In a previous life my throwing coach was an ex-olympian (in hammer throw) and (a) one of the apparatus we worked with during warmups was a "weight"--the same ball, but chained to the throwing handle with a single link, and (b) an exercise was just to twist and release without any of the footwork--270-degree rotation.

I never tried to hit someone with it, but definitely less than 6-sec.

@goodguy5 For me (as a GM) knowing the rules is like I understand painting landscapes is for Modernists: one should know and understand the rules so that one's choices of how to break them can be considered and interesting, not just random accidents.

When I get confused over English language inconsistency, it helps for me to remind ourselves that our current spelling system was standardised by just one guy compiling every English word and standardising its spelling based on methods we now know to be incorrect, over a period of ten years, in a task that was far more than what just one person should take care of.

Basically there was not much of a notion of etymology back then: people mostly had to guess. We spell ache the way we do instead of ake because he guessed it was connected to the Greek achos, but modern etymology shows us it isn't. Also, over the ten years his perspective on various kinds of word patterns changed, so he decided different etymologies for similar patterns over time.

Veto (as in the political instrument) is a homonym to the Finnish word meaning "pull" (noun, "an act of pulling") which would be a sensible etymology too because it essentially allows one to "pull" decisions back. So to highlight the fact that they're aware of the word's Latin origins, newsreaders and other language-savvy people often pronounce it differently... but not like how it's pronounced in Latin. Keeps bugging me.

@Tiggerous He was a relatively new acquaintance, I was 17 or so and he was a year or two younger. And he had a very bigoted worldview, although in a way that was not at all obvious in his normal day-to-day behavior. For context, that stuff is not common here even among the religious people.

We met at a church event, made friends quickly because of a bunch of shared interests in culture, and about half a year of this friendship in I learn that he is a fundamentalist and hates several groups of people based on what he perceived was literal instruction from the Bible. He thought everyone at the church agreed with this worldview, so he had never brought it up, thinking it goes without saying.

@kviiri I remember that when assessing huge pools of d6 rolls, you might as well assume each individual one will roll its average of 3.5, and thus for 40d6 you'll get a score of approximately 140 -- because at that number of dice, the odds you'll get anything far from that is a freak anomaly. (There is an 80% chance 40d6 gives you a result between 127-154, and a ~40% chance it will be between 135-145.)

I used to be a real stickler for non-lethal damage rules, and wanted to modify them to be more strategically important. If you want to keep an enemy alive, you had to work for it. But nowadays I find I'm far more happy with the enemies simply not dying when it would be awkward or inconvenient for them to die.

Or just roll back to 4e's solution: no such thing as nonlethal damage, just the person who lands the last blow gets to decide the target's fate.

It's also something that really attracted us to Fate early on: the player's in total control of exactly what kind of lasting bad stuff happens to their own character.

It was such a breath of fresh player agency.

It can stress the suspension of disbelief a bit that when fighting the city guard after a misunderstanding, a mighty Fireball simply leaves them groaning on the ground. @Tiggerous It's useful to know that D&D (in any edition) is one of the most complex RPGs around, and one of the most expensive. The entry costs (monetary and mental) for almost any other game are going to be noticeably less.

For example, the "quick-start" Fate rules are 72 pages and are available for free as a PDF or SRD, and all the props you need to start are 4d6 and some pencil and paper, maybe some poker chips or coins.

There's three pages of GM advice in the FAE book, which is demonstrably sufficient for new GMs--though GMs with experience in D&D-like systems may need a little more hand-holding.

@doppelgreener No, that's what I mean: when the mechanics say you get lasting bad stuff inflicted on your character (consequences), the player has final say in what those consequences will be.

You may not always be in control of whether you get a consequence (but you often are!). However you're always in control of what the consequence turns out to be.

When a robot throws you across the tavern, you get to decide if that means you're injured, or have robophobia, or if you've become the laughingstock of the adventurer's guild, or whatever else is appropriate for the situation and severity.

Story telling is probably the part of dnd that my players are currently weakest at, our gameplaying background as a group is mostly rules heavy euro style boardgames. So, I think I'll stick with 5e for now, but conisder Fate for the future.

I recommend trying some games that push storytelling with the mechanics! Fate isn't a great place to start for that, because it expects the group to be good at having a shared vision of the kind of story being told.

We had another game where a character decided they were gonna play a bear. Halfway through the session we realized the bear had never talked and we didn't know if it could.

So the player rolled, and the bear turned out to just be a totally ordinary bear that was tagging along with the party.
