You can shove a horse into the river, but sometimes they drown instead of drink
Edit the question to better phrase it, avoiding any product/vendor specific links if possible, and the community can look into reopening it. — BMitch 19 hours ago
crickets chirping
@BMitch drivebys rarely come back and edit :(
@waxeagle This one came back after we put it on hold to state that the hold didn't apply
Doesn't help that their other question was also held up, which I released. It's possible that they are just in the hospital after electrocuting themselves, so there's still hope they'll come back to fix their other question.

Q: Ground wire behaves weird

user1684652I never experienced this and it doesn't really make sense. I installed recessed lights(6) with the switch. I connected them all in parallel. The house uses only two wires for lights, white and black. I connected all ground wire and connected it together. I also tried to connect ground wire to ev...

Why do people think that if a breaker trips, it must be defective? It's more common to have faults in the wiring than in breakers.

Q: What is causing my circuit breaker to trip instantly and trip the next breaker too? Update - Video Added

iambriansreedOne of my circuit breaker trips instantly. I try to reset it but it trips immediately and trips the breaker under it too. I can reset the break next to it and it is fine until I try to reset the problem breaker again. Could the breaker itself be bad? and if so could I swap it out myself? How...

@Tester101 Because people don't want to admit they made a mistake
that video of him playing with the breakers has darwin written all over it
We need a sign: It's been 0 days since a visitor to this site has electrocuted themselves.

Also, I'm tired of hearing about nuisance tripping GFCI/AFCIs. If an appliance is tripping the GFCI/AFCI, the appliance is faulty. Appliance manufacturers are aware these things exist, and how they operate. There is no excuse for them not to make compliant appliances.

@ChrisCudmore I'm not really sure there's an answer I can accept yet.. @BMitch's answer does seem a bit better, but is suggesting hot roof, the other answer is saying not to do that. same votes for both

Q: Do I need to add roof vents if I close off a small attic space in the garage?

gregmacI have a small section of roof over the front of my garage, which I would like to insulate and drywall (making my garage fully insulated). It is 39" high, and 54" by 17', framed with 2x4 trusses, and facing almost directly north (I don't think it ever gets direct sun). I'm located in south ea...

@BMitch it should be a question when you sign up. We can have a badge/icon for each electrocution show up under their name
15:46
@gregmac I think a hot roof is the common solution. Local contractors should have a good idea of how this is typically handled, since unless this is a custom build it's likely a problem they've faced before.
16:18
@Tester101 that's what I'm leaning towards right now. now if I could just get some time to get someone in to actually quote on the job ... :p
@gregmac Good luck getting an Ontario contractor to call you back.
I'm on my third week of hunting for a posthole digger to set my fence posts. 2 have said they would do the job, and never called back again.
@ChrisCudmore I find if I call 3 or 4, usually one calls back :)
I made myself a promise that I would never chase a contractor. If you don't call back, I move on.
yeah, that's fair
I am also trying to only use people that have websites
I think it's absurd in 2013 for any business to not have SOME web presence
I haven't actually looked at yellow pages in.. years.. but I do recall seeing a high number of listings that showed a website, but then you try to go to it and it doesn't exist (or has been taken over by a domain parking spammer)
I called the general contractor that did my basement for another quote and left a message. He called me back at 9:00 am the next day saying "My wife's in labour and we're going to the hospital. Can I call you back tomorrow?"
That's dedication to maintaining the client base.
16:25
yeah. and a very good excuse
@ChrisCudmore that happened when i was getting quotes to pour concrete for the patio. i called this guy twice, he kept taking like 5 days to get back to me. finally he wants to do it by that time 2 weeks passed. if you want my business, take it. otherwise, theres plenty more guys out there like you that could use the work
how much of an ass would i be if i checked the browser version and anything less then internet explorer 10, i presented a page that said to either upgrade to 10 or install chrome / firefox or safari ?
Google has stopped supporting IE 9.
So, fair enough for you to follow their lead.
cause IE 8 looks like crap and I dont have a 9 laptop to test on, nor do I want to build one...
so google only supports 10 ?
wonder what the minimum version facebook supports
'Internet Explorer 9 users
As previously announced, Internet Explorer 11 launched on October 17, 2013, and as a result, we've discontinued support for Internet Explorer 9.
hm, good point
we still support "IE8+". just floated the idea of dropping IE8 and IE9...
now waiting for our support manager to yell at me... :)
@gregmac I'm not looking for any rep, just giving general advice from what I've seen/read. I would lean much more on the expertise of a spray foam contractor as long as you can separate out what's advice and what's a sales pitch.
16:42
@BMitch yeah that's a concern. i'm doing spray foam anyway on the rest of the garage roof, so this should only be a fairly small part of the job..
holy crap. From july to september, IE8 share grew faster than IE10. WTF?
especially in north america
@gregmac upgrades to windows 7 and upgrdes to newest browser version
windows 7 has IE 8 out of the box IIRC.
I still have IE6 on systems I use. :)
@BMitch vomit. I like to take some of the credit for getting our company out of the mandatory IE 6 dark age
16:58
@waxeagle it's not mandatory, everyone is just too lazy to push the change on the server and it's hard to justify the change request when the only site I browse to from the server is an internal page that works just fine on IE6.
The only external site I hit is the microsoft redirect asking me to upgrade the browser. :)
lol
servers it's no biggie
something like that - little browser version check script and their on their own otherwise
17:15
And we're through the looking glass in Toronto.
@lsiunsuex there used to be a couple nice sites for that, but i can't find them now.

Welcome to Project Update Thursday
20:21
@BMitch Hello Project Update Thursday. I've still done nothing for any of my projects. Thankyou Thursday for making me feel guilty.
@JimmyHoffa you and me both.
Still waiting for my post holes.
Ok, I don't feel guilty, I accepted my laziness long ago. Plus this time I land high in the Range of Excuses with being sick as hell.
Don't get too closely to your screens, you really don't want to catch this crap I'm coughing everywhere over here.
@ChrisCudmore, hope you didn't take my joke in the elections room the wrong way, just a little Airplane humor. Hopefully you've seen the movie to get it.
20:26
Nope. I don't take anything seriously.
I've seen the movie many times, but I don't recall the context of that scene. Was it after they landed?
@ChrisCudmore yup, well after the landing
Hence the joke, I like to wish people good luck a week or two after an event. I'm probably going to hell, but it should be a fun ride.
If someone wants some easy rep, make a generic question about how to identify the C wiring terminal on an unlabeled HVAC control board. Then we'll forward merge all the earlier questions about that as dups and tester can post his one answer to rule them all.
I think we should also add to the c-wire wiki the "If you're using this tag, your question is a dupe."

20:59
@BMitch I am in that nation too
21:58
Thanks for joining us for this week's PUT
I should actually say "thanks for procrastinating with is" or "thanks for ignoring us"
@ChrisCudmore Screaming warnings all over tags are sometimes your best bet

Q: Header joist sizing for loft bed

user16004I've decided to design and build a king-sized loft bed for our bedroom. Basically, I've got an 80" x 89" frame, 54" off the floor, covered with slats instead of plywood (see model, but ignore the boards that are standing in for guard rails). I'm sure I'll have other questions (and I haven't deal...

that tag yell is my handiwork, most polite way I could come up with to say "DON'T POST YOUR DAMN QUESTION, I MEAN IT"
22:00
Wow, who puts a king size bed up on a loft.
@JimmyHoffa I like it, now we just need to get people to actually read the tags they are adding to questions. Today I changed the tags on a question from to
@BMitch People who are less than 54" tall, that's who!
Every once in a while I flip/rotate my queen size mattress by myself, doing that for this bed will require a team.
