewhere i need to convert all my get's to post's
@ChrisCudmore lol, I usually keep mine up on my second monitor...doesn't mean I get any work done, just that it's up
I browse and code in the 16:9, and keep specs and docs up on the 4:3
@ChrisCudmore You use a 4:3 ?
@ChrisCudmore I'm going 16:9/9:16, browse and do DB and test work in 16:9 keep my code in 9:16 and my email, cuz I keep missing stuff when it's covered up because our email sucks monkey balls
It's the same height as the 16:9, and the total width is managable.
@waxeagle Our chief editor (That's for dead tree content) has that setup. It allows her to see whole pages at once
17:42
@ChrisCudmore yeah, I've got an odd T shaped setup
still meaning to score a 27 inch thunderbolt display... someday soon.
@ChrisCudmore yeah, I can get 101 LOC in with visual studio 2008 with most of the toolbars put away.
email sucks monkey balls no matter how you look at it.
but my new laptop bag came in the mail last night!!!
I usually keep it a bit shorter so my email is up top
17:43
The problem is, all other methods of communication suck even worse.
@ChrisCudmore yes, but groupwise email is a special breed of suck
We were using netscape mail for a long time. It took two years of arguing to switch to outlook.
this took far too long to prepare... but this is manageable ;)
@ChrisCudmore we're in the process of going to outlook/exchange but we're not there yet
@TheEvilGreebo With those napkins and toothpicks it looks like you do a lot of eating.
17:46
I generally take lunch at my desk
What's the warning label on your keyboard.
@ChrisCudmore looks like the standard HP RSI warning
scuse me that's and HP keyboard
we have probably 1000 of those keyboards
I know because I've got the same exact one sitting in front of me
17:49
their nice, but all ps2
read safety and comfort guide blah blah blah
i generally have VS on the right and SQL or Email on the left
or my browser
so... goto a stag for a douchebag i know but don't particularly like but all my friends are going or no? $30 / ticket
what's the venue?
@lsiunsuex wouldn't but $30 can be a lot to me
local bar type thing
17:55
sounds pretty ordinary, nothing special, not worth $30
I generally hate stags.
not a fan of them myself unless their in canada - weather is supposed to be nice though / summer almost over
but, with vacation in a week, thats $30 on a few drinks in vegas
getting a riding mower. reportedly drains the battery and "jumps" but the price is right
Hello all! Long time no see! :D
grrr memegenerator crapped on me
@ChrisCudmore was gonna post a pic of a stag saying, Yeah well **** you too buddy!
18:00
@joshmax good $time_of_day to you ser
Oh well suppose I'll go back to debugging this crappy search page
@waxeagle haha, I guess we all know what language you've been programming in lately :P
@joshmax actually nope, just vb.net I've actually never used PHP :) (that's php syntax right?)
meh.
DateTime.Now.ToString(new System.Globalization.CultureInfo(Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture.Name));
That's how you do it.
18:04
@ChrisCudmore ha
@ChrisCudmore date.now works well :P
echo date("m-d-Y @ h:i a", mktime());
pretty much...
I sure didn't mean to turn DIY-chat into Programming-chat...
i like to through an @ in there - i think its trendy
isn't $time_of_day used to return morning/evening/afternoon etc ?
18:05
@joshmax lol it happens.
It's stackexchange. Is there a single user that didn't come in through Stackoverflow?
@ChrisCudmore maybe 1?
Which site sucked you into this morass of time wasting?
@ChrisCudmore mostly RPG, but i joined SO back towards the beginning and participated for a while
think SO got me into SE which led to SF and then DIY
Stack Exchange: more abbreviations than IBM
"Excuse me sir. Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep the PC on the QT, because if it leaks to the VC, you could end up an MIA, and then we'd all be put on KP."
@ChrisCudmore GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING CHRIS CUDMORE!!!!!!!
@waxeagle How's modding on Christianity? Does it get out of hand?
@ChrisCudmore SO -> GD -> WP -> DIY -> Mech -> Bikes -> Christianity -> 51 -> ... a bunch of others...
@ChrisCudmore it's mostly good, but yeah we have our days
18:11
Topic derail. I love ReSharper. That is all.
@lsiunsuex meant to do this earlier: +1 :)
@lsiunsuex you underestimate IBM
we're an IBM shop - i know well of their insanity :)
I'm a contractor for the Tivoli line, I can't even keep up
we have a couple iseries - the new one came in its own rack - give it power and network - bit of config and dump the program on it.
i don't do much with it - the other admin maintains it, but i'd consider one for apache / php if i ever run my own servers for my startup. i think the hardware is solid. better than the dell shit we run for the windows side
18:19
IBM has some great software, at least before they acquire it. Post acquisition, most of the software goes downhill during the bluewashing.
But there's good money to be made in companies that buy in the IBM koolaid
Personally, I'm trying to get away from it, but writing a large project from scratch, by yourself, takes longer than you ever plan
don't have to tell me; going though it now
we went live just less than 2 weeks ago with a startup - a friend and i
ould be working again
I think I started more in SF than SO
oops! wrong window :)
@lsiunsuex good luck, far too few people doing that these days
18:24
people are so quick to jump on kickstarter or score some VC than to work their ass off trying to do something on their own. don't get me wrong, we've spent "some" money but only on what we need. otherwise, i'm the programmer, hes the idea man
thanks though - one thing to say your gonna do something. whole different world to actually see it through
So, is most everyone in here a programmer of some sort or sysadmin??
sysadmin / programmer by day, freelance php at night / entrepreneur on the weekends
programmer, contractor, integrator, systems monitoring tools, I wear a few hats
@joshmax web dev...pretty much just a code monkey at this point
oh yeah, and i like remodeling my money pit
18:28
@lsiunsuex Not everyone goes the funding route, here's a good piece about it:
I do more networking than system administration
Developer/designer turned project manager (under protest)
Ah, just curious.
I'm designer (1/3), front-end dev (1/3), network-tech (1/6), sane (1/6)
@TheEvilGreebo heh
& freelance designer/Comm grad student by night
@BMitch those are good points that i've heard. i've just gotten frustrated seeing projects on kickstarter - 2mil here, 5mil there, etc... or the people that get VC - Colour - 100mil for a iphone app? and i'm sitting here, working a day job, up till midnight working on my startup. trying to justify spending X on something that'll make life life easier.
BUT, conversly - we're live now - and we're getting people signed up on the site already (40 in the last 2 weeks) (we're very niche) so its happening. and when we bring in money, i'll be happy i owe shit to anyone.
when we went live - i sent an email campaign to a small group - 30 people - and 40 registered - so their spreading the word. i have another list of national people we're targeting. this list has 700 emails. we're gonna blast that once i work through a few more bugs. if the effect is anything similar to the initial list of 30 i blasted, it should be a very merry christmas
@lsiunsuex That's a bloody effective email.
I thought most "spam" had effectiveness of 1E-5 or worse.
18:39
thanks. i hope the next one is the same haha. campaignmonitor.com - f'ing awesome. see who opened it, if it got forwarded,
How did you generate the list?
@lsiunsuex what's the site/biz, if you don't mind?
the 30 we initially blasted were people already attending seminars hosted by my partner
we're a 2ndary education website for dental students
the list of 700, we bought from.... someone :) perfectly legit, but i'd rather not say who we bought the list from
Hey, its project update thursday
Not yet... 20 minutes.
18:40
<-- did some DIY stuff this weekend
@ChrisCudmore STOP OPPRESSING ME!
so, we're very niche, but dental vendors (companies that make implants, tools, etc...) have very, very, deep pockets
But because of the niche market, you can charge a lot, right?
thats right
The website lied. :(
think of pharm drugs. would a drug salesman like to be infront of an established doctor who see's 20 pharm reps a day? or be in front of a student, influence them, and then the student becomes a pro, they go back to the pharm rep exclusively
18:43
We're charging $200 bucks for a 4 week prep course for Echocardiography that is nothing more than (A truly excellent) set of exam questions.
thats our pitch to the vendors. become friends with the students, have a client when their pro
So the medical market is productive territory.
medical, dental. lots of money there
But working with doctors is a pain in the keister.
dentists are nicer :)
plus, i never pay for dental work now haha
smoke. bbl
18:45
We had 7 doctors writing the questions. Each had a different idea as to how the others should have written their questions.
I pay 25 bucks a year for dental. Work insurance covers the rest.
Good plan.
But we tend to get better dental plans in Canada, because they don't need to pay for medical in the plan -- Just the extras like private rooms, drugs and equipment like crutches slings.
I better go pee before PUT
5mins of no chat after @ChrisCudmore mentioned peeing... coincidence? I think not... :)
my day job insurance is great, but we still have a copay - the dentists waive that for me which helps even more
@joshmax It's the power of suggestion.
@lsiunsuex I do something similar with a restaurant and rentable-cabin that I did websites for -> lowered prices from me = free food/board :)
I didn't see that. now I have to pee
18:55
@waxeagle Better hurry... 5 mins!
@joshmax yeah, I'm gonna hold it, there's a mod chat cast right now and the backscroll from those is usually too much to catch up on
for the longest time i was terrified of dentists / doctors. bad experience as a child. my teeth were so bad i needed a full scaling - 3 separate teeth cleaning procedures. dentists covered it for me. something $1200 worth of work
they've been good to me to say the least.
I'm going to kick this off early so I can pay attention to the modcast
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Yay! Where's the beer?
So i finally did some DIY stuff this weekend.
Some yardwork - we bought an edger and I edged the sidewalks - but gonna have to make another pass at them
and I replaced the wax ring for our upstairs toilet and stopped it from raining pee water in the kitchen
we also planned out our future new kitchen layout, but that'll have to keep a bit - redoing the bath is next and will start soon
Did you hit any wood posts with the edger?
18:59
no but i got sparks off the sidewalk a few times
I managed to get the basement painted.
Laying the laminate tomorrow.
Those flock corner edgers are awesome! I'm never going back to brushes again.
flock corner edger?
Looking for an image.
Something like that.
nice
looks nice and thick
hope to make an attempt to finish this, this weekend.
19:06
About 30 seconds per corner.
wire the lights, drywall the closet, sand, prime, paint - trim can wait - before her sister arrives labor day weekend
Tape over those outlets!
why? mud chips off of plastic just fine using your finger nail / flat screw driver :)
Nah, painted over outlets is classy
oh yeah, before i paint for sure, tape the outlets, but not to mud
19:08
Amateur Tip: Don't paint the ceiling a different colour. It's just a pain.
latex sherwin williams paint is actually very forgiving on plastic leviton outlets as long as you wipe it up quickly - plus who rolls around the outlets? i brush around the outlets 4 inches, then feather in with the roller
I had the good fortune of only having a coil of wire in each opening. I just rolled right over.
It was quick and easy.
@ChrisCudmore dad and i like to put the outlets in before drywall to make sure the electrical is right. would really suck to drywall just to find out you f'ed up the electrical somehow haha
@lsiunsuex this pic looks an awful lot like mine....
looks good josh
19:13
Completely different. @lsiunsuex put in his drywall horizontally. @joshmax did it vertically. Not similar at all.
to late now but staggering the joints is key
makes it stronger / joint lines show less when painted as the eye doesn't have a single line to focus on
but a good job none the less
@TheEvilGreebo this makes me shutter.....
@lsiunsuex Looks like his went floor to ceiling - no need to stagger
@TheEvilGreebo Painted over outlets is only doing the job halfway. Do it right. Paint over the faceplate too.
@ChrisCudmore Winner winner chicken dinner!
19:17
@lsiunsuex with a 10' ceiling in there, one sheet floor-to-ceiling doesn't look half bad.
I think this was with just one coat of paint - I can still see the outlines a bit, here. Now, they're almost completely gone.
@joshmax Smooth
eh, didn't mean to imply you did a bad job by any means
@lsiunsuex didn't take it that way, no worries :)
the ceiling in that room is 7f 6in high? we would have had waste eitherway...
gotcha
That wall is actually this one...
4
A: How do I drywall over a partial cement wall?

joshmaxWell, it rained pretty heavily the entire week while I was working, so I waited a day or two before drywalling to see if I could find a leak. I believe whatever was causing the problem was fixed. I think the mold there was from back when that window used to be a doorway. Here's my fix: The wall...

19:20
and god knows not a single stud in the house is 16in on center.
i remember that post
came out nice
you leaving it white or are you gonna add some color?
@lsiunsuex I know how you feel....
@lsiunsuex It's going to be a studio/office for my wife & me. So white it is!
Since then (to my hesitation) we've also painted the cement floor ... white ...
gatta mix some pigment into that white buddy - color = emotion princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/color2.htm
when we were picking a white to be used throughout the house on the trim, the wife chose from no less than 20 shades of white. took her and her father a week to decide on the trim color, let alone what to paint a room
other than ceilings and trim, i dont think we have a single wall painted white in the house
I have my favourite colour: "Whatever you like sweetie"
4
Give me the chip, and I'll take care of it from there.
19:29
@lsiunsuex I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem (indecisive-paint-picking-wife).
Although I do reserve a veto. Never had to use it yet.
@lsiunsuex we'll have wood furniture and other stuff on the walls to offset the white :)
@ChrisCudmore *'d :)
we argued for a week on the color of the kitchen
4 swatches - same color - different shades
(she won that one)
@lsiunsuex I saw that one coming.
19:31
Poles are important!!!
this picture gives me vertigo every time I look at it.
Never paint without one, unless you have backswing issues.
@lsiunsuex Yes, but how many times have you had to re-paint a single room?
the kitchen is the only one we did 2 times in the last 3 years. it was a complete gut and we had a light blue on hand so we used it when we remodeled it (3 years ago). we re-painted it a dark tericotta just this spring
the tones of all the rooms are the same, just different colors. if i showed you a picture of all the major rooms, if you didnt know, you'd think they were all from different houses
each room has a purpose and its own style. the dining room is a darker lavander / grey - cause its a sit down / have a nice dinner room. bedroom is calming darker blue, family room is a medium beige to match the furniture
@ChrisCudmore I love my pole
5
19:37
@joshmax Floor to ceiling in one stroke. Paint is so smooth and even.
Somehow I knew that would get stars... just not so quickly!
@ChrisCudmore YES! It was super easy to do the brick wall, too. Pole + mortar/brick roller = (getting img)
was also:
2
A: How do I remove construction glue from brick?

joshmaxTurns out a hammer & chisel worked great! Just took some time (just like anything else does)

I can't take those windows out now, but any ideas on what to temporarily do to lessen the garishness of those windows?
trim them with wood
out of here, gentlemen
till tomorrow.
Mask it really well, and try a matte grey spray on the metal.
@joshmax small oldschool shutters?
The paint job on the wall looks good.
19:44
maybe even functional ones?
Great ideas. Think I'll run them by the wife later. I'm tempted to put some funny pictures behind the glass just for kicks & giggles.
@ChrisCudmore gracias
@ChrisCudmore is that an oops or an oh dear?
@ChrisCudmore Lol
19:50
@ChrisCudmore Why would they put that pole there?
It's from thereifixedit.com
@Tester101 Duh... To support the roof.
@ChrisCudmore "whit"... lol
@joshmax I don't proofread memes.
I'd never finish.
Brilliant...
I'm out of here folks, but before I go...
Just say no.
The principal at my kids' school does the monthly newsletter in Comic Sans.
19:55
@ChrisCudmore Lovely. I work for a public school district, so I'm constantly bombarded with emails, flyers, pamphlets, t-shirts, etc -- all in Comic Sans.
@joshmax What if I only want 1 ice cube for my glass?
No no, that glass is not for drinking from...
@TheEvilGreebo You'll have two, and you'll like it!
oh... wait...
I'll live with Comic Sans. It's blatant abuse of PDFs that rustle my jimmies.
19:57
Unless you put two glasses really close together, then you can have one per glass.
I want to check the transfer station hours for public dumping -- Go to a pdf.
@Tester101 Thank you sir and may i have another.
@joshmax I'm guessing you have to run it under some hot water to get the cubes to unstick from the sides
@TheEvilGreebo No... You must have two more!
@Tester101 Thank you sir and may I have two others.
20:00
@Tester101 Thank you sir I will have two more.
now SHADDUP already!
sheesh, I gotta get back to work.... bye everyone.

Q: Should we add a recurring "bloopers" post to the blog?

Tester101I've been thinking of ways to continually add content to the blog, and the most recent idea is to have a recurring series of posts detailing DIY "bloopers". The general idea is for users to submit "mistakes" they've made while improving their homes, and posting 5-10 of them in a monthly/bi-month...

Lots of pictures shared in PUT today... They would look great in a blog post.
And suddenly the blue users return, we're not too subtle
@BMitch Oops, Forgot about the thing today. Anything interesting?
20:06
they just closed up, but it's bookmarked for you to review
nothing earth shattering to me, but for details you'll have to check over there
20:18
Are we still PUTting?
No. We're electrocuting squids right now. But if you'd like to drag us back on topic...
Has anyone used the new Lutron CL dimmers with two companion dimmers? My kitchen lights have 3 switches and I'm thinking of replacing them with CL dimmers.
Which means one master and two companions. But the instructions for the master say to refer to the instructions for the companion for how to wire them all together, and I can't find the latter anywhere on the Lutron website.
I dno't know if I have Lutron or not
but my CFL dimmer/cfl light combo hums something awful
Lutron technical support is being a pain. Me: please email me a link. Them: please call our technical support, wait on hold, explain what you need, get the wrong information, repeat as needed.
So, was wondering if anyone has installed the CL dimmers
Sorry to talk about home improvement instead of torturing sea creatures with Cypress Hill tunes
lemme find pic
well mine looks like this
tho I dont think it says lutron and probably isn't one
but no companion dimmers, just the one
20:24
That looks like a Lutron
unless you mean dimmable cfl bulbs?
What about getting z-wave dimmers?
yeah it is, it says lutron on it - i'm saying MINE doesn't say that I think
OK, now I get it.
i suppose Ic ould check what lowes sells
20:26
If you're controlling the lights from multiple locations, you need one master dimmer and N-1 companion dimmers.
ok i guess I do have a lutron, but its just the one switch so I prob cant help you
I think Lowe's mostly sells Cooper, but I think I've seen Lutron there too
Unrelated derail: Poster says, "I need a new computer and really like having two monitors." I give a few recommendations for low end pc's (low end user). Some time later, 3rd person asks, "Curious as to why you're advocating the two monitor capability, Greebo?"
Me: Because I read the OP's post. You may slap yourself in the forehead now. ;)
@TheEvilGreebo yikes
all in good fun :)
I'm not getting crap done here today - I'm gonna bolt
21:22
Thanks for joining this week's PUT
(I need to set a reminder for 5pm)
