Q: A site user recently unprotected virtually all of our protected questions. Is that okay?

nitsua60[First off, there's no need to name the user, and I'm kinda-glad in this case that I think it'd be relatively hard for anyone but a mod to go back and figure out who. This isn't about the user. I assume they're trying to make the site better like the rest of us, that they never thought to come ch...

Q: Please reprotect the 700 or so questions that were unprotected in the last few weeks

nitsua60Someone recently and quietly unprotected about 700 mainsite questions. (Whether or not one should do that is under discussion here.) Can we re-protect those questions in advance of a broader meta discussion around what should be protected, what guidelines might be put forth for what makes sense t...

@Medix2 I'm actually interested on the how. I am slightly interested on the why as well, but the how got me amazed

How is likely just "looked at the list of protected questions"

@doppelgreener are they not both sub races of gith, just as mountain dwarves and hill dwarves are sub races of dwarves? Or, is this an edition specific thing. I don't have fiend folio in electric form, so I have to wait for later to look at original gith...

D:

I lost my fanatic again

@Medix2 I didn't even know there was a way to filter those, to begin with...

6:16 PM
I'm like 80% sure it's not my fault, though.

I'm also unsure whether this is something that can/should be discussed... messages about it exist in this chat and I am genuinely unsure whether they should

@KorvinStarmast it's like how there's no ape, just varieties of ape

@HellSaint It's in the tools hang on...

@goodguy5 that's a hard badge. I almost lost it once because my city ran without energy for 2 days.

no canidae, just wolves and dogs and foxes and etc

6:17 PM
I had to use 3G and power banks :D
And yes that was my uttermost concern. Logging on SE to get a badge.

@HellSaint What I think happened is that I opened the tab on my phone, but that it was cached and didn't actually send a "ping" to the site to tell it I was there.

@HellSaint Here's a link

@doppelgreener I have this idea that somewhere in AD&D 2e, there's an extended explanation of all of this linked to something in spelljammer ... but I do not have any of those source books anymore.

@Medix2 Oh I see. So finding the protected questions is reasonably easier than doing the opposite job (i.e. finding the questions to protect)

@HellSaint Finding questions that used to be protected is impossible unless SEDE can do some magic and even then you'd have to wait however long for that thing to update, hmmm maybe it actually still lists them as protected,h mmmmmmmmmm

6:20 PM
@goodguy5 nooooo

I think I was on 70

@Medix2 it only updates once a week so that data may still be there

@doppelgreener or maybe it was a planescape thing ....

@Medix2 It definitely would since it updates on Sundays.

but really it ought to be a query the stack exchange staff can run on their end using actual database records rather than SEDE

6:21 PM
But we are in contact with Staff, and they will probably be able to do something way easier than manually doing that.

@Rubiksmoose Gotcha, glad to see that they respond (or at least say that they'll respond) so quickly

@doppelgreener Of course if they did the unprotecting over more than a week's time that method won't be 100% accurate anyways.

That's true

@Medix2 SEDE can actually do some magic that should work here, but it wouldn't give a more than the list, which leaves quite a lot of work

@Medix2 Yup we already got a response that they are looking into it and will get back to us. The CMs are wonderful and hard working people.

6:24 PM
@TheOracle should this be something like feature-request status-review?
having it be discussion/support seems to be addressing us the userbase

I got a list of 720 posts

@Medix2 Cool, I'll ask you not to start doing anything with it until we know more

hot dog!

@Someone_Evil Was already planning on doing nothing but saving it for cross-reference after something is decided upon

Good

6:29 PM
"Planning on doing nothing", sounds like my idea of a good afternoon.

@Yuuki me as well, but Mrs Starmast takes a dim view of my plans when they head in that direction.

@nitsua60 Perhaps worth mentioning somewhere is this deferred (for quite a while) feature request: "Is there a way to see the history of questions protected by me or another user?"

@NautArch I beat you by about 14 seconds

@ThomasMarkov ha!
have an upvote

And our answers are nearly identical
you too buddy :p

6:37 PM
@ThomasMarkov ah, thanks! FYI, there is a badge for that, too :)

Quick, obtain identical user profile images (don't actually do this)

i'm never leaving orko again

@Medix2 What query did you use?

Wait not that one...

@Medix2 I was about to say...

Nice find!
I didn't think about the fact that the database could query unprotection by user...

@Medix2 I have done that once in my career here (unprotect) and four times (protect)

@Rubiksmoose Somebody said it was impossible to find them and I was like "the voodoo magic search box can probably do that"
I'm also confused why searching Meta RPG shows the Main logo and searching Main shows the Meta logo...

@Medix2 Because the context is for you to switch to another site

whats a good accepted answer rate?

6:51 PM
So it shows the meta logo as a suggestion to switch to meta site
@ThomasMarkov On your questions or answers?

@Someone_Evil Oh the little d20 actually switches site, I see

answers

I'd probably go off of score instead of accepted rate because being accepted relies on a specific user returning and happening to like your answer whereas scores reflects a more general consensus

@Medix2 Not just like, but also knowing and bothering to push the accept button

7:36 PM
@Medix2 For me it's not so much that it's impossible to find them, it's that you have to think to look. I don't need to think to look for answers to old questions, or re-tags, because they show up as active. I don't need to look for comments containing a particular cuss, because at least someone gets a ping when the comment's put up. Unprotecting (or a list of other things in the MSE post) don't naturally hit even a second set of eyes.
@ThomasMarkov 105%
=D

@ThomasMarkov that's not a metric I'd try to track. Getting up votes is good. "Accepted" is quite variable depending on the question asker's time, inclination, caffeine level, level of investment ... etc.

SEDE has this query for you. (Be sure to set the site down below, or you'll get a lot of unfamiliar usernames.)
Though, actually, I'm not sure about that query....
Because spot-checking mine I get 47% (208 accepted/442 answers), and it's not there....
Oh, this is only answer counts over 600. Which they don't mention in the summary. (It's the little details.)
Changing that to >=100 gets us some people up into the low 60%, but HICC still stands out impressively at ~59% on their ~2K answers!

7:57 PM
@KorvinStarmast plus it disincentivizes answering questions with an accepted answer

@Yuuki Fair point; I am not sure I grok what SO/SE general policy or philosophy is on answering after an answer is accepted. For sure, some of our answers here, after something new comes out, have notes to show that "the truth has changed, this answer isn't really right any more ...)

While I'm here, let me do some preemptive damage control regarding the question unprotection issue: if this user comes back into chat, please lets try to keep this discussion more on Meta. There's a definite potential for dog-piling in here and there are already several Meta talking about the issue. I just want to avoid having this escalate. I'm not banning the topic or discussion by any means, but I think it might be best to handle this in a controlled, thought-out manner.

I have a response to at least one of the metas on the way.

@Rubiksmoose may i pin this?

Sure.
Hopefully that seems reasonable anyways.

GcL
8:21 PM
@Rubiksmoose Only puppy-piling is acceptable.

@GcL dawwwwwww

How does pinning work? Or is pin another name for the star thing?

Special star by ROs or mods

@Medix2 ROs and mods can put a special star on a message that pins it to the top of the star board.

whats an RO

8:26 PM
Room Owner
Sorry about that :)

Times out of after two weeks(?) and then leaves your star on that message (potentially letting you star your own message)

I was hoping it was something cool like Righteous Orthographer

Oh I see NautArch owns the room, hadn't even thought anybody it tbh XD

@Medix2 I am one of the room owners along with the OG BESW and kviirii

NautArch, Miniman, BESW, and kviiri are the RO's for this and NaB. ROs' names are in italics (blue is diamond mods)

8:36 PM
So many new things I'm learning. Like rooms having multiple owners

Ah, missed miniman!!
Shame on me
Have you heard the stairway to heaven/Gilligan's island mashup?

8:56 PM
@Someone_Evil I thought it actually had a fancy formula that was related... no that's probably just regular stars.

@nitsua60 I think the order of the pinned messages depend on the same fancy fomula, but all pinned are before normal stars

GcL
9:14 PM
Does the fancy formula have one of those tall narrow S looking squiggles? I hear those are integral to a fancy formula.

9:29 PM
Spam answers persist as deleted answers viewable by 10k+ users, right?
With the usual "this answer is spam" edit or whatever it specifically says*

Yes, there's a mask for non-diamond users on spam and answers flagged as rude above IIRC

9:46 PM
Do you have a specific reason for asking?

10:08 PM
@nitsua60 Woohoo - top 5!
My answers are likely to plateau around that level for some time, if not indefinitely, as I started a new job which leaves me with considerably less free time during the working day. :(

Q: Can the area of the additional spell effect of Druid Grove extend outside the area of Druid Grove?

Thomas MarkovThe spell druid grove (XGtE, pg. 154) lists several effects that the caster may impose on the spell's area (30-90 ft. cube). The spell also comes with an "Additional Spell Effect"; this reads: You can place your choice of one of the following magical effects within the warded area: A constant g...

11:01 PM
@Someone_Evil Somewhat but it's probably best left until later. What I'm thinking now is that after whatever happens with the unprotected questions happens, some sort of "When should protected questions become unprotected" question would be useful...
If I should go over to Not a Bar or just nowhere that's understandable. I think I'm just seeing that what's happened had surprisingly few signs pointing to it being a bad thing in the first place

@Medix2 I agree we need to talk about it, and let's just leave that as in-the-works for now? :)

@Someone_Evil :thumbsup:
I just misread that as thumb-sup somehow....

11:18 PM
@Rubiksmoose Oooh, that's an awesome series. I'd hardly call it "traditional" anything, especially as it goes along.
It's being made into a TRPG by Green Ronin, I'm tentatively excited.
@Yuuki That's kind of the origin story for the Noble Cousins in The Thousand Cousins; they're the cousins of the ruling class closest to ground zero of the magical cataclysm which scattered all the cousins.
"Solo" is a collection of games on itch..io that are specifically for only 1 player, curated by rmangus.
Area Zero One by Sohkates is a Modern Existential Horror Incursion for Trophy Gold.
@Medix2 Whoever makes a room is automagically its owner. Elected moderators from any site can appoint and un-appoint extra room owners, as can existing room owners (including un-appointing themselves).

@BESW So a room could be owner-less?

If a room's only owner resigns, or the only owner of a room is absent from the room for a few months, the most active user of the room is automagically made RP. That's how I got ownership of this room
Sep 14 '13 at 13:11, by Feeds
BESW has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)
Recently, I asked the moderators to help me identify some other people to approach to be co-ROs, which I super appreciate.

11:34 PM
@BESW Some sort of fancy "most active" algorithm, neat. 2013?! Glad to see you're still here, I'm honestly gladly surprised when seeing users who've been here for quite a few years, and they certainly help inform me on the things I've missed

You can see the list of current ROs on the access tab of the room's info page.

Was not expecting to see not one but two names I don't recognize

I joined the site in 2012, about two years after it first opened in beta.
Hmm. Should probably clean that up a bit. Brian's absence is what got me appointed.
He burned out as moderator and hasn't been back since.

And the explicit write access person is from years ago when we wanted to help somebody who didn't have 20 rep yet.

11:39 PM
Automatically created rooms from moving/continuing comments don't have ROs starting out AFAIK, but I'd assume they were automatically appointed should the room live long enough

Q: Can I wield Spiritual Weapon in my off hand to mimic two weapon fighting?

Sam LacrumbSpiritual weapon says: You create a floating, spectral weapon within range... ...As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the weapon up to 20 feet This is purely for aesthetics I understand I am actually giving up some of the combat advantage of having a weapon that can move 20' as a bonus ...

@Medix2 Heh, happy to help people out. For a system with the stated goal of being a well-sorted collection of solutions to problems, the Stack's own internal documentation is awful.
