The Deadlands lore has the USA and CSA still in civil war around 1870's, although it's slowed down to something like a cold war because of monsters and whatnot. And CSA is no longer doing slavery which is kinda nice.
Texas Rangers are the CSA's "secret police" in a sense. They are somewhere between police, military and intelligence, with their main duty being to "shoot it or recruit it" when it comes to any paranormal stuff going on in the Confederate.
@GcL The Civil War isn't really the main conflict in Deadlands. There's spooky business with hellish influences going on. Undead, witchcraft, whatnot. Plus some railroad companies that are quite literally at war with each other
Slavery is so deeply entwined with the Confederacy that trying to invoke the historical Civil War and just hand-waving "the CSA doesn't do slavery" is very problematic to me.
If a monk uses a staff and has the Dual Wielder feat, can they use a 1d6 attack for one hand then 1d6 attack bonus for the other, plus gaining +1 to AC for holding a melee weapon in each hand?
Seems a bit much to otherwise require 2 staves.
@Yuuki Yeah, but any part of history is nice if you just cut out or gloss over the egregiously bad parts of the period. It's like medieval Europe is a pretty nice setting if you ignore that most cities were open sewers and all the other bad parts.
@Yuuki yeah maybe you are right there actually. I was thinking more from a don't want to have to deal with the topic at the table type of mentality, but I do see how that would be extremely problematic
@Yuuki In-universe, the Confederate scrapping slavery was a last-ditch effort to ally with Europe (and it worked, hence the prolonged conflict) but that's of course rather Thermian and doesn't really change a thing.
I'm a Texan and I'm incredibly concerned at how I might have turned out if it wasn't for the fact that I grew up with Wikipedia and the Internet given how much willful ignorance there was (and still is) in our history classes.
Plus, not a lot of time to worry about a civil war when there are freakin' undead and giant steam powered spiders shooting fireballs all over the place.
@Rubiksmoose I'm sorry for interjecting my non-RPG hobby into this otherwise neat topic, but it's funny how I play the ragtime piano and people associate it with two things: the Wild West (two or three decades too early) or prohibition-era gangstery (two or three decades too late)
@Rubiksmoose I really like it as a hobby although it does have a rather nasty downside --- there are hardly any pianos to show off on, and the only audience at my home (my dearest SO) doesn't like the music I play :D
@Rubiksmoose I was basically totally burnt out on piano music for three years. Then I borrowed my piano for a friend's wedding (I was the best man, not playing though) and not having the darned thing around made me miss playing it
@kviiri Acoustic. Vertical. It was my grandparents' but they are moving so we paid to have it moved from their house to ours. As a kid I spent a lot of time making literal noise on that piano. It may not be the best (though I think it is of decvent quality) but I have a lot of memories of it.
Acoustic pianos are dirt-cheap around here. They used to be fairly popular among middle class citizens, for what I don't know... but with people aging, and dying, and the next generations inheriting those pianos without a place to put them... it seems people'll just want to get rid of them, in most cases.
@Rubiksmoose That'd be a good thing if those pianos found their ways to places where I could play them! Disposing or maintaining one'd probably cost less than just buying one
@Rubiksmoose Although there are some accordion like chambers in the underpinning. Maybe? (although I'd also be very skeptical about the acoustics therein)
@GcL well that wasn't clear at first. Glad OP responded. (it could have easily been OP thinking this was a forum and just wanted a chat on how powerful it was and other related things for example)
But yeah, it is good to go now.
@kviiri huh, what about DL doesn't work for you?
(I ask this knowing nothing about it BTW except what you have told me here)
@Rubiksmoose This might be too much extrapolation on my part, but the Ranger Bible and stuff carried over to Reloaded make it seem they're more focused on being realistic than being fun
Eg. there's a system for gaining promotions, as a Texas Ranger. I did the math --- it'd take insane grind to get to officer tiers. And the book notes that lower ranks are often bound by duty, and IIRC explicitly says what punishments to except if you shy away from it to eg. adventure
Reloaded has it somewhat better in that you basically join the Rangers when you're already a cut above the rest. The Ranger Bible of Classic talks at length all the kinds of menial duties you'll encounter as a Texas Ranger who has to actually enlist as a private.
Roll I dunno, maybe some d10's to see how well you dig that latrine pit.
"Earn your fun", might be the proper summary for that.
@Rubiksmoose With that said, I remind you that I've never actually played Deadlands: Classic and most of the info I have about it comes from a single splatbook that I didn't bother to read very carefully.
@doppelgreener I've yet to play a campaign with a central chargen concept like that and didn't work out really fun for everyone. All elves, no arcane magic, everyone's a sailor... whatever. (cc: @Yuuki @kviiri)
Apparently this question is asking about a site that unfortunately seems to have pirated content. The question is not about the site per se and only a homebrew part of it so is this ok?
@Sdjz hmmmm generally we edit the site out of the question to make things kosher, but this is a bit trickier because they are indeed asking about the exact content.
It seems like a tricky situation warranting a close look and thoughtful analysis, and worth recording and referencing in the future, making it an excellent thing for a meta to examine. Since it's also nearly unprecedented and results in a major question shift, it's absolutely not a thing for chat to hash out.
Remember to link to the meta you open in the question comments.
That said, focus on this issue: don't attempt to solve every situation where something like this might happen, just attempt to focus on solving this particular situation.
I agree, this seems like a very good case for a meta. Several questions have been close to this issue before, but this one really has an issue and we need to set that precedent on meta.
@doppelgreener as a sidenote: I think this is really good advice for the vast majority of meta issues. Forcing answer to rule broadly means that answering is more difficult and lacks a context of a problem in a lot of cases.
@GcL It might be, if a subclass exists that is of the same name but with completely different content.
It may not exist now, but it potentially existing tomorrow is a thing to consider.
Because future answers of "Yes! It's official!" would not actually be correct for this situation.
Also, the question would probably be closed as unclear if it was the very first iteration: "What Fencer? How did you hear about this? Can you share what you're seeing with us?" — that suggests we probably shouldn't do that in a revision either.
It is well known that we do not condone piracy and usually the way to handle links to pirated sources is to replace them with corresponding legal ones.
However, how should we handle a situation where a question is asked about content that is in one such site but the content itself is just homebr...
Yesterday, someone homebrewed a Fencer subclass. Today, someone asks if a subclass called Fencer is homebrew or official, without including any details about said homebrew subclass, and gets answers saying no it isn't. Tomorrow, UA comes out with a subclass called Fencer: those answers now look wrong despite still actually being right, the Fencer class being asked about was homebrew.
@GcL I got one before a major edit, and understood, but then I got a second. Like I said, I don't pay them much mine, but I had no idea where it came from
@GcL I don't think the issue we are facing is a clean dichotomy where we must oonly either remove all context or keep the link. Your meta answer is an example of an alternate solution.
This means we should be identifying the content of the subclass, not just its name: they are not asking about just any subclass with the name Fencer, they are asking about this particular Fencer subclass, this homebrew one right here.
@Rubiksmoose Do you think that it likely that UA will have a Fencer class? The content can be copied freely from the site if you don't want to direct traffic to it or help it's search engine page rank.
@Rubiksmoose Whoever posted that answer is out of their mind. CC licenses are communism! /S
@doppelgreener Okay. So the content is important. Next question is what to do in order to reference the content. What is your opinion about linking to a site that distributes pirated material?
@doppelgreener So the link has to go. I'm on board with that. I didn't like that link very much anyway. It's not like it was one to the past or questing for Zelda.
@GcL has to might be a bit strong. This appear to be a case where several policies and site guidelines are butting up against each other. Namely avoiding piracy and keeping questions clear and functional. That is why it is good to take it to meta.
Since there is no author described on the page for that homebrew, clear attribution probably requires identifying the site — i.e. linking to the homebrew page. — doppelgreener ♦31 secs ago
I've stumbled upon a character idea which has quite the potentially to screw someone if they run from you, and I want to know if it is legal in the rules.
A high elf rogue/cleric with the booming blade cantrip and war caster. In theory you get the damage from the weapon, sneak attack (if not use...
In Monster Manual 295-298 it talks about PCs becoming Vampires. In regards to the Vampire stat block:
Multiattack. The vampire makes two attacks, only one of which can be a bite attack.
Because of the word "can", would it be possible to assume that it also could choose not to? Meaning for t...
I'd have to double check actually if that would work
oh
Interestingly, only with the very recent release of Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes is it possible to use true polymorph to obtain an ability score of 30 if you transform into a leviathan. — RubiksmooseMay 20 '18 at 21:19
@Carcer Now I'm trying to figure out if you could get to 30 without stacking tomes (like only being allowed to read one)
Level 20 Barbarian with a Hammer of Thunderbolts and one reading of Manual of Gainful Exercise gets 30 Strength. I don't think there is any other way (without the use of high-power rewards like artifacts and epic boons)
@Rubiksmoose Despite being somewhat out of love with Apocalypse World at the moment, I went to browse the list they have of other PbtA titles to see if they have another Western for us
I just realized that a Divination Wizard with the Hammer of Thunderbolts would be the ultimate patient giant assassin. You wait for the day when you get a 20 and a <10 for your portents and you ensure a one-hit-kill against any giant.
Yeah, if you wanted to hit the plot beats of "a Western" you could probably just reskin most of '77, since that decade's home to a lot of Westerns.
The explicitly 70's popcult stuff (Glam and the Rocker) probably wouldn't make the jump but the rest could pretty easily be adapted into a story about the outsiders of the "Old West".
@Rubiksmoose It's got Native erasure, sadly; it at least mentions there should be Natives but their plot justifies keeping their presence in the game to an absolute minimum.
Im making my version of a cow level, premise is the town has a weird pest that the country has never seen before and has sent in the party to prevent the pest from spreading. It cleans cows to the bone and makes people appear to go mad. Whats actually happening is the Ghost King of Cows has been summoned by leprechauns who ride farie dragons
leprechauns being the pest, FD causing "madness" by using their illuions to make people trick themselves into thinking they are going mad
The Ghost King of Cows is raising a cow army to take over the land of the living with Ghost Cows. Upon being defeated, a portal to the cow level opens up with no way to close it from our side
Leprechauns spend the entire time messing with the players, leprechauns feed the players misinformation and act like annoying tricksters
the actual cow level I haven't designed yet, im still in brainstorming stage overall
