7:02 PM
@ColinGross Maybe? As you say I think it can be referred back to even if no definition turns up (which I suspect is going to be the case).

@Rubiksmoose If we know we can't define it, it saves us the trouble of trying to define it.

@GreySage It will also be handy to say: "hey the book doesn't definite this term so please explain what you mean when you say "power" in a question."

7:18 PM
@Rubiksmoose exactamundo
I"m not sure what to do with this queston. I guess I can put up an answer that reworking a system that generally works to account for some exploits is overkill. Simply rule reasonably at your table when an exploit it attempted and explain why they can't do it.
But I guess that doesn't work at an AL table?
But then there's no houseruling anyway. so...

Yeah I'm not sure about it either honestly.
Thus, I leave it to others lol

i'll take some downvotes

But really they want us to just an evluation of the rule looking for exploits which I am too unmotivated to do.

@Rubiksmoose And that also feels like they haven't done their homework but are asking us to. It's not "i've done a lot of work, couldn't find anything (or here's what I found)...is there more?"

7:35 PM
I'm right here, you know. ;)

Question - According to RAW, does the order of getting advantage/disadvantage matter?
e.g. I get Advantage from X and disadvantage from Y, so they cancel out. But then I get advantage from Z. Does it still cancel out? Would it be different if the order was X, Z, Y?

@MikeQ As far as I'm aware, it does not.

@Xirema I was also just about to type (i swear!) but we know Xirema and that it's unlikely that homework wasn't done :)

@NautArch haha, fair enough.

but he question itself doesn't show the effort you've very likely put in

7:37 PM
@NautArch In regards to rpg.stackexchange.com/a/136584/8133. I can't support it without the use of an anecdote. Answers don't seem like the place for storytime.

@JackStout answers that involve table experience are absolutely good

@Xirema you want Pathfinder? because this is how you get Pathfinder!

@NautArch Well, a lot of that brushes up against "don't put answers in the question/comments" rule. Anything I could offer, i.e. "this is why this is clearly not broken" or "this is why this might be broken" is basically an answer to my own question.

@NautArch Alright. I'll edit my answer.

Although, if we're paving this route with good intentions, I would like to recommend sorting out a hierarchy of advantage & disadvantages or a least a weight system for them.

7:39 PM
@Xirema True, but listing the issues you've seen (and solved for) or the ones you've found realized may break it shows thatyou've done more than just come up with an idea. I dunno - up to you. Either way, I still don't think you should do it :)

I always feel that adding "but DM fiat" or something to the effect at the end of answers is never really adding anything.

@Xirema nice answer to the Wish question
@ColinGross agreed, but in this case my answer is about using DM fiat instead of houserules.

The questions where the answer is "this is squarely DM fiat territory" seem good, but adding that to other answers always strikes me as waffling.

In the end, I'm not a fan of changing away from the RAW as judgments made in my games have been reasonable enough to handle the problem.

but in general i'm not a fan of "here's the rules, but you're always free to ignore!"

7:41 PM
@NautArch Exactly. I feel that's implicit in all the answers.

@ColinGross it should be. But I do love waffles.

@NautArch Especially with fried chicken.

@ColinGross ohgodyes
and ice cream

@ColinGross I could agree with you if I had ever played with a group of three or more without someone repeatedly arguing against DM rulings. Not sure if this is a community wide problem or if my social connects are just the worst...

@JackStout That's an interpersonal issue.

7:43 PM
@Xirema Yeah I find that to big a big issue. Showing work vs answers in questions. Also your question is pretty long already.

@JackStout ha, i thought you were about to disagree on fried chicken.

@NautArch Never.

@JackStout I have a DM who makes questionnable rulings/rules up at times. It's taken a long time for me to just deal with it.

@Rubiksmoose Most of @Xirema 's work on here is pretty verbose. There are people that like that sort of thing.

I'll generally make a statement of disagreemetn and let it go after he says "well, that's my ruling"

7:45 PM
I only DMed, never played, for my first 15 years. I still automatically make calls without any consideration for the DMs position.

@NautArch Yeah. I think that happens at all tables to some extent or another. I've played entire campaigns where getting the drop on an enemy never happened.

Still, I agree with both of you. Adding it to answers is unnecessary.

@JackStout That's interesting. You started playing by picking up the DM role?

@ColinGross Sure long isn't necessarily bad, but there is a definite trend that as the question gets longer the gist of the question gets harder to find and more likely other questions and confusion creeps in.
And I say this as a person that has a very hard time with keeping my thoughts pithy.
So I understand that struggle well.

@Rubiksmoose Hey! I'll have you know that I can be confused by the most terse of questions!

7:46 PM
@Xirema The other problem with asymettrical is that it's likely going to create more situations with disadvantage and that can be unfun.
no one likes rolling two d20s and taking the lower.
except when the DM does it and you're a player :D

@ColinGross Ya. Tried to find someone else to run the game; failed to find someone else to run the game.

@ColinGross hahaha well there is that

@NautArch That's probably the thing that troubles me most about my variant, TBH.

@NautArch When shooting at a low AC fleeing enemy to bring it down to HP where it can be knocked out, but not wanting to risk a critical.

@Xirema yeah rolling wiht disadvantage sucks from an enjoyment perspective

7:48 PM
@JackStout So your friends disagree with the DM frequently and vociferously, but never want to volunteer to take over the role?

@JackStout I feel you man, I'm in the same boat. Either I DM or I don't play a TTRPG

@NautArch I feel differently about disadvantage. Just as with character flaws, injuries, and other detriments, disadvantage is a great opportunity for interesting this to just happen.

@ColinGross sure, but you're also increasing your chance of straight up missing more than reducing your critical chances.

@NautArch disadvantage isn't that bad when you're bonus is pretty high and the target AC is low.

But that's just in regards to my own characters
I hate when my party members have disadvantage.

7:50 PM
Depends on what kind of game the players want. Is it a game where winning = fun? Or is it a game where participation = fun, or story = fun?

@JackStout But the flaws and whatnot are opportunities for character roleplay. Once you're in the realm of dice, you're wanting good outcomes. Wanting bad outcomes can be a thing, but I think most of us want successes and not failures.

@NautArch I just couldn't think of any other situation off hand where disadvantage is what the player wanted.

@ColinGross because you generally don't want :)
There's always an edge case. But building a system around edge cases generally is a system that fails.
You've got to build a good system and then just deal with the edge cases when they arrive.

I swear I've had that glyph/wish discussion before but I'll be buggered if I can find where. Must not have been in a question.

and ask them politely to leave

7:51 PM
@NautArch Yeah... I think Fezzik ran into that once when he was jogging that jailor's memory.

@ColinGross Even then you don't want disadvantage. You want to hit, but you want to roll low on damage

@GreySage Or just take advantage of the fact that 5e allows all non-spell melee damage to be treated (post-facto!) as non-lethal by the player. ;)

@Xirema Only melee damage (unless it's been errata'd)

@Xirema I think only melee right?

@Xirema ranged damage can't be nonlethal

7:54 PM
But you can allow NPCs to roll death saves!

ohdang
sorry xirema
that was a lot of us

alright then. way to go team lol

lol, was literally checking that as people responded.

I removed my answer because @Mwr247 wrote a good one.

@JackStout Awww.... don't remove a decent answer just because someone else wrote a good one.

7:56 PM
Although I am in the habit of ruling as a DM that if the damage would have caused instant death, you cannot make it non-lethal. It's very difficult to decapitate someone "non-lethally".

Maybe somebody likes your answer better.

@JackStout Nothing wrong with multiple good answers fwiw.

Maybe your icon is cooler.
Maybe someone thinks your username would be a great brand name for a dark malty beverage

My icon is WAY cooler, but still, my answer didn't add enough for the real estate.

@JackStout Are you sure? Real estate is pretty cheap here.

7:58 PM
It's virtual estate anyway ;-)

Now I'm thinking about Neuromancer. Where's that book gone..

It crashed in some snow.

Hee

@Yuuki ! We need you! There's puns and word play to be had!

I don't have a copy of Snow Crash.

8:00 PM
Good. And you shouldn't show it to anyone even if you did! Heck, just owning that sort of thing is illegal.

Unlike David Bowie, I don't work well under pressure.

dee-dee-dee-deedeedee-doo

@Yuuki That's hardly a regal position to take. Not going to be the champions like that.

8:14 PM
Not very Queenly of you.

8:57 PM
yaassss kweeen

9:16 PM
Turn has a little over 24 hours left to fund. If you haven't already, consider this: Shapeshifters + real life drama + split character sheets = rad! With a bonus viking helmet from yours truly hanging out in the video as well! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/briecs/turn-a-tabletop-roleplaying-game
(7 hours now)

9:56 PM
I found a cat in Waterdeep named Artemis Entreri. Will I die?

10:11 PM
Oh that reminds me - Is there an artemis fowl movie coming (again) or did I dream that
I did not

2019 - Kenneth Branagh

it doesnt look amazing - but i'll admit i'm not the target audience for over a decade
the problem when they adapt a book that's older is do you retarget to capture the old fanbase who's older now or stick to targeting the same age group and hope the original crowd watches anyway

I'm a little worried about Judi Dench being cast as Root.

@Yuuki Oh because of the sort of sexism subplot?
(had to google the name to remember who that even was but it came back quick)

Well yeah, Holly Short being the first serious female officer in the fairy police force is a big part of her characterization and motivations.

10:16 PM
The Zootopia subplot i should say

And if she isn't, I don't know what they're going to do with that.

Yeah who knows
I mean you can just change it to "she's the second" or "shes the third" but that does seem like youre undermining her motivation for no reason

@SirCinnamon It definitely looks like they're going for the latter, I think.

Yeah for sure

Which is a problem because Artemis Fowl was never as big as, say, Harry Potter and I don't think you can expect the series to have saturated the target age group.
Like, for example, Harry Potter.
I always figured Artemis Fowl was going to be impossible to adapt.

10:27 PM
I recall several false starts on a movie adaptation

Not because fairies and magic or whatnot but for the simple fact that you need a child actor to portray "ruthless criminal mastermind".
That's... going to be really hard.

Yeah - On both fronts you might have had more success with an animated movie
im thinking batman TAS style

Tool-assisted speedrun?
I kid, I kid.
Artemis Fowl was always somewhat dark-ish for a children's fantasy novel. I mean, you have a villain protagonist right out the gate.

Definitely dealt in darker themes
Criminal underworld, crime, racism, sexism

10:45 PM
@SirCinnamon You're targeting the older ones who're going to expose their kids to it. Push like this for a couple of generations and you're really dieseling!
(I mean, I grew up reading my brothers' Silver Age comics. And now I take my kids to every Marvel movie. Anecdote=data!)

Lol

I really appreciated that A Wrinkle in Time was so emphatically, unapologetically for tweens and... really nobody else.

11:16 PM
@BESW I'm a fan of Oprah. I'm a fan of giant Oprah. I could have done with a few pounds less glitter/makeup.

11:34 PM
Urgh, that 10 minute stretch before you leave work. Not enough time to really start anything, too much time to be obviously wasting it.

11:48 PM
@GreySage I can easily be productive spending 10 min straightening up the desk/shelves, remaking my priority task list for next week, &c. Or whip up an answer on SE =)
