What time is the project chat?

cool, thanks.
`love the camel commercial
whats on your agenda @Monso
Oh, my house is "missing" a few interior walls and my kitchen is in pieces, I'm more interested in reading the stuff live-time inside of through the history

well, if you want to ask some questions we can discuss it

A: Obfuscating string values in PHP source code

Marc BThis is a, frankly, stupid way of "protecting" your code. Hopefully you realize that once the code is delivered to the clients, they can simply undo all of this and extract the values themselves? Use legal means to protect the code. "here's my code, you are not allowed to share it. If you do, I...

Claws vs Clamps

Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus is a monster/disaster film by The Asylum, released on May 19, 2009, in the United States and on August 7, 2009, in the United Kingdom. It was directed by Ace Hannah and stars singer Debbie Gibson and actor Lorenzo Lamas. Though it was met with a negative reaction from critics for its outlandish plot, it is arguably the most popular film by The Asylum to date. The film is about the hunt for two prehistoric sea monsters causing mayhem and carnage at sea. This film is also notable as one of the very few American films to feature an Asian American male as a ro...

@Aaron They make up in the end. This is the 2010 Sequel:
Sharktopus is a 2010 American low-budget science fiction film directed by Declan O'Brien, starring Eric Roberts. It is a Syfy production and was produced by Roger Corman. Plot The U.S. Navy commissions a group known as "Blue Water" to genetically engineer a half-shark, half-octopus for combat. During a demonstration destroying drug traffickers off Santa Monica, the beast escapes the control of its creators and makes its way to Puerto Vallarta. in duct work - a dampener turns which way to be open ?
same as a bottle? righty tighty lefty loosy ?
18:58
@lsiunsuex I think they can close to either side, but I did some trial and error to figure out the best side to be closed. Inline with the duct is open.
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Oooh! PUT!
Cleaned the garage. That's it.
I just came back from an autonomous robot competition, got 3rd in world!
bravo
Fixed my AC on Monday night! only took me two amazon orders and a twighlight trip to walmart...ended up completing the fix with a headlamp on...
My compressor was smoking so I decided to look into it
The outer piston was also being chewed away by the outer counterweight/balancer
@Monso awesome
19:09
These were new pistons with new bearing so now I've got to find out why this happened too
Added a water line for the fridge
The squirrel cage was in pieces so now sure which happened first
Demoed further down the walls so I can fix the electrical that was in the soffits properly.
being unemployed has provided me with the time to paint the garage door and trim, clean the garage, paint the trim around a window on the patio, paint the patio door, do some landscaping, seal the flag stone, seal the planting bed top cap
and that was just in the first week!
And yes, there's a sawzall in my kitchen, what else do you cut your sandwiches with?

19:11
looks good @BMitch
@BMitch A chop saw, duh
Pulled out the bottom cabinet on one side, almost ready to lose my sink on the other side. Floor was also pulled up.
I think I figured out my squeak/sagging floor. Looks like they missed the joist on one of their seams so I'll pull the subfloor up in one spot and shift it over.by one joist.
Oh, and I replaced the florescent tube light with recessed led.
No, the photo isn't upside down. Yes, that's a pencil I found stuck to my ceiling when I removed the old light fixture.
Dang, that's where my pencil went. I've been looking all over for that.
It really should have been the first place you'd look for a pencil
@waxeagle Headlamps really are essential for home repair projects. It's too hard to find a kid that wants to sit and hold a light these days, no attention span.
19:27
@BMitch remember snake lights. do those still exist?
I've got a flexible light with my power tool kit, it's usually left in the box since a headlamp is so much more useful.
actually, mine should be the 18v version, but same deal
@waxeagle so what was the problem with the AC, bad blower motor?
@BMitch I think it was the Cap, but I ended up doing the motor too
and putting in two new Caps instead of just one...
were they bulging out on top, ready to blow?
I'm always eyeing caps after there was a batch of bad caps several years ago.
@BMitch no, just very rusty.
AC started blowing warm air the other week, right before vacation. I came back and realize the fan wasn't spinning outside. Seemed like a good bet it was the motor or the cap...I didn't really want to buy a Cap just or it to be the motor so I decided to go ahead and replace both...got them in and realized the motor needed a seperate cap...
motor or cap, whatever I did fixed it :)
though that wth moment when I realized the new motor has 4 wires and my old motor only had three was kinda priceless.
19:45
The forth wire is just another run wire.
@Tester101 yep, I found a video and there was a helpful diagram on the motor :)
The 2 capacitors are the Start capacitor, and the Run capacitor.
The start capacitor is used to get the motor running, and is removed from the circuit once the motor reaches a specific speed.
@Tester101 well in this case it's just a pair of run caps. one for the motor, one for the compressor
The run capacitor is used to create a second phase, for a single phase motor.
I finally got around to fixing my slow drains.
I ended up paying a guy to replace the caps and he left it running backwards
19:52
Turns out the previous owners were very hairy.
Dang, so the fan was adding heat instead of removing it?
Well the fan and compressor were running backwards, I'd like to think it was doing nothing
That was 3-4 years ago, had a guy out last week to check it. Said new systems are rated for a 20deg difference and mind was doing 25 so don't touch anything
@Tester101 How was that still draining
@Monso It wasn't. That's why I finally had to get around to it.
20:13
@Monso yikes. My new motor actually has a set of wires to flip the direction if it happens to be running backwards. It seems to be running correctly though so I haven't messed with them.
@waxeagle Yeah, it had a red to black and black to red
gotcha. and the compressor was running backwards too? that's not good
it was one motor
20:50
So I've got a plumbing question
I have a shower/tub that has a plug only allows a slow drain. Up to your ankles for a shower, but clears in a few hours
1 hour ago, by Tester101
user image
I've tried chemically, a snake, hose with expanding end, baking soda/vinegar (which worked the best) but still have a problem. I've been avoiding using that shower
touche, it's probably hair but I can't figure out what to try next
Does the drain have a stopper that you put in the drain, or a lever that moves the stopper into place?
I have the lever that block the pipe, same lever as pic 2 but different plugging tech
20:57
yeah
Have you pulled the plunger out and cleaned it?
Thanks for joining us for this week's PUT
I've pulled it out and it looks fine, the grate/drain has a cross inside it to hold it down and I can't get the snake in there so I snaked from the overflow plate with the plunger out of course

If I put the hose in the overflow, it will run back to the grate so the clog isn't there
21:00
Do you know how the drain is vented?
I believe it's vented from the sink vent/drain
not positive
Is the sink slow?
nope
neither is the downstream toilet
and there is not back flow from anything into the shower
If it takes a few hours to drain, there must be a fairly large obstruction. What type of snake did you use?
Monso, how far have you gone wit the snake?
21:07
about a 1/4" coil with a 1/2" coil head
it's a 25ft snake, get stuck at some bend after about 8-10ft
Is the drain line copper, cast iron, PVC, or something else?
Is the drain line accessible?
I tried a snake a couple of times on my bathtub, and was close to giving up, but then I tried it again, and got the snake right up in the overflow drain, kept cranking and eventually pulled a mess of hair out
I spun it for a few minutes, it came back with a minute amount of hair and black grease stuff all over it
1948 house, seems like steel or cast iron 4", I don't have a clean out
Are you sure the "bend" that you're stuck on, isn't really the clog?
It's a kinda sharp tip and I literally spun it for minutes
and it should of been way past a clog, I know it doesn't make sense.
21:11
Is the pipe underground?
I've had this clog for about 1.5 years and try to fix it every few months, I just use the other bathroom
@Tester101 Yes, I have dug up where it enters the house (we had a water main leak a few years back)
So the tub drain line is underground? I'd suspect a collapsed/damaged pipe.
That doesn't sound cheap or weekend DIY
I guess it's pro time, maybe start with an inspection scope to see how screwed I am
the problem with scopes (and I have one) is that a lot of the water line bends are hard to get the scope around, the radius is too small
maybe a special plumbing scope would work better
Yeah, I don't own a scope....yet.
It's on my list
Local HomeDepot has one on sale, would work for crap in the this situation but I want it anyways for wall and attic work
21:18
You shouldn't have any trouble feeding a snake through a 4" pipe, I'd guess the "bend" is actually an obstruction.
I don't have a clean out, closest downstream is 1 1/2" sink drain
I'd call a pro to come have a look. They'll put a camera down there, and tell you exactly what's wrong.
dang, ok
I think there's a sharp bend in mine then, and mine isn't 4" from the tub, at least not right away
@Monso Sorry I couldn't help.
21:26
Second opinion is still help, thanks
Time to make the donuts, later fellas.
I'm out too
