burning popcorn in an office should be grounds for termination

Me as a systems admin: "why do i need to alter the config of my workstations to force IE10 into compatibility mode so your crappy website works properly? We're on IE10, not IE7, wake up, its 2013"

Me as a web developer "Stop using a shitty, non standards compliant browser. IE10 is garbage, use Firefox or Chrome"
I always develop in FF/Chrome and then do the minimum work necessary to make it work in IE. I'll ALWAYS take an acceptable compromise across browsers over having to insert ugly hacks to make something perfect across the set.
@ChrisCudmore me too - Firefox first, quick run through on Chrome, if it works in chrome, then it should work in Safari. IEx last to clean up the mess
Yeah. Let the browsers do what they will unless it's stupid.
usually if it works in firefox, it works in chrome unless i'm doing some really crazy javascript, at which point, it almost certainly will not work in IE
17:14
anyways, the point was, we were updating windows 7 pc's in the office and it installed IE10 - some website some of our employees use, a important feature of the site doesn't work in IE10, so i had to force compatibility mode
why should i as a sys admin have to do that? you as the web developer should make sure the site works in all major browsers - or - force compatibility mode yourself
The mere existence of compatibility irks me.
agreed
I wouldn't mind so much if it was "Standards mode" and "Experimental mode" That way we could play with the newest and latest and greatest features before they get absorbed into the standards. But every browser should have a "Strict" mode that we can rely on.
no, every browser should just follow the standard - period. no interpretation, no leaving it open for creativity. every browser should work exactly the same. differences in browsers will then be features; plugins and addins, speed, design, etc... the actual rendering of a page should be mandated the same across all browsers
17:42
Dear Internet: No. I do not live in Toronto, Ohio. And I'd wish you'd stop telling me I do. Guessing Ohio would be correct 1 time in 500.
Finally finished the play house.
saw that on facebook - looks good dude
is there more to it or does it stop at the wall in the photo?
That's it.
We don't want to provide a dope smoking area for future teenagers, so we left it open on the three sides.
Originally it was to be 5x5, but the domestic sergeant major nixed that plan.
looks nice
I had the blocks laid out and leveled, but she took one look and said I had to go 4x6.
Which actually ended up saving me a whole lot of lumber.
17:46
And a full sheet of plywood.
So now I have to design a pintel mount for a super-soaker machine gun.
17:59
I've got a product naming question
@ChrisCudmore I'd call that a play Lean-to
I've always just called (and heard it called) cord
It's basically a rubberized line
Like an elastic string?
Sometimes called Shock-cord.
It doesn't stretch any more than a nylon line
What's it used for?
18:02
Well I'm trying to use it on a robot as a come-along system but I remember it around the house growing up
It could be the cheap clothes line that comes on the "umbrella" dryers.
basically a vinyl wrapped string.
Maybe, as I recall it was but 100% rubber, like a cloth line dipped in rubber almost
ok, that may be it
would it/could it be "textured" basically not slick
have a "rubber" feel
Also, it was always white, the examples I'm pulling up are green
Yeah. The googles aren't loving me today either.
100% plastic like, not a thick as a clothes line, but can stretch and is water resistent
used in crafts like materials
non toxic also, so u can chew on it instead of a pencil if your the kind that chew on pencils while working... :/
Everbilt 1/4 in. x 100 ft. White Braided Nylon and Polypropylene Rope

A: How do I stretch carpet during reinstallation after replacing padding?

mikeBend the offensive nails down, then caulk the gap. Alternatively, fill the gap by caulking into place a strip of durable material. Dry fit first to avoid making a mess.

A: How do I stretch carpet during reinstallation after replacing padding?

mikeRent (or buy) a carpet stretcher. Here is a google search for carpet stretchers.

A: How do I stretch carpet during reinstallation after replacing padding?

mikeScrew down a strip of threshold to span across the gap.

i really need to educate myself on house rules; a person with 554 rep can edit someone else's question then post 3 answers to it? odd...
I'd merge those into a list.
The same user can also criticize folks for the "utter lack of detail in many questions", and then post three answers that lack detail.

Q: Questions intended to SE optimize the OP's private website?

mikeSuppose a user operates their own separate website, say, a photography website. And suppose they include links to it in their stackexchange.com profile. Is there then Search Engine Optimization motivation to post questions here? Why am I asking? I'm baffled by the utter lack of detail in many q...

I think he's talking about the owner of imgur.
@lsiunsuex the problem is that HTML, etc, aren't written by people who know how to write standards (like, say the ITU, etc) so it gets loosey-goosey
and ANSI etc

Damn Heartbreaking letter from a University buddy. (and absolutely not a scam)
"So the bottom line is that I'm sick and I'm asking for help. My family aren't in a position to offer it. This is really humiliating and I'm very sorry to bug you. But let's face it, the best I'm going to do right now is fake it for Samuel and try to get well. I'm a bit helpless and I'm so sorry to turn to you."

He's humiliated.
whats wrong with him
Surprise Gastric cancer.
Went in for what he thought was appendicitis.
Can't work cause of chemo sickness.
what does he need help with
Rent, food. He doesn't have an appt. with social services for 3 weeks.
Maxed out his Credit card. Last week I asked if he needed help and he said no.
There's about 12 of us on the email. We'll scrape it together for him.
humiliation would be if he was a degenerate gambler and blew all his money, knowing he wouldn't be able to work cause of the chemo
asking for help cause life happens isn't humiliation; its life
"Nothing! Unless they are planning to re-do it every 10 years. There is nothing beautiful or timeless about it. It will look dated very soon."
don't hold back now; let us know how you really feel trigger.
19:35
Yeah. I'm a fan of timeless design. I don't want to be knocking down a kitchen or bathroom every decade.
i like it; i like the sinks, i like the open cabinets - colors and open space
But it will look extremely dated once Dusty Rose comes back into fashion.
i better sell soon then; mine will look like a crack house if thats true

so in the generator saga I have a couple of runs of I think 10/3 cable already around the house to various points near the outside
I can hook up 240V/30A power to those, can't I?

2 hours later…
22:57
@Aaron depends on the distance. For 240V/30A, you can go about 110'
to go longer requires larger cable
or lower amperage
The generator has a 240V/30A outlet, so I'm trying to figure out how to install it with the least amount of tearing everything up
I have the old electric dryer hookup (we switched to gas) that I might be able to repurpose
