Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Yay! Where's the beer?
So i finally did some DIY stuff this weekend.
Some yardwork - we bought an edger and I edged the sidewalks - but gonna have to make another pass at them
and I replaced the wax ring for our upstairs toilet and stopped it from raining pee water in the kitchen
we also planned out our future new kitchen layout, but that'll have to keep a bit - redoing the bath is next and will start soon
Did you hit any wood posts with the edger?
no but i got sparks off the sidewalk a few times
I managed to get the basement painted.
Laying the laminate tomorrow.
Those flock corner edgers are awesome! I'm never going back to brushes again.
flock corner edger?

Looking for an image.
Something like that.
nice
looks nice and thick
hope to make an attempt to finish this, this weekend.
About 30 seconds per corner.
wire the lights, drywall the closet, sand, prime, paint - trim can wait - before her sister arrives labor day weekend
Tape over those outlets!
Aug 23, 2012 19:07
why? mud chips off of plastic just fine using your finger nail / flat screw driver :)
Nah, painted over outlets is classy
oh yeah, before i paint for sure, tape the outlets, but not to mud
Amateur Tip: Don't paint the ceiling a different colour. It's just a pain.
latex sherwin williams paint is actually very forgiving on plastic leviton outlets as long as you wipe it up quickly - plus who rolls around the outlets? i brush around the outlets 4 inches, then feather in with the roller
I had the good fortune of only having a coil of wire in each opening. I just rolled right over.
It was quick and easy.

@ChrisCudmore dad and i like to put the outlets in before drywall to make sure the electrical is right. would really suck to drywall just to find out you f'ed up the electrical somehow haha
@lsiunsuex this pic looks an awful lot like mine....
looks good josh
Completely different. @lsiunsuex put in his drywall horizontally. @joshmax did it vertically. Not similar at all.
to late now but staggering the joints is key
makes it stronger / joint lines show less when painted as the eye doesn't have a single line to focus on
but a good job none the less
@TheEvilGreebo this makes me shutter.....
Aug 23, 2012 19:16
@lsiunsuex Looks like his went floor to ceiling - no need to stagger
@TheEvilGreebo Painted over outlets is only doing the job halfway. Do it right. Paint over the faceplate too.
@ChrisCudmore Winner winner chicken dinner!
@lsiunsuex with a 10' ceiling in there, one sheet floor-to-ceiling doesn't look half bad.
I think this was with just one coat of paint - I can still see the outlines a bit, here. Now, they're almost completely gone.
@joshmax Smooth
eh, didn't mean to imply you did a bad job by any means
Aug 23, 2012 19:19
@lsiunsuex didn't take it that way, no worries :)
the ceiling in that room is 7f 6in high? we would have had waste eitherway...
gotcha
That wall is actually this one...

A: How do I drywall over a partial cement wall?

joshmaxWell, it rained pretty heavily the entire week while I was working, so I waited a day or two before drywalling to see if I could find a leak. I believe whatever was causing the problem was fixed. I think the mold there was from back when that window used to be a doorway. Here's my fix: The wall...

and god knows not a single stud in the house is 16in on center.
i remember that post
came out nice
you leaving it white or are you gonna add some color?
@lsiunsuex I know how you feel....
@lsiunsuex It's going to be a studio/office for my wife & me. So white it is!
Aug 23, 2012 19:26
Since then (to my hesitation) we've also painted the cement floor ... white ...
gatta mix some pigment into that white buddy - color = emotion princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/color2.htm
when we were picking a white to be used throughout the house on the trim, the wife chose from no less than 20 shades of white. took her and her father a week to decide on the trim color, let alone what to paint a room
other than ceilings and trim, i dont think we have a single wall painted white in the house
I have my favourite colour: "Whatever you like sweetie"

Give me the chip, and I'll take care of it from there.
@lsiunsuex I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem (indecisive-paint-picking-wife).
Although I do reserve a veto. Never had to use it yet.
@lsiunsuex we'll have wood furniture and other stuff on the walls to offset the white :)
@ChrisCudmore *'d :)
Aug 23, 2012 19:30
we argued for a week on the color of the kitchen
4 swatches - same color - different shades
(she won that one)
@lsiunsuex I saw that one coming.
Poles are important!!!
this picture gives me vertigo every time I look at it.
Never paint without one, unless you have backswing issues.
Aug 23, 2012 19:33
@lsiunsuex Yes, but how many times have you had to re-paint a single room?
the kitchen is the only one we did 2 times in the last 3 years. it was a complete gut and we had a light blue on hand so we used it when we remodeled it (3 years ago). we re-painted it a dark tericotta just this spring
the tones of all the rooms are the same, just different colors. if i showed you a picture of all the major rooms, if you didnt know, you'd think they were all from different houses
each room has a purpose and its own style. the dining room is a darker lavander / grey - cause its a sit down / have a nice dinner room. bedroom is calming darker blue, family room is a medium beige to match the furniture
@ChrisCudmore I love my pole
5
@joshmax Floor to ceiling in one stroke. Paint is so smooth and even.
Somehow I knew that would get stars... just not so quickly!
@ChrisCudmore YES! It was super easy to do the brick wall, too. Pole + mortar/brick roller = (getting img)
was also:

A: How do I remove construction glue from brick?

joshmaxTurns out a hammer & chisel worked great! Just took some time (just like anything else does)

I can't take those windows out now, but any ideas on what to temporarily do to lessen the garishness of those windows?
trim them with wood
out of here, gentlemen
till tomorrow.
Aug 23, 2012 19:44
Mask it really well, and try a matte grey spray on the metal.
@joshmax small oldschool shutters?
The paint job on the wall looks good.
maybe even functional ones?
Great ideas. Think I'll run them by the wife later. I'm tempted to put some funny pictures behind the glass just for kicks & giggles.
@ChrisCudmore gracias
Aug 23, 2012 19:48
@ChrisCudmore is that an oops or an oh dear?
@ChrisCudmore Lol
@ChrisCudmore Why would they put that pole there?
It's from thereifixedit.com
@Tester101 Duh... To support the roof.
@ChrisCudmore "whit"... lol
Aug 23, 2012 19:51
@joshmax I don't proofread memes.
I'd never finish.
Brilliant...
I'm out of here folks, but before I go...
Just say no.
The principal at my kids' school does the monthly newsletter in Comic Sans.
@ChrisCudmore Lovely. I work for a public school district, so I'm constantly bombarded with emails, flyers, pamphlets, t-shirts, etc -- all in Comic Sans.
@joshmax What if I only want 1 ice cube for my glass?
No no, that glass is not for drinking from...
Aug 23, 2012 19:57
@TheEvilGreebo You'll have two, and you'll like it!
oh... wait...
I'll live with Comic Sans. It's blatant abuse of PDFs that rustle my jimmies.
Unless you put two glasses really close together, then you can have one per glass.
I want to check the transfer station hours for public dumping -- Go to a pdf.
@Tester101 Thank you sir and may i have another.
Aug 23, 2012 19:58
@joshmax I'm guessing you have to run it under some hot water to get the cubes to unstick from the sides
@TheEvilGreebo No... You must have two more!
@Tester101 Thank you sir and may I have two others.
@Tester101 Thank you sir I will have two more.
now SHADDUP already!
sheesh, I gotta get back to work.... bye everyone.

Q: Should we add a recurring "bloopers" post to the blog?

Tester101I've been thinking of ways to continually add content to the blog, and the most recent idea is to have a recurring series of posts detailing DIY "bloopers". The general idea is for users to submit "mistakes" they've made while improving their homes, and posting 5-10 of them in a monthly/bi-month...

Lots of pictures shared in PUT today... They would look great in a blog post.
And suddenly the blue users return, we're not too subtle
@BMitch Oops, Forgot about the thing today. Anything interesting?
they just closed up, but it's bookmarked for you to review
nothing earth shattering to me, but for details you'll have to check over there
Aug 23, 2012 20:18
Are we still PUTting?
No. We're electrocuting squids right now. But if you'd like to drag us back on topic...
Has anyone used the new Lutron CL dimmers with two companion dimmers? My kitchen lights have 3 switches and I'm thinking of replacing them with CL dimmers.
Which means one master and two companions. But the instructions for the master say to refer to the instructions for the companion for how to wire them all together, and I can't find the latter anywhere on the Lutron website.
I dno't know if I have Lutron or not
but my CFL dimmer/cfl light combo hums something awful
Lutron technical support is being a pain. Me: please email me a link. Them: please call our technical support, wait on hold, explain what you need, get the wrong information, repeat as needed.
So, was wondering if anyone has installed the CL dimmers
Sorry to talk about home improvement instead of torturing sea creatures with Cypress Hill tunes
lemme find pic
well mine looks like this
tho I dont think it says lutron and probably isn't one
but no companion dimmers, just the one
Aug 23, 2012 20:24
That looks like a Lutron
unless you mean dimmable cfl bulbs?
What about getting z-wave dimmers?
yeah it is, it says lutron on it - i'm saying MINE doesn't say that I think
OK, now I get it.
i suppose Ic ould check what lowes sells
Aug 23, 2012 20:26
If you're controlling the lights from multiple locations, you need one master dimmer and N-1 companion dimmers.
ok i guess I do have a lutron, but its just the one switch so I prob cant help you
I think Lowe's mostly sells Cooper, but I think I've seen Lutron there too
Unrelated derail: Poster says, "I need a new computer and really like having two monitors." I give a few recommendations for low end pc's (low end user). Some time later, 3rd person asks, "Curious as to why you're advocating the two monitor capability, Greebo?"
Me: Because I read the OP's post. You may slap yourself in the forehead now. ;)
@TheEvilGreebo yikes
all in good fun :)
I'm not getting crap done here today - I'm gonna bolt
Aug 23, 2012 21:22
Thanks for joining this week's PUT
