5:05 PM
hey
i finally finished my prep

@kviiri As for individual interactions, trying to recall examples, in those dozen-people groups, of course usually there's only one person speaking at a time (that's just the way dialogues work), but it's not uncommon for 4 or more to be involved in the overall dialogue. E.g. the one nerd who's deflecting a mugging attempt by pulling the three gops into a pyramid scheme, or the 6 or so mistresses and a wife arguing over how to split one dude (who participates in the dialogue too).
Do note that I don't actively seek out comedy works most of the time, so I don't have many fresh examples in memory.

5:22 PM
@KorvinStarmast - Found a 5th edition example of that / you were looking for. Daggers only in that edition, however.

@Gwideon Good job!

@JohnP Ah, do you have an explanation? I think it may be helpful in terms of confirming our guess.

@KorvinStarmast Posted an answer - One is handle, the other is to throw.

@JohnP Thanks, that's a step in the right direciton. :)

5:47 PM
@JohnP Man, been a while since I heard that one ... thanks for the refresh
@JohnP I prefer Makem and Clancy's Green Fields of France, but these guys do a worthy cover.

@KorvinStarmast Love the High Kings - They have a great original song called The Irish Pub.

Yeah, that one popped up and it's on my Pandora. :)

@KorvinStarmast I used to play bodhran for Makem's nephew at local pubs before he moved to the NW.

@JohnP Cool!
I met a lady in Virginia Beach back in the 80's whose voice was the first one that I heard sing Green Fields of France. Her voice had a high alto / low soprano timbre: nobody I've heard do it quite got what she gave to it. It raised goose bumps.

6:26 PM
@KorvinStarmast I've been pretty lucky - Since Ann teaches Irish Dance (And competed), her school often gets called to provide dancers. She's danced for Gaelic Thunder, Lunasa, Natalie McMaster, Trinity and a few others. I've gotten to meet quite a few of them as well.

@KorvinStarmast The first time I heard Brandy by the Looking Glass, it was this couple and their friend who vaguely resembled Craig Robinson, and I've never found a cover that quite sounded the way they did that night.

@goodguy5 They had good craic then. :)

@JohnP Oh, I love a spot of craic, so I do.

6:42 PM
@goodguy5 That song takes me back, goodness.
@JohnP It's nice to have connections.

7:33 PM
@Rubiksmoose I do think it would stack for that swashbuckler/archmage.

@NautArch I think it might yeah.
At first I both missed the fact that we were talking about the monster and I also misread the wording of the ability. Whoops! lol

heh :) Hopefully they clarify some things.
I mean, we don't really need to know how they made this monster to answer it.
BUt that last question I don't think we can answer.

GcL
A stacked swashbuckler and archmage? which is on top? I'd expect the swashbuckler on the shoulders of the archmage, but that doesn't seem particularly stable.

@GcL the archmage is definitely mounting the swashbuckler

@NautArch Don't we thought? The robes need a spellcaster to attune to it.

7:36 PM
@Rubiksmoose We can't just take their homebrewed monster at face value?

GcL
@Rubiksmoose With all the magic items, who can't cast spells these days?

@GcL raging barbarians.

> (requires attunement by a sorcerer, warlock, or wizard)

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Well that seems rather exclusionary.

Doesn't it just?

GcL
7:37 PM
@NautArch True. However, being a barbarian is all the rage these days.
I think it's because of the music the players are listening to these days.

@NautArch Maybe.
Though ironically, it seems the Archmage wouldn't be able to attune to the item either.
It doesn't say that it has any class levels or anything.
Unless I'm missing something

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, that might be a sticky issue. MIght as well just build a homebrew monster from scratch.
But given it's a spellcaster using INT....it's a wizard, harry.
does it having any non-wizard spells?

@NautArch I would call it that as well.

As NPCs, they can be Rule-Zero'ed such that they meet prerequisites for attunement - Or more generally, bypass prereqs for using items

So let's say they give this rogue 1 wizard level or something. We think it would work?
*swashbuckler

7:41 PM
I think that it would
But this level of thought is really appropriate for PCs, not NPCs, even if NPCs were officially allowed class levels

> If the class is a spellcasting class, a monster qualifies if that monster has spell slots and uses that class's spell list (DMG 136)

GcL
Also, it's like "archmage". I don't judge a book by it's cover, but that cover literally has a synonym for wizard as the title. Of course the foreword states, "you've stretched this analogy too far", so there's that.

@Someone_Evil There we go. I knew I was missing something.
I just worry that the entire point of the question is the second part about the PC and until that point is clarified I think that it is probably best if it is closed.

@GcL On the other hand, anyone can use the Wand of Orcus. And Orcus himself might be able to use the longsword of not-Orcus

GcL
@Upper_Case So you're saying a wand in one hand and a sword in the other? Is the requirement for that a middle name of "Danger" ?
Upper Danger Case

7:50 PM
@Rubiksmoose yeah, that's my hunch, too.

@NautArch If they plan on adding this to an actual swashbuckler class, I think it is fair to say that it would be unwise. Swash is already one of the better rogue subclasses.

@Rubiksmoose You could make a balance argument by comparing it to a monk's or barbarian's unarmored AC, and how it's an alternative calculation rather than something that stacks. Whereas the swash NPC's feature, as written, doesn't work that way. So it's not balanced.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose You're a mod now. Just throw in some irish moss, wait for everything to settle, then pour from the top.

@Rubiksmoose The actual swashbuckler subclass(es) (Rogue; SCAG, XGtE) add their Charisma to initiative, not AC

@Someone_Evil Mhm. I think it would be a bit much to give them the bonus to AC as well.
@MikeQ In this case though, the swashbuckler monster ability does not seem to be an alternate calculation hence the power of it.
Or at least it isn't clear that it is.

7:57 PM
As written, it says "included", rather than added or an alternate calculation. So its interaction with other AC calculations is ambiguous. It seems like it wasn't intended to be given to player characters.

@MikeQ I would agree.
And generally, monster abilities are surely not written with PC-porting in mind.

uhoh
help pile forming

Githzerai Monks have a Unarmored Defense feature that is identical except for using Wisdom

GcL
Wasn't there a swashbuckler UA?

@GcL Probably, they've published the subclass twice in books (SCAG, XGtE)

GcL
8:01 PM
Seems like something you could just build out as a fighter-rogue

@GcL There was a UA certainly, but as pointed out above it is also published

@GcL First seen in 2015 UA "Waterborne Adventures"

@GcL The Monk/Rogue build is pretty harrowing (against single targets at the least)

@GcL It is. Orcus usually just goes by a mononym, so it doesn't come up in-game very often. But the full, proper name is "The Honorable Orcus Danger Bertrand, Esquire"

GcL
If your'e going for unbalanced, potentially overpowered, but with just enough legitimacy it might squeak by a DM, UA is where it's at.
@Upper_Case If my first names were "The Honorable" I'd probably go by one of my middle names as well.

8:20 PM
I have a stack-best-practice question
I answered a question, but too hastily, and a superior answer came up minutes later. I corrected the information in my original answer, but it really has nothing to offer any more
In such a case, deleting my answer would be fine, right?

@Upper_Case It's ok to do, but not necessary. Sometimes a second explanation can still be insightful and helpful.

@Upper_Case If your answer definitely doesn't add any value, then it's fine to delete. But like @MikeQ says, often it IS helpful to have multiple ways of explaining the same thing.

@MikeQ Yeah, but my answer was just wrong :( There's some very minor cleverness in how the question could technically be answered in one word, but I don't know that that's enough to preserve it (or that it'd be worth more downvotes)

GcL
@Upper_Case Yeah. Worst case that happens is people get all up in arms and force undelete it.

8:51 PM
@kviiri Kingdom is an entirely time-linear experience and focuses on the interplay between three factors in a society - the power to make decisions, the power to see the consequences, and the power to unite the people. During the course of the game it's expected that your viewpoint character will rotate among the groups for story or tactical reasons.

GcL
Well, at least Trogdor will be happy about all the conversation moved into that room.

:51822114 nvm I see you took care of it

is anybody else bothered by that you can't move move messages? I always am
also moving messages on mobile is ugh

GcL
You just have to ask. Allegedly, they'll move any messages on request.

8:55 PM
And on a similar note, rpg.SE looks terribly bland from mobile.

1 message moved from Not a bar, but plays one on TV

the custom theme is only there in the responsive desktop version which I hate

@AndrasDeak Oh really? I think it is a ton more usable than the old mobile version.

for such inconsistency reasons (such as missing flag icons and the like) yeah, but it always looks worse to me
of course modding is probably impossible with the old one :)
I always use the mobile site and only switch to responsive desktop when I need to flag or look at "last seen" times

@AndrasDeak I've never actually tried! I got my diamond after the release of the new one lol

8:59 PM
I bet if I can't flag then your features will also be hamstrung

Oh I'm sure.

user15026
Moderating on mobile was not great. I used full site for Arqade to mod, and then managed okay with mobile chat (but chat moderating from mobile chat is not great, fullsite is preferred)

you can only move messages one by one in chat, which is almost a deal breaker
and only from desktop view, of course...

user15026
Chat mods can multimove messages

user15026
9:03 PM
(at least, you could but I haven't been a mod in a bit, so I might be wrong)

@NautArch Well it's clearer now. They're definitely asking about giving an NPC's ability to a PC.

true

Though the "too strong" question is still an issue

@NautArch Yeah it looks like our instincts were right about the true focus of the question.

@Ash hmm, then perhaps I just wasn't trying hard enough. Assuming room owner moves have the same mechanics, which they should

user15026
9:07 PM
@AndrasDeak I think they do, but I've not had to exercise the use of it in a while.

Just so we're talking about the same thing: could you move multiple messages from mobile?

@Rubiksmoose It's still two separate questions. DOes this work like this and is it too much to give this class feature to a player.

I've been grumping about the mobile (and "desktop view but from mobile") interface

@NautArch Indeed. And not nearly enough information to answer the second one IMO

@Rubiksmoose don't think this should be reopened yet unless they narrow or provide the detail.

user15026
9:09 PM
@AndrasDeak I think so. But again, it's been a while since I had a diamond and while I have RO in the Bridge, I've not had to actually move stuff while on mobile.

@NautArch Agreed

user15026
So I might be completely talking nonsense. :P

@Ash OK, just making sure we're not miscommunicating :)
thanks

Gosh, I have a hard enough time just using the default user chat interface in mobile.

user15026
And it used to be so much worse! I remember when we got the current version, and I was like "THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER"

9:19 PM
@MikeQ Dupe hammer dropped, thanks for the tip off

10:05 PM
Someone on another site just asked how many dice are rolled in one turn in D&D. The short answer is "too many" lol

@Himitsu_no_Yami The answer is "it depends" and "Not as many as are rolled in Tunnels and Trolls"
Unless two ancient Dragons are using breath weapons against one another ...

wait how many dice would that be?

For the damage alone that is ... lemme check ...

52 d 6

10:16 PM
jesus

and then there are saving throws

which could have adv or disadv

And before that there were two initiative rolls
:)
yes, could be ad or disad
ANyhone else in the area tosses in their saving throw ...

that's... a lot of dice

The hilarious part is that if the two dragons are red and breathing at each other, neither takes damage but all others in the area not immune to fire are likely cooked. :)

10:18 PM
LMAO

Yeah, and I suspect there are scenarios where it's a lot more.

Thinking I might need to expand on my dice roller program to include the ability to roll more than one die at a time

@BESW same, my phone hates me

Q: Would allowing versatile weapons wielded in two hands to benefit from Dueling be unbalanced?

Liam MorrisAs a DM, would allowing players using a versatile weapon in two hands to benefit from Dueling create unforeseen imbalance in the game? The reason for this change is because it appears that the longsword, when used without a shield, is far outmatched by the greatsword in terms of damage. Whilst th...

10:40 PM
@HotRPGQuestions too easy, only if the weapons didn't weigh the same

11:05 PM
Is there a way to search for creatures by trait? I'm trying to create an encounter with creatures that have the magical resistance trait. Is there a way to compile all possible list without manually reading through every source material?

@kent Try DNDBeyond's search? It's not perfect, but you can try searching their creature databases. https://www.dndbeyond.com/search?f=monsters&c=monsters&q=Your Search Term Here

@MikeQ Do you mean the advanced filter?
@MikeQ Ahhh that link is very helpful. Thank you.

No, because their monster-specific search (at /monsters) doesn't let you search by arbitrary trait text

@MikeQ dndbeyond.com/… bingo. Thanks

hey there @kent, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Q: How does Monks' Improved Unarmored Movement work out of combat?

StackLloydAt 9th level, Monks gain an improvement of their Unarmored Movement feature: At 9th level, you gain the ability to move along vertical surfaces and across liquids on your turn without falling during the move. Searching on the site for an answer, I only found ones related to turns in comba...

Q: How to work around players whose backstory goes against the story?

SadcardboardcatI've been playing Pathfinder with friends for about a year and a half now, and I tell other friends that haven't played dnd how much I enjoy it. I piqued their interest in the game and offered to DM for them. I have two new players that are engaging in my NPCs and combat very well! However, I h...
