12:45 AM
hey there @KorvinStarmast

Hullo, how you?

@KorvinStarmast alright here, what's up on your end?

I have your NPC under your control, I hope. I am about to head over to Mother in Law's house. insert sad face here

@BESW just as a quick test, their homepage loads just fine in Chromium over here. I can poke them with SSLLabs
@KorvinStarmast aah

@Shalvenay if you get a chance, open the game and see if you can find and control the NPC. If so, let me know. And now, I go, since one must do one's duty.

12:49 AM
@KorvinStarmast game opened, but I cannot find the NPC in question

1:19 AM
(feel free to pass it their way)

I'm not associated with them in any way, I just follow them on Twitter.

2:01 AM
@BESW ah. just figured you could pass the link along as a twitter reply

Did you know https is not actually a sign of security? It’s actually a signal that the website uses SSL, which can use a number of different encryption protocols, including the null cipher which is basically plain text.

stops with the cyber-geekiness

2:27 AM
The Null Cypher sounds like a great Dan Brown book title

@BardicWizard psh, geekiness is what we do here
@Rubiksmoose "great Dan Brown book" seems like an oxymoron :P
(I'm not being entirely serious, I enjoyed some of those back in the day)

hah! I also did, but I think I'd be a bit more critical of them now

2:45 AM
@V2Blast I read it as "great (Dan Brown book) title" rather than "great Dan Brown book (title)"

@Adeptus Well I stealth edited in the "title" part
:)

3:03 AM
Hi!
How’s everyone? I’m avoiding a discussion on my schoolwork with family
(For reference: I’m doing fine but just would like not to be reminded of the fact that I have 4 tests this week)

I'm trying to find a better font for the WWG cover.
On the bright side I think I found the font for my next project.

Have you tried it in Wingdings?
@BESW woohoo!

This font is nice, but it's too thick for a gold leaf effect and it also overshadows the illustration.

Can you do it just as an outline? I think it's... got an appropriate tone, just the color is intense.
Some image editors let you convert text into the outline automatically.

Hm, that's an interesting idea.

3:22 AM
oh that is a neat idea
It would also make the letters the same basic style as the image, which could be good I guess?

Outlining text is a blind spot for me, I keep forgetting it's a thing I can do.

3:43 AM
I like it a lot!

Urgh the G didn't drop enough.
Otherwise I think it's working okay.
I'm really happy with the 'reflection' gradients.

You want its top to line up with the RIM?

Not quite; it's very subtle but I want the top right corner of the G curve to line up with the top of the R in RIM.
So the G's curve rises up a bit above the acender line but none of its corners do.

Ah.
I think the illustration could also come down a little, to be centered in the available blank space?

I've still gotta add the byline and tagline.

3:54 AM
Ah.

@BESW That works very well I think!

So the relative positions of the different elements are probably gonna have to squash around a little, but I wasn't gonna mess with that until I've got a font that works, because changing the font would mean re-starting all the positioning.
I love that Affinity lets me swap between layout and illustration within the same app. So nice.
I do wish I could figure out a way to use non-rasterized material as a mask...

4:13 AM
Unrelated: I was reading this question and all I can think of is 1. Don’t bother reviving him and 2. Tell him his character concept might be better served by [another option]. Is that enough for an answer?
@BESW wow. So pretty! I’d buy that from a store

@BardicWizard It's hard to know for sure, but this answer might be r🐘.
@BardicWizard Thanks!

See, I’ve known players like this person’s player. My solutions usually involve glaring and a gentle reminder that it’s the player’s own fault for not playing a build that works for the play style they like. Also why is the player playing that way; is it the flavor of it (which is possible to deal with) or the actual mechanics (which requires either a different class or a different play style)?

4:51 AM
Okay, doing one last pass on the text. [adds footnote about using singular they]

5:28 AM
I put up an answer on the question, did I miss anything?

6:00 AM
@BESW good luck!

@BESW Looks great :)

6:48 AM
@V2Blast Thanks!
...I'm still trying to get the gold a little less green.
But also, wrestling Scriverner's compile feature into submission again.

If it was gold on green (instead of on red), then the gold would look less green, no?

Arguably yes, but I don't think I want the bg to be green.

@BESW that's gorgeous

Aw, thanks!
It's kind of amazing how easy a gilt-like is?

You did pretty well with it!

@BESW it's beautiful

It'd be better if I'd made a custom gradient instead of cheating by lifting the luminosity from a pre-made oil-slick filter effect, but there are Perfect projects and there are Finished projects.
@AncientSwordRage Thanks!
It's actually kind of a spiritual revisiting of an old theater poster I did for... Midsummer Night's Dream, I think?
Nope, Twelfth Night.

11:24 AM
@BESW I prefer yours

The Twelfth Night poster is one I made... four years ago now, I guess.

4 years has made all the difference
(the 12th night one is still very good)

12:51 PM
@Someone_Evil I found a question that is almost the problem I was talking about yesterday: rpg.meta.stackexchange.com/q/8238/62294
Is the se4arch function broken for anyone else?
I just searched bonus action and got no results

1:12 PM
@ThomasMarkov I think it's just really bad

its working now
now its giving 7171 results

One of those two numbers is wrong
try [bonus-action]

@RevenantBacon yes, but which one??????

@BardicWizard hopefully both
I think the way the search works is it looks for any questions with the word "bonus" and then also looks for any questions with the word "action", and this site being what it is, "action" probably comes up a lot
You can also use "bonus action" (with quotes) to search up that exact phrase
Which only gives 3,531 results

@DavidCoffron ...on meta

@ThomasMarkov Oh; you linked to two other meta links so I assumed that's what you meant
That's why I was confused because there are only ~7600 total meta posts

There are 27 with the tag outside of meta

Q: Why is [bonus-action] such an underused tag and should we do anything about it?

Thomas MarkovAt time of writing, the tag bonus-action has only 27 questions. Searching "bonus action" (in quotes) yields 3531 results. Is there any benefit to a retagging project here? Do we just try to use it more going forward? Do we even care?

@TheOracle [oof]

actions and bonus-action don't strike me as useful tags

2:09 PM
Honestly, they probably aren't that useful. Most questions that include the phrase "bonus action" aren't asking about the bonus action themselves, and likely have it from a rules text quote like this:
> **Cunning Action**
> Starting at 2nd Level, your quick thinking and agility allow you to move and act quickly. You can take a **Bonus Action** on each of your turns in Combat. This action can be used only to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
Hmmm, markdown isn't working.

@RevenantBacon Multiline.

@ThomasMarkov I found a decent playmat for card games recently, and it's ferret themed, but nothing angry sword related

I have yet to find a suitable bacon-themed playmat

@RevenantBacon implausible

@AncientSwordRage I think you're missing the key phrasing
read that again

Hmmm... nothing says that an Ooze has to be made out of liquid. Couldn't one be made out of bacon?

@Axoren absolutely

A parallel plane of ooze is instead surrounded by infinite solid bacon instead of infinite chocolate.
And there is a troupe of non-native dwarves who have been trapped there, minding it out for sustenance.
Occasionally, they hop over to the primary plane of ooze for a Chocolate Desert.

I'm currently wondering if I can create an adventure time-esque logo but with Ancient Sword Rage... in css

GcL
4:40 PM
@AncientSwordRage I vote for SVG. Then you can style it with css.
I'm also just a big fan of svg images in general. They make my life easier.

@GcL I know how to do the text in css (i.e. I know how to copy and paste an existing example)
I do not know how to program SVGs

So, I just realized that at 17th Level, an option for Warlock is to become a Planetar permanently

@Axoren Do explain, please

True Polymorph
It's available as a Mystic Arcanum

Yeah, but then youre not a warlock. Youre a planetar.

Besides, you'd need to cast 9th Level Dispel, or get lucky on the roll

DC 19 isnt that hard to beat lol
especially with a +5 modifier
or +8 if youre a high level bard

1d20+5 against a DC 19 is still 13 failures on the die.

Can't bards cheese dispel?

4:46 PM
1d20+8 is 50/50

with something like glibness?

@AncientSwordRage OH YEAH
Cuz dispel magic would be a charisma check

How do they cheese it other than Jack of All Trades?

Glibness lets you take a 15 on a charisma check roll

When another creature casts a spell from behind cover, you can kindly ask them to wait until you walk around the cover and use your reaction to cast counterspell.

I cast wish "I wish this battle had never started"

Granted, but your most recent save point was at Level 1.
You and your group enter a tavern.

@AncientSwordRage You are immediately transported to the beginning of the battle, except now one side has red shirts on.

@ThomasMarkov "It is your side."

I love what I’m reading. Thanks for making me laugh before my test.

Honestly, that sounds like someone blew a casting of Wish on a fairly small shopping trip at Only Navy.
9th Level spell, buy 4-6 shirts.
Second player: "I wish we also had matching Jackets."

@AncientSwordRage It's basically a dialect of XML. If you're familiar with HTML or XML, it's pretty simple. E.g. draw a circle

@GcL Oh I'm familiar with SVG, but I've never had a need to delve in
I've definitely done png -> svg to avoid having to have images (I forget why)

@GcL Drawing art with XML by hand is brutal. Like painting a canvas with a paint-wet truck tire. Do you know any editors for SVG?

@ThomasMarkov Why couldn't he be both? Don't crush his dreams like that!

@RevenantBacon >The creature is limited in the actions it can perform by the nature of its new form, and it can't speak, cast spells, or take any other action that requires hands or speech, unless its new form is capable of such actions.

Pretty sure they have both hands and mouths

@RevenantBacon True Polymorph is not Wild Shape.

5:07 PM
It doesnt get his class features though

Only Druid can retain features while shapechanging and only through the use of Wild Shape.
Otherwise, I'd be taking Great Weapon Master at 16 so that I could use it with the Planetar's Greatsword

> The creature is limited in the actions it can perform by the nature of its new form, and it can't speak, cast spells, or take any other action that requires hands or speech, unless its new form is capable of such actions.

@RevenantBacon How does that let me keep my class levels?
All that means is I can't then become a Wizard if I'm polymorphed into a Fish

GcL
@Axoren For small stuff, I just write it. Illustrator and Inkscape are the vector graphics drawing programs I am familiar with.

True Polymorph does not remove class levels, and it never has.
If you get TP'd from an Elf into a Halfling, do you suddenly lose all of your class levels?

GcL
5:10 PM
@RevenantBacon I does if you turn into a millenial /S

@RevenantBacon Then what point is turning a Wizard into a Frog if he can just dispel the spell on himself and return to normal?

> unless its new form is capable of such actions.
Gotta read the whole spell, fellas

@RevenantBacon
https://www.sageadvice.eu/2017/02/12/does-a-wizard-retains-all-his-casting-abilities-class-features-feats-after-casting-true-polymorph/
You're misreading the spell.
> The target's game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the new form. It retains its alignment and personality.

So if I TP'd an Elven Wizard into a Halfling, it would lose all of its spell, and also all of its gear?

It would be a Halfling Commoner
Unless you picked a Halfling Wizard
But that's really sketch
Because you could just True Polymorph into a Level 20 Wizard at Level 17

5:14 PM
Can you pick class levels for it to gain? pretty sure you can't because that would break the game in WAY to many ways
Would the now-halfling wizard be a commoner?
@Axoren Also, this is not official errata

Then how do you contend with :55479531 which clearly states you keep NONE of your character sheet?
This is Spell text
Not Jeremy Crawford's statement
As for what to do about casting TPM on a wizard to turn them into another player race creature, I'd say that you just get an average creature of that race.
You can TPM an Elf Wizard into an Elf (just Elf) and their class levels are gone
Now, they're just another Elf until it's dispelled.

That brings up the question of whether or not they can get new class levels, and also why they suddenly can't do magic anymore

@RevenantBacon They can't do magic because their form doesn't have the spell slots they learned. Spell Slots are part of the creature. You can know spells from being a Wizard, but your body lacks the faculties to get them back. If you then go on an retrain yourself to be a Wizard, your new form could learn to spellcast again if you have Hands and a Mouth

Since wizardry is a learned skill with magic, unlike sorcery, which is innate. And what about Warlocks/Clerics? their magic is granted to the by an outside source, and I can't hardly imagine a deity saying, "yeah, no, you've done something different with your hair, no more spells until you get it fixed"
I disagree

@RevenantBacon "limited to ations of the new form" seems pretty unambiguous to me.

5:21 PM
Spell slots are not inherrent to the creatures form

If you disagree, you're going to have to consolidate your belief with the fact that your Mental Stats are also replaced.
You keep your Personality and your Alignment
That's all it says you're allowed to keep

The planetar statblock doesnt have any of the warlock class features, so it cant use them.

I would argue that class levels are more aligned with your personality than your game statistics

@RevenantBacon Then you will have to consolidate the fact that your character's smarm will never be good enough to give you 9th Level Bard spells before you've done some serious adventuring.
This would also mean players with better personalities would have higher level characters

@ThomasMarkov I gave up on tags XD

5:27 PM
@RevenantBacon Then why is being an X-level spellcaster part of statblocks?
@Medix2 YOURE BACK

CrazkurWhile searching for an answer i found this and this question about counterspelling a Mind Flayer. @ThomasMarkov School and student-teaching have been... a lot; I do still read stuff though
I was not ready for a class where two students showed up, nor a class where nobody had videos, nor a class consisting of Quinn, Kassie, Karen, Kaiden, Kaylee, Kalee, Eileen, Esther, Eizen, Emily, oh, and also Tatum
@ThomasMarkov I have so many Meta [tags] questions bookmarked and if I learned anything, it's that tags are complicated

Let me be more specific: Your character level is based on "experience" which is something you earn by doing things such as "fighting monsters", "interacting socially", and "exploring caves".
In other words, it is literally "your past experiences"

This question discusses what we're talking about.

And as you experience things, you figure out how to do them in a more powerful way/more easily/etc
To quote JC:
> A spell doesn't erase/suppress your memories unless the spell's text says it does.
> When the text of a spell, like polymorph, says you retain your personality after a transformation, that's a terse way of saying, "You're still you, despite the radical changes you undergo."
My standpoint is that your class levels are based on your personality/past experiences, and getting shapeshifted does not remove those past experiences

GcL
5:40 PM
@ThomasMarkov I had a crap experience running a game with a ung-fu panda druid/monk/rogue. It was when 5e just came out and we weren't super clear on how using monk attacks while wildshaped should work. So we made a decision and ran with it. It was a crap decision that nearly ruined combat for the other players.

@RevenantBacon Maybe your deity doesn't recognize you? :)

@MarkWells To be fair, your deity is the one that gave your polymorph.

GcL
Don't let class features cross polymorph boundaries. It tends to outshine everyone else.
2

@ThomasMarkov So that the DM can populate the world with spellcasters. That's what statblocks are for: having a single place to look for everything you need to run an NPC/monster in the game. They're not an ontological statement about the world.

GcL
@MarkWells stat blocks do get referenced as a unit. They're the "game statistics" of a creature.
It does appear to serve as a mechanically relevant term for some spells and abilities.

5:46 PM
@MarkWells Then can I polymorph to look like that high-ranking priest right there and trick a deity into giving me spells?

@RevenantBacon roll a deception check.
With advantage cuz youre polymorphed

I don't know of any statblocks that say this creature is an [x] level fighter or similar

@RevenantBacon There are no such creatures because creatures do not have class levels. However, there are things like "Master Thief" which come pretty close.
You can't polymorph into a specific adventurer, but you can Polymorph into a general creature.

5:49 PM
@Axoren monster spellcasting features seem to have class levels of some kind.

In the Monster Manual is Acolyte, which would be something of the sort of TPMing into a creature and "tricking" god into giving you Spell Levels.

@Axoren Right, so either it is a level [x] rogue, and it's class/level aren't part of its stat block, or no creature in any book has class levels

@ThomasMarkov They have a general rubric by which they have something similar to levels in an adventuring class.
@RevenantBacon No published creature in the entire Bestiary has Class Levels. However, many entries in the Bestiary can cast spells because of what they are, not who they were pre-TPM
