This moonblade question is a tough one.

@NautArch I would think that "functions as a vorpal sword" refers not to the attack/damage bonus but rather the "decapitate on crit" feature.

@Yuuki That's my thought on the intent, but not sure how/if you can prove it

Well, isn't the only vorpal weapon in 5e actually a vorpal greatsword?
Probably doesn't change anything.

@Yuuki Weapon (any sword that deals slashing damage)
I think it's more that there appears to be a hard limit on magic items of +3
but that's not written anywhere...it just is.
@Rubiksmoose You went way more in depth than I :)
have an updoot

@NautArch daww thanks :) Yeah I guess I'm just in an answering mood today for whatever reason. I've barely written any answers the last couple of months actually.

6:23 PM
@NautArch DMG page 285 details a process for creating a custom magic item. There is a table on that page which lists the maximum bonus for an item by rarity. +4 is actually the cap in that table. Specifically for legendary items

@Rubiksmoose I didn't even consider adding in the obvious rule on attunement. That's the 2nd time I've missed the obvious :/
@Adam Hmm, that doesn't help :)
It's a good question they posited.

@NautArch Hey at least you read the question correctly lol. I read it as a completely different question at first. (you can see the first edit history for that lol)

@NautArch It might not help in answering the question. I was just pointing out that it in fact is written somewhere. It's in the DMG

@Adam Heh :) good to know, though. I'm fairly certain I know what the answer should be, just have no idea how to prove it.
@Adam Went to sageadvice.eu to do a moonblade search, but this was waiting for me.

6:35 PM
@Rubiksmoose You have 14 answers this month so far, not counting today. You have odd standards.

6:54 PM
@GreySage You should have see me a few months ago. My rep chart looks like it hit an asymptote around then lol.
@NautArch @Adam I gave the vorpal Q a shot.

@Rubiksmoose I like it, but it still hinges on a lot of assumptions.

@NautArch I mean sure, but sometimes things aren't clear in the books so you have to use a bit of common sense. I'm not sure I relied on any assumptions other than "each rune should be designed to be roughly the same power"
@NautArch Reading the Vorpal Rune the more powerful way makes that one rune the same power as at least 4 other runes combined.

I agree, but it's hard to counter a response of "So what?"

@NautArch Well when the language is iffy and there are two interpretations, do you go with the one that makes the rune fit in with all the other runes or the one that makes it stand out like mount everest in the middle of a field?
There is literally no way to "prove" this conclusively I recognize that, but when one interpretation is ridiculously powerful and the other makes a lot of sense and fits exactly how the rest of the features of the item, does that not seem at all compelling?

yeah, I think the best we can do in the absence of an official answer is logically reason out why it doesn't make sense for vorpal/defender runes to give a +3 and their main effect
someone tweet Crawford :P

7:06 PM
@Rubiksmoose I hear ya. I'm just worried that if someone is looking for a loophole, they'll take the loophole without something to really challenge it besides common sense.
But I guess it was good enough for GaelL

What is funny is that not only would the Vorpal replace getting the first rune 3 times, but it also completely replaces it entirely. Not really much point to have two different runes give the same effect only one gives it much better.
@NautArch I don't follow exactly. What do you mean?

While I think that's the right answer RAI, as a counterpoint to your answer moose: In antimagic field "a longsword, +1 in the sphere functions as a nonmagical longsword."

@Rubiksmoose I"m bordering on being Not Nice with explaining it :)
basically, munchkins gonna munchkin without a clear constraint.

@NautArch Sure, but isn't my asnwer arguing for restraint? Or are you saying that by admitting that there is no clear RAW I'm giving ammo to people who say that it does get that +3?

I asked Crawford. Maybe he will respond (though I doubt it since he's probs have to look up the rules. No one plays with moonblades)

7:12 PM
@Rubiksmoose the latter :) You have made a good case for what the constraint should be, but because it isn't an actual constraint.

@NautArch gotcha gotcha. Well I've never known a munchkin who was dissuaded from pursuing a loophole by a lack of answer.

@NautArch munchkins gonna munchkin even with clear constraint, and if thats the game they play good for them, if that isn't the game they play, then the DM will shut it down.

@GreySage And yeah I think a good DM would look at that answer and provide a good tool to shut it down if they wanted to.
@NautArch I could have made it so much worse by inserting my original answer in the beggining as a RAW answer which was arguing that it would take the +3

@Rubiksmoose aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

@NautArch I still can if you really want me to ;)

7:19 PM
I don't understand why you all assume it's a munchkin question. Could just be trying to clarify what it means (could happen in game easily)

I wonder how many more questions I have to answer and get accepted today by Gael before I trigger some sort of anti-collusion function in the SE system lol.
Do you have the answer I seek ? (I'm asking this series of questions to properly answer another question about the theoretical maximized damage you can do on a single hit. Been working on an optimized answer for days now) — Gael L 33 mins ago
I still don't actually think it is muchkiny though really.

@DavidCoffron I'm not assuming it's a munchkin question - but it could be used by one.

I mean I already answered the maximum damage question with moonblade

And I upvoted the question (which I don't' do when I think it's a munchkin question)

A: What is the most damage that can be done in a single melee attack?

David Coffron∞ Well not actually infinity but arbitrarily large. Since you said any official items are allowed, the answer keeps getting higher the more time you have to setup. This is because of Moonblade. Moonblades gain a new rune for each master it has served, meaning that with more former masters, it w...

@Rubiksmoose The exact numbers/cutoffs/calculations aren't known to us, but I'd be shocked--shocked! I say--if you were close to tripping anything. The list of who they've given votes to reads like a who's-who of 5e posters over the last year.

Hey @Rubiksmoose - For the record I think you're ultimately correct about the moonblade/vorpal thing. I just think it's unprovable.

@screamline I'm with you there, but, on the other hand not every answer has to be provable, just backed up. And I think I meet that threshold at least.
But yeah, I thought it was a good enough and solid enough reasoning to stand up.
@screamline (also I hope you didn't take my comment as anger or something) I just was trying to avoid an argument to break out in my comments lol
@nitsua60 phew lol Yeah I'm sure the've fine tuned that stuff quite a bit by now.

@Rubiksmoose No worries. We're good.

9:07 PM
@nitsua60 wait what do I love so much?

@trogdor Dragons?

wait how did anyone here figure that out?
I hid that so well
:P

Burninating the pesants and thatch straw cottages?

shhhhh
I see I need to be more covert

user15026
Ninja dragons?

9:17 PM
A quick Google tells me there are two films named "Ninja Dragon."

lol
we exist, you can't prove we don't

One of them is a 1986 Godfrey Ho film. This sounds wonderful.

I can't wait for the Trogdor Board Game to ship.

lol
no not a board game too! where is my concealment?

@trogdor Krynn =D

9:27 PM
oooooh

Q: Can I have a dragon player character in D&D 5e?

Zythiel DiezelIs it possible to create a playable character who's a dragon in D&D 5e? Not a dragonborn, but an actual dragon. I'm new to D&D and planning on playing D&D 5e because it's the newest.

but a monk or rogue
Basically Ninja Dragom

9:44 PM
lol
it does sound like it doesn't work too well in D&D but I still appreciate the sentiment

Okay, apparently Ninja Dragon is one of Godfrey Ho's most restrained and coherent cut-and-paste jobs. I'm minorly disappointed.

Q: Balance implications of removing unseen attacker advantage when mutually unseen

VigilThe rules for unseen attackers (PHB p. 194-195) specify that attacking a creature that cannot see you = advantage, and attacking a creature you cannot see = disadvantage: When you attack a target that you can't see, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. This is true whether you're guessin...

Can I get a sanity check on this question? It doesn't seem to be internally consistent

@GreySage It seems to make sense. Since advantage and disadvantage nullify, you could have two attackers who can't see each other roll as if they could
The GM wants a houserule where if two creatures can't see each other, they'd both be rolling with disadvantage when attacking each other
So that means adjusting the "you get advantage if they can't see you" rule

10:17 PM
> Object Impermanence. You can use Will to overcome obstacles by treating things you can't sense as if they don't exist, but you can also be compelled for short-term memory loss about things you can't sense.

@BESW "I don't believe in demons, therefore I overcome its power"

But only if you close your eyes.
...and now I have Chumbawamba's "Amnesia" stuck in my head.

Could be worse, I've had "Ra Ra Rasputin" stuck in mine for the past few weeks

lol

@MikeQ Oh, man, that's not even the best Rasputin song or the best Boney M. song to get stuck in one's head.

user15026
10:24 PM
@MikeQ I'll see your Rasputin, and raise you Baby Shark

user15026
(I blame my sister and my 8 month old nephew)

@Ash I fold

user15026
giggles

baby shark?

user15026
He got a shark themed hooded towel this week while they were camping, so now I get a lot of Baby Shark singalong snapchats

user15026
(It's one of those little kid songs that is just SO CATCHY)

oh ok
now I have to know

user15026
I apologize if it gets in your head and never lets go

lol

I can replace it if it gets bad.

10:31 PM
uh I was lied to, there are more sharks in this
lol

user15026
laughs I apologize for the misrepresentation of shark numbers

too many sharks, just too many, there's like 5

Spoilers!

oh no
I am a bad person

user15026
Then I might be the worst, for bringing it in here ;)

10:49 PM
lol

11:15 PM
@Ash: One of my friends has a daughter and she apparently loves that song
(baby daughter, obviously)

user15026
11:32 PM
@V2Blast It seems to be the current hit among the smaller smallpeople I know

user15026
Unrelated, but I just read this thread on Twitter, and I feel like it is a good thread that brings up some issues I've had with various games friends have tried to get me to partake in, and maybe it will help someone else.

user15026
Game design thoughts. I don't like games that ask players to construct clever narratives to get a mechanical benefit. I don't like the model of 'if you give a cool description of your action, you get a bonus die! if your description is AMAZING, you get two!'

user15026
(There's more to it than that tweet, you'll have to click through)

so far I have to agree with this too

11:49 PM
One thing I liked about D&D 4e was that it did a great job at bypassing the "blank page" problem by providing short, flavorful but moderately generic non-mechanical descriptions on each power.
But of course it's also okay to have games like Wushu where the point is to practice adding detail to your narration; it's only really a problem when the game is chosen for a table that doesn't want that stance, or the table isn't aware that other games with other stances are available to them.
But I will absolutely say that I think games like Wushu and InSpectres and Golden Sky Stories bypass a major endemic problem that tweet thread mentions: judgement.

user15026
Yeah, I'm not opposed to things encouraging detail, it's just the judgement that sits yucky with me

Because Wushu doesn't care how good your details are, just how many you have. And Golden Sky Stories rewards you for making people laugh OR being helpful, and encourages everyone to be very generous about it.
Whereas mechanics like 5e's point system often turn into "guess what the GM likes."
I think a major problem with RPG design in general, that's slowly starting to shift, is the idea that a single game system should be everything for everyone because a gaming group will only play one game for months at a time.
The more that RPG culture embraces "What shall we play tonight?" the more games will be able to flourish which work really well for particular peoples' situations.

user15026
I think that's why I've struggled - I can't seem to find a group that doesn't want a long drawn out campaign and like...those are good for people but I am happier with "hey lets tell a story for a bit and then a different story another time"

user15026
Locally it seems to be all the former :(
