Ben
6:02 PM
How's everybody doing today?

I think (based on my assumptions on the state of medical science) that I have a higher life expectancy today than I did yesterday. But I don't think it increased by a full day, so really we're just pushing back the inevitable.

@nitsua60 You're also one day closer to death.
So you've got that going for you.

[hmm... evaluating. Is that just a statement of the obvious, or a threat? What's the most recent thing I did to one of Naut's characters?]

Ben

@Ben In all seriousness, though: "busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest," as my father would say. Which is why I should be grading rather than lurking!

6:05 PM
@nitsua60 yes.

[clarity unlocked]

Ben
@nitsua60 You can lurk at varying levels :P

@NautArch That's the wrong way to think about it! Days are totally arbitrary, so you're really on a continuum towards death, not a cycle of repearing ticks! :))

@kviiri Nope. The magnetic north pole is like a twig sticking up into the Weave. So once a day it catches on a thread and then releases--TWANG!!--which causes ripples in the Weave. And that's how you get your spell slots back.
[headcanon achieved]

Ben
Am I the only one that feels like there should be an extra page for PC abilities/feats, like the spell lists on the 5e PC sheet?
:P

6:11 PM
@kviiri Ask a Physicist whether they think time is still continuous below the Planck time. ;)

@Xirema I have asked my SO that, repeatedly. She says she doesn't really care about that because it's too small

Ben
@nitsua60 Thor Ragnarok is not technically "canon" - It is an adaptation of Thor's re-telling of the events.
Headcanon also achieved
(Though I do like yours - very eerie)

@Ben So the "canon" is "what Thor said to Gamora about Hel stabbing him &c., to the extent that anyone believes him"?
Cool.

Ben
Anyone not busy and feel like helping me build up my 5e barb to level 20?

Bell just rang for class--sorry =\

6:15 PM
@Ben sure. I'm working on a presentation but can multitask :P

Ben
@nitsua60 I'm not paying your bills. Priorities :)

Any houserules you're using?
or limitations ( can you use UA?)

Ben
It's a Minotaur Storm Barb - so Xan's but that's it

@Ben stats?
do you get any magic items?

Ben
Current stats (at level 3) are 16/10/14/10/15/8
I am wanting to multiclass at least one level into fighter, for the fighting style, and second wind... a strong argument can be made for two, with the action surge
At the cost of an ASI and Primal Champ

6:18 PM
Primal Champion is HUGE.

Ben
Yeah

Are you sure you want to multi and lose that?
Also, is this just pure future planning conjecture or are you immediately using the barb at level 20?

Ben
@NautArch Yeah it's a oneshot
@NautArch I mean......

@Ben Cool - do you get any magic items?
We can do a multi build and compare against a vanilla and see which you like better.

Ben
Yes. Gimme a sec
@NautArch Awesome :D
> - 22,500 gold pieces
- 3 Uncommon Magic Items
- 2 Rare Magic Items
- 1 Very Rare Magic Item
- No Unique Item, but Acquiring Legendary and Artefact stuff in game is possible

6:22 PM
@Ben You're going for GWF Fighting Style, right?

Ben
@Xirema Actually TWF... Lol
My weapon choice is 2 handaxes, and a battleaxe

I'd say we can use my dndbeyond, but i don't' have the minotaur race.

@Ben Are you picking the fighting style for DPS improvements, then?

Ben
Also the only restriction the DM has put on this PC is horns to 2d4, not 1d10, and a missed charge leads to an AOO
@Xirema Yeah

@Ben I'd probably stick with a Fighter 1 dip so you don't miss out on the last ASI
especially since you're not getting Primal, that increase could be a big deal.
Feats are in play?

Ben
6:31 PM
Yeah

are you using this for your minotaur?

I need to run the numbers, but my gut instinct is that Primal Champion probably results in greater DPS than TWF Style.

Ben
@NautArch Yes. Xan's has an entry, but it's not much different from this

It sure would be nice if I had a program that I'd spent the last several weeks developing that could be used to handle exactly situations like this.
;)

@Ben do you mean ravnica?
i don't think xanathar does minotaur race

Ben
6:35 PM
I know I've seen it somewhere

TWF is actually a neat way to get a constant use of your bonus action.

Ben
@NautArch D&D Beyond has it

@Ben Only if you purchased Ravnica (which I haven't)
that's why i can't use my dndbeyond to help with this build

Ben
Right (I don't have it either lol)

But that's the first question I"d want to solve: how to get a consistent bonus action use.
That can be done via TWF if you do the fighter 1 dip.
You could also do a shield build (which I'd actually recommend) and get Shield Master
and then you don't need to dip (just use an ASI)

Ben
6:39 PM
@NautArch Ohhh…. and horns gives me adv

@Ben adv?
how?

Ben
> Your horns grant you advantage on all checks made to shove a creature,

But Shieldmaster would remove the need to use Hammering Horns and provide another option if you can start with a Dash action.

Ben
Racial feature

@Ben ooh, they must have added that since UA.
SO the question now is (before we really begin), would you rather have the TWF attack (which works against creatures of all sizes), or have a fairly consistent Shove that generates advantage for your Attacks(but only works against creatures one size larger or smaller).

Ben
6:43 PM
@NautArch This is v3

@Ben cool, thx

Ben
That's where I got the shove from

If that's what you're using, we'll use that :)
so mechanically, do you like the consistent TWF bonus action attack (but without your proficiency modifier), or do you like the shove to create advantage on your other attacks (increasing crit chances and brutal)

Ben
@NautArch In all honesty, I like the flavour of the Dual axes

@Ben then flavor on!
the best decision is the one that's fun
for you

6:46 PM
@Ben Do two axes taste better than one?

Ben
@Rubiksmoose I've been asking, but no one has stopped screaming long enough to give a solid answer

that is disappointing. Keep up the good work. Science must know!

Ben
The search continues!
Also, speaking of flavour, I came up[ with a concept of a barbarian that only rages if he doesn't die in battle.

@NautArch so that is an excellent question about polymorph stats.

@Ben I think I'd probably grab the Dual Wielder feat.

Ben
6:49 PM
Mechanically, it's redundant. But also hilarious :P

@Rubiksmoose i was waiting until we had a consensus on this one. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, though :)

Ben
@NautArch Yup. I can see the use for that :D

@NautArch it must change with the creature right? Or is it set when the spell is cast?

@Ben so that uses up one ASI. Giving you 4 more ASIs.

Okay, so I came up with a three-way comparison between a Primal Champion Barbarian using a Battleaxe 2-handed, a Primal Champion Barbarian using Two-Weapon Fighting without the TWF Fighting Style, and a non-Primal Champion Barbarian using Two-Weapon Fighting with the TWF Fighting Style acquired from a 1 level Fighter dip. gist.github.com/Xirema/a2a4e1f6cd767b7a75071881ecfc8cf7
Warning: I am terrible at formatting stats.

Ben
6:56 PM
@Xirema I'll be honest, I just see numbers, and I'm not sure what they all mean lol

There are also a few assumptions baked in:

1. Crits aren't handled at all. Nor are Crit-Failures
2. At level 20, the Barbarian always has STR of 20, before Primal Champion is applied (so the Primal Champion has 24 STR)
3. They're using a non-magic weapon, so Primal Champion Barbarian has +13 to Attack, and +7 as their damage modifier, non-primal champion Barbarian has +11 to attack and +5 as their damage modifier
@Ben Like I said, I'm not great at formatting numbers.

@Xirema Hmm, that makes an analysis difficult. Crits are a big thing for barbs.

Look at the first three sections though: PC Battleaxe vs AC16, PC TWF vs AC16, TWFFS vs AC16.

Ben
True, especially with Brutal Crit

@NautArch Working on it. I refactored the code into C++ and added special handling for crits/failures, but my java code which I'm using doesn't have that.
@NautArch I will say, my gut instinct again is that crits won't favor one fighting style over another, since the only difference is how the damage modifier gets added, which is not altered by crits.

7:03 PM
@Ben Okay, so far I've used your Very Rare item on a Belt of Fire Giant Str (gets your STR to 25) and 4 ASIs on CON to get to 20. That brings you to unarmored AC of 23.

It might favor 2h-fighting over TWF fighting, but that's not the comparison I'm interested in: @Ben has already said they want to go TWF fighting, so really it's only a comparison between PC TWF and TWFFS TWF.
In that case though, for every example, PC TWF does have a higher damage output than TWFFS TWF.
(on average)

@nitsua60 It's half of a pink floyd lyric. Shorter breath, one day closer to death. From Dark Side of the Moon album. Song about time, IIRC.

@Ben I'd probably use your 2 Rare items on 2 +2 Axes.
Do you know anything more about the details of the one-shot?

dual wield barb is fun, for sure

I will say this much: TWF Barbarian is very competitive in terms of damage output, even without Two-Weapon-Fighting-Style.
(Also, based on my calculations, a TWF Barbarian with Primal Champion is actually better than the TWF Barbarian that dips 1 level of fighter for TWF Fighting Style)
That +4 to Strength is really powerful.

7:09 PM
oops, did unarmored AC wrong...pleasehold.

@Xirema Yeah, +2 to hit and +2 to damage can do that
Especially where bonus vs AC is at a place where +2 actually gives you 2 more faces to roll (unlike e.g. high-level Pathfinder where any martial hits on a 2 with their first attack, and bonuses just increase second/third attack chances)

I would definitely not bother to take just one level of fighter. it's either 3 levels for crit-fishing or full barb

@Ben Do you ahve to use your current stats?
@goodguy5 exceptthat they really want to dual-wield.

@NautArch then dual wield without the fighter level?

Oh, I had to update the chart: forgot to take into account the flat +4 bonus from raging (permanently). Same results though: TWF Barb without TWFFS is still better. gist.github.com/Xirema/a0fede56c791e07fef1efb09ec98a6de

7:13 PM
what he siad ^

Also removed the PC Battleaxe build from the chart, since there's no plans to actually use it, irrespective of its power.

Ben
56 mins ago, by Ben
Current stats (at level 3) are 16/10/14/10/15/8

@goodguy5 they can, but not nearly as effectively.

I'm not going to ask xir to do the math on it, but I'd be interested in knowing the expected damage throughput of adding in the champion level 3
@NautArch not according to xir

Ben
Sorry just a bit preoccupied atm...
afk :P

Ben
Str/Dex/Con/Int/Wis/Cha

ohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohnoohno
really?!

@goodguy5 Ask me when I get home, and have access to a version of my program that can handle crits.
@NautArch Oh shit. =(

Ben
@NautArch WHATTT

@Xirema Hmm, well based on the analysis, it seems kinda silly to dip fighter then. Better to not have the ability modifer and get the capstone.

7:18 PM
but yea
the's damned heartbreaking (stan lee)

although being able to get the dip, take TWF and the dual-wielder feat will pair nicely to allow dual battle axes rather than dual hand axes.

@NautArch If you scroll all the way to the bottom, you can see that the TWFFS version has a 21% chance of dealing 0 damage against an AC24 creature, whereas the PCTWF only has a 12.5% chance of dealing 0 damage. That's obviously not the whole story (most of that lost 8.5% is in PCTWF dealing 5-9 damage, whereas the next lowest damage for TWFFS is 10 damage), but it does affect how you perceive the flow of combat.

let's not forget about polearm master

@goodguy5 Heck.

Yea. It's hard to justify two weapon fighting when polearms exist

Ben
7:23 PM
@goodguy5 Bathing in the blood of your enemies > tactics

@Ben d10s make more blood than d8s?

@goodguy5 or d6s.

Ben
@goodguy5 at 10ft

@Ben Did you see my question on altering your starting stats?

There's nothing stopping you from being within 5 ft, I think

7:25 PM
I wish I'd added crit handling to my program when I first wrote it. Adding it when I was doing the total conversion to C++ was so much easier than it'll be to add it ad-hoc after the fact.

@NautArch I'd say Stan lived a full life, and he left his mark. Stan done good.

So much code to refactor.

16 hours ago, by nitsua60
So three attacks at +5, 1d6+5 on each, vs. two attacks at +7, 1d6+7 on each.

Ben
@NautArch I did not?

@Ben Can you reconfigure your starting stats?

Ben
7:27 PM
@NautArch I can
It uses point buy

total points?

@nitsua60 Bearing in mind the PC TWF fighting also has an additional 3.5 from the extra 1d6. So it's more like two attacks at +7, 1d6 +7, along with a third attack at +7, 1d6+0.
@nitsua60 The +attack matters a lot though.

Ben
@NautArch The standard?
so... 27

1d10+7 2X
1d4+0 1x
all at +12 to hit

Are we a Q&A site, or a support group? Well, sometimes we seem to be a support group, and I think that for questions like that it's a good thing. Doesn't need to be either / or situation.

7:32 PM
@Ben okay, so for the multiclass, this is the stats I'm thinking. Use your ASI on dual-wielder to let you use battle axes and give you +1 AC.
STR 25/ DEX 18/ CON 20/ INT 8/ WIS 14/ CHA 8
@Xirema yep

Ben
@NautArch The 25 str comes from the magic items?

good use of .... very rare? item

Very rare: belt of fire giant str (str 25); Rare: 2 +2 battle axes ; Uncommon (Cloak of Protection, Goggles of Night)

@NautArch The belt definitely alters my calculations, and without running the numbers, I'm assuming it skews things back in favor of TWFFS instead of PCTWF.

you get more uncommon item

7:34 PM
AND you get to go crit fishing, boiz

Since at that point you get the +7ATK/+7DMG while also getting the offhand damage.

but with that, you have an unarmored AC of 21

let's not forget about action surge once

@goodguy5 nope, only a 1 level dip, not 2.

oh... sad

7:35 PM
Wanted that ASI to bump AC up another +1.

ah

@NautArch I'm getting 10 +4(DEX) +5(CON) +1(Dual Wielding), where's the last AC point coming from?

Ben
And just for posterity's sake, at what level would you multiclass?

@Xirema cloak of protection.

@NautArch Ah, okay.

7:37 PM
I'd rather do B17/F3, but personal preference
things can't hit you if they're dead

@Ben and for the final uncommon...winged boots :P
@goodguy5 losing the final 3rd brutal critical die and not having indomitable might with a 25 is kind of a bummer, though.

I thought that 17 was the 3rd die
that's why I chose that.
*rummages*

And that means if he does do a Shove, his minimum roll is 25.

yea. brutal crit 3 is 17

ah, yeah. So you just lose out on Indomitable Might
and an ASI
that's not horrific for action surge and crit fishing

7:41 PM
19-20 is exciting when it means dealing an extra 4d8

Yeah, I'd be on board with that decision and the loss of 1 AC.

(and another if you're a half orc)

he's a minotaur

eh, still fine

@NautArch Sounds like a minmaxotaur to me :P

7:42 PM
heh

I think you've convinced me on doing a Fighter 3 Champion dip for @Ben.
Lose 1 AC, Dex is at 16, but get improved critical and action surge

like I said, you don't need AC if they're dead.
and you take half damage anyway

@goodguy5 the best defense is a good offense

Ben
@NautArch @nitsua60 was looking into that too :)

I still feel like polearm master is possibly better, but dual wielding is a great mental image

Ben
7:45 PM
Can you have a +2 weapon of warning?

@goodguy5 yeah, we've covered not going for max, but wanting the two axe flavor.
@Ben i...don't think so.

Ben
Rats. haha

You've also a got a lot of movement and could drop another ASI to bring your Dex to 14, AC 19, but take the Mobile feat.

@Ben You're the "Would Stab as a Warning" category on that meme chart, huh?

@Xirema I don't see how you're getting +7 on all three attacks. There should be a 2-mod differential on to-hit between Bb20 and Bb19/F1 (because of the strength bump to 24).

7:46 PM
I've spent a lot of time thinking specifically about barbarian-fighter interactions

Ben
@Xirema ...potentially

@nitsua60 belt of fire giant strength

Gives you a 60 movement and can get out without a disengage after you attack with Mobile @Ben

@nitsua60 I'm talking about the Primal Champion Two-Weapon fighting, where you're attacking twice normally, and getting a bonus action attack. All three have a +hit of 7, but only two have a +damage of 7.

@NautArch I think if multiclassing at all, the break isn't obvious between F1, F2, F3.

7:48 PM
@nitsua60 Yeah, you've got some choices. But I like the tradeoff for increasing critical chance at the expense of 1 AC.

@Xirema Oh, sorry. I was looking at Primal making 2 vs 19/1 making 3. Not quite the same thing we're talking about.

@nitsua60 Gotcha.

Ben
Ok, so got the stats... if I can convince the DM to let me take a +2 weapon of warning, that'd be awesome... but failing that...

You've also still got 22K gold and could buy some more magic items.
but this crit fishing, dual axe swinging, mobile barbarian seems like some fun.

@NautArch Grab Magic Initiate and take jump?
(he he he)

Ben
7:51 PM
Oh, I should mention - Volo's, SCAG, MToF and XGtE are allowed for Race and Class creation
So potentially allowed for items
potentially
@nitsua60 Go full diablo with the LeapQuake Barb build :P

Can we get a couple more votes to close this question please? It is unclear to me (and others) what they are actually asking here and I think it will be much improved if they come back and clarify.

Ben
Also; +7 to hit... that's not including proficiency, right?

@Ben if that's the case...how are you a minotaur?

Ben
It was a case basis.
@NautArch Also, what's starting stats (for HP)?

starting hp scales with con

Ben
8:03 PM
Yeah. And start s at 12+con mod

so, you're getting the +5 from con with every level
oh!!!!!
you were asking whether he started with fighter or barb
my bad

Ben
Am assuming that @Nautarch respecced my initial stats
@goodguy5 NO, just assuming I didn't start with +5 con. Lol

@Ben I did 9/15/15/8/14/8

Ben
Actually, thinking about it probably should look at all ASIs

@Ben oh. then that's what I was saying. Your starting hp retroactively scales to con mod

8:06 PM
for ASIs: 4(dual wielder); 8(1CON/1DEX); 12(2 CON); 16(2 CON)

Ben
What happened at level 19?

@Ben Nothing - I decided gainst barb 19/fighter 1 and went Barb 17/Fighter 3
For the surge and crit fishing.

Ben
@NautArch ooooh
So you went for Champ?

@Ben Yeah, I think that's the best choice.
double your crit odds
I'd also consider dropping one of the ASIs for Mobile.
for that sweet 60 move and free disengage after attack

Ben
@NautArch That's a potential...
Well, all that considered, I'll have to re-do all my maths. Lol

8:16 PM
@Ben If you drop your CON to 18, you're just removing 20 HP from your previously calculated pool.

and removing ANOTHER ac

Ben
Can you do up a list of progression? ASI's and when to take multiclass levels...

@goodguy5 right, drops you to 20AC.
but you can move away from the danger. At a movement of 60.

but your job as barbarian is to not move away from danger

@goodguy5 Better to move away and smash again then stay and fall. Tao of the Kiting Barb.

Ben
8:20 PM
@goodguy5 I also have an amendment from the dm for my "Goring rush" (horns) - On a missed attack, you are open to an Attack of Opportunity by the target.

12+7*16+3*6+5*20 = 242 (level 20 hp)

Ben
But, thinking about it, he might be a bit tentative about that - come up with his own house ruling (as an allowance for the race), only to have it negated
@goodguy5 Ty :D

@Ben I wouldn't do this if I were you. OAs in 5e are very purposfeully limited. I wouldn't allow people to houserule specific cases in to complicate it.

Ben
True. But this isn't a primary attack, or even a secondary really
I would feel like it's a flavour thing

@Ben For some reason I read this as Göring Rush and thought it had to do with triplane combat

8:28 PM
@Ben and if you take mobile, you can dash across 120' of difficult terrain to do it :)

Ben
@kviiri The cowman does airplane noises as he charges - NEEEEEOOOOOWWWW

@Ben When flavor leads to more mechnical complexity I definitely view it less favorably. There is a balance of course.
And arguably if flavor leads to mechanical anything then it really isn't just flavor any more lol

Ben
This is a one-off, and it'll be the first time I play this PC so it can work as a learning experience :)
@goodguy5 Also was that with one or two feats? Assuming two (7*16)?

@Ben it's with no feats? it's just the 16 levels of d12 hit die.

Ben
@goodguy5 Oh right

8:34 PM
@Ben Right--just going straight off the mod. (Because the proficiency-bit is unaffected by distributing levels across classes.)

Ben
@nitsua60 Yeah. +13 is much more enticing hehe
Actually +15... magic weapon +2

@Ben I wonder if I played too much Red Baron in my formative years if Göring is to me "the WWI ace pilot who later became a major Nazi leader" instead of "the major Nazi leader who used to be a WWI ace pilot"...

Well, the important thing I suppose is that you know that he was both of those.

@NautArch interesting. I'd always read Undead Fortitude as a narrative beat: "you thought you dropped the zombie, but really it was still kicking!" I don't think there's really anything in the text to support one over the other, really.

@nitsua60 I think ravery is right.
I upvoted him, but leaving mine up for the alternate interpretation.

8:43 PM
I think it's unclear, personally. (And I'm fine with that.)
I think ravery's last bit would be more persuasive if they'd quoted an example like is hypothesized. (I can't think of any, but I'm bushed.)

I mean, I agree with naut.

You already have the predecessor of disintegration ray and orc fortitude.
19
A: Can a Zealot Barbarian at 0 hp be disintegrated?

Lino Frank CiaralliYes, the Barbarian will be disintegrated. While 5e lacks -HP tracking and instead simply issues failures on damage taken when unconcious, this doesn't matter in the slightest. The Disintegrate spell will deal combat damage to the Barbarian. Since the Barbarian is at 0 HP, the effect of Disinte...

@goodguy5 oooooh.
I"m using that.

@NautArch Retract your comment, quick!

@nitsua60 retracted :) but they still get up an upvote.

@NautArch I think this is another example of poor writing. All they had to do was write "if any damage would drop to 0 hp..."
As written it reads that it both drops to 0 HP and also drops to 1 HP instead which makes no sense read together.

8:57 PM
@Rubiksmoose yeah, i think it's a narrative question also. DOes the zombie stay upright? Or does it fall, make the size and rise back from the dead again.

@Rubiksmoose Now, I just need to find an ability that triggers on dropping an enemy to 1 hp.

@Rubiksmoose Schrödinger's barbarian

@goodguy5 hah

@nitsua60 The "narrative beat" interpretation seems appropriate; in D&D most narrative is composed of beatings.

quittin time. later

9:02 PM
@goodguy5 c ya!

Ben
9:13 PM
@kviiri It's all a matter of perspective

9:43 PM

Ben
9:54 PM
Ok, so @NautArch It'd be safe to assume that the multiclassing happens after all the ASIs...
I'll be honest, been up since 3am on 3 hrs of sleep, so brain isn't following logical paths properly :P

@Ben Yeah, it's easiest to look at it like that :)

Ben
Awesome. So - ASIs; Feats; Mutliclass. Simple enough

@Ben Did you decide on the final ASI or going with Mobile?

Ben
@NautArch I'll talk to the DM. Either/or.
Like, if he really wants that OA on a missed charge, fine. That's a specific enough case that I'd allow it

@BESW I like that one

Ben
9:59 PM
But if he doesn't want the feat for that reason, I'll go with the ASI

10:16 PM
@NautArch I added an answer to that disintegrate question. The top two answers are honestly just wrong... The selected answer doesn't even really seem to answer the question.
I remember not answering this one at the time since I had game night and didn't think there was really any impact to the spell, but it bothers me to see incorrect answers up there. Am I crazy?

eh, I think they have the problem that it's very obvious what should happen intuitively and they're trying to awkwardly interpret the rules so that that is what happens rather than just going "yeah the rules are janky in this case"

@Carcer Yeah it is hard to explain away bad writing to get things to work as they should.
But still the top answer keeps talking about the unconscious condition when the question has nothing to do with that.
