@Rubiksmoose Slow mode on Discord means that unless you're an admin (or have a role with the Manage Channel or Manage Messages permissions), you can only send one message, and then have to wait the set amount of time before you can send a new message. (You can still edit your existing message(s) in that channel while you're waiting.) More info: support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/…

@Ben In vino veritas, so I decline on this occasion.

@nitsua60 I'm in a ton of servers, but I just don't read most of them, and I don't actively participate in the ones where there are a hundred new messages in a channel within half an hour.

Ben
@KorvinStarmast mine comes from sleep.
But, I wouldn't say "truth" per se. Just crazy ideas

@NautArch Yes. :P

Q: Planning to use 1 arrow to hit a second target if it misses the first target

MikhailI've read a lot about "shooting the other enemy" and how enemies don't occupy the entire 5ft square; however what I can't find is the following scenario: I intentionally position my character to have a straight line with two enemies. I'm aiming for the first one but in case it misses I want my...

WE also had our first game of No Thankyou Evil! on the weekend with the boys. They youngest (6) got bored near the end, and decided not to play anymore, but the eldest (8) really enjoyed it.
We think it's great for both creativity and imagination in them both, and potentially help with focus and problem solving too :D
Thanks again for the suggestion @BESW!

Are you going to change anything up for 6 next time?
You're welcome, I'm glad it's good for you!

Q: How long does it take a wizard to change just one of their prepared spells?

IzzySuppose my 10th-level wizard wakes up from a good night's rest and, using all 20 points of his Intelligence, he realizes that he needs to change his spell list a little. It's time to retire Magic Missile, and prepare Fireball instead. The other 14 spells (with a combined spell level total of, say...

Ben
@BESW I think since it was the first game, I was a bit rusty, and managing it wasn't overly smooth. I think once we get into the groove of it things will change, and we told him about the fun and development he missed out on, so fingers crossed he'll be able to stay a bit more focused next time.

Maybe a shorter play time would help?

Ben
Could also use character cut outs and do a map for the visual element
@BESW Oh it was very short already. the only reason it took more than half an hour was cos it was everyone's first time.

2:01 AM
Ah, okay.
A very broad and your-mileage-may-vary rule of thumb is that a pre-adolescent kid's attention span is three to five minutes per year of age, so half an hour may be pushing it a bit for a six-year-old. But kids don't generalize well and you know your kid's attention span.
Familiarity definitely bumps up attention capacity though.

(unrelated to above conversation)

Ben
Yeah. We tried the "everyone has a turn; then move on to the next bit", which did work well, but I think if anything the only reason he lost interest (which was just right to the end) was because not much really happened?

@Ben When my youngest was 5-6 and the kids wanted to do (age-appropriate) RPGing, she and I would sometimes play her character "together." That way she could have (from her perspective) a lot of daddy attention, she could wander or come back, and we could play as long as the two bigger siblings liked.

Ben
The "Queen Bee" sent a letter to help find her friend. She explained what he's like (what he looks like, how he behaves). They arrived at "dragon snot falls", they asked about the odd device (small puzzle, and everyone had a go at puzzle solving and dodging out of the way of the water). Spoke to the fortune telling frog, investigated the cave (6 year old left) they saved their friend then headed back home.

Ummm. Content warnings: cartoon blood, gore, death, sudden loud music.

Ben
Hmm. Fair.
Feel free to take it down

3:33 AM
@Ben How's it going? Did that corruption system of yours ever see the ... well not exactly light of day but you know what I mean?

Ben
It is slowly getting there.
Had a lot of changes in life lately so I haven't really had much time to work on it

Oh dear. I have.... News.
D&D news.
I'd like to call it good news, but I can't imagine any world where it's actually good news, and I'd like to call it bad news, but it's so low stakes (and yet high stakes!) I feel like it would set the wrong tone.
The campaign my Barbarian was in ended after we returned the Lizardfolk's ancestral home back to them, and one of the players announced he was starting a new campaign and invited us all in.

So I went to him and asked if I could bring my "Sorcerer that pretends to be a Fighter" character to that campaign.

And... for some terrifying reason, he said yes. 😳

@Xirema Surely that can only be a good thing if that is what you wanted. What level will you start at?

@linksassin Level 5. And it's important to understand that things I want are very rarely good for anyone other than myself. 😜

@Xirema That's a possibly concerning self-effacing statement.

3:46 AM
At any rate, I've tuned the character as much as I'm able. She gets 6 spells and 2 metamagics, so I've picked up haste and mage armor to give herself the AC and # of attacks of a fighter, and subtle spell so that there's no evidence when she casts spells (provided they don't cause other visible effects).

Do the stats actually work out alright? I'm planning to have a high level sorcerer BBEG hide in the party as a low level fighter in my campaign at the moment.

@linksassin Well, she rolled a natural 17 for dex, so with Drow, that's bumped up to 19 and then at some point she'll get the extra +1 ASI to get that up to 20 (for her level 4 ASI I instead gave her the War Caster feat to improve Concentration checks).
It would be very bad if haste wore off in the middle of a fight. 😜

Probably still likely to happen fairly often.
How are you going to play off not attacking for the round you are casting your buffs?

@linksassin On a normal hit, it's a ~6% chance, since +5 Con Saves with Advantage rolls 10+ the rest of the time.

Or as you going to quicken every time?

3:50 AM
@linksassin I pull out a Light Crossbow, and excuse it by pointing out that crossbows only permit one attack per attack action if you don't have the feat.

@Xirema How long do you think you can keep up the ruse?

I think it'll last 30 minutes into the first session before something goes wrong.
I am going to turn the Drow sunlight sensitivity into a boon though. Since I'll already have Disadvantage on attack rolls in sunlight, no one will think it's weird if, when I equip a shield in sunlight, I'm attacking with Disadvantage (Sorcerers do not have Shield Proficiency)
I do have to drop the shield if I actually want to cast spells, but it doesn't impede concentration.

@Xirema Doesn't War Caster mean you can cast with your hands full? Or does the lack of proficiency negate that?

@linksassin Yeah, Armor Proficiency says "if you don't have proficiency, you can't cast spells".
Now, personally, as DM, I've ruled in the past that stuff like subtle spell can override stuff like that, but that's not RAW, and I can't assume any other DM would permit that.

I probably would allow it too. You're already playing a suboptimal build no point to nerf it further.

Q: How much time does putting an item inside a Bag of Holding take when you are fighting?

Verdict00In the Bag of Holding's (Dungeon Master's Guide pag. 248) description it is stated: Retrieving a specific item from a bag of holding is a move action — unless the bag contains more than an ordinary backpack would hold, in which case retrieving a specific item is a full-round action. We've had spam promising to turn you into a vampire or a werewolf.
We haven't had spam promising to turn you into a mermaid before.

@nitsua60 That's more concise. It's also the kind of "discussion prompt" that I think the question are intended to be.

What's the blasted starting wealth for TL5 and TL6 in GURPS? Haven't got book handy.
Just a long shot.

@A.B. Give me a minute.
@A.B. 5k for TL5, 10k for TL6.

Brilliant! And that's the literal wealth ignoring the dreaded 80/20 rule, right?

Yeah, that's the default full value.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I guess Hollywood is completely out of ideas; all they seem to do anymore is make previous movies ...
@doppelgreener For some reason, that didn't cheer me up. :-p

I'm trying to determine whether or not I should introduce someone to Dungeon World GM moves in the question about formula

@Powerdork Do they translate to 5e?

@KorvinStarmast kind of a toxic outcome of the hollywood business @_@ it's wild to consider

@KorvinStarmast I tend to look at it more like they produce what we ask for. Same with the issue with the quality of news reporting.

thinking out loud about it: Movies are a vessel for investors to make money. To make money you gotta have a great movie people want to see, which costs a lot of money, but the more you invest the more you might stand to get back, so big expensive movies are the order of the day. But with all that money on the line you don't want to be gambling on random avant-garde experiments: you need a reasonable guarantee your movie will succeed and make money!
How do you know for sure your movie will succeed? You make one that's like another successful movie! That way you know for sure people will definitely like that kind of thing and will probably also like your thing.
And nothing's more like another successful movie than an outright remake of that successful movie!

1:19 PM
@NautArch They're fairly generic, since Dungeon World is generally about the fiction. "Give an opportunity that fits a class's abilities", "show a downside to their race, class, or equipment", "offer an opportunity, with or without cost", "reveal an unwelcome truth"...

And now we've got just over a century of cinematic history to recreate.

1:35 PM
@doppelgreener And yet a move like Flashdance stands that idea on its head. So too the surprising commercial success of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ

Q: My Question is What DnD 5e build (with minimum number of combined levels over all classes) is needed to summon all summonable monsters

user2617804The question is totally answerable if you consider the question as given and not try to make say something it doesn't like what class do want, do you want use all summoning spells, summon all monster.. Here is a possible solution using DnD Core only. Given Summoning is kind of vaguely defined in D&

@doppelgreener No plastic tail needed hot dang!

1:55 PM
@Rubiksmoose correct! they will issue you with a latex one instead. That's premium!

hahaha
I also never realized that part of the deal with being a mermaid was summonable riches.

@Rubiksmoose Wait, you never head of the deal? When the mermaid king tells the boy 'Stay with us, you'll be our king', and then the mermaid princess or whatever sings about all the sunken ships with gold, emerald and rubies falling like rain onto the sea floor on demand?

2:12 PM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I legitimately have not!
^This has to be my new favorite thing though

@Rubiksmoose The full version may include some more such things.

@KorvinStarmast That bladesinger comment would be a good answer

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica Man, I love some of the animation they do. With the shrinking of the boy by putting him on a far away island eg.

Oh me oh my we're having an election?
This is certainly something.

Well we heard things weren't nearly exciting enough right now, so we decided to mix things up a bit ;-)

2:22 PM
MOAR CHAOS PLZ

@Rubiksmoose Have you considered asking for permission to have a Venetian style election? Y'know, one of those very organically developed convoluted series of random draws and votes iterated so the process is too complex to game?

@NautArch I'm trying to get my number of "interrupted while in the middle of {small, mundane, seemingly-simple-to-complete task}" events up into triple-digits daily. Maybe that'll help my sanity... :crazy_eyes:

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, while both North Atlantic and Caucasian animation traditions have their share of 'made while on weird chemicals' cartoons, but I find the latter more inclined towards almost Escher-inspired metamorphoses. See also the talking fish, which is probably even more extreme in the weird transformations.

(Except, it turns out, people who want to game a system are generally more motivated to find gaps to abuse than the rest are to find gaps to fix, so they totally gamed it)
@nitsua60 Hey, I'm glad you're taking the time to relax. You've been a great mod! I hope you still pop up every now and then ^^
I also still feel oddly warm about the time when you told me your students liked the Birb cam :3

@nitsua60 Yeah, there's a limit to what we can do right now. Good thing one of my wife's coworkers just gave notice and her role has been added to my wife's.
:(

2:34 PM
@kviiri hah! Maybe we could add some (appropriately distanced) combat as well!

I love weird political structures (in fiction, mainly)

@kviiri Did I ever tell you that my office mate and I grabbed a spare monitor, bought a wall-mount, and slaved it to display the Lithuanian (or was it Estonian?) eagles? It was, like, the highlight of that spring around the math department.
(Dept. head got a little pissed--reasonably--about us mounting a fire-code violating structure in the hallway....)
@kviiri I'll definitely be around. I might even start answering questions again! (My activity dropped off precipitously after the election. Though, TBF, I don't know how much of that was being attentionally drawn away by mod-stuff vs. being less interested in the last few years' 5e stuff they've been releasing. I guess we'll see!)

@nitsua60 Yes you did! I think
Estonian, they were

:54286664 Oh, just the fact that it wasn't perfectly surface-mounted, but on one of those arms you can move around. So it was an "obstruction" in case of a fire.

@nitsua60 A monitor violated the fire code?
@nitsua60 ahhhhh

2:42 PM
I mean, it totally is the sort of thing that if there had been a fire and somebody bumped it and it swung out a little the next person could totally clock themselves, but.... =)

@NautArch It might be; the asker did make some comment about not being a different sub class, I need to go and check again. As I don't have my DDB access in front of me, I have to wait until later to flesh one out.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I've got this song good and stuck in my head now. It was an enjoyable watch too!

@NautArch one of these days, I need to get DDB app onto my phone.

@KorvinStarmast I wonder if it is any good yet...
(I usually just use the site on my phone when needed, I haven't opened the app for a long time)

@KorvinStarmast I haven't tried it in awhile, but it was not what I was expecting. Using it through the phone browser was MUCH better.

@Atriace Ignorance is bliss?

I don't believe so. The ignorant are blissfully unaware of their sad state. Knowledge is good. :)

@Atriace Welcome! I think that question is stackable after we narrow it.

@NautArch OK, I just need to use my Twitch password, which is not yet committed to memory.

I was about to ask what region/environment it was in. I did make some edits to your question to help focus it.

3:04 PM
Probably just easier to spit ball here until something suitable is found.

@KorvinStarmast password managers, my man :P

As Someone_Evil pointed out, I wasn't really looking for a authoritative answer, but rather more of a discussion.

GcL
How about a dragon? nah. How about a hag? nah ... thank kind of thing

@NautArch I am a very old school person on that matter ... paranoia ...

@KorvinStarmast For me, I feel safer because I can have very secure passwords hidden behind a single secure password. I only have to remember one andcan make all the others incredibly secure.

3:06 PM
@NautArch my son agrees with you that's how he does it.

@Atriace Do you have a specific environment it should fit into?

@KorvinStarmast That way I don't have to reuse passwords, either. WHich was normally my go-to.
@doppelgreener If the question narrows to the environment and lore about monsters that eat cattle, would that be narrow enough?

And Large aren't really roof-tearing big (I think cows are Large?), so maybe only the upper two sizes

I was looking through the Roll20 Monsters List (roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Monsters%20List?sort=Type#content). I had assumed the monster should be at least the height of a house to be able to rip off a roof with ease.
And yeah, Huge or Gargantuan would fit

@Atriace Creature size and creature height are two different things. Size is more about the 'space they control'.

3:09 PM
@Atriace yes, huge or gargantuan. Mammoth or Mastadon Sized?
TRex is old faithful for monsters bigger than a house ...

Good point. I suppose I was thinking only in terms of height. Furthermore, something like a Bulette (while "huge") would not work on account of being a quadraped, with no opposable thumbs.

@KorvinStarmast Your lore knowledge is pretty good, do most monsters eat cattle, or do you think that's something talked about regarding specific ones?

DDB search for Huge or Gargantuan, btw

@Someone_Evil: I'll check it out, thanks.

@NautArch I seem to recall that the Big dinosaurs can eat cattle, and giant crocs do eat them, but more later ...

3:11 PM
@Atriace And if you have an environment, you can continue to narrow.

Well... it was supposed to be a peaceful farming town out of the way from most dangers.

@Atriace If you need more ddb access, you can get it

Ergo the thought that it was a traveling monster in search of its next meal.

Ankhegs!

@Atriace Right, but mountainous, grassland, etc. etc.

3:12 PM
Plus Sized Anhkegs one size larger than usual?

Mountains surrounding a grassland, perhaps?

If you relly want to make it a big deal, just go Tarrasque.

They would eat cattle

Are good ol' giants out of the question?

Heck, an adult dragon or a Wyvren would east live stock ...

3:13 PM
I was afraid of that. Seems cliche if you have to use a Tarrasque, but it would technically work.

Giants need cattle for their BBQs also ....
They just need more of them

@Atriace So you can select Mountaiin/grassland/hill to further narrow your search.

And IIRC a Behir is big enough to live in a mountain and eat cows

A giant could work, but its a bit list "monstery" than I was hoping for.
I'll try the filters...

Behir's environment doesn't seem great "Behirs lair in places inaccessible to other creatures, favoring locations where would-be intruders must make a harrowing climb to reach them. Deep pits, high caves in cliff walls, and caverns reached only by narrow, twisting tunnels are prime sites for a behir ambush"

3:15 PM
You can take a Lion/Tiger and make it huge sized. Mod the lion to huge that way a giant crocodile is boosted from regular crocodile.

Cyclops? Roc?

ROc is a very good choice.
I wanna Roc

@Atriace Do you have to stick with the pre-existing list of monsters? You could pick something with a stat-block you like, except gargantuan, and re-skin it

@kviiri: You're probably right.
@Someone_Evil: A cyclops is probably closer to what I had in mind. A bipedal, cattle eating monster.

@Atriace That said, I totally understand if you don't want to do that. Some players, even if a minority, might consider it cheating x)

3:18 PM
Though I think I was hoping for jagged teeth and claws. Perhaps something in the reptilian category.

@Atriace Behir

@Atriace T Rex?

@Atriace Are you looking for something natural like a Beast or something else?

what CR are you looking for?

lol, I'm still amazed 5e has dinosaurs. And a t-rex... with its tiny little arms... so funny.

3:19 PM
Take a giant crocodile and reskin it as a mountain lizard. CR 5. Replace swimming speed with something else.

@KorvinStarmast No specific CR. Players won't fight it, it's purely a story element.

Checking out the Behir...
No CR rating planned. It's a supposed to be a believable background story element, not a party faced opponent.

Giant Gila Monster (Reskinned Giant Croc) Crocodile Huge beast, unaligned Armor Class 14 (natural armor) Hit Points 85 (9d12 + 27) Speed 30 ft STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA 21 (+5) 9 (−1) 17 (+3) 2 (−4) 10 (+0) 7 (−2) Skills Stealth +5

Multiattack. The gila monster makes two attacks: one vwith its bite and one with its tail.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 5) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is rest

@NautArch In fact, creature height is pretty much completely undefined in the rules right?

@Rubiksmoose pretty much. It's in stat blocks, but it has zero relation to their size or range.

3:21 PM
@Rubiksmoose I think it is only defined for PC

Wow... Behir is definitely in the category I was hoping for. But it's more of a lizard than a biped. Hmm...

You can make it like those Japanese lizards that run on their back legs?

The water walkers?

(Forgetting the name ....)

3:23 PM
Something like that, but water walking not necessary

@Atriace I knew the guy who filmed that :)
TIL about that - it wasn't filmed in the wild

@NautArch: Wow! Small world. :)
They're called Basilisk Lizards, it seems.

@Atriace sadly, he was murdered

:(

@NautArch oh.... :'(

3:30 PM
@Rubiksmoose Yeah, he was a really nice guy.

It would be so nice if I could say "it's this standard 5e creature. Totally copacetic." The group I'm in doesn't take well to non-standard/homebrew content.
That said, forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Bluespawn_godslayer seems to be very close to the kind of image I had in my mind.

@Atriace wait, what?

It's huge, its carnivarous, and reptilian.

@Atriace "Gargantuan Chicken." "What!?" "What. A wizard did it."

But it seems to not be in 5e.
lol

3:33 PM
"There's wizards in 5e."
=D

@Atriace You can make your own monster, see DMG, the players don't get a vote. And that was part of the fun in old TSR editions; custom mnosters galore.

Ergo the "reskin" approach.
Okay. Hey! Thanks everyone for your input. I am grateful that you took the time to give me advice and point me to this information.
This has been invaluable.

@A.B. Oh hey, you have GURPS questions and you're asking for where to find less introspective RPs? Have you already checked out the unofficial but very vibrant GURPS Discord and its LFG channel (and attached sheet listing games, many of which seem to be more 'so what you do'-oriented)?

@Atriace Best wishes with your Giant Gila Monster! 8^D
@Atriace Or you can call it a mountain croc .. and your players will say ... What a Crock! 8^D

@KorvinStarmast and now I want whataburger

3:39 PM
@NautArch I had one for lunch yesterday. Yummy, and all of the employees had on gloves and masks ... take out for the win!

@KorvinStarmast nice! Get the grilled jalapenos on it?

@NautArch yes, and grilled onions. My wife thinks that capauscin will help prevent coronia. OK, fine.
Capsaiscin

4:08 PM
Oh, man. The weight of it's hitting me....
I'm not going to be able to go back and edit comments/chat outside the standard windows anymore.
That really is the super-nice perk about the diamond.

Yeah, the edit lock on comments is a bummer.

@nitsua60 So probably should be afforded to others as well.
Nice things that make life nicer should probably be more widely available.

@KorvinStarmast You put it on your hands as a reminder not to touch your face.

@MarkWells At least you'll remember after the first time lol

not necessarily :P

I sense you are speaking from experience here lol

maybe :P

1 hour later…
5:39 PM
I never know quite what to do about role-playing things where the sane and logical response is "no", but that would be the end of the scene. I usually just say "yes" and hang logical. You know what I mean? What do other people do about it? You come up with anything more advanced than I have?

@A.B. not sure i understand.
If my character would say no, i usually sayno.

@A.B. I'm not sure that an RP situation that can effectively be interacted with by only saying "no" would be a particularly good one. I'm not even sure how one might go about doing that TBH.
Are you talking about a "no" in the same sense as the improv "yes, and..."? If so, how does this "no" manifest usually?
Perhaps you giving a short example might help us understand better what you mean.

In a free-form RP channel, my character, who got teleported to the strange inter-dimensional city the previous day and has already been warned to "be careful out there, this can be a dangerous place", got chatting to a stranger in the street. After a bit of conversation (turns out they both worked for secret paranormal agencies, in their different eras), other character invites her back to her place for coffee. What do.
@nitsua60 :-)
Of course, it is true that, as a newbie, she probably has nothing worth stealing.

@A.B. That seems to be related more to fully-freewheeling improvisational circles than many traditional RP circles. In fact, only less than a week ago, a player on my commented preferring traditional RP specifically because it sees saying 'no' (for logical reasons) as much more acceptable.

5:55 PM
@A.B. So they told you it was a dangerous place. And the first thing you do chat up a stranger. Who then wants to take you back to their place.
I think "no" is a very reasonable response.

Hmm, I wonder why. Perhaps because the session is expected to go on, whether or not you say "no" to one thing - you can expect the GM's response to be to start on something else, rather than "OK, end of scene, see you next time".

In fact, "yes" would not make sense at all. And talking to a stranger doesn't even really make sense unless your character is incredibly naive.

Or "No" plus a counter-offer, if you want some thread to continue but in a different way

@MikeQ I keep picturing the stranger driving up in a windowless van before the conversation begins.

When my players are presented with an opportunity and decline, my immediate next question is usually to ask what they intend to do instead.

5:59 PM
I suppose also it's easier to do that in a non-free-form game, since the GM has unlimited characters and stuff at their disposal, whereas in free-form it's usually you with your one character and another player with their one character, and if you can't keep them together then that has to be the end of the scene.

@A.B. I disagree, and I think @mikeq nailed it. THe conversation continues as to why would that be a good idea in the environment you're in. The "no" opens up more conversation.

Exactly, in this set-up no "what do you do instead" is possible, if you stick to the "one character and nothing else" convention.
That is true.

But I still don't understand why you'd even start talking with a stranger in a dangerous place.
That seems weird.

Actually, it occurs to me I do have an excuse.
Same problem, I suppose. What the heck else am I supposed to do?

It's like the adage of if you're traveling and a stranger comes up and tries to interact with you, you should immediately get away.
@A.B. Dunno. Not my world :)

6:03 PM
And not my world either, hence I can't just go making up what I see willy-nilly, I only joined the channel a few days ago and don't know the limits yet.

Personally if I was the player here, I'd offer to move the conversation to a more favorable location, in case this character leads to some benefit. So maybe invite them to meet with your friends. That way, in case it's a trap, you'll have allies.

THey don't tell you anything more about the world or your place in it?
just that "it's dangerous"?

After the channel had been empty all day, somebody posted "So-and-so walks into the street and enjoys the sunshine", and I pounced.

I guess the problem is your desire to actually engage with the issue that the world was told to be dangerous to engage with.
Why would your character pounce in this world? I know why you would, but why your character?

Oh, there's a wiki and such about the setting. But it hardly seems fair to just make up the entire thing by myself, to say nothing of if I'd wanted to do the entire thing unaccompanied I needn't have joined a channel.

6:08 PM
@A.B. I'm not familiar with these, but it seems like you are making decisions as you rather than as a character in a setting.

What I'm looking for is any way of making at least some nod to realism that doesn't entail not playing at all.

@Medix2 It seems like you want to be an average Medix. But an average Medix is a human, not a medix. At least I think :)
@A.B. So let's step back - what's your character doing in this world?

Got mysteriously teleported there, like I said.
This is the usual thing for this setting.

ah, okay
so you see a stranger, you know it's dangerous, and the first thing you do is initiate conversation?

It's populated by a weird mishmash of people from all eras and even universes.

6:12 PM
Is that something your character would do?
if so, then it's fine. You're playing your character. But how naive are they? Are they so naive that they're willing to go back to the other player's house? If so, then say yes. If not, then what would they do?

As a general rule for characters - whether they're my character or a player's character - No matter how passive or cautious they are, they have to do something and engage in the world in some way.
And if an opportunity isn't immediately visible, then try making one up.

@MikeQ True, but there are lots of ways to engage. In this case, observing may make more sense. Maybe they get caught observing. Maybe they go into the store once they've returned inside. Maybe they stare because they're still amazed to be here and the other character engages.

Yep, observing counts as engaging. As does talking with other player characters.
One of the cool parts of collaborative storytelling is that you can create stuff by trying to observe it.

Well, to be exact, she met another character when she arrived, who took her to an inn that makes a point of taking in new kids, and lent her the money for a night's stay. His advice then - "I think there is merit in exploring, if for no other reason then it would be a way to earn money for another night." His advice on her meeting him in a shop the next day - "It's a bit dangerous out here, so, try to be careful".
Should possibly tell said character to buck up his ideas.

That would have been helpful info :)
But still, what is your character's goal right now? Is it to find a way to make some money?

6:23 PM
Maybe your character invents a social media platform to help lost adventurers reconnect with friends from their homeworlds. And network with adventurers of shared interest from different worlds. And post pictures of cats.

Made another move now, anyway, without either immediately leaving, openly insulting them, or accepting their invitation.

@NautArch Maybe fixed my question now?

@Medix2 yeah, looks good. Writing up an answer...and also stopping writing an answer. Because i'm not sure how it would end up working.
I'm firmly on the side of, let's say Yan-C-Bin. You pick him as your creature and CR. But the average Yan-C-Bin is an average elemental. But then it isn't CR 18.
So i dunno,.

6:41 PM
Isn't average Yan-C-Bin just... Yan-C-Bin?

If anybody wanted a chance to play a Magpie RPG (Masks, Urban Shadows, etc.), now's a good chance! Magpie has expanded their Curated Play program so you can play with a DM selected by the company. One shots and campaigns available it looks like. magpiegames.com/curated-play
If I wasn't actually running Masks right now, I'd be very tempted honestly.

@Medix2 I notice this part of shapechange: "you must have seen the sort of creature at least once". It's not exactly spelled out but it implies that you get to choose a "sort of creature", not a specific one.

@Medix2 I think creature is a type (like elemental) not an instance (like Yan-C-Bin)

@MarkWells I will probably edit that bit into my question

(The alternate interpretation would be that if you've seen any air elemental ever, you can turn into Yan-C-Bin, and I think that's really silly.)

6:49 PM
@NautArch So what does an average monstrosity look like then?

@Someone_Evil See, that's the problem, "creature type" already means something different.

@Someone_Evil monstrous? :D
but yeah, i dunno.

So shapechange can't say "choose a type of creature"

I think as a DM, I wouldn't allow specific, but that's just me.

and has to dance around it with language like "sort of creature"

6:50 PM
Or maybe, you've got the stats, but don't look like it

(though I'm sure there's a wizard somewhere who's tried sticking all the kinds of monstrosities in a blender and making an Average Monstrosity)

@MarkWells It sounds like that would be an ooze at that point

fun fact, this is how Monster the energy drink was invented

Q: What is the origin of the term 'quantum ogre'?

TiggerousAs I understand it, a 'quantum ogre' is a piece of game content that the party will be unable to avoid encountering. It's a way of saving on prep time for the game master but that subtly removes player agency. For example: when the party comes to a fork in the road, will they go left or right? ...

7:18 PM
Hmm, it seems kind of stupid that a ghost that basically can't do anything has such a high point value in GURPS.
Much higher than a human.
Can that be right?

A great spy, insubstantial and presumably invisible.

True. And it's not completely can't do anything, I've got it as "Insubstantial - Usually On". Meaning he could materialise for a few seconds in an emergency.
Still seems odd, though. I'm statting out an old character from a role-playing site I used to use, for practice. (The same one there was all that discussion about what forum they could move to.) And it seemed startling that when I went on to the ghost version of him, his point total suddenly went up that much! :-D

@A.B. Consider lowering ST.

Incidentally, he has one feature that I haven't added yet - he's bound to a bottle and has to go back in if somebody puts the lid on. What would that be?
That's true. That would work, if you needed the points - it would hardly ever come up.

7:35 PM
@Medix2 Philosophy
=D

And I think that would be perfectly consistent with how he used to be written. I don't remember him ever doing anything that would require the full strength he had when alive - in fact I don't entirely remember whether he ever was seen physically interacting with anything at all, I'm just erring on the side of caution.

@A.B. Other things to consider are Wealth (unless ghosts can hold property in the setting), and maybe even a Social Stigma. Though I don't remember whether ghosts technically qualify for Social Stigma (Dead).

7:46 PM
I clean forgot, I was going to do that. I'd say there ought to be a Social Stigma of some description, anyway, it's a setting with a fair amount of supernatural stuff but it's definitely still a setting where most people he approaches will scream.

@A.B. So probably (Monster) [-15] or a custom analogue.
You can also consider Supernatural Features for the time you turn off Invisibility.
Though . . . SF is iffy if you already took SS (Monster).

8:04 PM
@A.B. GURPS point values are arbitrary nonsense; in other news, sky remains blue, water wet, Pope still Catholic.

8:20 PM
Why did I embark in a new campaign? I'm terrible at rolling Pathfinder characters T_T

8:41 PM
me too
the sheer amount of options is frightening
knowing a statistically significant portion of them are trap options makes it all the more so

@A.B. Being familiar with these kind of games, I'd suggest something along the lines of roleplaying your worries and straight out telling this other character "Sorry, but I don't think I can trust you that much yet. What about..." and maybe go to a pub or to some other place.
@doppelgreener Right now it's "which kind of weapons do those people in the setting use?" (I have a partial answer, I know what they use for hunting, not for fighting wars, but it's probably the same) and "Is there any chain of feats I should plan on taking?" I can take things that are individually strong, but I have no idea of the synergies.
