@KorvinStarmast you can tuna fish or tuna piano, but you can’t tuna mimic...

@BardicWizard true, but to mimics taste like tuna, or like chicken? To further confuse the issue, when I was a kid there was a brand of canned tuna called "Chicken of the Sea" that didn't taste like chicken ...

@KorvinStarmast I’d respond with a pun about mimics, but it’d be bad form

hehehe, Russia, table has you for dinner ... (presuming mimics are all from Minsk ...)
That's a riff off of an old Yakov Smirnov gag ...

8:37 PM
@KorvinStarmast they are either a san Diego company or had an office out there.

@NautArch My brother and I once entered into a contest where you send in two 'proofs of purchase' and something else, and you get a football. Yeah, an NFL, regulation, leather football with a chicken of the sea logo on it. It came in the mail like a month later. The promotion was from a local newspaper.

@KorvinStarmast For some reason, I thought they got bought out by Bumblebee

Mom didn't like the tuna, she preferred some other brand, but Dad supported our effort: free football, and it lasted for years of games of catch
I think my younger brother (six years younger) still had it his senior year in high school .

@KorvinStarmast haha, nice! I just remember seeing it on a building a back in 2007 or so.

if anything, "Bumblebee" is an even more confusing name for tuna than Chicken of the Sea, which at least acknowledges that the product is from a marine vertebrate

Q: Does learning the same spell from different sources allow it to benefit from bonuses from all sources?

CyanicFor example, an Arcana cleric takes Firebolt with Arcane Initiate, then multiclasses with Artillerist artificer, and also takes Firebolt as one of the Artificer cantrips. Assuming this character has 5 levels as an Artillerist and 8 levels in Arcana Domain, would casting Firebolt through an Arcane...

2 hours later…
10:35 PM
@MarkWells It was the name of one of the boats of the company's original fishing fleet.

Ben
How is we all today

Grumpy! Client's editor is not impressing.
y'allself?

@Ben drowning in homework since I kinda put off studying for a test and now I’m cramming. And you?

Ben
11:15 PM
That doesn't sound fun
I am yet to get to work, and even though its Friday, I am already exhausted

@Ben aww man, it’s still Thursday here

@Ben where do you live Australia?
If anybody is interested I’m trying to homebrew a beholder race / class combined thing for d&d 5e and I’m looking for a little help with the eye rays

@Ben The upside is it is friday and you probably aren't going to get anything done anyway

Ben
@linksassin that is a relaxing thought XD
@TheDragonOfFlame yeah, I live in Australia. If you meant to ask where, I'm in QLD
@BardicWizard the good news is I can tell you the world will still be here when it gets to Friday for you

Q: What is the difference between a spell with a range of "Self" and a spell with a range of "Self (XYZ)?

illustroThere are a number of spells with a range of "Self", and a number of spells with a range of "Self (XYZ)" where XYZ is some modifier. Is the range of Self consistent between these two? Are the targeting rules different in each case? What is the difference between these two ranges?

Haven’t that one been sent already
like three times

@Ben ummm I thought that time zones didn’t work that way

@TheDragonOfFlame please tell me you gain an eye for each level in this class

@MarkWells 5th, 11th, and 20th, surely

and for each eye/level you get a cantrip of your choice except for Encode Thoughts
and that's the entire class :)

11:37 PM
@MarkWells not quite. The way I’ve tentatively set it up is you can choose a certain number of rays at L1 and then unlock more at certain levels. Also, each eye has a weak ish base effect that is free, and an effect that requires special points to make more powerful.... its a bit complicated and janky

Ben
@BardicWizard [roll to recover my lame humour with a witty remark]
d20

Ben
Dangit

@MarkWells a character with 20 cantrips wouldn’t be that bad actually

@MarkWells from all the lists?

11:40 PM
So it's a class with no features, except 1 cantrip per level?

It makes me think of the concept of cantrips from that one Goblin Punch article: they're not spells that you know so much as extra spiritual limbs that you've grafted on

The best case choices would be eldritch blast, followed by all the others

Objection: the meaning of "best" is not specified.

Just take eldritch blast your all set
technically though
a L20 casting eldritch blast has roughly the same DPR as a 20th level fighter, but from range

@MarkWells Dealing the most damage and ending encounters quickest

11:43 PM
Side note is anyone interested in the actual class I’m designing or are we just going to talk about the 20 eyed beholder with all the cantrips? 😂

@TheDragonOfFlame I was getting back to that, yeah
let's hear it!

Eye Rays
At 1st level, you gain the ability to shoot rays from your various eye stalks.
Eye Ray Ability. Your Eye Ray Ability is Intelligence.
Eye Ray Save DC: 8 + your intelligence modifier + your proficiency bonus
Eye Ray Points. At 1st level, you have 2 eye Ray points. You gain more at higher levels, as shown by the Eye Ray Points column of the beholder class table. The maximum amount of Eye Ray Points you can spend on one Ray at a time is shown in the Max Points column of the beholder class table.
Sorry it’s super long lol
and unedited

Looks like a spellcaster with a very limited spell list. What's the purpose or intended role of this class?

That’s not the only abilities just the first level eye rays and it has a lot more customization as everything is a cantrip that can be made better with points
It would most likely be a ranged attacker
Also at higher levels there would probably be like multi eye rays per turn or something
What I’m trying to do is balance all the free ones with cantrips and stuff but it’s hard for like the petrifaction ray

Does this mean that using, say, Death Ray for d10 damage costs zero points and can be done all day?

11:49 PM
Yeah
its same damage as fire bolt or eldritch blast

except it gets around armor?
