4:00 PM
@Trajan I meant the Batman wizard

Don't make me get out the Batman Facts.

@BESW [ask innocently] Batman has Facts ?

@Trajan I collect Batman Facts. They're like Chuck Norris Facts, but they have to be citable from an established Batman source, like the comics or the DCAU.
For example:
> Batman has at least nine Batcaves. One is in Los Angeles. One is a submarine.

@JoshuaAslanSmith Interesting, but not what I collect.
> Batman defeated Lex Luthor with a glass of water.

4:03 PM
@BESW I guess you heard of the time where Batman recorded a videotape where he guessed the moment when Green Arrow would rant ?

@Trajan He does that just about every time he's recorded a tape for someone else to watch.

Gotta love the god damn Batman.

> Someone made an army of Batman clones, but they all killed themselves because being Batman is too intense an experience to endure.

@BESW no way, it's the real expressed reason ?

Yes.
The guy made a bunch of Batman clones, then downloaded a copy of Batman's memories into each of them.
It went poorly.
> Batman always switches drinks. Always.

4:06 PM
@besw you wanna throw out a link?

@JoshuaAslanSmith This is my own hobby; it's just a .txt file on my desktop.
> Batman is so prepared, he died just so he'd know what it's like.

heh, this is awesome
but I gotta go
later all

> Batman is so prepared, he has a backup personality.

> Batman stabbed a cassowary with a poisoned hummingbird.

4:08 PM
The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is a fictional character in the DC Comics universe. The character first appeared in Batman #113 (February 1958), in a story titled Batman - The Superman of Planet-X by writer France Herron and artist Dick Sprang. In this story, the character is an alien named Tlano from the planet Zur-En-Arrh. In 2008, writer Grant Morrison resurrected the concept, this time as a backup personality of Bruce Wayne's. The persona was stored in Bruce's subconscious in case his mind was overwhelmed by psychological trauma. It surfaced in Batman #678, shortly before Wayne's apparent...

@JoshuaAslanSmith Exactly.
> Batman punished a criminal by trapping him forever in a time loop of his wife calling him an idiot.
> Batman told a Spartan that the Batcave Is. Not. Sparta.
(I swear, it happened. Right there on the page and everything.)

@besw of my fave batman beyond episodes

> Batman shot a god with a used time-traveling bullet.

though it cant top this:

I prefer this

4:14 PM
I loved the backup personality. So Batman.

You get the idea: Batman Facts.
@Trajan I love that he felt he had to die before he could become Batman.
M'rr. Moment.

Will you pass this file onto you kids when you die ? I'd appreciate a copy of it.
I don't know the story where he died (I guess you're not talking about batman rip)

@Trajan I'd have to go digging to track it down.
But if I'm remembering it correctly, this is before he returned to Gotham to become Batman.
Like, the final part of his training: die.

I've been told he turned down a power ring once because it'd slow him down

4:21 PM

Most of the power ring stuff is out of continuity.
As I recall, that particular instance was more a case of "I don't have time to get used to this, so I'll stick to the tools I know."

Too bad. I've read an elseword where instead of a bat, it was an abin Sur hologram that appeared when he faced his late father statue

I like Ushanka!Bat, if we're talking about Elseworlds.

You focus your batman facts on in-continuity stories ?

I'm not picky.
I do focus on "official" sources, though.
Determining continuity is... difficult, at best.

4:26 PM
I'm amused that about half of your facts are derived from Morrison's run.

@Magician About half of them are DCAU.
But I do know a lot of DCAU finds its material in the DCU.
Hrm. I'm having trouble tracking down the "learned what it's like to die" comic.

4:53 PM
To be fair @besw , batman the brave and the bold is as far from canon as you can get

5:17 PM
@BESW Red Son's one of my favorite comics, though it's not (for once) due to Batman
Is it too much opened to discussion if I ask what are pros and cons of xDy and 1Dz ? gaussian over uniform (?) distribution ?

huh, that's a good question... I'm guessing there's a few fairly objective pros and cons there, given it's mostly a math question

Expected answers would be like "this system is good at this, and the other system is good at that"

I'm pretty sure the heart of it is bonuses matter exponentially more in gaussian systems than they do in a system with a uniform distribution

So it may be kinda subjective.

But it's a good subjective, I think
But Gaussian systems also tend heavily towards the middle, so if you want exceptional failure/success to be rare, you should go Gaussian

5:25 PM
@shatterspike1 Yes, this is the only thing I can think of, for now. Plus the matter is adressed here

Ah, so there it is

but this question primarily discuss the effect of switching from one to another on probability.
I'm more interested by the effect it has on the game, such as, as you said, exceptional failure/sucess being more rare
why shadowrun use D6s, why wfrp use D100

Dice pools are kind of odd

is it only a (random ?) system choice, or is it intentionaly enforcing a playstyle ?
@shatterspike1 Yeah, that's what the starting point of an argument with a friend of mine

I don't (usually) think they're chosen for any particular reason, but changing the die roll from uniform to gaussian (or vice versa) tends to screw things up a lot.

5:31 PM
I told him gaussian make more sense (to me), but I'm wondering what are pros and cons of each.
@shatterspike1 Sure does.

I avoid gaussian like the plague for one simple reason: The math is much more complex when calculating bonuses.
In a flat distribution, you can go "Oh, that's a +1 to the d20 roll, so that's +5% chance of success."

@shatterspike1 At least it's not "4d6 take 3"
THIS is messed up probabilities.

Yeah, that's much worse.
I shouldn't need a statistics class to understand the probabilities of a die roll, is my thinking.

@shatterspike1 you shouldn't have to worry about the probabilities of a die roll, is mine

I think a uniform distribution is generally fine, especially if you have no auto-win or auto-fail result.
But it does tend towards finer grained systems.
I'm also thinking of something like the ORE, where two dice is a 10% chance of success, but four dice is 50%

5:36 PM
@KRyan I strongly disagree. On that note, I've made concessions on previous answers as per your semantic recommendations. This one really comes across as nitpicky though. I note no mechanical disadvantage to "wounds" in my answer; your extrapolation is your own. I also cite here, as reference, the D&D 3.5 character sheet.

But the designers give you the curve in the book, so that's a little less nightmarish.

ok, so, besides the two "obvious" and already stated answers (being "bonus matter more" and "less exceptionnal failure/success"), there's nothing to expect from this question ?
@shatterspike1 you lost me
brb

I think it's also "Gaussian systems are harder to value in terms how much a bonus is worth, since every modifier skews the distribution, which makes it a bit hard to homebrew or design for"
@Trajan I was referring to the One-Roll-Engine, which uses a pool of d10's and looks for d10's that match. The probability curve on that one is really weird.
@LitheOhm Oh it's a semantic point on an answer where the word wound has very little meaning, if any. I'm not sure why that word choice is worth a downvote when the answer is correct.
I mean, the semantics of the word "wound" could be argued in a different context about hit points being entirely unrelated to the shock/pain/blood loss of getting hit with a sword or whatever, but as a criticism of this specific answer, it's pedantic.

5:51 PM
@shatterspike1 so it seems.
@shatterspike1 I disagree. A +1 bonus to the result is worth a +3 dice in the pool (with D6s).
and it's very valuable with Fate dice, since the average of a fate dice roll is 0.

Ok, if a +1 bonus is worth a +3 in a dice pool, how much is a +2 bonus worth?

+6 dice
averaging, of course.

Er, no, wait
I meant gaussian distribution
not dice pool

in shadowrun, a die has 33% chance to be a success

two dice have a 5/9 chance of success, three have 21/27, etc.
asymptotically, this approaches 100%. Each extra die is worth less than the die before it.

6:04 PM
@shatterspike1 what is "success" here ?

What shadowrun 4E calls a "hit", the chance of rolling a 5 or a 6 on a die.
We're looking for one or more hits on in the dice pool.

so yes, bonus dice get increasingly unneeded
but a +1 bonus to the result is an automatic success for this roll.

For a roll that requires only one "hit", yes. On a roll that requires more than one, things get a bit weird.

Note that there never is bonus to the result, in SR, though.
@shatterspike1 Yes. Gaussian is more complex than continuous/uniform

Yeah, because the makes the math wacky to combine the two.

6:08 PM
But Fate does that.
Adding bonus to the result, not combining.

Ah, I see where you're going now. Sorry, my brain is acting awfully weird.
Hmm. It isn't the bonus, it's the target number, I realize.

@shatterspike1 np, I'm probably quite unclear, I have to deal with speaking in a foreign language on top of abstract (and long-forgotten) mathematics

I guess what I'm trying to say is that as you add bonuses to a Gaussian roll, the percentage chance of hitting a certain number doesn't increase uniformly.
@Trajan No, you're being perfectly clear. I'm just having a weird parallel talk.

@shatterspike1 Yes, I see where the misunderstanding came from. You're right.
Have to go, thanks for the talk. I think there's no need for this question to be asked

Dice pools with dice only bonuses are fairly sane relatively.
@Trajan Thanks for listening

6:32 PM
hello everyone

Hello

Hello!
Also, hello everyone.

Hello Alex P

What did I miss?
... Hrrm, I missed magic corgis?

Apparently. Although I'm not sure Jake is a Corgi.
He's a magic... nuke dog.

6:43 PM
@shatterspike1 Like Dogmeat?
Dogmeat the dog is a non-player character (NPC) dog in the Fallout series of post-apocalyptic themed role-playing video games. Dogmeat was introduced as an optional companion to the player character in the original Fallout (1997), and has also made cameo appearances in the sequel Fallout 2 (1998) and in some other video games. Another, different Dogmeat dog is featured in the same role in Fallout 3 (2008). In both incarnations of the character, Dogmeat was well received, becoming widely regarded as one the best remembered features in the series, as well as one of the most popular sidekic...

@AlexP I wouldn't call dogmeat magical. He always dies in those damn forcefields. RIP dogmeat.

I hazard to say he's the best sidekick because he doesn't feel obtrusive.
You can still feel like a lone wanderer if you have a pet.
Whereas my reaction to the other NPCs in, like, Fallout 3 was always "Man, now I'm in this weird, like, Odd Couple thing"

6:57 PM
Ah, Fallout 3. Yeah, I'd agree there.
I liked Fawkes for the Broken Steel DLC, but only for the ending
I was talking about the Dogmeat in fallout 1, though. He had a nasty tendency to run into electrified forcefields and melt.

@shatterspike1 The melee guy in the world of traps? :D

Fawkes? He got a laser-chain gun
Not saying I would stick with him after the ending, though.

Is Dogmeat that random companion you sometimes meet out in the wild?

7:12 PM
@shatterspike1 Aye. I did consider how much an edit would really affect the entire question. Ultimately, though -- any given answer I post could be taken out of any context, and such an edit is necessary on such a small and unlikely technicality
Until I played V:tM, it didn't occur to me that "wounds" would do more than simply bring one closer to their demise.
Other than that it was all disabled, unconscious and dead.

I think it's a minor thing that doesn't effect the accuracy of the answer any.
I mean, I would debate that hit points represent wounds since hit points are a very weird mechanic to begin with, but it doesn't detract from the answer any.

@LitheOhm The character sheet has no rules weight whatsoever, and a mistake by the character sheet designer does not have to be replicated by you. Without the rule that @Tridus quotes, you would be wrong. Your reasoning is unsound and inaccurate, and worse misleading to those who are unfamiliar with the system. I am not trying to be nitpicky, I am trying to improve your answer and improve the understanding of the game for those who read it.

dogs in general tend to die super easy in fallout simply because of explosives and other traps

@KRyan It's a fluff debate over a crunch answer. Wound doesn't have a mechanical meaning in 3.5

it is important in rules questions not just to supply the correct conclusion, but the reason why that is so, and that means citing ruels
@shatterspike1 false. He is claiming that your HP goes down because you have "wounds" equal to some number that stays constant when your max HP goes down. That is not accurate.
Constitution damage does HP damage equal to the amount of lost max HP
that is why your HP goes down
this results in the same value, but it is because of that rule, not because of "wounds" or because there's any rule that says the amount of damage you have taken remains the same when your max HP changes (there is no such rule)

7:20 PM
In what situation would the distinction matter?

@shatterspike1 That's irrelevant; his answer indicates and implies rules that do not exist and the only effect that can possibly have is to send those unfamiliar with the rules on a wild goose chase, hunting for those rules that do not exist
that makes it a bad answer: it misleads those who read it and do not already know the answer
the goal of an answer is to be completely accurate, not coincidentally accurate despite flawed reasoning

Whatever, man. This is another of those things where I presume we're just not going to see eye-to-eye.

I see no reason why this is an argument, to be honest; what gain is there to be had by keeping the answer as it is? The exact, precise, and accurate reason why things are the way they are is literally quoted immediately under the answer
it should be incorporated into the answer
and the inaccurate and misleading aspects of the answer should be removed

If a character’s Constitution score changes enough to alter his or her Constitution modifier, the character’s hit points also increase or decrease accordingly.

Tridus' comment?

7:24 PM
because they can only cause problems and add nothing of value to the answer

Is what the actual rules text says; it isn't called damage.

@shatterspike1 I'm not sure what distinction you're getting at here

@shatterspike1 but isn't 3.5 notorious for being loose with terms?

I'm just saying, you say it's damage, the rules say it isn't.
In either case, the result is the same except for weird edge cases based on damage triggers
I would agree with you that the proper rules text be cited in this case
But that doesn't change the fact that the answer is correct rule text or no rules text.

@shatterspike1 if I said "damage" and the rules don't, then I misspoke; the only position I am actively attempting to advocate is that the answer should include the rules citation, and should not include misleading interpretation not backed up by rules. It is currently doing the opposite of this.

7:28 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith Among other things.

@shatterspike1 It's conclusion is correct but its reasoning for that conclusion is inaccurate; in total that's not a correct answer
it is incorrect to claim the answer is, in its entirety, correct, because it is not

@KRyan If it bugs you, go ahead and edit it to include the relevant text.

If I say 2+2=5 and 5+10=14, thus 2+2+10=14, the fact that 2+2+10 does equal 14 does not mean my entire statement is correct
@shatterspike1 LitheOhm has already indicated his resistance to that happening, so I'm not going to strongarm him like that
I'm trying to convince him, though apparently not well

Actually, he already included the rules citation in an edit to his answer.
Four hours ago.

@shatterspike1 well that's what I get for responding to @ chat messages dropped on me from other SE sites without checking the answer
but he also insists on maintaining his inaccurate statement about wounds in the answer
and that's only going to mislead readers
and I will therefore continue to downvote it
and I think everyone else should, too, because the answer is wrong

7:31 PM
@kryan which answer

10
A: D&D 3.5e HP Damage and Constitution Damage

LitheOhmWith the +1 modifier, you've got +5 HP for being fifth level. Your wounds are -5, from your max. Taking con damage to reduce your maximum leaves you with 15/20, because your current wounds are subtracted from your maximum. Similarly, your constitution raising increases your maximum but doesn't g...

If the statement were something along the lines of "you can think of this as your wounds remaining constant" or something, where he made it clear that it wasn't a matter of the rules but a fluff justification for the rules, that would be probably ideal
as-is I think it is misleading

@KRyan He has the actual rules text cited and the rules effect is exactly the same with either interpretation, so I'm not really seeing the problem.

@shatterspike1 because he implies rules that do not exist
what advantage does that have? what can that statement possibly do besides make someone think there are rules that back up those statements when there are not?
answering a rules question with stuff you made up is wrong, unless you're very careful to qualify it as what it is

@BrianBallsun-Stanton Sorry, I didnt get my email so I didnt know it had dropped. thanks for the comment.

I mean, see the response to this answer:
-2
A: Is it possible to dual wield 2-handed weapons in Black Crusade?

Jim BarrowsThe answer would be no. It's not just a matter of weight, it's a matter of balance, control and leverage. In terms of balance, a two-handed weapon isn't balanced right for single handed use, the longer handle provides leverage, and control. In terms of control, a swords balance point lends i...

he answered based on real-world fighting techniques and possibilities, and got downvoted because at no point did he base that in the rules
for all I know, he might be right that the answer is "no"
no one else has posted an answer

7:37 PM
He gave the incorrect conclusion. They aren't really equivalent.

@shatterspike1 do you know that? you should answer the question if so
his answer would get downvoted even if no was the correct answer
and should be

Also, the effect isn't exactly the same rules or no rules
He's incorrect for several reasons, least of which is there ain't no 15 pound swords that exist.

@shatterspike1 it might be. his conclusion is only "no, it's not possible." Which very well could be the case for that game
and if it's not, I'm sure I can find games where it is
my point is, reasoning counts
it's not sufficient to be accurate, it's important to be accurate for the right reasons
otherwise the answer is inaccurate and misleading, and may be a source of confusion for readers

Except in this case, it's like using an alternate theorem to prove something as opposed to a theorem which states the exact same thing in different terms. The reasoning provides the correct conclusion either way in every case, even if the exact process is different.

I'm a fan of metaphors, personally.
Plenty of rules answers are answered with experience
Just because I didn't have the RAW reference off-hand doesn't mean I didn't have the correct understanding

7:46 PM
@shatterspike1 his reasoning could be exactly the same, and therefore lead to the conclusion that he has, and he would be wrong if not for the rule that @Tridus gives.

No, I'm pretty sure con damage works exactly like I explained
RAW citation or not

@LitheOhm metaphors should increase, not decrease, understanding. Yours is failing on that score. You should make it clear that it's a metaphor for helping explain or justify the rule, elsewise it is misleading

For anyone that cares, final playtest packet for D&D Next has dropped today

I find my answer more pleasing than the other more complicated and technical one. It seems the asker does as well, along with nine other people.

@LitheOhm you are wrong. the rule @Tridus quotes is the only reason things behave like they do. There is no rule that says your total damage taken is supposed to remain constant when max HP changes

7:48 PM
Then answer yourself.
If it's decent, I'll upvote it.
It's the way I've been playing the game. If it's wrong, then damn it's still been a good and balanced call.

@LitheOhm the other answer is simply incorrect, which is why it has a poor score. It's kind of weird it doesn't have a worse one.
@LitheOhm again, all I am suggesting is that you clearly demarcate which is rule and which is yours

Then I'd like to view your take on con damage and remaining HP totals. Since you don't agree with my logic, show me yours

@LitheOhm The rule says your current HP goes down by the amount that your max HP goes down when you take Constitution damage.
that's it
that's the only reason things behave that way

I've done that before on answers where you have shown me a reasonable person would conclude something incorrect from my wording. At least a couple of times.
This one? I believe it's a pretty far extrapolation
even primed with your view of it, re-reading it I fail to draw that conclusion
So, the cup is still half full then? I just don't see the diversion. As I read this, it's a statement of "your answer doesn't conform to my standards, fix it" instead of "my answer would be different than yours, so here it is"
Rules questions can be answered on the basis of experience. My answer is stronger because someone dropped by with the RAW reference, but it doesn't devalue the rest
It's how I play the game.
So far, there's only been one complaint

He answered it

7:52 PM
going

@LitheOhm which you are expected to indicate
@LitheOhm perhaps because others not as familiar with the game didn't realize that your answer was incorrect and have thus been misled already
also, my comment's been upvoted, so that would imply at least one other who agrees with me.

@KRyan Completely off topic, why is your chat avatar different than your Q&A avatar?

@LitheOhm ok, here's an example of a possible distinction. If an effect changed your max HP without mentioning Constitution or your current HP, it would, by the rules, not change your current HP. The only reason Constitution changes do is because of the rule @Tridus pointed out. Under your reasoning, however, the "wounds" notion would imply that your current HP should also change with the max HP, which would be wrong.
I don't know if such an effect exists, but that's irrelevant

Perhaps. Or perhaps because none of them came to the conclusion that you did. Not that I'm calling you wrong, just that the conclusion drawn from my wording is a very uncommon one.

your reasoning has implications that are not true
and moreover indicates that "wounds" are some kind of key word with particular mechanical meaning, which is also false

7:56 PM
What kind of effect? I'd like to follow your example.

@LitheOhm a spell, perhaps; it doesn't really matter

I don't discount the character sheet as having no rules weight, however
it does really matter.
What spell?

@LitheOhm I don't know of one off-hand, but it does not matter

Temporary hit points from false life? But that explicitly affects your HP too

the spell doesn't even have to exist

7:57 PM
it does matter.

@LitheOhm yes, they separately and explicitly reference HP
@LitheOhm Wizards of the Coast says you're wrong to give it rules weight

Because any excess go above and over

@KRyan Why doesn't it have to exist?

Man, am I glad WotC isn't at my game table to micromanage my badwrongfun

@LitheOhm temporary hit points are different from both HP and max HP

7:58 PM
That's the only example I could come up with for your hypothetical

@LitheOhm it also doesn't matter how you play the game; the person did not ask how you play the game. The person asked what the rule was.

No, they asked what happens if..
