2:10 PM
Hrm. It occurs to me looking at the death item question, there are dozens of spells/items/whatevers that instantly kill a PC, why aren't there more items that prevent this?

@JohnP Maybe because it minimizes those things? If everything has a counter, then nothing is special?
And that there are options for returning to life.
Personally, I dont see an issue with having that item. If they want a safety net, use a safety net. not a big deal.

Yeah, death has to be at least a possibility (unless you've houseruled no PC death) otherwise the stakes are always meaningless. Having too many options to circumvent that possibility cheapens the feeling of danger.

Beg your pardon, there is at least one item that prevent death
Lich's phylactery :P

And assuming something happens to 4 reelz kill a PC, that just becomes an epic sidequest to gather the stuff for a True Resurrection.

(Okay, that doesn't count, but I couldn't resist)

2:18 PM
@Nyakouai It does count, you can learn the ritual to make one in Curse of Strahd

@NautArch I'm not saying it has to be common, but I'm not seeing anything.
At least with the effect the poster is describing.

@JohnP Well the most obvious thing that has that effect is revivify on a contingency
9
Q: Is it possible to delay the Revivify spell so it's activated when a character dies?

ZorsalThe other day I was speaking with one of my players and he thought "Is there actually a way to delay a revivify spell so it is activated when the character dies?" I thought it could be a great idea but couldn't remember any way of delaying spells. Is there any other way to delay a spell so it ac...

@JohnP there is at least one item which is death adjacent the Periapt of Wound Closure, which stabilises a PC if they are dying

@DavidCoffron I still think it's mostly a non-issue and more about table play agreement

(at the start of their turn)

2:27 PM
@DavidCoffron But that relies on an outside agent with the appropriate abilities/spells.
@illustro That is true, I had forgotten that one.

@JohnP That can be said of many magic items that replicate spell-like effects

@DavidCoffron mmm...peripherally, I suppose.

it doesn't interact with instant death effects (as you would be dead as opposed to dying at the start of your turn)

Aroma of Curdled Death, that's a nasty little item...

If I were to allow a character to craft such a magic item, I would place it at Very Rare or Legendary rarity, since it does something usually only attainable to level 11 or higher characters.

2:30 PM
Since Revivify's cast time is 1 action, could you not ready it with the trigger of "when one of my allies dies"?

Die no save/save or die/Con damage.

However, if crafting isn't an aspect of your game, and you can limit access to the item, it is totally up to the GM whether to provide it or not.
@JohnClifford Yes, but then you have to Concentrate on it, and you lose the spell slot if none of your characters die in that round
13
Q: Does a Readied spell immediately use a spell slot?

rlbond86The PHB is a bit unclear when it comes to readied spells in combat. If I lose my concentration do I lose the spell slot? What about if the trigger never occurs, do I get the spell slot back?

@DavidCoffron it's essentially replicating the death ward spell, once

True. You'd probably have to ready it when an ally had failed 2 death saves or something.

which is a 4th level spell, and would put it at the rare rarity
(according to the DMG)

2:32 PM
@JohnP But not as nasty as Aroma of Curdled Milk

@illustro No, it explicitly works differently than death ward, functioning after death saves are failed or an instant-death effect

It works as an answer to the question as written though: you can delay a spell via the Ready action assuming your chosen trigger happens and you're able to maintain concentration.

You still have your normal capacity to recover from dying, and then a safety net.

@DavidCoffron in particular the second half of death ward states: If this spell is still in effect when the target is subjected to an effect that would kill it instantaneously without dealing damage, that effect is instead negated against the target, and the spell ends

@illustro Still isn't a consideration for the dying recovery chance

2:34 PM
The death saving throws effect is already covered by the Periapt of Wound Clousure (which stabilises characters if they are unconscious and dying)
and does so without limit
and is set as an uncommon item
If you were to combine part of a 4th level spell, with a single use portion of an uncommon magic item (which would normally have unlimited uses), why would that elevate it to Very Rare or Legendary?
Essentially you need an item that works once, performs the second half of the death ward spell, and is a single use periapt of wound closure in one

I really want to believe we're overthinking this :)

You can of course replicate that effect with a combination of Contingency and Revivify...but that seems like overkill

@illustro The OP hasn't clarified if it stabilizes them after the failed death saves, or ressurects them (like rolling a 20 on a save) or if they are still dying
If it just stabilizes then I agree that Rare is probably fine
But a full rez after a 3rd fail save is very strong

@DavidCoffron Yeah, i'm deabing on a VTC as unclear until we know.

It lets you get out of a dangerous area without having to drag someone with you (who'll be unconscious for a few hours), or waste resources on healing that person

2:40 PM
@DavidCoffron yes, a "bring back to life after 3 failed saves" is strong, but only if it's a multiple use effect, otherwise you are just replicating revivify

OP probably does need to clarify, but I would say they almost certainly don't intend for the effect to involve the PC continuing to roll death saves since that would essentially just make it "the next time you're reduced to 0 hit points you get 4 death saves instead of 3" rather than saving you from death.

(or healing word...)

@JohnClifford it's either 1 HP or stable at 0.
but of course, a particularly intelligent/mean NPC could still kick them while they're down.

Agreed.

But that's also why I don't think this is a big deal and up to the DM/Table. DMs pull punches all the time (or at least, I do.)

2:45 PM
I absolutely do. I don't think my players actually realise just how easy I go on them when they're in trouble.
Our next session is going to start with them up against 6 Vampire Spawn. That should be interesting.

As a DM I pull punches up to (and including) level 4, once characters get above that level the kids gloves are off (as they will be, generally, fighting more intelligent and battle hardened foes) and the dice rolls land as they may

I make suboptimal attacks all the time once things start to not look good. But even then, sometimes bad decisions by players end up causing death. I used one in my 2nd session to create a plot hook by putting themin debt to someone who resurrected the PC.

@illustro Does that include a 2nd level character that firmly whacks a gas spore because they are convinced it is an illusion? :p

@JohnP Ha! Used them and players kept killing them when others were in range of it's death burst. Teamwork is kind of a problem with my group still.

@JohnP If a character does stupid things...I can't help them...but with a level 2 character I might have them make a wisdom check before completing their swing, coupled with an attack roll to see if they hit it (to give them a chance)

2:51 PM
Our cleric got one-shot by a bandit and the others were in bad shape so I had Strahd rescue the party because he's still curious to see what they're about and doesn't want them dead yet (though they didn't know this at the time because he was disguised as Ireena)

I had a character almost die on me the other week because they thought they could stop a rolling sphere trap by putting an immovable rod between them and the sphere
it did not end well...

@illustro How big was the sphere? But that seems like a good idea.

If I ever run Tomb of Horrors my group is completely screwed.

@illustro My DM gave me a strong hint of "Uh...are you really sure you want to whack it? I mean seriously, yer just gonna walk up and swing?"
Me: Yes. It's an illusion from mega high level screw with the PC's NPC we are chasing.
DM: ooookayy....

@NautArch 7ft diameter sphere of granite. Using an online calculator we worked out that it would weigh 34,000 lbs
(which does sort of justify the 10d10 damage in the DMG!)

2:54 PM
Final outcome: I struck it, made my save for 1/2 damage, DM rolled all 1's on the damage and I made my fort save.

Oh, if anyone remembers my question about portals to Sigil, I figured it out: the druid's gate key doesn't transport you to Sigil, it just gives you innate knowledge of when and where the next portal to Sigil on your plane will be opened. It happens to be in several hundred years (so the Druid won't be able to rely on it) but Strahd doesn't care when it is because he never plans on dying, so it still makes sense as an object he would want.

@JohnP If the player ignores all the warnings...or objects to my attempts to save em...then they are just looking for an opportunity for me to take away their character sheet

That was the weirdest campaign, almost every single off the wall idea I came up with actually worked.

@illustro Yeah, I'd say either letting them straight up realize the Rod won't stop that or offering a roll is reasonable.

and hand them a blank one for their next character

2:56 PM
@illustro Heh, after the third session of weird stuff that worked, my dm refused to call my character anything but "macguyver"

It's important to differentiate between "character is being stupid" and "player is misinformed". If you're not sure, ask the player.

@NautArch What kind of roll would that be? Arcana to know the capacity of the rod (unless it was identifyed earlier)? Straight intelligence to gauge the weight of the boulder?

@DavidCoffron Wisdom to judge how good of an idea they have...

@DavidCoffron Could be several options for that. Both of those sound reasonable. But I'd assume once identified, characters know the limits of a magic item. The harder bit is in gauging the weight. I'd probably do an INT check, and given it's size set a pretty low DC.

It depends on the character specifics really
and their expertise

3:01 PM
^ that too. Give them a reasonable option they'd likely succeed at.
But hilarity ensues when they don't.
Rocks roll, everyone dies.

@Behacad discussion we had about the "avoid death item" started about an hour ago
JohnP was the first to bring up the lack thereof of items in the game as is

@illustro Wisdom (Animal Handling) to understand the rock!
At least my Earth Genasi insists that all rocks are sapient

It could be Korg.
Did you check whether it had pamphlets?

@DavidCoffron I suppose the rock could be a sleeping earth elemental baby
(or an earth elemental egg)

3:17 PM
@illustro Or a dormant Galeb Duhr

@DavidCoffron Wisdom (Survival)...to understand your chances of surviving a close encounter with a rock
true!

I'm still holding out hope for Korg.

@JohnClifford It's certainly possible...If I had to stat out Korg, I'd make him a very intelligent Earth Elemental tbh

3:52 PM
@illustro If I was making an embodiment of Korg I would think a bard would be more appropriate
:p
Although thinking about statting it makes me want to dig out my old Champions rulebooks.

4:13 PM
Afternoon

@KorvinStarmast - Given the age and the timeline, Liara had to either be wife/sister/cousin. But that's just a guess. It would have been helpful if Perkins had said how she was related in that tweet....
Huh. Someone created a 3d printer plan for Liara.

4:29 PM
What language should I use to specify a spell that a character has prepared/can cast today, right now, vs a spell that they simply know or are able to cast

@G.Moylan What game?

for a wizard, it would be "prepared" vs "they know," but is there a phrasing that I can use that will work for any spellcasting class?
@Sdjz D&D 5e, sorry
I'm revising a homebrew spell and trying to figure out how to make that differentiation clear without being overly verbose

@G.Moylan Hm maybe the context would help, can you share the current wording?

Hmm. I think I was thinking about this the other day when I saw "prepared" used for such case, but didn't investigate any further.

"ready to fire" vs "must be loaded"?

4:33 PM
@Sdjz this is the original context: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/150917/…
@G.Moylan I am revising. Currently I have something like this: "Choose a creature within range. The creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, if the target can cast spells, the affected creature forgets one spell they can cast that is one level lower than the spell slot used to cast this spell. You may choose which spell is forgotten from a list of valid choices."
but "can cast" is super vague

@G.Moylan The rules use the term "fixed in mind" in the Spellcasting chapter, which is a bit nasty because that's about the only time this wording is used.
> Before a spellcaster can use a spell, he or she must have the spell firmly fixed in mind, or must have access to the spell in a magic item. Members of a few classes, including bards and sorcerers, have a limited list of spells they know that are always fixed in mind.
and later:
> In every case, the number of spells a caster can have fixed in mind at any given time depends on the character's level.

@G.Moylan Do you intend this to work exclusively with prepared/known spells from a class or are things like Magic Initiate and racial spells included?

that is certainly esoteric but it seems to be the systemically "correct" phrase
@Sdjz a spell that they are able to cast in a combat that might take place right now. Unsure about racial spells, as of yet

@G.Moylan Could you maybe work your way through the cases? I mean, there aren't too many: it's an innate spell, a prepared spell or a known, permanently fixed in mind spell.

I thought innate spells weren't cast, but rather are an ability. There was a question on here about that.... I suppose that would answer the racial question

4:41 PM
@G.Moylan They are still cast, you can counterspell them, they have components, etc.

@G.Moylan They are cast like a normal spell, I had to look this up in the MM once... let me see
> A monster with the innate ability to cast spells has the Innate Spellcasting special trait. Unless noted otherwise, an innate spell of 1st level or higher is always cast at its lowest possible level and can’t be cast at a higher level. If a monster has a cantrip where its level matters and no level is given, use the monster’s challenge rating.

@kviiri ah ok that spells it out

Well, wish me luck. I have an interview for a new position with my current company tomorrow at 10a.

@kviiri I feel like "known" can get into trouble
@JohnP good luck!

@G.Moylan Not just "known" but "known, permanently fixed-in-mind"
I wish there was a clearer phrasing

4:45 PM
@kviiri what about: On a failed save, if the target can cast spells, the affected creature forgets one innate, prepared, or otherwise fixed in mind spell that is one level lower than the spell slot used to cast this spell.

@G.Moylan I think that's quite clear!
Good

awesome. I'll post for the regular "is this balanced" review soon

GcL
@G.Moylan A bit weird that the caster can choose the spell the target forgets. Seems likes a two-in-one. Get to see the list of spells the target has memorized AND eliminate one.

@GcL only from that level, though

GcL
@G.Moylan or lower

4:52 PM
@GcL no only one level below the slot used to cast
@G.Moylan in the new one, sorry. that's not up yet

GcL
Interesting.

yeah I'm posting a revised version soon.

GcL
Still seems peculiar to get a list of their spells.

@GcL it certainly is, but I find it thematic, particularly for a villain

GcL
@G.Moylan So the PCs don't get the spell?

4:55 PM
@GcL they can learn it but it's not supposed to just be freely given out. they'd have to work for it

I personally don't see much advantage in hiding enemy stat blocks anyway
But DnD 5e does have a precedent for features giving "collateral information" (see Cutting Words)

@kviiri mostly so folks don't 'metagame' attacks options. DIscovery of resistances/immunities.

@G.Moylan like, they couldn't just pick it when they level or build. They'd have to learn this stuff from someone/where and then they could pick it or learn it

@NautArch Yeah that's what people keep saying but I feel people metagame less when they know that stuff. Or at least spend less energy metagaming.

GcL
@kviiri I like it to be a mystery. Had a variant of misty step that literally made a puff of mist. Players started stocking up on holy water and stakes... which didn't help because they weren't up against a vampire.

4:58 PM
@kviiri Probably very table dependent. And usually unless they're casters with lots of different damage options, folks do what they normally do.

GcL
@G.Moylan If the players don't get the spell and it fits a thematic niche in your story, I wouldn't worry much about balance. The balance there is just PCs vs opponent. Not trying to balance the relative power of PCs or PC classes.

I also don't like hiding resistances from my players, it's usually stuff they ought to know intuitively anyway, and jumping out with a "a-ha, that attack only deals half damage because that's what the good book says" feels like I'm just disappointing people for no fault of theirs.
So I assume they've heard the relevant bits of the Monster Manual in the form of folk wisdom, informative posters, rumors or education.

@kviiri what about things like aberrations?
@G.Moylan or "otherworldy" stuff

@JohnP knocking on wood.

@kviiri I'll usually do a skill check at the start of the fight and share info based on rolls.
but if they've fought it or similar things i'll tell them more

5:03 PM
@G.Moylan I give 'em a proper chance to learn that stuff in advance.
@NautArch I used to do that, but it left me unsatisfied when the difficulty of an encounter hinged disproportionately on a single roll.

GcL
@kviiri I usually have a bunch of pretty on the nose clues about resistances before the characters get to the fight. Unless it's just lore one of the characters should already know.

@kviiri Hmm. you mean like "you're not sure how effective your blade will be against that swarm?"

@GcL My GMs typically don't know the phrase "lore one of the characters should already know". They assume people who have lived in the fantasy world for decades (or centuries since someone is always an elf) doesn't have a clue about something like trolls.

@kviiri yeah, me too for most beasts and undead. and humanoids. Some, not so much. So I assume they've heard the relevant bits of the Monster Manual in the form of folk wisdom, informative posters, rumors or education.
@kviiri I really dislike that assumption ...

@NautArch I mean like... say my party fights a spooky Morso. The Morso is immune to fire, but my players don't know this. One of them plays a wizard who is about to blow their only remaining L3 slot on a Fireball. The single roll that could tell them that determines a lot.
@KorvinStarmast I really dislike the opposite assumption, which is for some reason routinely not even treated like an assumption.

5:07 PM
@kviiri Hmmm. That's tricky. I mean, a lot of creatures are immune/resistant to fire. Jumping to use that before making sure seems like a player error.

@kviiri I was answering two different comments. I was under the impression that we both prefer that the PC's who've lived in that world a while would know quite a bit about the monsters therein ... if not all things, quite a bit.

@NautArch Everything else might be an error as well. Too bad the player who rolled badly can only know in retrospect eh?

@NautArch but do we presume that all layers do research in the monsster manual ? Depends on the player

@KorvinStarmast Knock hard, this would be a very interesting position. I have a lot of prepwork to do tonight.

@kviiri one of the things about "custom built monsters" is that you don't know what won't work until you find out what won't work.

5:11 PM
@KorvinStarmast Most don't, but some do :) At least in my experience. I've got a player who DMs and definitely uses their MM knowledge in-game (which is kinda frustrating to me.)

That's I think an intention, but I also think that "custom monsters" should be used sparingly. personal matter of taste. My nephew homebrewed almost every beast in his D&D 5e world.

@NautArch You can't take the MM out of their head, but you could even out the situation by allowing the others to see the same information too.
My equilibrium is stable, yours isn't ;)

@NautArch I've been at this so long that I no longer worry about that. I'll now and again ask "how does {char name} know that detail" if I feel that someone is taking it too far ... but not so much anymore.

@kviiri True, but I honestly like the idea (as a player and DM) that I don't know everything about every monster. We encounter them and learn as we fight. It gives something else to the fight besides the pure combat. There's a learning bit, but that's something I haven't fully explored. Need to think about sharing info as a fight progresses.

5:14 PM
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I usually don't say anything. It's not worth it, and they're so awfully tactically during combat that they need the help at this point.
If they actually start working together more, I'll reconsider.

@NautArch Need to think about sharing info as a fight progresses My first DM for 5e did something a lot like that.
sharing info as fight progresses.

We seriously talked about "not speaking out of your turn" back when we started

I'm trying not to make a user feel bad about their answer (giving history here), but not sure how to keep helping improve this without seeming like i'm attacking. Should I just back off?
@kviiri I'm actually more okay with that. I run difficult combats and want them to work together.

@NautArch Yeah, sometimes the lack of communication is the perfect emphasis for the value of communication.

@NautArch He likes to argue in comments. Engage as much as you like, I am sure it will all get moved to chat in due course.

5:21 PM
@kviiri One thing I really dislike at another of the tables I play at is that we really can't communictae in-character if it's not on our turn. SO we can ask another character a question, but they can't answer until it's their turn. ANd then have to wait until my turn again to respond.

@NautArch ...but out of character is ok? That's weird

@kviiri Yeah, we can communicate otherwise. But we can't make decisions about things the character wouldn't know (like if a charcter is separated and in trouble, we can't start heading their way without reason.)

@NautArch Is this done to keep play from bogging down?

@KorvinStarmast I have no idea why it's done :)

@NautArch I think it's the perception that turns happen chronologically. It doesn't make sense if the wizard goes, then you, and you ask a question of the wizard and they respond before the rogue goes after you.
@G.Moylan which is flawed, since turns happen simultaneously, but it feels like they happen "in order" due to initiative
it makes more sense if that initial interpretation of turn order is correct, but it isn't

5:29 PM
@KorvinStarmast I also dn't want to question their subjective experience, but I'm finding it odd that all of a sudden there's an answer for each concern that wasn't provided earlier.

I propose a compromise. All players may speak out of turn, but only one word at a time before someone else speaks

@goodguy5 Goodguy5

@NautArch Yea?

Now @NautArch can respond with one more word

(I thought that's what he was setting up to do)

5:32 PM
@goodguy5 Oh, I thought it was just one word and had to wait for someone else each time. That makes more sense :P

For all intents and purposes, "shut up" counts as one word"

@NautArch The user has complained of targeting and bias on meta due to not elaborating on subjective answers before and having their answers dv.

@JohnP yeah, that's why i'm trying to tread lightly.
although i did check on the movable permanent circle, and that seems okay.

Q: Can a permanent Teleportation Circle be made on a moving vehicle?

user27327There is a similar question about this for 3.5e, but can a permanent teleportation circle be created on a large moving vehicle? For example, a sailing ship, or a wide portable floor? The spell says: You can create a permanent teleportation circle by casting this spell in the same location ev...

@NautArch How did the "could have trained goats" turn into "used trained sheep?"

@JohnP So as not to clearly be identical? But I don't want to assume bad faith, so I"m trying not to.

5:39 PM
@NautArch Eh, I asked. I'm also curious how they haul around a 25 foot wagon. That would take....a lot of mules.

@JohnP Yeah, that part is the biggest issue I think.
Many times I couldn't even bring my mount as a player.

@NautArch Admittedly it hauled ore, but a 6' deep 16' long wagon used for hauling borax back in the day used 18 mules/2 horses and had 7' diameter wheels. A second wagon of 1200 gallon capacity went a long just to water the animals.

@JohnP sweet jeebus.

@NautArch You noticed that too, did you? 8^D

@KorvinStarmast :(

5:55 PM
@NautArch They are changing the story every edit and contradicting earlier versions.
Edit 4:
> the circles (10 foot area) were inscribed on flat wagons - so they could be moved. We moved ours it to a better location near a shepherd who we paid for a sheep with saddlebags to help transport objects through the circle.
current version:
> the circles (10 foot area each) were originally inscribed on the ground in temples. The smuggler/carpenter/burglars carefully cut the temple floors, and put the circles on flat wagons

yeah :( disappointing.

GcL
@kviiri Seems like a consideration that other DMs might not make. Assuming all characters know about all opponent vulnerabilities definitely circumvents the issue entirely.

@GcL If there are weaknesses that the players have (or strengths), do your enemies exploit/avoid? Or is that a really ridiculous question? :D

@JohnP Yeah... Seems contrived to circumvent the good-subjective best-practice. As though the user wishes to present ideas that aren't backed up with experience, and is using claimed experience in an attempt to avoid detection.

@DavidCoffron That's how it looks to me as well.

GcL
6:01 PM
@NautArch Seems like a reasonable thing to consider. I do with intelligent opponents. Which also has made for some entertaining misdirection by the player characters. Illusions to make the tank look like an easy target has been funny. "Surprise! I was actually a barbarian all along!"

@GcL Eh. There are regional differences too. If trolls aren't very common in a region, the every-day person may genuinely not know much about them (just like how medieval peasants in Western Europe did not know much about the methods to combating arctic pests)
Then you become an adventurer and travel to these regions, and suddenly you are faced with the requirement to learn tactics

Ok, so a 16' wagon that is 6' deep needed 20 draft animals. Admittedly this is a flatter wagon, but stated as at least probably 12' wide to accommodate the 10' circles, I wonder what the conversion for weight would be and the associated increase/decrease for animals would be.

GcL
@DavidCoffron I usually consider the knowledge of the characters, but I'm a bigger fan of making a bunch of really obvious or overt foreshadowing for the resistance/vulnerabilities. It has been satisfying for the players to get the "I knew it" response when their guess based on actual role play was validated.
I find it satisfying when their guess based on meta-gaming is not validated. e.g. misty step that involves actual mist moving from one place to another getting assumed to be a vampire without any in-character investigation.

@GcL I like this idea, too. Add descriptors that subtly suggest things they should be aware of.

GcL
@NautArch I don't do subtle. I do on the nose, and sometimes even that gets missed in the mix of other descriptions and stuff going on.
I rarely get feedback along the lines of, "we get it already. he's immune to fire." My experience is that my players will pick up on a third to half of what I consider obvious hints.

6:06 PM
@JohnP The wagon in the rules doesn't need 20 animals...

GcL
And man do they not like bad surprises that hinged on a single subtle point. I do sometimes include subtle stuff, but only for rewards.

@DavidCoffron that description is really not clear. No dimensions?

@NautArch You get a weight of only 400 lbs though
That's just 2 ox or 4 mules/drafthorses
"An animal pulling a carriage, cart, chariot, sled, or wagon can move weight up to five times its base carrying capacity, including the weight of the vehicle. If multiple animals pull the same vehicle, they can add their carrying capacity together."
Wait a second... That means a single mule can pull 4200 lbs

GcL
@DavidCoffron is it green and you wouldn't like it when it's angry?

And a single ox can pull 5 tons...
@JohnP Forget everything I said; the carrying capacity rules for mounts and vehicles are ridiculous

6:12 PM
@DavidCoffron On a flat surface, I can push a volkswagen beetle, 1974. Not sure I get the issue with the mule?

@DavidCoffron is that the wagon weight or it's carry capacity? I read it as wagon weight.

@KorvinStarmast A paved surface?

@GcL also on a gravel road and in a field, but not in muddy day.
Paved a lot easier.

@NautArch Well I didn't imagine a wagon containing only a teleportation circle would weigh much more

bumpy field? No, need assistance

6:13 PM
@DavidCoffron good point.

GcL
How much does magic weigh anyway? /S

If you are using Variant: Encumbrance rules, any draft animal with 16 strength or higher can pull an empty wagon with no encumbrance. If you aren't, you only need 6 strength...

GcL
I like horses with coloration like that. Where the noses are very contrasting. Would give advantage on persuasion roles for extra apples.

@KorvinStarmast That's about 1800 lbs, so your strength score is at least... 12
But if real world draft-horses can pull 8000, D&D counterparts kind of get screwed with only 18x30x5x2 = 5400 max drag
A maxxed-STR, non-specialized D&D adventurer can maximally lift 600 lbs (1200 with the athlete feat). Very on-par with world record for dead-lift

GcL
6:32 PM
I'd be dead if I lifted that much

@GcL Same; I can barely push that much on wheels xD

@DavidCoffron It's easier to push when not on wheels, you get friction more easily

GcL
I think we should get a donkey for that sort of thing. Preferably one with a nose of contrasting color to the rest of it's face.
Feed that little guy so many apples.

@GcL Donkeys remember faces and people, too. They also live for a long time, about 40 - 50 years. such good bois and gals. Or "jacks and jennys" in the case of their sterile counterparts
they also like playing and will play with balls

GcL
Like fetch or catch?

6:44 PM
@GcL they'll play fetch. They'll kick the ball around. You would use a large rubber ball

@DavidCoffron The most I recall ever being able to military press over my head was 150, but that was back when I could bench 240.
12/13 sounds about right for me in high school/college

here's some videos of Donkeys with balls:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3KpttnaTww
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6rgC0hKuRw

@G.Moylan risky link of the day :P

@NautArch ;)

@KorvinStarmast I was probably a 9 in HS/College, but I'd consider myself a 10 now

GcL
6:51 PM
@G.Moylan Quest to slay a dragon. Why? To get it's bladder of course. We promised our cart donkey a new ball to play with, and we're nothing if not adventurers of our word!
@DavidCoffron I used to think people got more wise as they got older. Observational evidence suggests human wisdom is locked in solidly at a 3.

also for what it's worth, I think it's actually Jacks and Jennets, but it's pronounced "jenny"

@DavidCoffron wait.... A mule can carry more than a wagon?

GcL
They're french?

@GcL bt what about the sage on the mountain?

GcL
@G.Moylan Is human? Solid 3.

6:53 PM
@GcL idk a ranch had it spelled that way

@GcL Which word is that? Pain, Heal, Stun, or Kill?

GcL
A french ranch? Should have checkout out a freedom ranch /S

@GcL this is great and silly and I could see my players doing this

GcL
@DavidCoffron I like that idea. Four wizards running around as a party "of their word"
@G.Moylan Good players. I'd consider giving them apples.

According to Wikipedia it is indeed Jenny

6:54 PM
@GcL Throw a cleric in there for a divine word, one of radiance, one of recall, and some healing

GcL
I'm liking this word theme party more and more.

Mule, not donkey. Mules are the long-lived ones

GcL
How long do jackasses live? because I'd like to know how many years I've got left!

@GcL You need a bard for PW:H, a wizard/sorcerer/warlock can get the other PWs, and a cleric gets the rest. What else for our honest heroes?

GcL
At least one should be named Abe. Another probably named Tea.
A third called "As the Day is Long"

6:58 PM
One needs to be an aarockokra

GcL
They should set their foes pants on fire!

@GcL Ah, so we need heat metal for sure

GcL
metal pants?

@GcL greaves?

@DavidCoffron I'm not getting this one

GcL
6:59 PM
Good point

@G.Moylan "bird's the word"

@DavidCoffron I groaned out loud, so there's that

I need the other two races for our trio of truth

Firbolgs might be sheepish about lying
"As honest as a drunken dwarf" sounds like a phrase people might say

Perfect

7:10 PM
@NautArch Your answer is as good as mine, and has the vitrue of being more concise. I do not understand why some one DV'd. (I updooted).

@KorvinStarmast i've got ideas - but i'm totally fine with downvotes, too.

@NautArch Well, I think there is shennanigans going on, and I wish it wasn't. And I really like the point you made in the comment about "it's kind hard to hit yourself"

@KorvinStarmast meh. It's the upside of the rep volume we have:)
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, realized I wanted to add that into my answer and address that.
It's sort of like the difference between hurt and damage.
Which I think is what AC also comprises.

Yes, that's right. I punched myself can result in you are wearing battle rager special armor. You just injured your hand rather badly from all of the spikes All piano playing attempts are now at disadvantage.

@KorvinStarmast dangerous at ables with critical fumble rules

7:18 PM
@NautArch EVerything is dangerous at tables with critical fumble rules lol

:51306831 real life vs table life?

nm, it helps to read the entire question

@JohnP In that particular question, reading the entire thing is actually quite a task lol

troo troo

@JohnP ... said the Train of Truth

7:33 PM
The Train of Truth is always towing the Caboose of Catastrophe

@JohnP I tow that when I eat Taco Bell

@G.Moylan Oddly I just ate at taco bell and listened to a person of alternate reality rant for ~ 30 minutes.

@G.Moylan ^
(some rummaging and some MSPaint later)

@DavidCoffron Abe even has the beard!
@DavidCoffron also this is great! What are the classes, again?

7:50 PM
@G.Moylan Bard/Cleric/Wizard

@DavidCoffron excellent

GcL
8:07 PM
@DavidCoffron I'm highly entertained.
Honestly best party I've heard of in a while.

@GcL To be frank; any party with a theme (or at least common grounding whether that be in backstory, race, ideals, or objectives) is much more fun than the hodge-podge parties in my usual games (imo)

GcL
A party drove of donkeys questing for a better ball. Need rules for donkey croquet. I wonder if a side quest could be seeking out dryads to make arbors to use as the hoops.

ftfy

Today on Crojack Muleman

8:33 PM
heyo people

Hey!

How's it going?

Busy and tired, but not too bad. You?

Tired but thankfully not busy at work.
I'm kinda amazed to find that the chat isn't blocked at work when half of everything else online is

@Himitsu_no_Yami I get around that. I'm in a position to have a jumpbox external to the nanny net firewall.

8:39 PM
Nice, we're not allowed to bring any electronics in with us
or do half of anything with the computer that isn't using the browser
like, we're locked down here more than we were when I was in school

@Himitsu_no_Yami That's impressive

real interesting thing is that the web filters seem too be different for everyone. (Working at a call center)
some of us can get YouTube to work. Others... not so much

I think I walked out of a call center job on the first day
not my thang

for me it's the best job I've ever had

8:55 PM
Hrm... is there a reason cube of force wouldn't block hail on the same face it blocks arrows?

@JohnP In general magic items have a lot of effects that need DM adjudication. I'm not sure which is worse of those and spells on that front.

9:22 PM
is it valuable for me to edit a note into my old homebrew question linking to the newer version of the same thing?

@GcL make it a party of 4: sorc, warlock, wizard, bard. They are... the Power Word Posse.
@G.Moylan could edit a link in or just leave it as a comment. up to you

I settled for edit. Thank you

@G.Moylan Having the new Q link to the old makes the new one show in the Linked Questions in the sidebar. Having a banner-style bit on the actual question will be much clearer to future readers though.

9:43 PM
So as someone who's relatively new to roleplaying does anyone have any tips for not being an idiot?

Brandon Dixon has dramatically updated the Swordsfall website! Lore, artwork, lore, FAQ, lore, pre-orders, lore, blog, etc.
@Himitsu_no_Yami The friends we're playing with are more important than the game we're playing. Listen, ask questions, build trust and maintain open conversation spaces so that you can collaborate to make the best game possible and ensure everybody's staying happy and safe. I strongly urge choosing support tools that fit your group's needs (I like a pared-down version of Script Change, myself).

welp bit.ly is blocked at work so I can't use that link

@Himitsu_no_Yami Here's the expanded link; it's a Google Drive collection of many different resources that are otherwise scattered across the Internet.

thanks for that. I should be able to save that to my personal google drive

Script Change can be found here (plaintext on personal website) or here (itch pdf download).
@Himitsu_no_Yami There are a lot of different styles of play, your group may have Strong Opinions about which ones they prefer. I find stance theory a useful set of lenses to think about broad categories of roleplaying attitudes.
There's also technique choices that can be helpful to be aware of. For example, a lot of people only think of role-playing such that the player speaks the exact words their character says. But this can be very intimidating and sometimes outright impossible, such as if I'm playing a character who is better at speaking than I am.
Another style is to narrate my character's actions: "Jessie sidles up to the dwarven prince and says Hey, does that beard go all the way down?" vs "Jessie sidles up to the dwarven prince and mutters a pick-up line in his ear."

9:59 PM
OMG that pickup line is hilarious
