12:04 AM
@SPavel no, like, opposite of the acid-class druid

@SPavel ha.ha.ha.ha.ha.ha.ha
@doppelgreener I wish I thought of that one

@Ben Do you have summoned creature, animal companion and Wild Shape statblocks ready?

Ben
12:29 AM
I am yet to choose my domain/animal companion, but if I did go with an animal companion, I was thinking of a hawk.
I am also a Skin Walker
I have a week to figure it out, but my experience of pathfinder is effectively zip.

12:47 AM
@aliettedb @gothytim I wish there was a #rpg set in the Xuya universe.
No, brain. Stop.
...okay but O this is a transhumanist setting I can sink my teeth into because it's all about families and ties of obligation and what that means in a collectivist caste society where nobles can have their ancestors' personalities talking to them through implants, and your great-aunt might be the space station you're living on, and the cleaning-bot might be working to buy its way out of indentured servitude.

1:08 AM
@BESW that last bit is a thing in the Culture series
Not the other stuff though

2 hours later…
2:39 AM
@trogdor There's a short Xuya story about a bot cleaning up a warship after a battle, and finding a surviving enemy who's violently anti-transhumanism but needs to convince the bot to smuggle him to safety.

3:08 AM
@BESW oh you linked that somewhere and I read it when you did

3 hours later…
5:58 AM
@BESW what did I come into?

@Helwar See tweet above: a Xuya RPG.

I know I know, I've seen the tweet. Still. wtf? xD

Xuya is a far-future setting about a interstellar empire based on Vietnamese culture, written by Aliette de Bodard.
It's got a strong transhumanist element, with the ability to transfer human consciousnesses into artificial bodies, to genetically engineer human-born people designed to be permanently bonded with spaceships and space stations as their controlling entities, and to preserve personalities as brain-interface implants. And it explores how those themes interact with a caste society that places great significance on ancestor veneration and family obligation.
Go read some Aliette de Bodard, she does awesome stuff.

Hum... there's a transhumanist RPG a friend of mine pushed a lot to play with us... It didn't appeal to me much and we ended up not trying it

I'm guessing it was Eclipse Phase.

6:10 AM
yeah, that name rings a bell

I found it mechanically overburdened.

@V2Blast One of the big issues is that the rule seems to state that whenever A could see B, in theory, B can't be hidden from A, which has all kinds of wonky outcomes.

I didn't even read the rules, the whole idea was not very attractive at the moment

And what I saw of the setting was... very typical of cynical capitalist cyberpunk.

And that seems to me to totally invalidate camouflage by crypsis, and while I think realism only has a second-class citizenship in DnD rules, this is an unusually large simplification.
There's a lizard in that image, and I probably wouldn't see it if I didn't know it was there, but I still can see it. Seems strange that it couldn't try to hide from me.

6:39 AM
@kviiri in the thumbnail, it looks like there is a hand to the right of the lizard. (Wrist, thumb and index finger). I now can't unsee it

@Helwar Yeah, Wikipedia wanted to use the picture to demonstrate crypsis of many different animals at once so they also included a halfling hand.

@BESW it's your fault I'm reading this uncannymagazine.com/article/hundred-seventy-storms instead of working. You should feel ashamed

Yes, fall down the rabbit hole of free amazing short stories.

@BESW it was fun to roll characters for but otherwise I agree

1 hour later…
7:58 AM
@BESW I've read it piece by piece, all i can't say is; where is the rest of the book! (nowhere, I know, but stil...)

8:19 AM
I've read The Tea Master and the Detective and On a Red Station, Drifting from the Xuya setting, they're quite good.
I've also recently finished her Obsidian and Blood trilogy and am trying to convince my brain that setting doesn't need to be made into an RPG either.

Haha, it's very weird. It's transhumanism but not completely?
They still have a body?

Transhumanism isn't limited to just removing a human consciousness from its fleshy brain and inserting it into digital media.
It's the vast array of possibility within the concept of using technology to deliberately assist the human body and mind to "evolve" beyond their current limitations.

@BESW well I considered changing one fleshy brain for another also transhumanism :)

8:52 AM
@BESW I'll add her to my list of shortstory-a-day, which is currently mostly composed of the Clarkesworld Magazine Podcast. Which should last me another half a year, I guess, but that doesn't mean I can't read something else somewhere in there.

@Anaphory Also Ursula Vernon.

There's different ways to approach it, but I think one of the clear lines we can draw is that a story is a transhuman story once humanity takes control of its own physical condition & evolutioin. Artificial body components are one part of that, being able to transfer one's mind is another.
There are probably ways to approach transhumanism which don't resemble that at all, too.

@BESW Ursula Vernon (and your pitching her) has started that list off. She'll feature on there regularly.

I have a story that's half written only (And at this pace, it will always be half written).
The world is kinda sorta post-apocaliptic. Humans built an AI that went bonkers (not exactly), that could control sub-atomic bots designed to improve human's quality of life. Cue in long war and arms race, and eventually the AI commits "suicide", but it's bots have already permeated everything.
So everything and everyone is intermingled with bots that are *mostly* blank. Coders can write applications that install on peoples bodies and can do several functions. The bots can intercept the information f

@Anaphory Yey!
Uncanny, Lightspeed, and Tor are also good sources for free short stories.

8:56 AM
Do any of them publish in podcast format? Because I found that works well for me even on days when I don't feel like reading.

@Anaphory you mean, someone reading it out loud a la audiobook?

Yes.

I don't know of any :S

Hmm. I'd have to check, as podcasts and I don't work well together.

@BESW Cheers, then I'll just look myself for the others.

Wonderful! More stories to listen to! I can do that.

Also the tor.com podcast tag which will lead you to other podcasts.
There are also some interesting RPG podcasts running around--some are Actual Plays, but some are more like talk shows with guests and such, about various aspects of RPGery.
A few years ago I listened to some about design.
(That's one of the first places I heard of Dog Eat Dog.)

I'm currently consuming that medium for short stories. At some point I'll be looking for 10- or 20-minute RPG podcasts to listen to on my way to work and back. This is not the day.
(That would be the talkshow-style then.)

I'm also trying to listen to Productivity Alchemy, but like I said, podcasts and I aren't a good match.

On my last job I could listen to podcasts.... I listened to Critical Role and the first Weel of Time book
while working
it this new job It distracts me too much
i'm either paying atention to the code or to what I am listening T_T

9:20 AM
@Helwar Yes. I listen to my short stories at the end of the day, when going to bed. Other times my concentration on text is elswhere, on code or papers (or here).

1 hour later…
10:32 AM
I'm not sure if my ginger ale is fermenting or not
Tension!

are you homebrewing?
for real? not in a RPG environment? :P

Yea! I used to do this very casually and with very limited equipment at the university, but this is the first time I've made ginger ale at home.

Tonight we had boring sandwiches and smoothies, but I made a hot mustard using yellow mustard as a base, with wasabi paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, honey, and ginger salabat powder.

We made some homemade wine too, it turned out pretty good. But ginger ale is where the money is for me. Alcohol doesn't really interest me that much, but ginger drinks aren't really a big thing around here and making it oneself is the best way to get the good stuff :)

Sounds tempting.
(I'd been having a lot of trouble finding wasabi paste that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup, but it turns out there's a bento-box lunch place that sells little packets of non-high-fructose wasabi to put on your musubi or whatever.)

10:39 AM
My favorite is this one really spicy 0.5% ABV by Fentimans, but it's over two euros for 33 cl here and available in only a few specific stores that I know of, so I'm trying to replace that with home-made stuff.

There's a canned ginger drink here that comes with cayenne pepper in. It's quite good.

pepper in a soft drink, sounds interesting

@kviiri I don't lke beer. But lately I've been loking into buying a kit and brewing mine, any recommendations? :P

10:55 AM
@Helwar I don't have a kit apart from my normal kitchen hardware, I don't know what specialized equipment one needs.
Well okay, that's not really true. I have buckets and airlocks, but they're for wine, not really suitable for small batches of ginger ale :P

haha

Grating the ginger root was surprisingly slow, I think I'll use an immersion blender the next time

11:39 AM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I was on for 62 consecutive days, but I forgot over the weekend!

What's wrong champ
For shame!

I spent all day Saturday with my mom and was barely on my phone.
Welp, I guess I don't need THIS site anymore....
;)
though, legit thinking about making an alarm on my phone to check in

11:57 AM
@goodguy5 ooooofff
the feels
I only have 2 golds in,.... oh wow 5 years now
and that was my first one
XD

I've got two Populist badges

lol

And both came by surprise really :D

I got Fanatic by surprise too actually,... I think
unless I actually went for it and just don't remember it that way
it could be that I got half way there and then went for it
5 years is a long time for remembering those details

12:36 PM
@goodguy5 Then you are not a Fanatic and do not deserve the badge

usually NOT being a fanatic is preferable though

The Fanatic badge is for people who wake up with trembling hands already reaching for their phone and racing to tap the RPG.se shortcut on their home screen

...or for those who made an autorefresh script.
yep, that happened, ask on Meta.SE

@Derpy unfollowed, blocked, reported
@Derpy delet this

if you prefer... That said, I think even shog9 once said he totally doesn't care.
fell free to remove the messages completely if you wish. Personally, I don't think they would do any harm, but that's just my opinion

1:01 PM
@Derpy no it's a meme

@SPavel How dare you! My hands were very calm as they race to open the link on my phone thank you very much.
Also, good [insert local time] to everyone!

@SPavel Ooo looks like an interesting read.

@Rubiksmoose It's adapted from a talk if you prefer to listen
But yeah it's a good read
The tl;dr is "don't ever try to code your own calendar"

@SPavel what fanatic actions are required to have the fanatic badge? xD

1:13 PM
@Helwar Open the site at least once a day for a year

@kviiri I just tackled the help-pile you pointed out, but I think the flag may have registered as "declined" since I didn't actually delete the comment to which it was attached. So's you know: I found it "helpful."

Or 100 days?

ugh, one of those

Something

I struggled with chrono.gg monthly award :P

1:13 PM
@SPavel 100 days

fanatic badge description

@Rubiksmoose 2ez nerf now

(don't tell that to @goodguy5) XD

T_T

@goodguy5 git gud

1:17 PM
DX

visiting the chat counts towars that badge? :P

@Helwar No, because the domain is chat.stackexchange.com and not rpg

@SPavel Sorry. Didn't get the joke. These last hour have been a little... annoying.
Broken tests and such, conflicting specs....
To be fair, I expect "烈" to appear on my forehead any second now.

@Derpy You mean you actually read the spec?
Please come work for me

@SPavel the spec I have. Which usually are written on the back of an old cheese wrapping paper.

1:29 PM
@Derpy What a coincidence, Old Cheese Wrapping Paper is the name of my JIRA board

@SPavel that is an intriguing idea.

OCWP-1: Foo the Bar
OCWP-2: Unfoo the Bar [BLOCKER] [URGENT]

@BESW Yes; based on my modest play experience with an Archfey Warlock, sprite familiar has a sweet spot with scouting and being invisible. (We only got to benefit from the "figure out something's alignment" skill once. That campaign is dormant, likely dead.

the worst I did was to call an interface module that had the ungrateful duty to work with an old, bug filled, poorly written repository... "public class HazmatGlove"

@nitsua60 I don't recall flagging any help piles lately

1:44 PM
@Shalvenay As written, alignment is not an optional rule. If you look in the PHB, it guides the player to choose an alignment. What mechanical impact alignment has is limited to such things as the Sprite's ability, a few of the legendary items that do damage to you if you are the wrong alignment, and so on.
@doppelgreener That's one of the best comments on cannibalism in RPG that I've seen. A keeper, thanks.
@kviiri What terms do you use when you flag a help pile?

@KorvinStarmast I dunno, I'd probably just flag the last comment with Other and "excessive comments" or somesuch
I don't really do that that often because help piles tend to sort themselves out fairly quickly... or maybe someone else keeps flagging them

2:06 PM
The most helpful way to do it is flag the most recent problematic comment and leave a custom message directing us to what to look at. For example, "Comments up to here can go."

@kviiri Oh, sorry. Then I mis-read the flag UI. As usual =(

@nitsua60 Maybe I was the one comment that got kept ^^'

@nitsua60 it's definitely going to get marked as declined if you dismissed the flags instead of deleting the comment.

@doppelgreener Yeah, someone (apparently not kviiri) flagged the first comment in a chain saying "hey, maybe trim out the help-pile" which I agreed with. So I deleted a bunch of other comments but left the flagged one, which I expect would auto-mark as declined when it really was helpful.

@nitsua60 did you leave the flagged one and dismiss the flags, or delete the flagged one (e.g. via a purge) then undelete it?

2:16 PM
Also, is it just me but do we have more help piles than before, during the last few months?

2:34 PM
@Rubiksmoose That's a cool idea for contingency to get a spell associated that you normally couldn't cast yourself.

We have that battle royale game tomorrow
Going to be weird, I assume :D

@NautArch Thanks! It was that discussion on dimension door and contingency that made me think of it actually. And the fact that this is actually something that I am thinking about doing in my own campaign. :)

@kviiri when it comes to royales, I prefer a Kir Royale

@Rubiksmoose why wouldn't the wizard be able to cast DD? Just doesn't know it?
@SPavel I prefer the royale with cheese.

@NautArch Actually it was just a tangential conversation nothing to do with combining magic items and DD. It was actually about whether DD could be used with contingency at all

2:42 PM
@NautArch Over a Kir? Disgusting.

@Rubiksmoose that seems legit. DD is a spell that can target you.

@NautArch That is the way I would rule as well. But because of 5e's... fantastic policy of not defining terms that really should be it is a bit ambiguous.
Jun 14 at 16:08, by Secespitus
@Rubiksmoose Contingency + Dimension Door in DnD 5e - possible or not?

@doppelgreener Alternately, you could define it as consuming a 4-42 pound metal ball normally used as ammunition.

@Rubiksmoose J.E. does bring up an interesting point regarding material. I updated my answer i to include with regard to your third question.

Jun 14 at 16:46, by nitsua60
@Secespitus I'm leaning toward allowing it. It's just annoying as hell that misty step has a "statblock" range of self and teleports you up to 30', where DD has a statblock range of 500' and teleports you to that point. And teleport has a range of 10 feet and teleports you and up to 8 other creatures via ranges further discussed.

2:49 PM
@Rubiksmoose But the targets are still the people moving, and as long as you are one of those people it seems legit.

I mean nowhere is that actually stated or defined to be fair (what the targets of the spells are). But I absolutely see no reason that it should not be allowed.

@Rubiksmoose IIRC, that has something to do with the mechanics of the spells in question but I can see how that creates problems.

To me, DD is giving you the range that you can move yourself to. You are clearly the target of the spell. I don't think Self needs to be on the target criteria (for instance, Bless would be a legit Contingency spell)

IIRC, misty step conjures ephemeral mist that surrounds the target (you) and transports it up to 30 feet. Dimension door creates a quasi-wormhole between you and a point you target up to 500 feet away. The range of teleport only applies if you're targeting an object, in which case it must occupy a 10-foot cube.

@NautArch Right, but then we get into the murkey waters of -> target == anyone affected by the spell -> All creatures in AOE are targets -> weird interactions with certain rules based on targeting.

2:58 PM
@Rubiksmoose I'd be less inclined for an AOE. That specifically targets an area and not a creature.
@Rubiksmoose But I am realizing something funny with the Ioun stone. Will post a question.

@NautArch Hence the difficulty here. Some AOEs actually explicitly refer to the creatures in it as targets (eg fireball). And some aspects of the rules strongly imply this interpretation is true for all AOEs as well.
@NautArch Best not be stealing my follow up questions ;P

@Rubiksmoose "A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. ". That sure seems like you are targeting a point.

@NautArch "Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one."
@NautArch Would this question happen to be about Ioun Stone casting and material components?

@Rubiksmoose Components in general and i included ring of spell storing as well. I don't know how many other items include identical language, but yes.

@NautArch Yup I know exactly where you are going and it is a good question.

3:07 PM
@Rubiksmoose hrm, yeah I guess that's true. But then I'd say you'd have to be included in that fireball as well.
@Rubiksmoose it's up (and self-answered).

@NautArch I mean if you are in the 20 ft radius you certainly would be.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, I'd probably be okay with that. Espeically since you'd most likely destroy the stone as well. A stone has AC 24, 10 hit points, and resistance to all damage.
Good chance that a fireball will drop more than 20 hp.

@NautArch How do magic item saving throws work in 5e?

@NautArch Here's where I again complain about how D&D's AC mechanic that combines avoidance and resilience.

@NautArch Wait are we talking about casting this from an Ioun Stone here? Because I was just talking about casting it normally. Also, who would include themselves in the area of their own fireball unless they had that evocation ability.

3:11 PM
@Rubiksmoose It happens. I've seen players do it before. Kinda insane but it does work when surrounded by enemies, especially if they're weak to fire.

@MikeQ Plus fireball is an option for sorcerer's wild magic, and i believe it is forced to be centered on the sorcerer

@MikeQ That's a good question :), but items that have a specific AC/HP and damage properties I'd rule would be considered objects. Do any objects have saving throws?
@Rubiksmoose Casting fireball to go with Contingency?

@NautArch I don't think so. But usually carried objects are not subject to damage? (I mean, usually the game specifies "unatended objects")

@Helwar I'd say the stone is an exception beacuse it can specifically be targeted and has HP.
@Rubiksmoose Ugh, is the question I posted a dupe?

hummm, the way I ruled it in my games (that's not RAW nor RAI but my own bias) is that AoE didn't harm Ioun stones, just because otherwise they would be destroyed every time you tried to use one in combat

3:23 PM
@doppelgreener yeah, I left the original comment alone and dismissed, which I figured would auto-unhelpful it

see? my own common sense did something good for once!

@NautArch Ooo maybe. Hmmm.

> While an Ioun stone is deployed (circling) it is considered a worn item except as noted otherwise. So it would not be damaged by area-of-effect spells, etc.
I think it has to be specifically targeted.

@Rubiksmoose I think it is, but i'll let the community decide (or another gold badge.) And while I think it is unlikely components are required, I'llt ake my downvotes because I think it's possible that these items are different.

3:30 PM
@NautArch That is fair, though personally I think it would be a pretty awful ruling. Material components are bad enough to track once. Making them be tracked again seems painful. Also very much against the flavor of the item IMO.

@Yuuki Yeah, that's my reading, too.

@NautArch You make a good point, the specific language of "as if you cast the spell", carries with it some questions about what parts of casting a spell are included

@DavidCoffron Yup, and they specifically called out the other aspects that the magic item does not provide (but come from the original caster)

@DavidCoffron Surely we can all agree that the intent was probably not to make people pay twice though right?

@Rubiksmoose likely.

3:32 PM
@nitsua60 yup that would make it declined

Consider the case of the caster who stores a spell to use it themselves later. They have to pay again even though they actually did cast it the first time!

Delete Vs dismiss are our only two options for handling a comment flag and they map exactly to helpful Vs declined

@NautArch What about Glyph of Warding then? That spell also uses the "spell is cast" wording. would that also have to have some components provided?

@Rubiksmoose @NautArch another concern is with Spellcasting focus. If I cast a spell into my RoSS, can I use my wand for the "recast"? Is it still a wizard spell? And does that mean if I cast the spell into my cleric's RoSS he would need to use the default components on the 'recast' or could he use a wand since it was originally cast as a wizard spell?

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, I don't think it's likely the intent, but i could see a case for it that it is. YOu don't need to spend a spell slot again, but you do need the components. I dunno.
@DavidCoffron per the language, the spellcasting modifier/type is from the original caster and not whomever is casting it out of the item.
@Rubiksmoose that's a good question. Given that the glyph doesn't talk about spellcasting atttack/dc, etc. I'd say it's more like Contingency in that the spel lhas been cast, it's just waiting to be released. But I could also see a case that that is the same mechanic for a Ring of Spell Storing/Ioun stone.

3:48 PM
@NautArch I'm very in favor of the latter interpretation since it seems to work and make sense across the board.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, although I found a wrench (see my latest update to my answer on your question>)

@NautArch except there are other magic item pells where no components are necessary
And sorcerers still cast even when they have no components via subtle spell

@NautArch definitely a good point about the spell slot thing.
I mean technically a spell slot was expended though just not by the caster of contingency and not at that exact time ;)

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, but it's not being used specifically for Contingency.
and that's the spell that has the requirement.
At that point, it is identical to casting a spell from an item into an ioun stone.

Sure sure. I was just being difficult.

4:01 PM
@NautArch When you get a chance, I've posted a "players available" for ToA in the Chatizen's forum with my weeks available. Hope the kids made you pancakes for Father's Day breakfast. (Heh, I had to make my own breakfast, as everyone else was asleep and I figured I'd just get my day started ... early riser am I)

@NautArch It could also mean that per the spell description, you have to expend a spell slot even though you normally don't have to. Might be worth it's own question. I.e. "If I use contingency with a racial spell, do I have to spend a spell slot?"

@KorvinStarmast Ha, I made the pancakes :) I'll take a look, but I've got a bad feeling I may need to look at my availability to continue :(.

@DavidCoffron Your race provides the spell slot on a long rest basis.
@DavidCoffron It is exclusive of the class spell slots

@DavidCoffron That's a good question to ask, and but i'd say the spell slot requirements remains.

@KorvinStarmast no. It's not a spell slot. You cast it without. Contingency requires a spell slot (hence. The confusion)

4:04 PM
Is there a protocol for joining the chatizen games

@NautArch right. It remains but can I use a class spell slot?

@MikeQ Yeah, go to the Back Room and ask Nits if you can join.

@KorvinStarmast Is there a regular schedule, or is each session planned individually

@DavidCoffron Contingency requires a spell, and the general case is spell slots; being able to cast the spell is what's needed. Treat your race spell as having a racial slot and Bob's your uncle. Seems to me you are making this overly complicated.

@KorvinStarmast I'll do that in a heartbeat in my games but what about AL where rules must be taken literally?

4:06 PM
@MikeQ We were working on about 3 Saturday nights per month, but RL has been sorta weird. If you want to see the sked, get the invite from Nits.

@DavidCoffron I don't think so: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/106114/…

DM's are allowed to rule in AL games, so I suggest you discuss with DM before the session.

@NautArch I know that part but it says I have to cast a spell (something i can do with my race) and expend a spell slot (so.ething I have from my class). Can I just lose the spell slot so as to use my racial spell for contingency?

@DavidCoffron I'd be interested to see what JCraw might have to say in an SA twit. Maybe toss him a q and see if he responds?

@KorvinStarmast they are allowed to rule when there is ambiguity but this seems clear cut. "Expend a spell slot for both"
@KorvinStarmast I've found he doesn't answer tough questions

4:09 PM
@DavidCoffron chuckles at the tough questions remark. :)

Which is usually fine with me given how he screws up even the "easy" ones. lol

Are class spells their own resource? Are they their own pool of spell slots? I say yes because you have the same issue with Magic Initiate when you have spells from another class. That slot is a separate resource from you class spells; it's not a MC thing.

@DavidCoffron no, because you can't cast a racial spell with a slot unless you also have it as aknown spell.

@NautArch I'm not casting it with a slot. I'm casting it and then contingency takes my slot

Hmm, I see the racial spell as a separate slot resource, per Magic Initiate. I can see the text parsing view seeing it otherwise.

4:11 PM
(A similar thing might occur with the spell storing edge case)

@DavidCoffron right, but contingency requires a spell slot to be expended. If there's no slot expended, then there's no contingency (or so that theory goes.)

@DavidCoffron Argument being that using ring of spell storing can't link to contingency?

@NautArch does it require a slot to be expended, or does it cause a slot to be expended

@NautArch he's saying that you could read contingency as taking the slot regardless by nature of the spell itself.

The slot to fill the ring was already expended ... albeit at a different time. So a slot was expended, right?

4:12 PM
@DavidCoffron I'd say the former, as per Crawford's tweet.

@KorvinStarmast arguing that if it can it will take a spell slot anyway (and if you don't have one the spell fails)

I thought racial spells were all either cantrips or explicitly stated to be "x per long rest" in their description?

@DavidCoffron Hmm, thus contingency is not able to link to ring of spell storing? The slot was used to fill the ring ... hmm. Pondering.

I guess it also means that Contingency itself can't be stored in an Ioun Stone or Ring huh (if we read it that way)?
Though it already can't be stored in the Stone because level is too high.

@Yuuki yes, but it still has a spell level and if contingency expend a slot it would make sense that it takes one on contingency'ing a racial spell
@Rubiksmoose well it can, but it'll fail when you cast it

4:15 PM
Wait does that mean that Contingency can't be cast from a scroll?

@Rubiksmoose that's part of my question. I think I'll ask it formally

@DavidCoffron I'd figure that you'd expend one of its "x per long rest" uses rather than one of your actual spell slots.

@Yuuki By RAI perhaps but not RAW. It says spell slot

Is there anyway to "cast" Contigency without having spellcasting?
Because if so, then that might be something to ask about to aid in clarification on whether contingent racial spells consume spell slots.
(e.g. If an aasimar Fighter can somehow cast contingency, can they even cast contingent light without any spell slots?)
(Can you put contingency in a ring of spell storing?)

@Yuuki you can do it via wish from a luck blade

Q: If you have the ability to cast a spell without a spell slot can you cast that spell using a spell slot?

ProtonfluxA 10th level Drow warlock (for instance) has the following racial ability in addition to it's warlock spellcasting abilities: Drow Magic (PHB p.24) You know the dancing lights cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the faerie fire spell once per day. When you reach 5th level, you ca...

No wait, it's a 6th-level spell.

Is there any way to use contingency to cast a 6th level spell? Even once?

@Rubiksmoose see my question I'm about to post for why I think this is different
@MikeQ can you upcast it?

@DavidCoffron I dunno. I just wanted to know what resources are required to freeze the universe, by casting a recursive contingent contingency

@MikeQ Alas, as amazing as that would be there are several things preventing it.

4:25 PM
Universe: "I see that you are attempting to cast an infinitely recursive contingent contingency. Proper recursion includes a base case, so please try again."

@Yuuki In a mathematical sense, yes. In a "I just learned how to code, time to hit the keyboard" sense, no. Infinite recursion happens.

@MikeQ And then it happens again.
And again.

@Yuuki and then the omnipotent DM stops it and housrules something per RAF

Alternately, it just keeps going until you burn off all your 6th-level spell slots.
Yeah, that'd be how I'd rule it.

@Yuuki That's almost an answer to my question lol

4:31 PM
I think that's what would happen by RAW too.

Well if your houseruling that you can cast 6th level contingency, RAW didn't matter that much anymore

Well, if you're going to be houseruling that contingency doesn't consume a spell slot for the contingent spell, you aren't going to be playing that campaign for much longer.

Fwiw, contingency only allows you to have one contingency active at a time.

> Also, contingency ends on you if its material component is ever not on your person.
Huh, I never really paid attention to that.
So the implication is that you keep the material component until the contingency goes off and then the component is consumed?

@Yuuki Actually it shouldn't be consumed. But otherwise yeah.

4:45 PM
I thought material components were consumed when spells are cast?
Or are you saying that you only ever need to carry one 500g diamond around?

@Yuuki Depends on the spell. If the spell consumes it, it will say "which is consumed"

Ah, I see.

4:58 PM
@DavidCoffronI think your question is too many questions :)
My problem is, I'm not sure my answer to Rubik's question is clear enough taht there is a path not allowing this and has opened the door for your question.
