The problem is, I'd need another 5k in yardwork to give it a suitable home

Anybody know anything about Trigeneration? Could a system like this be useful in a residential setting?

@tester101 I think electricity from your local utility would be cheaper than natural gas.

electricity around here is bleeping expensive

my gas bill is lower in the winter, than my electric bill is in the summer. And I try to limit how much I run the central A\C, whereas I run the heat all the time in the winter.

Whenever I turn on the A\C, I watch the meter spin and I start sweating more.

@Aaron Where is makeup air coming from?

There are 2 gable vents, one on either side (facing west and east)

I could put a vent fan in just one of them and suck the air in the other one I suppose

Sounds like a good idea to me then. just don't put a fan in each vent blowing out.

I'm not quite sure I understand the thermodynamics of how blowing hot air out of the attic will keep the insulated space cooler though

The optimal solution would be to use an anemometer to turn one fan off and the other on, depending on the outside wind direction.

@Aaron Because it will be sucking cooler outside air into the space.

@Aaron Insulation slows the transfer of heat. If the temperature is the same on both sides, there's little to slow, but the larger the difference in temperature, the faster the transfer through the insulation

But the insulated space is under the attic

@Aaron Is your oven mitt one sided?

You blow it out one side, creating negative pressure in the attic. the cooler outside air is pulled (or pushed depending on who you talk to) into the attic.

@Tester101 right, I get the pressure differential sucking the cooler air in, but I don't get how that keeps the 2nd floor from getting hot

@Aaron You use a trivet to pull dishes out of the oven? That should be a youtube video.

@Aaron long story short, yes heat rises, but it also transfers in all directions

think of it like water. water always tries to find equilibrium. So too does heat.

So if the attic is 120 F and the 2nd story is 85F by making the attic 100F instead the 2nd story might only be 80F?

if you keep the same amount of water in the attic as you have in the house, the water will not move between the two.

@Aaron that's correct. the less temperature difference, the less transfer.

Sadly, as I have a slate roof the solar powered hole in the roof ones are not really practical

And on the gable fans, we had them growing up. But we didn't turn them on constantly, only during the evening after a really hot day.
