12:16 AM
@BESW Is Chateau Marmont wrapped, or still on a back burner?

@nitsua60 ...that's not ringing a bell.

I think he is just making a joke because we used that phrase
it's a restaurant I think

@BESW I thought you ran something set in that "Golden Age of Hollywood" chateau...?

Oh, right! Yeah, that's the new headquarters of the Amaterasu organization.

12:45 AM
Ah, so that is Ameratsu. Got it.

Yes! It's the Weird Stuff campaign using Atomic Robo rules as a foundation, where the Amaterasu organization is an ancient order devoted to "Using weird stuff so weird stuff won't use you," leveraging magic and mad science to protect the world from magic and mad science.

user15026
That sounds fantastic

But our latest major adventure involved recovering a lost moon-sized Atlantean generation ship, the inside of which has mutated to become a Masters of Umdaar world, with the unexpected side effect of destroying the world's electronic infrastructure.
An apocalypse was averted by the timely intervention of Weird Stuff all over the world, but the Pacific Northwest was a significant casualty so Amaterasu had to relocate its headquarters, which involved a team-up with an old frenemy whose cult controls Chateau Marmont.
In our last mission before the hiatus, we accidentally left the greater LA area without power because after the electronic apocalypse the city had been powered by the Enterprise warp core on a Hollywood sound stage, which functioned as if it were real so long as the actors on the set stayed in character.
But when we went to investigate a malfunction on the set, things snowballed and wound up with William Shatner channeling the power of his ego to turn the soundstage into a fully functioning USS Enterprise and leaving Earth on a spaceship powered by acting.

lol
you make it sound like we are really weird
:P

1:04 AM
I didn't even mention the Musketeers or the spaceship powered by a nuclear goldfish.

lol

1 hour later…
2:30 AM
hey there @Pixie

@Shalvenay Hey.

how're things going?

@BESW A spurious honor. :v But, yes, I think I likely am resident Maid expert around these parts.
@Shalvenay I'm alright, you?

@Pixie doing alright here

Just got done streaming more Digimon with friends. We're near the end of the second season (not 02, but the first Vamdemon/Myotismon arc), and it got... weirder than I remembered.
@MikeQ Yes, there's actually an adventure scenario like this in the book!

2:34 AM
@Pixie lol

Let me take a look at it to make sure I'm remembering right...
I also ran my own scenario of Maid once where the mistress of a manor hired a party of (maid) adventurers to take care of the dungeon that popped up in her basement, and it went pretty well.

that was the one on one of the chats here right?

Nah, this was a oneshot I did with my usual group.
I did Pony Maid here, by request. :v
Ah, there are actually two scenarios in here with that theme. The first is called Be Our Demon King! and the second is called Rise of the Demon King. A snippet from Be Our Demon King:
> Special Rules
For this scenario, the maids are each experts in different fields that are pertinent to managing the dungeon. They receive special bonuses based on their fields of expertise[...].

oh

And a few fields of expertise are provided, though you could run this type of game easily just with the basic mechanics of the system.

2:43 AM
you managed to do the pony maid one?
I seem to recall plans for it but I don't remember seeing it get done

Yeah. It wasn't my best, as I failed to realize that the rules detail both cooperative and adversarial methods of play; my groups have always gravitated to cooperative play automatically, so I didn't expect it when there were different player expectations, and it sorta broke down a bit during the game. But hopefully it was at least somewhat fun for those involved.
Ah, the only thing about Maid is that the system assumes a scenario where there is an authority figure who is above the PCs (or the other PCs, as someone in the group can play the authority figure as well) and can issue them orders, but who is mechanically weaker than their subordinates. That plus light whackiness are the really definite things about the setting for a game of Maid; the rest can be flavored however you like.

ah
I do remember seeing the transcripts for a game of it you ran
but I don't think it was the pony one

hmm, I don't know if I have transcripts for any of the other games I've run, but I might have had excerpts from the dungeon one closer to when I initially ran it
Skype ate the logs.

3:03 AM
@trogdor I left you a note in Discord.

3:16 AM
@BESW oh didn't I answer that?
@Pixie oh i meant one in one of these chats
Probably the Back Room

@trogdor Hmm, Pony Maid is the only one I ran here that I can recall.

Ok
Maybe I just didn't notice the theme or forgot it

@trogdor Nooo?

@BESW it's the time I can show up today right?

Yeah.

3:20 AM
I admit it was a short answer but I did answer it
So,...... ?
That's weird oh well
I just have to get a little errand done first
It will probably take just over an hour

11 hours later…
2:20 PM
Hey dudes

Hey Luke!

What's up?

Yesterday (and technically until tomorrow, but not for me) Castlefest, one of the biggest outdoors fantasy fairs in the Netherlands.

@Anaphory Awesome! All I have is a neighborhood block party today.

Now trying to recover from a day out in the heat&sun :-)
Doesn't sound bad either.

2:23 PM
@Anaphory That's a good idea. It's constrained within one block of a street, and I have a fear of crowds.

Oh, did you manage?

I don't know yet. I'm fine in school, which is more people in a smaller space. GTG.

@LukeSommers Ah, somehow I parsed that as past, not future, and thought you had already been there. Good luck then!

3:24 PM
Hello!

You're a raccoon. You're caught up in the high-stakes world of LA street racing. It takes six of you to drive a car. Welcome to CRASH PANDAS. (Grab the PDF from my patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/20172582)

3:37 PM
Oh my dear lord yes, I need this rpg thing, it just sounds like the most fun idea i've seen in a while

@Ghiojo Have you seen Honey Heist?

No I haven't, not very lectured in Rpgs in general so, yeah

Same person in fact
You might also like Lasers & Feelings by One Seven Design; it's a Star Trek TOS parody.

Oh dear, that's fun aswell

@Ghiojo hiya =)

3:46 PM
o/ Thanks for responding to my question n.n

i've played both lasers & feelings and honey heist and had a blast with both

Am sure you did, they sound like awesome games to play in vacations with my friends, honestly
Hmm, Am planning still a bit of the Party's first session, now that the Bloodhunter player left... Do y'all think that putting 9 Enemies for 4 people with 2 npcs to help is a lot? They are all lvl 1.

Kinda want to show them the world is dangerous more than telling them, ya know, make sure even the characters understand the type of world they live in

@doppelgreener (is that a laser pun?)
@Ghiojo Depends what the enemies are. Rats, probably not a problem. Skeletons, a bit challenging. Zombies, cultists, bandits, would be tough.

@nitsua60 it is not. but it could be!

Basically, The world has soldiers that deserted and they'd be attacked by:

One Bandit Knight: 20Hp, 12Str, 8Dex, 10 In every other stat. 15AC and 1d10 dmg

4 Bandits, 2 archers, 2 Warriors, all with 8HP 1d6 Dmg with shortbows and swords.

6 Kobolds with 1d6 Dmg Shitty spears and slings
They'd be aided by 2 town guards with 20HP, 14 Str, 12 Dex, 10 In every other stat. and 1d6 Weapons.
I really don't care what the enemies are using, they are all using shit tier armors and weapons, and the knight's armor is very used and etc etc.
Sorry, 4 Kobolds now
Not 6

3:58 PM
just a heads up, please avoid swear words in chat :)

Oh, okay, apologies, I tend to swear a lot But I'll do my best

We try to avoid swearing here to keep the room tone friendly & welcoming. It helps when contentious topics break out to already be starting from a very relaxed baseline. We'd appreciate your assistance keeping things that way. o/

Mhm, I know, that's why I said I'll do my best to avoid it n.n

thanks :)

But yah, The Bandit knight used to do 1d12 but... Yyyeah. In the playtests he one shot one of the characters
That with me ignoring the Horse's hability to trample

4:02 PM
welp, that is definitely a lot then. :P

Why is Cavalry so underrated in D&D?

that means it'll be 3v9 soon, then maybe 2v8 the next turn.

Mhm, well, they got a Druid with Thunderwave so.
The druid can honestly 1 shot half of the enmies in their turn if they go kamikaze

@Ghiojo That's a big force coming their way. That, in and of itself, isn't necessarily a bad thing. (I, personally, prefer "overpowering" encounters because I feel like it's more interesting to have that space available to play monsters poorly, rather than "needing to play them optimally" just to give the party a bit of a challenge.)
But the thing that pops out at me is that to ~balance~ it you've put in two allied NPCs who are stronger than the party members. That feels off.

Well, I would do that, but then, The bandits aren't really bandits they are... kind of deserted soldiers, they are actually gonna advance in formation, 2 spears, sword behind, archers on the flanks, Open middle to charge with Cavalry
They are experienced soldiers at least the humans are
(Cause basically in the history of this world, plague and wars happened, soldiers deserted of the sheer horribleness of the situation, causing soldiers to turn to a life of banditry, etc, even knights did so)
I am planning to make them do bad moves, specially the Kobolds, but if the archers get a nat 1, they are shooting their own friends.
And if the players are getting mauled by like, half of the party is dead but they kill the knight or a good ammount of them, I'll make them start running away.

4:09 PM
It's kind of an issue of players feeling like they can have meaningful input, or agency. You've provided an over-powerful encounter and NPCs to compensate, but a solution is to de-escalate and provide a more mid-power encounter.

Mhm, I don't plan on them to fail or the like, but I am planning to give them a scare, you know, make them win but have them quite hurt afterwards, you know, kind of a warning that, while they are powerful fighters, this world is still dangerous and so on
I will probably put one Kobold less, 8 on 6 seems more reasonable
but if not, i'll keep it as 9 on 6 and have the Kobolds be very bad at fighting

@doppelgreener the way I've handled that in the past if I had to is have the powerful NPC fight the powerful enemy on the side while I ran the encounter like normal. Kinda movie style where the mentors fight each other and the apprentices fight each other. Worked okay once the players got the message

@doppelgreener Hm, if two players choose “5: accelerate”, do they accellerate 2 steps or one?

that can work!
@Anaphory they stack. if all six of you accelerate, you accelerate x 6.

VROOOOOOM!

4:24 PM
i'd consider it to be the raccoons pushing extra hard on the accelerator together

I need to play more Grant Howitt games. I've only played Honey Heist so far.

like i imagine turning should be able to occur at faster increments than merely 30 degrees, right? you're street racers, you can't manage that. you also need to brake faster than gentle deceleration. i don't think it holds up if the actions don't stack.

Makes sense!

4:43 PM
Me, screaming: WHILE THE CATS ARE AWAY, THE MICE WILL PLAY!

Me, while all i'm doing is accelerating: "FASTER! ITS FAST OR NOTHING YOU COWARDS!!"

There's no such thing as block! You dodge or you die!
So, for multiclassing, if you're just doing a 1 or 2 level dip, what classes are best? I'd think Fighter and Warlock.
Perhaps Artificer if you are using UA. Maybe Cleric?
Also, anyone else plan your character's leveling beforehand?

@Ghiojo LOL
"WHY DO YOU KEEP ACCELERATING" "WHY WOULD I NOT"

Should I go Level 7 fighter/2 warlock or level 6 fighter/3 warlock?
Pact Boon and another spell, which could be second level vs. +1d6 to all saving throws...

are there features at levels 8-9 of fighter or 4-5 of warlock you're particularly interested in?

F8 gives me an ability score improvement, but W4 does the same, plus another cantrip and spell known.
GTG.
Maybe kinda sorta here

Q: Do D&D Lore Questions Need To Specify A Setting?

mxyzplkWe have various folks who ask D&D lore questions, and they get forced to pick a setting in the same way we force people to choose a rules edition, or have their question closed. In the history of the Forgotten Realms, has a Nightmare ever been cleansed of evil? is a recent example. From a certa...

6:06 PM
Grr... should do chores, want to watch Under the Tuscan Sun. Oh, the dilemmas of modern life.

do chores, then watch under the tuscan sun and feel even better for it

Going to listen to Dan Carlin while I do the chores. That'll get me moving. (Oh, virtue bundling.)
@doppelgreener btw, I heard an interview with Eddie Izzard the other day (but the interview's from a year ago) talking about running for parliament. It looks like they won--any report on how he seems to be doing?

Not sure! Looks like someone stepped down on Mar 31 and Eddie replaced them on April 1 this year (and I'm sure that dates tickles him pink) and the next election is ... sometime around now. He's not in a public position, but in an organisation that oversees one of the political parties.
So by the measure that nobody's talking specifically about him much, he's probably doing OK.

6:22 PM
@doppelgreener Interesting... so maybe lost the MP seat but continuing to move into politics.
(I assume the interview was about a year ago... he was talking about liking Al Franken's book and career in a way that I think makes a lot of sense in 2017 but probably would raise eyebrows now?)

6:38 PM
@doppelgreener "BUT WE ARE GONNA CRASH!!" "WE ARE REACHING LIGHT SPEED FOR ALL I CARE" Keeps Accelerating in his turn

hey there @Ghiojo, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)
hey there as well @Delioth

Hello! Thank you, I honestly only realised the site had a chat till I saw it mentioned in one answer for a question lol
Also by the way @nitsua60 about your answer earlier on my question, I do have to say I forgot to mention that I sat down with everyone individually to discuss the campaign's and my expectations before we even started doing the characters so they knew what they were getting into, etc etc.
I think that's been one of the little constant advice I've seen for new DMs, to set expectations, etc

@Ghiojo Yeah, I got that. But before assuming I've communicated/set expectations "correctly" I always like to check whether there was a loss of fidelity somewhere in the communication steps (a) what I intend, (b) what I say, (c) what I understand to have said, (d) what they heard, (e) what they understood, (f) what they recall.

Yep, that's also true

Lotsa places that process can go off the rails!

6:49 PM
Mhm! indeed n.n

@nitsua60 yep, that fits my recollection, he didn't win the election he ran in

Hmm, Question, on the first session, would you recommend overworking the things that are gonna be done? Or not? I mean, as in, should I plan more than what I think the session would last in case people skip certain things?
Because as of now I have the presenting of characters, the attack of the bandits, then some time in the actual city to meet merchants and the like, tavern owner (It's gonna be a city that they are gonna find themselves coming back to a lot) do some objectives some of them have, etc, and then a speciffic attack that hopefully would make them be paid and asked for their help for, as they are a group that have habilities that deffinetly stand out, etc etc.

Have these players played together before?

But I don't know if that would be enough for the 6-8 hour session, or If I should really keep going and just do as much of the encounter.
Yyes
The problem is
One time, (This is from experience of another person Dming) They literally stalled 2 hours on being on a ship doing everything possible until the DM got tired
And other times, they literally stormed through things they didn't care
and led to an entire city getting destroyed, a campaign i was in and was one of the only cahracters who wanted to stay to help
Now, yeah, the DM also gave us little reason to help, the guards were kinda zealous in a place where magic wasn't really allowed all that much unless you were controlled, hence why people didn't wanna help
Hence why I want to avoid it by the city being how it is, It was funded to literally protect people and the guards are meant to be a bit harsh but overall, you know, human beings
That won't question everything you got on you like if they were some kind of Australian border patrol
But yeah
They are kind of a difficult to track group from my own experience

7:28 PM
@Ghiojo Which campaign are you playing?

8:05 PM
All of the campaigns i played in were custom, I am currently making a custom one aswell, I don't really do books that much @LukeSommers

@Ghiojo Oh, ok.
Can Sneak Attack be combined with Booming Blade?

8:22 PM
@doppelgreener That Pokemon thread might be better suited for the Arqade?

@Axoren it's not even really on topic for arqade, because it's inviting a discussion
it's not on topic for stack exchange

Yeah, it is kind of weird.

There are specific game design reasons for Pokemon doing that, and specific game design reasons for RPGs doing that. There are also reasons in the Pokemon world doing that, which are different reasons. The broadness of scope they're dealing with here is too much, and really they just want to talk about reasons this might happen in anything.

Have any of you ever used Undercommon in a campaign before?

@LukeSommers In the Underdark and between Drow
It's great for when villains need to have an A and B conversation and the party can C themselves out of it.

8:30 PM
@Axoren Alright. I have a human rogue who has Undercommon as an additional language, but I've never seen it used. I like it for its flavor, but I'm wondering if I should choose something more useful.

In a campaign that never goes to the Underdark, it's pretty useless

@Axoren Thanks. Any ideas on what I should choose?

Alternatively, Necril, Abyssal, and --god, what's it called?-- Hellvoice?
Those are great for understanding speakers from some of the 3 most common enemy archtypes

@Axoren Necril is Pathfinder. This is for 5e, sorry.
Also, you may be thinking of Deep Speech? If you're thinking PF, Aklo?

If there's no undead language
Then Deep Speech is a good late-game language
Generally, most campaigns tend to converge towards Mind Flayers
Whether or not they're the main antagonist, they're SOMEWHERE
Doing SOMETHING
That people don't like
Draconic is also good.

8:34 PM
@Axoren Perhaps. Maybe Abyssal or Infernal?

Definitely Abyssal or Infernal. In 5e, they share a script, so you can read both if you find texts in either.

I'll probably go with Infernal then.

Abyssal, Infernal, Deep Speech, Draconic, and Primordial (if something Elemental Evil)

@Axoren Don't have a campaign yet, just making characters.

You really need to have an idea of where the campaign is going to go to be able to pick useful languages
But the best part about 5e is that you can just pay to learn a language once it becomes relevant

"Go Swashbuckler." Lol
Best build plan

@Axoren I just wanted to remind myself to do that if I ever use her. I have a character with a much more in-depth plan too.

I remember planning a wizard with like 4 different multiclass

orcpub2.com/pages/dnd/5e/characters/17592274936386?frame=true My fighter who's plan I'm oh-so-proud-of.
@Axoren Really?

Don't take offense at me laughing at that, btw
I just like how succinct it was

8:39 PM
@Axoren It's fine, I understand.

I think it was Diviner 8, Fighter 4, Divine Soul 4, Warlock 4

@Axoren Nice. Warlock and Fighter are nice to dip into. M.I. is also really fun.
I also like building dual-wielding characters, if you couldn't tell.

8:56 PM
Dual Wielding is nice, but I personally like the idea of a Polearm Master or a Battlerager for getting that extra Bonus Action attack per round.

Ok, so: Level 5 Rogue + M.I. = 1d6+3 weapon damage, +1d6 Hex, +3d8 Booming Blade (If they move) +3d6 Sneak Attack. Average 34 damage.
@Axoren I guess, but I don't have a STR based rogue.
GTG, talk later/tomorrow.

2 hours later…
11:22 PM
@doppelgreener I mean, it could actually be on-topic for WB (I'm writing a story in the Pokemon universe and need a reason why everyone only carries 6 pokemon and uses one at a time), but if they've decided to start having actual standards it's probably better to encourage it.
