Q: Links invisible until hovered over

KRyanFor some reason, as of earlier today, the text of links in main’s homepage is no longer visible for me until after I’ve hovered over the link. Links to questions in a tag I follow do appear, however. On the flip-side, everything (link or not) is invisible in the Looking for More? box, the network...

For those interested, one dedicated soul has been busy reverse-engineering Unicoins so that you can have them forever!

Q: Help me reverse-engineer Unicoin

DoorknobHere; have the full, uncompressed source code for Unicoin you code monkeys! http://dev.stackoverflow.com/content/js/stub-uc.js This section looks pretty interesting: var loadingVersions = {}; var powerupDeferreds = {}; function registerPowerup(id, factory, noNeedToCache) { var def = poweru...

@JonathanHobbs Just wanted to mention that I like how Fate Looms is coming along! I've been checking the blog, even if I haven't been checking in here. :)

Out of the entire brouhaha, I mostly feel bad for the answerer, whose post became casus beli and got dragged down by ongoing feuds. Not a great introduction to the site for a relatively new user.

@Magician Yeah. Just downvote the dang post if you disagree with it and leave it at that.

3:43 AM
@KyleSykes Yay! \o/ Current task is to mess around so I can get drag-and-drop working, so you can put stuff in drawers & take it out.

Woo!

@Magician Yeah :( I feel bad for my part in it, I absolutely slammed it in my meta post, then realised a little while later it actually wasn't that bad except it was hitting a lot of our red flags
by that point it was at something crazy like -7 or -8

A: Why would you want to play with a deck bigger than 60 cards in MTG?

E RileyWhy would you play with a larger sized deck? 1- More fun 2- To show those who rely on law of probability that you can throw that out the window when you're dealing with thousands of options(number of existing cards.) It's the exact same science that "proves" that there is no life on other planets...

It's okay for downvoted posts to just stick around.

I don't know where the idea it should be deleted came from, really. Certainly it wasn't on my mind when I commented and flagged.
I saw a post that could be improved, despite being rude and not answering the whole question, but which I was failing to help improve.
Suddenly, hellfire and brimstone and I was really tired and went to bed.
Both the deletion issue and the idea anyone thought raw only answers were desirable came out of left field.

@BESW for me i was put off by it advising to entirely put aside stuff that seemed important and to not worry about stuff that seemed relevant
it was only a while later after thinking about it further and reading it a couple more times i understood where it was coming from

I made my own post on the meta thread.

@BESW I saw!

@BESW Yeah, the whole thing was a thinly veiled cover for other issues.

This whole thing got blown way out of proportion :(
there are days i have nothing in the sidebar starred. for the past week or so, most things in the sidebar have had one of my stars on it.
then one day elapses, and it's back to almost nothing.
[changes this]

5:24 AM
[Flops]
Heya @BESW

Hi.

'sup?

@shatterspike1 I partially agree with you there, but certainly agree with your core issue - the problem is not with railroading, it's with the players disliking the railroading so much they explicitly call the GM out on it.
That could either mean the railroading is done badly, or that the players dislike railroading. Neither would mean railroading as a concept is bad - it works great in some games - it's just that it doesn't work here.

@lisardggY Maaaybe, but I'd argue that the technique of illusionism is 9001% better in all cases, since oyu get the railroading advantages without giving the jig up

@lisardggY I think railroading in a storyline sense can work well with the right group of players; if a GM consistently provides interesting combats to a group that loves playing for the combat, they're making choices about the thing they consider most important. Maybe they'll even enjoy the story, too.
@Lord_Gareth If an illusionist GM is good at improvising impacts on his plot due to player unpredictability, is it still illusionism?

@shatterspike1 Depends on if he's still filling in every plot location with the one map he prepped for the session :p
That's a thing I'd do - I'd have a layout and wait to see what dungeon they walked into
Then just add the layout
Bam, player-proof plot

@shatterspike1 Exactly. Many players enjoy having control over the little things - like their own characters' behaviors, or the cinematics of a scene - but don't care about impacting the overarching plotline.

5:51 AM
@Lord_Gareth It's not illusionism, it's RECYCLING! (but no, seriously, I doubt even the firmest opponent of railroading would oppose this).

I prefer both to the weird "you didn't follow my plot so the villain blows up the world after six weeks of you farting around saving goblin babies."

@BESW At least the GM won't be invited back.

Oh my god.

Q: Minor Creation and food

Baka-MastermindSo, a humgry wizard walks into a bar... And then, he gets kicked out of there before he's able to get any food in his stomach. He throws some curses and then remembers - he has some olives left, as well as a Minor Creation Spell prepared. So ,he casts the spell, gets more olives than he can eat a...

This reminds me of one of those Harry Potter fanfictions.
3

That's... I don't know what to make of that.

This is answered in Ars Magica :D

5:57 AM
I can't find the quote, but I think it's from Harry Potter and the Method of Rationality.
Harry is asked, in transmutation class, why nobody is allowed to transmute, say, a chair into food, or water, or a gas.

He dies of an embolism when the partially digested food turns to air in his blood.
2

@BESW Nope. Starvation rules only talk about eating food, not digesting it. His hyper-efficient D20 metabolism rips everything useful out of the food and leaves behind no waste (no pooping rules either), so there's no matter to un-appear.

If you turn a chair into gas or food or water, you might eat it, or inhale it, and digest it. Then, the teacher asks him: what will happen next? The food, or drink, or gas, will be distributed throughout his body, and become a part of him. And then, the teacher asks? It'll turn back into a chair.

Which is what you get for trying to bring science into a D&D discussion

Peasant Rail Cannon.

6:06 AM
@shatterspike1 Pleasant Rail Cannon

@JonathanHobbs Orbital Friendship Cannon

@Lord_Gareth Is friendship delivered via tungsten rods?

@JonathanHobbs Nah, we got Cadence to rig the whole thing up. It fires rainbows and mind rape.

@Lord_Gareth Sounds terrifying. Are they available for purchase?

@JonathanHobbs If you play Genius: the Transgression you can even start the game with one.

6:16 AM
@Lord_Gareth can we do a crossover with Princess: the Hopeful?

@shatterspike1 Ahahahahaaha I approve

You see, the Princesses provide the power source for the orbital friendship cannon. The Geniuses are just there to form it into a coherent beam of destruction (and rainbows)

No need. Genii can do it on their own with their mind control discipline.

Well... now I want to play this game.

@Magician We always said that rather than burning Herbam vis to make food permanent, and given that much Herbam vis is of plant nature in origin, you might as well just eat the vis.

6:30 AM
@lisardggY Twilight dinery & fine cakes!

@lisardggY What if the Herbam is a few golden leaves?

@shatterspike1 You make tea. And sweeten it with warping. Delicious, delicious warping.

@Magician "This tea made me trip so hard, I went into Twlight"

6:57 AM
Our covenant has some olive trees are Rego vis. It's tea that moves you.
/me slaps himself, both for that pun and those forthcoming.

Morning all.

Morning!
The unicoins have gone; they are no more.
Stack Exchange has ceased to trade unicorn currency and unicoins have returned to being legal tender only in those countries in which unicorns are recognised as citizens.

7:16 AM
Well, I think this is due to Unicoin inflation, someone started printing fake currency, and the whole system collapsed. Apparently using a currency that is so rare that no one knows exactly what it should look like is easy to forge - since no one knows how to regulate it. What will they think of next? LochNessDollars?

@InbarRose ... yes
that sounds appropriate
coming to a scotland near you
apparently some towns in the US print local money, which is roughly equivalent to USD, but since it's only really useful within that town, it sponsors trade within the town itself

I wonder. Is Scotland called Scotland because it has lots of Scots in it, or are Scots called Scots because they come from Scotland?

if scotland allow something similar, then... that's possible!

"Jee there there are a lot of Scots here - lets's call this place Scotland"

@InbarRose ... now i am reading about the chain of etymology leading to scotland. this is how I know this absurd quantity of things.

7:31 AM
@JonathanHobbs Hurray for information! :

Local-only money is known as scrip, and has a bad history with 19th century factory towns where it was used as salaries, keeping the money in the employers pocket while making it hard for workers to leave.
But also, Emperor Norton, so that makes it better.

@lisardggY Ah, good old Norton. What a legend.

7:57 AM
I went looking for his grave when I was in SF, but either it was moved or the guidebooks I used got it wrong.

3 hours later…
10:42 AM
Noo, all my unicoin powers are gone!

@GMNoob I think we only had unicorn powers whilst the unicorns were around

unicoins, like unicorns, apparently don't exist and were just stories made up by people.

11:22 AM
New ideas about the Pale Lords and the Lightning Kings, if anyone is still interested in the Spoil Lair.

11:46 AM
I find that drawing on two or three separate parts of real-life history and weaving them together in entertaining ways is one of the best ways for me to create a setting.
@Lord_Gareth [wave]

Heya. AFK

12:01 PM
So how's it, @BESW?

Urghlf. Busy, stressed, etc.

@GMNoob never happened, the copious screencaps are all fabrications

> The colours red, blue and green are real. The colour yellow is a mystical experience shared by everybody.

@Lord_Gareth So, I spent half my business meeting this evening brainstorming for my elf-only D&D-turned-Fate setting.
@ThalesPereira Hi!

If it makes you feel better I may or may not have created a psychic demon whose body is composed of mentally-charged sound, preternaturally skilled in deception and possessed of the ability to wreck entire buildings with a single unholy shriek.

Hi everyone!

12:10 PM
Hey

@Lord_Gareth Why would that make me feel better?!

@BESW Boy, that question sure was polemyc
xD

Indeed it was

Glad that everything is better now.

@ThalesPereira A lot of what wound up happening had nothing to do with your answer, and everything to do with some... awkward interpersonal drama... that's been stewing for a while.
And then it was 1am and I went to bed and in the morning it was hellfire and brimstone.

12:12 PM
I figured that out eventually, actually. It was just some sort of escape goat

@BESW Because you get XP for killing it! If you can, you know, detect it before it ambushes the party and destroys their minds.
@ThalesPereira The phrase you're searching for is 'scapegoat', my friend.

I think you mean scapegoat, but the image I have of an escape goat is just too good :)

No, im refencing the goat with rogue levels.
4

Here, have a star.

this goat
xD

12:13 PM
lol

Hee.

english and me are friends for a little while, but we can´t get along really well sometimes

Morning

@BESW Frankly, this needs to get addressed one of these days. It can't keep simmering.

@BESW Welcome to Nightvale?

12:15 PM
@ThalesPereira With that in mind, would you prefer if we mention when things like idioms (such as "escape goat") look a little off, or would you prefer to be left alone on it? We're fine either way, probably at least a third of our regular chatters are not native English speakers (and yet write it better, generally, than the native speakers).
@waxeagle Quote is from Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

@BESW Ironic isn't it?

@BESW lol, that's great. It would be right at home in Nightvale though

Oh, i can figure then out. Not hard for me, I just sometimes get too... "etimologic" on some words

@Aaron Not really, people who have to learn the rules actually know the rules, while people who learn it through osmosis never have to learn the rules at all; native-speech accuracy is a gut-level intuition thing which is only as accurate as the level of language they were exposed to.

@BESW You can correct me, no problens in that

12:17 PM
@ThalesPereira You mentioned Brazil; is Portuguese your native tongue?
If that's too personal, feel free not to answer.

That, italian, a bit of french and english. Oh, and some spanish
so its kinda.. easy to mess up words on my mind

Very cool. We've got a handful of Italians on the chat. [waves @Zachiel]

[waves back]

@BESW Good point. I think learning another language helps people with their communication quite a bit. I am thinking of trying to find a Spanish class. I took a Spanish class in summer school and picked it up quickly.

@BESW But really, a handful? Here on the chat?

12:19 PM
@BESW I still prefer english, tho. Easier to everyone to understand
@BESW Portuguese is a beatifull language, too.

I think we have some Italian on the main site but I'm the only regular here

*Beautifull
or... something like that word

I'm only fluent in English, myself, but I live on an island that sees people from all over the Pacific and Asia coming through.

*Beautiful. Don't ask me why.
It somewhere lost an l

That´s what confuses me.
Its full of Beauty, so..
It drops an L.
It´s so full that there´s not enough space for all letters?

12:20 PM
XD

American English, in particular, treats letters like socks in a dryer: you sometimes lose a few here and there.

I always hated that word.
the spelling of it at least.

@Aaron I feel like that too...

I can never spell it right :.(

I kinda memorized it, but there are so many words I have problems with. Let's see if I can write it the right way this time...
strength

12:22 PM
Oh boy. The "H". I hate those "H"
Nigth ot Night? I never remember the rigth (or right) one.

It's usually ht. Except when it's not.

there are so many 'rules' like that :o)

@Phil HoNk

@ThalesPereira I assume you're aware of the Portuguese SO project? (obviously your english is good enough for regular SO, but I'm sure they love folks who are fluent in both)

@Phil Don't forget their is an exception to each rule as well.

12:23 PM
English is a mess, no confusing that.

@BESW I think the phrase you're looking for is 'horrible bastard language spoken by a diverse group of cultures who all disrespect each other's dialects and refuse to find a common consensus'

It's a mish-mash of three or four different main languages, which borrows words from every other language it meets (often by force) and then semi-randomly decides whether and how quickly those new words should be modified to meet whatever semi-solid standard the language has at that particular point in time.

@Lord_Gareth Yea. Boston doesn't use Rs and then you have the south... I can't describe their accent.

@waxeagle Portuguese SO is really a bad ideia, I think. Most of us, Dev´s, must KNOW REALLY WELL english to build our softwares

12:25 PM
@Aaron There are two kinds of southern accents: the southern drawl and the southern gabble.

@Aaron Annoying 9/10 times, inexplicably sexually attractive the other 1/10?

@BESW I am referring to the gabble

Case in point: whenever Anna Paquin opens her mouth
Mmm...keep talking Anna

@Lord_Gareth The drawl. Sexy as hell.
@Lord_Gareth Why is that?
@Lord_Gareth Oh yea.

Drawl: "Ah gawt awl mah aht supplahs at Mahkel's."
Gabble: "Y'ficksin' tuh gawot?"

12:26 PM
@Aaron A friend from CA once told me: "In Texas, people don't say hello. If they did, they would still saying that final o one day later"

@BESW I had an abortive discussion at work the other day with a guy who claimed that English, unlike other popular languages, was a constructed language, rather than a language that evolved by usage.

@lisardggY He's wrong.

I say "abortive" because the only response I could find was "No, it isn't" and move on.

@Aaron I went to college in South Carolina. My first roommate had a gabble that was nearly unintelligible.

@Zachiel I have never heard a Texas accent.

12:27 PM
He hated it, because he was really smart but nobody took him seriously.

@BESW The worst is the people who are fast talkers.

He was doing everything he could to lose the accent as fast as possible.

I'd like to post something Portuguese I always try to sing and never can, in celebration for @ThalesPereira joining us here. youtube.com/watch?v=0TN0qTsAKOE

Average speed with an accent is hard enough to understand. Then you have gabblers who speak a mile a minute.

@Aaron Heeelloooooooouuuuu

12:29 PM
@BESW I think that's becoming less of an issue, but thick accents are still a deterrent for academics :( (especially specific accents associated with low class/low education/low income areas)

@Zachiel You speak Italian correct?

@Lord_Gareth Um. Context for that image? It seems out of place to me.

@Aaron Somehow, I don't think context happened.
@jcughes88 Hi!

@Aaron I do.

12:30 PM
You'll need 20+ rep on any SE site to talk in chat, but you're welcome to hang out until then.

@BESW Well as long as I am not the only confused one I am all good. lol.
@Zachiel Do you listen to nightcore? I was just listening to a song I think was Italian according to the lyric translation I found.

@Aaron I have no idea what this nightcore you're talking about is. But if you could provide me a link I could check it myself. Oh, wait, I meant mahself.

It's Italian, yes

@ThalesPereira So, I spent about two years in 4e, after seven in 3.5. I would've switched sooner, but I believed the "4e is an MMO" propaganda that it didn't allow build customisation or encounter variety.
So I had to wait until the problems with 3.5 got too much for my group to tolerate. I loved 4e, because by comparison to 3.5, 4e's consistency and solidity was really nice.

12:35 PM
@BESW I thought 4e just came out not that long ago?

After a while, though, I discovered that my biggest problem wasn't with 3.5, it was with D&D as a whole concept. I've since moved on to RPG systems which provide better native support for the kind of character-driven, non-physical-combat-centric games I like to run.
@Aaron 2007, I believe.
And I first started taking 4e seriously as an option almost exactly three years ago.
And my final 4e session was... almost exactly a year ago.

@Aaron There is no context only Zuul

@Lord_Gareth Zuul?

@Aaron Ghostbusters reference.

12:38 PM
@BESW Oh. Unfortunately(<Another word I never spell right) I have not seen that in a long time.

@Aaron I have trouble with that word too sometimes. Also thief.

Hi.

@InbarRose, @Magician [wave]

ooo, double wave.

[used both hands]

12:39 PM
@BESW I'm... nine years on 3.5, and..

@BESW Would a triple wave involve a foot?

@BESW Trying to fly again?
@Aaron Or a very complex cyclic pattern.

@Aaron Eyebrows.

@BESW don´t know how many on 4E. And a few on PF, too

@BESW Wiggle wiggle.

12:40 PM
@BESW I built a custom game system based on PF to my games. 3.5 have lots of flaws, as do 4E, and i lost my patience with both

@ThalesPereira I left my South Carolina group about the time 4e came out, and they went straight from 3.5 to Pathfinder because they "wanted a living system."

@ThalesPereira PF is awesome! Of course that is just like my opinion man.
PF isn't quite as broken as 3.5 as well. No pun pun builds possible.

@BESW PF is awesome! I double aaron on that.

@Aaron Actually, over here the ability to greet via eyebrow is a pretty basic social skill.

@BESW ???
Really?

12:42 PM
Indeed.

Do you just wiggle them or what? Here that is viewed as flirting.

It usually involves quickly making eye contact, then raising and lowering both eyebrows at once while simultaneously lifting one's chin in the person's direction.

@BESW 4E have some sinthetic feel that is not really what I want on RPG. "Solid rules" to me is a deffect, not a quality

@ThalesPereira After the wifty wibbly-wobbly-ness of 3.5's patched-together contradictory subsystems, 4e was like a breath of fresh air.
But yes, now that I've got D&D out of my system, I much prefer fiction-first engines.

12:45 PM
@BESW When I built my ND20 system, I kept in mind the narrativist/simulationist viewpoint, so it came out pretty different from classic D&D
but having the same core ideas. I banished XP level up, tho

I currently use Fate Core/Accelerated as my go-to system, and I'm experimenting with other systems like Princes' Kingdom, Flying Temple, and Lady Blackbird as I work to create a custom system based on the Friendship is Magic TV show.

There´s a Brazillian system called 4D&T that works really well on Friedship is Magic

I've only got one regular player right now, so "twosies" games are very interesting to me.

@Aaron Eliminating TO did not make the system better, mostly because it didn't change how the game plays at the actual table. Call me when they errata Dazing Spell out of existence.

@BESW We do the nod part but don't involve our eyebrows.

12:47 PM
@ThalesPereira No chance of a translation, is there?

I could make one for ya
It´s a short, simple system
extremely expansible

@ThalesPereira But can you see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

er...

@ThalesPereira I would be extremely grateful (hey, another word I can't spell!).

@Lord_Gareth as long as I respect Friendship is Magic, im not really a bronnie.

12:49 PM
@ThalesPereira Gareth often considers context optional.

That reminds me @BESW, how's the job offer with DSP going?

@Lord_Gareth I haven't heard back. Should I email him to see what's up?

@BESW Yeap, i figured that xD
If anyone is interested, I will be hosting a game online in a few days.

Frankly I've been so swamped it kind of slipped my mind.

It will be on 2ic, a Brazillian Chat System for RPG (Really good)

12:51 PM
@BESW Yeah, check in and stay friendly. Bossman's had to deal with a perfect storm of stress including, but not limited to, one of his lead designers leaving for a month (personal issues), getting sued by another company, getting Path of War's first book released, starting the new RPG we're writing ([/Creative Lead] [/nervous as hell)...
The adventure path project he's got me spearheading...
He be a busy person. Reminders help

@Lord_Gareth You design games?

Yeah, my work's been getting inane, my tech is freaking out, and taking care of my dad's been a bit tougher lately.
(And the Bahá'í administrative year is coming to a close, so reports and budgets everywhere for the various things I do with that.)

@InbarRose I've been writing for Dreamscarred Press, yes. Mostly what I've been doing is 3rd party content for Pathfinder, but he's got me on point for a brand-new RPG that I'm not allowed to share details about. I'm handling worldbuilding, flavor, civilization-building rules and cracking the whip on the rest of the team.

@Lord_Gareth I hope whip-cracking isn't part of my potential job description.
I just get tangled up and fall over.

@BESW Depends on if you have 'lead' in your job title :p

12:55 PM
I guess I'll have to... [puts on sunglasses] get the lead out.

@Lord_Gareth cool.

[Looks at Youtube, freezes in fury]
WHAT SIMPERING CUR THOUGHT THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO FOR HEADSTRONG BY TRAPT OUT OF CLIPS FROM THE TWILIGHT MOVIES?

@Lord_Gareth Eaasy, boy, calm down. Want a sugar cube?

@Lord_Gareth KILL IT WITH FIRE

@Lord_Gareth I don't know what your theme is or anything, but I have a friend who is a writer and he did a few things for world of darkness. He is always looking for payed work (being a writer and all) So if you need anything in that kind of theme (or similar) .. well.. I know a writer :) - I am referring to short novels or chapter intro's etc.. that catch the flavor of the world, not about rules or world building (though it's part of that.) Heck - you know what I am talking about...

12:59 PM
@ThalesPereira I won't have the time to commit to a game, but thanks for the offer. I've starred it so others can see it.

@InbarRose He does the vignettes at the start of the chapters?

(Hanging out on chat all day is one thing; I just keep it in the background while I work and there's no pressure to participate. Committing to a game is something else entirely, because even when I have the time professionally I might at any moment have to go help my dad for an unknown amount of time.)

@Lord_Gareth He has done some. But mostly short novels.
He was working on a title that no longer exists (because white wolf was bought out and shut the project down) which was about Angels called Seraph. (Not sure if I can say much more about this)

@InbarRose Oh man you just reminded me of Supernatural
"I'm sorry if my 'people skills' are a bit 'rusty' but I just spent most of the last year as a multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent!"

@InbarRose It says something about my upbringing that the first thing "Seraph" makes me think of is two-foot-tall mammoths.

1:06 PM
@Lord_Gareth :)

The following image is SFW, but slightly risque

@Lord_Gareth And is relephant because?

It isn't.

@Lord_Gareth Excellent. I like the way you work.

Did we not just have the conversation where I consider context to be for others?

1:07 PM
@Lord_Gareth Not with me. (although, that proves your point)

@BESW can fill you in

@Lord_Gareth I think I understand, the summary is quite explicit .

Oh, man. I kinda want to protect this question right off the bat.
....but I don't appear to have that button on that page yet. Huh.

@BESW if only we could

It seems like a duplicate.
That question must have been asked already,.

1:10 PM
@BESW it's mod only for the first 24 hrs

@BESW Sounds odd to me. If you can protect it on sight it's way less useful since there's a 24-hour time window for people to reply, whatever their experience with the site.

@Zachiel Yeah, but it sounds like the kind of thing that SE implemented only after much sturm und drang without it.

@Zachiel protect was developed to help with reddit/digg storms, there is also autoprotection after a certain number of an answers
(and Auto-CW, and they are talking about enhancing the auto-protect mode)

I see

1:17 PM
> Please note that 2 of my players are Evil
I'm not sure what to say to this but the temptation to leave a witty comment is so strong

I'm biting my tongue on that one too.

Oh, @JonathanHobbs, mind taking a look at my most recent bit in the Spoil-Lair?

@JonathanHobbs Is it about them being evil people, instead of playing evil characters?

 BESW's Spoil-Lair

CAUTION: High chance of plot. Not for BESW's players.

@Zachiel bingo XD

Stop doing your asides during game time seems like good advice there.

And see if you can find a cleric of at least 9th level to cast atonement on your players.

Or don't keep secrets from the other players, it's okay that players know what is going on - the characters are the ones who don't. Everyone has the same right to enjoy the story. I know things were hot and heavy yesterday (I was one of those in anger) but have things cooled down a bit for everyone else as well>?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Say hi to @ThalesPereira, the poor focal point of a storm which really had little to do with his answer.

@JoshuaAslanSmith I avoided chat yesterday. Seems like things cooled off today.

Aaron wise-ish since you had no investment in the issue

@JoshuaAslanSmith Yea I had no idea what was going on. And I wasn't getting in the middle of that to find out what was going on.
