Q: Best review sites/web resources for finding a contractor?

Doug T.Many times we need to hire a contractor and try to extensively google for reviews on that contractor. Sometimes to no avail :( Just curious what web resources you use when trying to find a contractor? Be it a review site or some other method, what have you used in the past to identify the best p...

I have problems with this question. It encourages link only answers and self promotion. But, those answers might very well be the best answers to the question.
@ChrisCudmore I've got the same problems with that question, it's basically a valid location for spamming the site

Why is it that nobody thinks people know what color copper is?
I thought copper was the color of copper?
Except when it's black
or green
how many wires is that tapped on the small terminals 2 and 4
and what's up with that loose wire on terminal 3
Was anyone else bothered that the red jumper wire there isn't bent around the screw, just sitting straight?
Maybe it loops all the way around?
Since there's a copper plate connecting the screw below that, I would have moved that jumper down and wrapped it.

I can't even find that thermostat. Closest I can find, only has 3 terminals
15:57
Here's one where you can actually read the terminal numbers.

@ChrisCudmore I've locked the question.
Good solution, why didn't I think of that.
Is there any way to view reputation gain per year/month/quarter since a user joined?
You can view pretty graphs: diy.stackexchange.com/users/2196/…
But they don't work so well for me when I select too large of a timeframe
@NiallC. I like yours better

@BMitch Thanks!
Would you believe I wrote it myself?
@NiallC. you're writing SE pages?
@BMitch No, just trying to take credit for them
@NiallC. ah, good, because I was going to tell you "no, I wouldn't believe it"
My response: "Get out of here, I don't believe you."
@BMitch You're the GIF king!
@Tester101 let me fix that for you

Does this question make sense to anybody else?

Why is it that nobody thinks people know what color copper is?
I'm so tempted to approve that, @Tester101

@Tester101 A lot of them are just google image searches
google search -> images -> search tools -> type -> animated

Welcome to Project Update Thursday
20:30
I've got some stuff... my garbage disposal died so I'll be replacing that this weekend.
While I'm under the sink, I'm going to take the opportunity to replace my kitchen faucet of cutting out intermittently fame
Probably with this:
It's hard to find objective comparisons of pull-down, pull-out and standalone sprayer faucets.
And that's all I've got.
21:30
@NiallC. I'm personally a fan of the pull-out style for putting less wear on the hose (that's just a theory, no practical experience). It really depends on the style of your kitchen, mine is cramped so I looked for things that wouldn't make the space feel any smaller.
@BMitch Some of the stuff I've read online suggests that you have to change your grip between pulling the sprayer out of the faucet and using it. Do you find that too?
So, hand over the sprayer to grasp it, then switch to hand underneath for spraying
@NiallC. It depends on what you're spraying. If you're trying to fill a pot that's too large for the sink, then you just pull straight out. If I'm trying to spray the sink itself (washing off the back and sides), I tend to do a two handed operation to avoid kinking the hose.
My hand is typically over the sprayer, with fingers at the buttons to switch from spray to stream (I intentionally got one with buttons on the bottom where they are less visible)
21:45
Hmm... I'll have to play with them again when I go back to the store, and see which one feels more natural.
Forgot to mention, I also have an instant hot-water heater under there. It hasn't worked in quite a while so it'll be coming out too.
@NiallC. just as important as how it works is how it fits your home, find something that matches your style and space. If you're anything like me, it will spend a majority of it's time in the retracted position.
Thanks for joining us for this week's PUT

Q: Is there still a need for Project Update Thursday?

BMitchThe weekly PUT meetings have been fizzling lately, mostly because many of the regulars are busy with our lives. Do we still need to have a PUT, should it be changed (new time?), or is there something else we should be doing to attract more regulars to the chat (and to the blog)? If there's no int...

@BMitch The sink is currently very cluttered with faucet, sprayer, instant hot water and soap dispenser. Cutting that down to faucet and soap will make that a lot nicer.
Longer term, the whole kitchen will eventually be replaced (or the house will kill me first)
22:01
@NiallC. Are you replacing the sink too? Otherwise there will be some holes to cover. I really like the look of a simple faucet and soap dispenser without all the other clutter.
@BMitch Hadn't planned on it at this time... I was going to make it part of the whole kitchen remodel thing.
@NiallC. if the whole kitchen remodel doesn't include the countertop and cabinets, now may be a good time for the sink. With the sink out you can do a bunch of connections for the faucet and disposal without lying awkwardly on your back.
but I only suggest that if you have a drop in sink, not an undermount
@BMitch It's a drop-in.
This garbage-disposal replacement project is adding up quickly
lol, don't you hate how that happens
Like a lot of my projects, I guess. Repaint a room? First, take it down to the studs
22:08
I started with "replace a refrigerator" and ended up gutting the kitchen and getting ready to replace the rest of the flooring on that level of the house.
Mike Holmes screwed us all up with his "if you're going to do it, do it right" advice.
There are some spendy sink hole covers out there: plumbersurplus.com/Prod/Kohler-K-8830-NY-Sink-Hole-Cover-Dune/…
Little tip, if you're buying from big orange and have a discover card, go to shop discover for all your big purchases and pick them up in the store, 5% cash back.
anyway, time for me to do some chores, l8r
