For those of whom that the name David A. Trampier rings a bell (artist), recently saw this linked from the webcomics I follow: skylandgames.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/… - note the additional edit: David Trampier, 59, died at 10:58 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014

Oh, yeah, I got a comment about that on my Rakshasa question.
Unfortunately, we can no longer ask the artist. David Trampier died two days ago. tor.com/blogs/2014/03/david-a-trampier-obituarySean Duggan 2 days ago

bday wishlist:
- a good coffee grinder
- enough reputation on scifi.se to sustain at least a hundred downvotes

@JonathanHobbs Are you planning a spree?

@AlexP No, but most times I visit that site there's at least one thing I wish I had enough rep to downvote
I figure enough rep for a hundred ought to sustain me for any future occasions for quite a while

Go on a spree. You know you want to.
Ask 20 complex literary questions about Tiptree and I'll come over there and upvote them all and we can see how long it takes to get cool answers. :)

3:48 AM
@AlexP I have no familiarity with Tiptree!
... and since I know nothing I can ask anything :D

@JonathanHobbs Are the answers there really such trash?

:P
I assumed Jon meant the questions. >.>

@AlexP That still doesn't actually answer my vaguely astonished question.

Well, from my perspective, they're full of weird-ass speculative nonsense.
"Speculative" like "speculate about this thing," not, you know, "imaginative fiction."

Apparently SKR really did kick ass as the Usenet rep guy, back in the day.
When they desperately needed it because of weird lawsuit things freaking out the Internet fans.

Phoenix's goalie is making some really huge saves tonight.
Wild West Hockey is not at all like Blood Bowl. It's hockey with mystic cowboys, not football with orcs. Difference!

Gooood morning, everyone.
he said to the empty room, echoes of his greeting bouncing at him from the dark, unadorned walls

I've killed it. Sorry about that.

*shrug*. You gotta do what you gotta do.

5:59 AM
@Lord_Gareth No, a lot of them are quite good, but since the subject matter is fiction, a lot of questions require speculation and interpretation to answer.
The end result is that incredibly goofy stuff appears.
e.g. this answer to why melange is called spice. but it seems to be answering why melange is called melange.

@JonathanHobbs Most of the time, though, it's enough to upvote a good answer.
I don't mind if a bad answer has 1 or 2 upvotes, if a good answer to the same question has 20.
But that one is a terrible answer, yes.
"The American author probably thought of the French term by translating an Indian word". What?

Quoth Simon Tam: "I'm confused. ... No, wait, I think maybe you're confused."

6:52 AM
Hey, I'm looking for a kind-of self contained 4e adventure (in the style of Prey for Smiley Bob, if you know it). I can roll my own, but it's a last minute thing and I'm looking to save some time. Does anyone know of any other good ones?

7:04 AM
Morning.

OR IS IT?

@detly It is. I checked.

Well I just rolled a 3 on the d20 I keep on my desk, so I suppose you're right

1d20

7:24 AM
10 on a d20 should be outlawed or rerolled on the grounds of being wishy-washy and undecisive and boring.
In effect, I want a d12 marked 1-6 and 15-20.

....

I dunno, 12s are pretty exciting
12-14 is the range where you decide whether to fire your cleric or not

Fire my cleric?
Out of a cannon?
Into the sun?

Into the astral dreadnought

Hmmm
Cleric in a cannon + feather fall spell = medical air support!

7:32 AM
...eventually, anyway

[wave] hello people!

Hello hello.

quick question, do you guys have any suggestions for a town name that starts with "Raven" or "Riven" that isnt part of a game or book?
Ravenholm is in Half Life apparently and Rivendale is too close to the elf city in LotR

Rob
Happy daycycle fellow citizens!

back atchya @Rob

Rob
7:45 AM
MC? In game terms; although I rather like the idea of replacing DM with MC for a game system.
Punk the Angrying; The Storyteller is known as the MC.

@MC_Hambone Is there a feel to the gameworld that's similar to any real-life cultures?
Ravensburg could work for a central European feel.

@Rob haha yes, It's my secret goal to be a rapper ;)

Rob
@lisardggY Cunning suggestion!

@lisardggY Ravensburg could work... it is a medieval Europe feel... the town is supposed to be kinda ominous and evil (but not out right evil) and it is Human dominant with snooty "high elves" and dwarves primarily in the working class

@MC_Hambone Ravenloft? :P

7:50 AM
i guess I dont even really need it to be a Raven prefix persay... but i kinda like the ominous feel of the Raven

Rob
(database trolled) Ravensham, Raven Springs, Ravenbrook, (eviller) Ravengaze, Ravenclaw (ha! Maybe not ;) ) Ravenfang

@InbarRose Indeed my friend, indeed lol.... though i have never really looked at that setting I think it's kinda what I am going for

Rob
Animal ~= mood of city?

Well, how about just ask for "an ominous sounding city name"

Yeah.. what @InbarRose said... how about just general "ominous city names"? :D
lol

7:52 AM
Do you want them to be at all silly, like "doom town" ?

@Rob I guess the animal could be an approximate feel, if there is an animal in the name at all (preferably something dark like a raven tho)
@InbarRose no, definitely not
the more serious the name the better
the Baron of the region already has a silly name
"Paul Udurak-Ramachandrahimurusa"
although i should probably change that since I have forgotten how to pronounce it
I guess there is a school called Ravenscroft IRL... i kinda like that, tho Marvel Universe has something called Ravencroft
being original is a pain in the butt sometimes

8:19 AM
Can you describe the terrain around this city?
The geographic qualities?

sure
1 sec lemme pull up the map :D just make sur ei dont forget anything
Ok so it's coastal and a port city, slightly north of the equator. There is a jungle area to the south and forests to the north. The area where the city is specifically is low land and slightly marshy (think Florida in the USA)
and it's not necessarily evil it's just more of a gloomy, ominous feel
the baron of this city is the main supporter of the extermination of the Minotaur people
(back story made short he and the current human king's father hatched a plan to replace the current king with a doppelganger since the king is a minotaur sympathiser. The plan has already been enacted in the game too)
i foyu need more I can regale you with more info
Oh! i forgot, the city is also in between 2 branches of a river, so the coast and the rivers make a natural moat like barrier around the city

Interesting.
Any interesting historical significance? Or events?

I am kinda running a "colonizing the Americas" scenario where the minotaur are the natives and the humans are the Europeans... and we are right on the cusp of when the Europeans realize murdering the indigenous people is a bad idea

Someone famous? a King, Ruler, something?

Ummm for the city specifically?

8:32 AM
Yes
Or the region
What's the name of the river?

Just the Baron, he fought with the current king (not the doppelganger) in the wars against the minotaurs.

I am thinking, River Branching off = horns. So that region could be called "The Horns" or "The Bulls Horns" or something. But that's not the city name.

No name for th eriver as of yet. I will work on that, but if you wanna name it feel free
I kinda like that... it could be something the minotaur use to refer to the region

Exactly.

my goal for this story is that since we have a minotaur in the party, I want to have him be a key player in making the 2 civilizations work to gether. then the minotaurs get some of their land back

8:35 AM
You said Jungle/Swampy/Marshy + Rivers + new world (ie: untamed and wild)....
Maybe there are lot's of mosquitoes there?
And then call the city "Blood Hollow"

That
is
BRILLIANT

[bows]

[applaudes]

that gives lot's of flavor.

that's one thing I forget about when writing my world... what kind of mostly benign creatures are present
...I blame it on me never going out side
:P

8:37 AM
It's a necessary city, a huge port in the new world, on a river that heads into the land. But it doesn't have a huge permanent population, Mostly soldiers, and sailors from the ships. People don't like living there. The rulers want to control it for its wealth and strategic location - but no one likes living there.
It's too hot, too many mosquitoes.
There are lot's of clerics/healers/temples there because of all the sickness.
That is a very cool city. (for a game)
Lot's of atmosphere.
brb

and other than the addition of the mosquitoes and the need for clerics its exactly what i was going for :D
but i like the mosquitoes
such a great flavor peice that I never wouldda thought of :D

To add those great elements you just need to think about the basic stuff
The building blocks of the world
They are in a swamp? Well.. What's in a swamp?
Maybe There are alligators around too?
Or Fantasy creatures?
Like... you know... creatures that live in swamps. :P

would be fantasy creatures mixed in, it's for a D&D campaign
maybe throw in a swarm druid for them to fight
I am starting to build out this part of the world early too, so I have time to really flesh it out and make it noticably different than the tranquil forest area where they are now
yet, since it's part of the same kingdom, I need to weave in elements that feel the same (hence mostly human, but closer to the elven jungles so a higher number of elves, etc)

i will have nightmares tonight
mix it with a clown and a spider and that is my worst fear incarnate
XD

8:48 AM
So, Mosquitoes are the least of the problems :P

I feel like that could suck out your entire insides and leave nothing behind but a skin sack

They are Tiny.

like a kid drinking a juice box
Enter custom monster The Dire Stirge

hehe
Alpha Stirge.
Stirge Hive?

What you want is a smaller stirge, with a longer and more deadly straw. Harder to hit, but tons more damage.

8:50 AM
Stirge Queen... :P

@GMNoob great now I feel bugs crawling all over me D:

Last night, I had a hair on my glasses. I thought a bug was flying in my face, and attacking my eyes.
My wife was laughing at my scratchy itchy slappy dance.

hahaha
i have done the same thing before

9:09 AM
I am excited to get to this new area now
we dont really have plans to head there soon, but by golly I am ready to get the team on the road! :D

dimension door trap!

I might have to, I feel like if left to their own devices to follow my clues we wont get there until the fall
(summer break kinda gets in the way, ya'know?)
there's nothing in 4e that allows changelings to detect if other people are shapeshifting, is there?
D&D 4e, that is

not that I remember
everyone is able to do an insight check at -4 I think

@MC_Hambone It's ok, "4e" is pretty universally recognized as D&D. At least for values of "universally" comprised of "here".
6

@lisardggY hahahaha, very nice
would that insight be something I ask for, or do I only worry about it if the players suspect the NPC as being a changeling or other shapeshifter?

9:18 AM
well it goes both ways
the changeling has to do a bluff check vs insight at +4
I think, something like that
I can't remember exactly. It's in the rules for the changeling ability

so I'd make a bluff against passive insight?

that's how I would do it

sounds good. My players know "something" is wrong with the King, they just dont know what yet
they made friends with one of the kingdoms Barons, and when the minotaur PC got arrested the party asked the Baron to talk to the King (the two were friends, having fought together in the army... along with the Baron of the newly named Blood Hollow and 3 other Barons in holds around the kingdom)

There was a great question on here I answered a while ago about changelings in 4e (I think I answered, maybe I just saw it, let me find it for you)

When their Baron friend talked to the King he told them that something seemed to be off with the King and to keep an eye on him

9:23 AM

A: Is there a shapeshifter that needs to keep its quarry alive?

Inbar RoseAccording to this article on the wizards website: In addition to their shapechanging, doppelgangers have the ability to read thoughts. In the short term, a doppelganger can read thoughts to aid it when tricking people around it. When impersonating a specific victim, a doppelganger likes...

Here.

since we have 2 quests going on at the same time and 1 of our players has an inactive Rogue, they sent the rogue off to investigate "off screen" as it were

Oh. You asked it.
hahaha

i was gonna say ;)

lol nice!

Classic.

9:24 AM
I think it was my fisrt question
I have been building to this for a while now :D

You have been planning this for a while :)
....

lol
jinx!

Indeed

you owe me a coke
;)

Sure.
I'll pay you in Unicoins.

9:25 AM
YESSSS!
I love unicoins

So, I think I answered your question pretty well there! :)
Did you remember that it was me who answered that question?

I did not, but i do remember the answer
and I have been basing the story off of it

the rogue will end up following the King for a bit, but lose him along the way (the Doppelganger will shift into a commoner and change clothes)
so the group will have a vague sense of direction and area to search
but my plan is for them to not really know where to go until the are able to question the Baron of Blood Hollow

That's some serious foresight.

9:28 AM
well, since the rogue is not the active player character for that player at the moment, i figured I would be semi nice
and give them that much :D

Not sure what that means, but cool! :)

The player who created teh rogue is currently playing a warlord, but the rogue is still alive and an ally of the group
since we have another active quest and the following the king bit is overly stealth heavy I agreed to let the Rogue follow the King out side of game time
the player wont control the rogue and I'll just give them a vague anwer to what the rogue found out

Neat.

(with 9 people it's mostly for the sake of keeping game time focused on the majority of the players)

Though - I would say that the Rogue has become an "ally" of the party.
And there are rules for how to deal with that (at least in D&D 3.x)
But of course - this rogue is much more than just any ally really. So your custom game ruling is probably best.

9:32 AM
there might be rules for that in 4e too, i just havent looked into it
perhaps I ought to put that up on the stack

Or a quick google search ?

that too :D
hmm what should I search? "what rules are there for "benched" PCs in 4e" didnt come up with anything... not sure the correct wording for the question

First result I found: dandwiki.com/wiki/UA:Contacts

so "contacts" is the key term
I can use that article with some minor tweaks tho
I see it is written for 3.5
"Sense Motive" gave it away :D

Meh.
It's just an idea really. I remember it was in the DMG as well
that if you have an ally or contact who is .. say .. a blacksmith.. then you assume he has craft(blacksmith) (or whatever skill best suits him) at highest possible level. According to the idea that the contact/allies level is not more than yours.
So, if you were level 3 and you had a blacksmith ally, he has craft(blacksmith) with 7. (D&D 3.x rules)

BWAHAHAHA
classic
@InbarRose was just thinking, this would explain why the rogue can't keep up his tail on the (changeling) King... he (the rogue) is only level 5... so the king would likely notice he has a tail and shapeshifts to get away

@lisardggY Maybe due to the fact that D&D is one of the few games that radically change from edition to edition. Was it Shadowrun, I'd have said Shadowrun 4e, because 4e alone does not identify anything.

@Zachiel There may be that, but mainly I think it's because D&D is the "default" RPG, still the most prominent and identified with the hobby as a whole.

10:14 AM
@lisardggY Also that.
Now, if I wanted to put up some... place, where I could discuss about NPC creation for D&D 3.5, and balancing against my party, what do you think would be an appropriate place? What kind of people would be even interested in discussing about -that-?

@Zachiel Depending on who's online I'd say right here is a good place to theorize about any thing
I couldnt help since I don't know 3.5, but there are a lot of people here that do. :)

Yes
@Zachiel You could open a new chat room, like BESW has his Spoil Lair.
Although - the general chat is not so crowded at the moment. I don't think anyone would think you shouldn't discuss it in here.

10:33 AM
I have toyed with the idea of starting a chat room for discussing topics related to my campaign. But have been a little tentative about it since I dunno who would be interested in hangin out in there feeding my ego :D

@MC_Hambone that's why I'm not doing that

11:02 AM
What has it got to do with ego?
It's a simple way to keep the topic on your campaign, and easier to go back and look at stuff. Instead of going through all the posts here.
Chat rooms are not some sacred thing.
If I wanted I could open a chat room for discussing a particular question.
And then reference it in an answer to that question. This way the chat history would forever be stored for the discussion about a question.
That's what the site is about.
Other people who are designing campaigns might want to be able to read through your process.

Well, I don't relly think the process would be that interesting, plus I'd be just upgrading monsters from a published, official source. I'm not sure "forever be stored" is the right way to do it.
(I'm sorry if I come and go, but I'm farming in some MMORPG instances right now)

No worries. I am at work.
My comings and goings are not even mine to decide.
Someone downvoted me for no real reason. Then pretty much gave the same answer I did. rpg.stackexchange.com/q/35800/5841 (What do you guys think?)

11:24 AM
Well it's not exactly the same answer, even after you clarified.
While you say "no" he says "ST call"

He says "the rules say no but I say ST call"

Still ok to express that in a different answer to me. I guess the downvote was because of the non-explicit answer you gave at first. (and he retracted the downvote now)

I see that.
Still, I hate trigger-happy downvoters.

I'm not sure that you needed to bring that table in, though.
It takes up a big chunk of your answer and makes it look like you're answering the wrong question.

Good point, I link to it anyway.

11:28 AM
I'd go by the assumption that unless the question is about the point cost of abilities, the OP knows the point cost of abilities and doesn't need to be taught that.

@lisardggY I re-wrote my answer: rpg.stackexchange.com/a/35801/5841

11:58 AM
@mc I'd take a look!

@BESW Hello!

Hey.
I'm on the tablet only for a few days, so my presence is limited and my ping notification is delayed.

what should I name the room? I was thinking "MC Hambone's Rap Session"

That works.

@MC_Hambone That totally works!

12:08 PM
i"ll do that then

Morning

mornin'
BOOM! My chat has been created

Link

 MC Hambone's Rap Session

This room is for anyone who wants to help Hambone discuss idea...

12:27 PM
Yo-Yo-Yo In the House! :P

1:03 PM
@MC_Hambone The DM trolling his son by having him killed by his boyfriend.

@TRiG i thought it was pretty funny :D

@MC_Hambone Within the context of the characters in the comic, it's even better. Dylan (the dad; the DM) has an evil sense of humour.
I've never played any of these games. I have a good friend who's into them, but she's in Belfast and I'm in Tullamore.

bummer, these games are really fun if you are into cooperative story telling

@MC_Hambone It's the sort of thing I imagine I'd love. I just need to earn more money so I can spend more weekends away. The train to Belfast is comfortable (standard seating on the Enterprise feels like first class seating anywhere else in the country) and has excellent coastal views, so it's not as if the journey would be arduous. She's part of a gaming group. I could join them! I just need more moolah.

another option, though not ideal for only 1 person not at the table, could be a website called roll20.net
its an online table top you can use to make custom adventures, move pieces and roll virtual dice
its great for groups that are scattered around
(but like i said probably not the best thing for a group with only 1 absentee players)

1:14 PM
@MC_Hambone Nice idea, but I think I already spend too much of my life in front of a computer.

@TRiG I think we all do ;)

@MC_Hambone I even have a smartphone now, which is useful, I suppose, but do I really want a computer in my pocket?

@TRiG Yes, yes you do.

it is very helpful imo
i mostly use my phone for calling and text, however when i need the smart device it's super nice to have it

I barely use my phone for calling or text.
No one calls or texts anymore.
Emails, Calendar, Maps, Skype, Whatsapp, FB, Call, text. (The order I use my phone things for)
Maybe. I dunno. I am a horrible judge of how I spent my time.
But it's very useful! :)

1:19 PM
@InbarRose I call people.

@InbarRose Hate Skype. Hate Facebook. Am vaguely aware of what Whatsapp is, but have never used it. Have no need for maps (I walk everywhere, or take public transport).

@Aaron I was exaggerating obviously, people still call and text.. but rarely.
@TRiG Maps gets you bus schedules, and routes... very useful.

@InbarRose I have been on the phone too damn much recently. Calling people every day preparing to finish purchasing a house.

@InbarRose getthere.ie is all I need. It integrates the schedules of the trains and a bunch of private bus companies.

@Aaron Well - that is important business! :)

1:24 PM
@InbarRose My Anti Socialism is at an all time High though because of it. I think I am going to avoid people for a few weeks after everything is done.

i use my phone for Texts, FB chat, calls, random internet searches, and games in that order.... but i spend most of my time at my computer. So I generally do most of my interneting on the PC :D
also I only JUST got skype yesterday
and I dunno if i like it or not... my allergies make me breathe heavy and I get self conscious about that over voice comm programs that dont have a push to talk system

1:44 PM
I accept suggestions for snarky but informative names about a room where to discuss and build personalized NPC statblocks.

AFK for a stretch, will ruminate on your room title @Zachiel

@MC_Hambone get a push to talk mic ;)

1:58 PM
I was thinking something along the lines of "the monsternomicon" or "the enemy forge"
but those aren't witty enough
@BESW you own the Spoil-lair, right? [/rhetoric]. Can you change its name and description freely or do you need a mod for that kind of things?
[patiently waits for belated pings to happen]
oh, he left.

If you are a room owner you can change the name whenever you want.
You can also decide that only approved users can write in the room.
But you can never prevent anyone from joining a room.
You can view edits/deleted posts and move posts to other rooms (like the trash room if you want to "delete" a message)
You can manage bookmarks and stars/pinned items.
Modify the feeds / tags.

2:14 PM
Woah, too much information XD

(thanks)

Nothing is irreversible.
Well
That's not true
If you delete stars/bookmarks they are gone forever.
But otherwise everything you do can be reversed/changed.

in The Nameless Room (yet), 30 secs ago, by Zachiel
As the first poster and owner of this new, shiny room, I guess it's my duty to tell the world why it's there. I'm playing a D&D official campaign again but I'd like to upgrade all my encounters so that they're a challenge for the party, instead of being the easy fights whew only Int 12 wizards would have problems.

Long live the Nameless Room \o/

2:26 PM
My fantasy for names needs a boost. Where can I buy an upgrade?

3:01 PM
I've been too hasty. I don't really need that chatroom to make things challenging.
in The Nameless Room (yet), 1 min ago, by Zachiel
oh, nevermind, they're dead, that thing is a CR 6

Question about Archtypes.

Shoot

Can I choose not to take one of the Archtype abilities and keep the original ability?

uhmmmm I have no idea. Do you have the prd link handy?

@Zachiel Nevermind I missed something the first time I read it.
when an archetype includes multiple alternate class features, a character must take them all —often blocking the character from ever gaining certain standard class features, but replacing them with other options....

3:13 PM
I'm doing a test

 The Statblock Forge

Zachiel's PC and NPC building place
yes, it works as intended

2 hours later…
5:41 PM
I wonder if a better room name could get more people involved u_u

5:57 PM
I suspect its more that there are simply not many people around at the moment

I am busier than usual or I would join. @Zachiel

and if I had any knowledge of DnD 4e at all then I would too

7:08 PM
@Phil It's 3.5
@Aaron and, about the spoilers, it's Expedition to Undermountain

lol, that's even worse - I've at least played 4e a couple of times :o)

@Phil Again, I can't but say "HoNk!" when I see that face, even if nobody is getting the reference.

I am indeed confused
what's the reference?

I could link you a reference, but it would be a spoiler if you were ever going to read homestuck. Which I think everybody should (because it's full of awesome) and shouldn't (because it's addictive and long. Very long)

@Zachiel You want long read Questionable content. It has 2200 something pages now. It is really good as well.
I have read them all.

7:29 PM
@Aaron Homestuck starts with page 1901 and goes to page 8752. True, some pages are a single image with no text, but still... 6852 pages.

Why does it start on 1901?

I have no friggin' idea
It just does
Maybe it has some meaning we'll get revealed sooner or later. The comic is chocked full of Ceckov's guns.

Having a master work weapon grants you a +1 but once you add enchantments that MW bonus no longer applies correct?

7:53 PM
It still applies (useful to know in anti-magic fields), but it's the same type of the magic one so they don't stack - they overlap.

@Zachiel Ah. Thanks
If I already have normal Natural armor and I get a Amulet of natural armor would the amulet overlap the nat armor or add to it? The should add together sense one is an enhancement bonus right?
HA
Victory dance. I linked it correctly.

@Zachiel It stacks

@Aaron I have no idea

Oh.

I renamed my chat

 The Statblock Forge

Zachiel's PC and NPC building place
It's still temporary, but it might stick

So I just figured out how to give my character + 18 to his AC

How would you guys describe an increase in dexterity? I have a character who can alter his body to increase his Dex and I am trying to think of a way that it would effect his body.
Str would be larger muscles. Con would be thicker skin but how to describe dexterity.

I have an idea. Let me fetch a comic page
It could just be more elastic muscles, enhanced nerves, longer tendons, but my favourite pseudo-science thing is Ring's Sonia Road, from Air Gear. Hyperventilation inducing an excess of nitrogen in the organism, causing nitrogen bubbles to be born between bones, allowing for attrite reduction in the joints.
I can't find the page where it's explained in the manga
In the manga it's also painful, but it doesn't need to be for your character
