@RebeccaChernoff: thanks for watching the paint dry for us. Maybe we should schedule these chats for only 2-3 hours. They seem to die after a couple hours.
01:39
might be an idea

12 hours later…
13:38
Ah man, the chat just dies when I'm not here? That's totally false -- it was puttering along nicely last week without me. :D
14:16
Face it @AarthiDevanathan - people like you :)
@SteveJackson lolol awwww <3
@Rapture well hello!
aww they left
Good morning all. And see, @AarthiDevanathan, it was dead quiet until you showed up. :)
I'll second (third) the shopvac over rigid recommendation. I have a rigid, and it's a nice vac, but I'm always looking for filters.
@NiallC as in this chat? because heck yes it was. I worked really hard to populate this place.
Hi @NiallC
14:23
@AarthiDevanathan yes... I even posted a meta question about it being deleted it was so quiet.
@NiallC i think i saw that and was dismayed.
hopefully next week's Project Update Thursday will be a bit more lively; no more system messages, but we'll put up an advertisement instead
14:37
Hey there, @BMitch
15:29
@AarthiDevanathan, howdy, sorry, I have a habit of peaking in here real quick before rushing back to work
@BMitch naaaah no worries

2 hours later…
17:18
Relevant to our interests:
Alt text: "According to every stud finder I've tried to use, my walls contain a rapidly shifting network of hundreds and hundreds of studs."
At least you don't live in the Cube), then you'd have to worry about shifting rooms.
18:07
@AarthiDevanathanΨ My walls are like this too! And I have a stud finder that detects live wires behind every inch of wall.
@SteveJackson i feel like every cheapie studfinder i've ever had just beeps everywhere.
A hard drive magnet is my preferred solution. Pretty awesome really.
This is the one I have. Not a cheapo. May be operator error :)
@SteveJackson that....wow. nice.
The laser part is useful (I have a real hard time with straight lines - tragic since my whole family is artsy except me), but the stud finding is about the same as every other one I've used. And that "Caution! Electricty" LED stays lit most of the time.
@SteveJackson i just was most amused that xkcd was literally relevant to our interests today
18:14
@AarthiDevanathanΨ Lets get Randall on the site!
lol omg yes please
18:30
there's my humor for the day
Love the relevant xkcd
it's pretty A+
@AarthiDevanathanΨ That's been my experience too. Either that or a mesh of electric cables interwoven with plumbing.
@ChrisF gah that sounds terrible.
@AarthiDevanathanΨ Well usually the cables aren't there, but the stud/cable finder tells me they are. I end up using different methods ;)
@ChrisF hahaha
18:57
so, @ChrisF since you're hereish anyway
Yes.....
i know we'd talked about not having the system notification yellow paint roll thing after the first two weeks for PUT
but yesterday's convo was entirely me-driven
and we didn't get random passers-by dropping in
@AarthiDevanathanΨ Ah. OK. I'll set the event up to be permanent. We can always stop it later.
I think we should also reduce the length by an hour
the last hour -- usually the one I can't be there for -- is historically pretty dead.
if the chat runs over, the bookmarks can be adjusted for that :)
@ChrisF you're awesome! <3
So start at 19:00 UTC?
19:00
ChrisF has added an event to this room's schedule.
@ChrisF end at 2300 instead, imho
wait
I can't set it to go on forever, so I've set it until December. We can always cancel it later. I've also set it for 120 minutes - I don't think I can set it for any longer
you mean 1900-2300?
oh!
yessss
perfect!
:D :D
No - my mistake I can set it for at least 240 minutes, which would take us to 23:00 UTC. Shall I cancel and reset?
nah 120 is fine.
19:03
That must be a recent change
if it runs over, it runs over.
I'll try to turn up :)
hooray!
@BMitch @SteveJackson you both should register, too :D :D
so it'll go from 20:00 to 22:00 UTC? that's fine, and sooo much better for my work schedule
@AarthiDevanathanΨ No 19:00 to 21:00 UTC
@ChrisF A+ works for me.
19:09
@AarthiDevanathanΨ Registered and will try to attend. I also have to complete at least one minor project this weekend so I'm hoping to remember to take pictures to share with the class.
@SteveJackson A+!
@JayBazuzi did you see you're being roll called for the blog? We want YURT!
I shared some of my shower pictures in an answer on wet rooms the other night. If When we get the blog up and running I will contribute a post about the project.

Q: Who will contribute to and edit the blog?

Karl KatzkeBlog discussion time! In discussions on the Meta we've established that we probably do want a blog to tell stories and share pictures and media that don't fit into the format of questions-and-answers. The next step that we have to decide on is who is willing to contribute to the blog, and who wil...

19:12
I already blog about my projects elsewhere.
jbazuzihouse.blogspot.com
Awesome - will read in detail this weekend.
@JayBazuzi Maybe you could contribute an "overview"post with a link back your blog for more details.
There's already a lot of 'what is a yurt?' out there.
I showed up today to look for flooring advice on my washhouse project.
This is a 100 sq. ft. building with a bathroom + washer + dryer in it.
I'm stuck on floor material. I don't want vinyl (bad for the planet) or tile (too much work). I'm cheap, lazy, and green. Tough combo.
I have a huge deck of Douglas Fir logs waiting to be milled, and I thought of using that as a floor.
@JayBazuzi I get that. The blog is a little different than the QA though, we want to explore getting interesting information out there along with having a repository of answers. Sure there's lots of "What is a yurt" - but I wouldn't know to google it in the first place if I didn't see it on a site I visited. Like diy.se.
@JayBazuzi My first thought is cheap cork. Do you want/care if it looks cheap?
Hmm.
Looks are not very important. I'd take "rustic".
OK, I'll think about writing somethign for the blog.
19:25
So you're thinking of building a deck inside out of fir? I haven't seen that before :)
Basically, yes.
@JayBazuzi also register for the chat! :D :D
When I say "deck of Douglas Fir" I mean a pile 6' high of logs 13' and 26' long, up to 18" diameter.
I guess that use of "deck" is Pacific Northwest logger jargon.
Are you going to mill it into boards first?
yes, that's the idea.
I'm going to have a woodmizer come out here shortly
19:31
I think it's a fun idea, definitely give you that rustic look.
@AarthiDevanathan, registered
I wonder if it would work unfinished. Planed & sanded, but not coated.
then, when it fails, I pull it up & use it as firewood :-)
It will definitely fail - what's your timeframe for the washroom?
19:34
@JayBazuzi is this a burning man thing?
:)
I've got to run, I'll check back in a few hours
I, too, gotta roll. peace, everyone! :D
/waves
I want to build it this fall, why?
@JayBazuzi I meant how long do you want it to last?
I don't need it to last 100's of years.
Long-lasting sounds nice but...
It's more important to me that if something wears out, it doesn't sit in a landfill forever.
So, for example, vinyl flooring is troublesome that way.
I'm bucking a convention in our culture that says that long-lasting in service is great but long-lasting in trash is irrelevant.
So, if the floor is made of unfinished wood and it lasts (say) 10 years, I can pull up the floor, use it as firewood, and put down a new one.
20:03
@JayBazuzi Have you looked into the soy-based wood sealers that are on the market now?
I haven't used them but have seen them and I'm curious about them too

1 hour later…
21:04
@Jay I'd feel better if it was sealed (especially the ends) - but I've seen unfinished fir decks that have lasted decades. I'm wondering if a washroom gets more foot traffic than a deck and how that might speed things up. I'd actually worry a bit about rot from underneath and how that might affect board curing. What's the plan for the subfloor?
