1:00 PM
Hm, there's http in the link

@Kethryweryn Space between ] and ( shouldn't be there...

I just added it to try :p

Cat
Can anyone tell me how appropriate or inappropriate Skyrim is for a young teen.
?

@Cat No idea, sorry.

no idea

Cat
1:01 PM
Violence isn't as much a concern as misogyny, other distrurbing themes..
OK, just thought I'd check
I'll do some googling

Ask Arqade?

never played it, but I don't indorse murdering dragons XD

Cat
lol

XD Of course Trogdor wouldn't...
How "young" is young teen, though?

@trogdor Murdering dragons is certainly an outdoor activity.

1:02 PM
I'd be less concerned about the maturity of the topics at hand so much as the complexity of the game.
(Speaking of neat games, I got a few awesome board games over the holiday)

Cat
Which ones were your favorites, Loki?

@BESW whether it is outdoor or not isn't my concern

We got the super-expensive "A Study in Emerald," which was totally worth the price. Also got "Shadows Over Camelot," which we haven't played yet. And "Rampage," which is a board game based on the old arcade game where monsters beat the crap out of buildings.

Cat
I've heard of Shadows before, but not Emerald

A Study in Emerald is a game based on the Neil Gaiman story of Sherlock Holmes in the Chthulhu mythos.

1:04 PM
@ProfessorLokiCaprion Suddenly I'm nostalgic for the old DOS game where the gorilla threw explosive bananas at buildings.

@BESW This sounds vaguely familiar, to me!

ah Rampage
I remember that
fun game

@BESW The pun was nice. (Someone had to say it. :D)

In Rampage, you actgually pick up your monster token (they're somewhat large and made of wood) and you drop them onto actual 3-d buildings built up from the game board.

ugh, you are all dragon racists, I see how it is
:P

1:06 PM
To move, you flick your monster token and sometimes they'll crash into each other or knock over buildings... it's great fun, but you have to watch where the pieces fly.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion A quick Google later...

Good mornin

Curses! Can't see YouTube at work. (Yes, I'm sadly at work, today).

Cat
Morning!

But I'd highly recommend A Study in Emerald to anybody who can afford it!

Cat
1:07 PM
I'll put it on my wish list

@ProfessorLokiCaprion Thank the deity you want for not beeing able to watch this video.
The SAN loss is immediate.

@Kethryweryn I'll thank Xipe Totec, this time.

It was a lovely game. Came with full BASIC sourcecode with DOS 6
Or maybe earlier DOS versions too.

OH! That was the game a bit like Scorched Earth, yes?
I loved Scorched Earth.

1:08 PM
Exactly.
Yeah, Scorched Earth was fantastic.

@Kethryweryn At any rate, I only know of Psi*Run by vague hearsay.

@lisardggY And then along came Worms.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion The natural evolution of the genre. A bit less tactical, a lot more cute, and they can MOVE.

@lisardggY And you can give them little squeaky Sean Connery voices!

[blink] Games naturally evolve toward cute? ...this explains so much about the Wii.

1:12 PM
You know what I miss in software? Boss keys. Every browser needs one of those.
Or at least I do.

Heh.
Most OSes have similar functionality built in these days, though.
With a mouse gesture or a key command I can switch screens, or even desktops, instantly.

Tried it out two days ago. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a story-driven short rpg. You're suffering from amnesia, were in a crash, you just escaped and you know something is chasing you. And you've got a psychic power.
Every player chooses a power, a short description, and writes down several questions about his/her character (like "Why do I have this strange tatoo on my wrist ?"). When you roll dice, you choose where you put each of them on a resolution table. Like : you could fail and be hurt but it triggers a memory and the chasers don't come closer. Or you could choose to succede and
4

Shiny.

The memory part is interesting : depending of how good the die was, you can choose to answer one question yourself on a 6, but the other players decide for you on 4-5. It leads to very interesting stories.

How few players do you think it can handle without warping too much?

1:20 PM
and on 3 and lower no memory shows up

@trogdor Yup.

seems made for at least 2 or 3

We played it with 2 players and a game master. They say 3-5 players in the rules.

My rule of thumb is that an RPG can usually be played with (1/2)X + 1 players, where X is the minimum number of players recommended by the manual, and the sum is rounded down to the nearest whole number.

so 2

1:23 PM
With two people (GM + player), it probably wouldn't work. Well, it would, but wouldn't be very interesting. Three people (with 2 players) was fun.

Yeah, X does not include GM.

@BESW That kick starter on the star bar looks wonderfully cheesy

@Aaron I know, right?
I'm not a big fan of 80s nostalgia for its own sake, but Kung Fury looks like it has substance of its own.

1:46 PM
Because I need to say this somewhere: A Time Lord has twelve regenerations. Twelve. They usually get thirteen bodies, because they're counting the one they started with. A new regeneration cycle would most likely provide another twelve regenerations, not thirteen.

@BESW Well, yes, that's how I'm reading it, too; who's said otherwise?

And I quote: "The new Regeneration cycle of thirteen additional incarnations justifies an older Doctor again."

Hmm... they could mean 13 incarnations means 12 regenerations; 13 bodies, like you said.

But he doesn't get another thirteen bodies, because he's not starting with a freebie like he did the first time.

OH! I see!
I mean, let's face it, though... if Doctor Who runs long enough for that to be come an issue again, they'll just find another way around it.

1:50 PM
Oh, sure.
Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Moffat turns around and says "Oh, did you think a whole new regeneration cycle meant twelve more? Nope, just one life-cycle, now I get to rescue the franchise again!"

Haha...
Do you think he really doesn't know how to fly the TARDIS, though? Did he maybe get a "hard reset?"

Psh.

Hrm, I'd suppose not, though, since he was there when all the Doctors saved Gallifrey.

Temporary amnesia or confusion is typical for regeneration under stress.

He was too worried about the colour of his kidneys.

1:53 PM
Three turned mute, Eleven ran into a tree, Five went into a coma, Six went paranoid and tried to choke a companion to death.

Six was generally unpleasant all around, though.
I so wish I could have seen how 9 (Eccleston) handled his.
(And 10 was in a bit of a coma, too)

Eight had some pretty heavy-duty amnesia which lasted surprisingly long. But then, he actually died so we can cut him some slack.
@ProfessorLokiCaprion I feel like Ten's coma was a cheap knockoff of Five's.
"Oh, Davison had to spend two episodes in a Time Lord clean room! What a wuss. I just needed some tea."
It undermined the gravitas of Castrovalva's regeneration plot. And let's face it: when one of the main characters spends a whole story stuck like this‌, it's a pretty low blow to rob the story of what little dignity it had.

Oh good lord

(Although I have to give them props for sprucing up the tired old "it was all a dream!" trope with Matrix-shaped doily.)

> "If you don't want to play one of D&D's stereotipical nine alignments, you should not play D&D. If you feel like you need to spoil a class of its original fluff, why are you playing D&D?"

2:02 PM
@Zachiel Back away from the thread slowly, and keep your hands away from the keyboard.

Not a thread. Skype conversation. This friend of mine is bitching about a "I'm evil but not so much, in fact I'm more often good than not" character she doesn't like.

Then I suggest a steady regemine of "smile and nod."

Also, "why should a really really beautiful drow be interested in a passable but not that handsome barbarian with no charisma? The DM shouldn't allow that"

If he has no Charisma, he's either comatose or non-sentient, either of which presents more pressing problems than whether or not he's comely.
(But in all seriousness, if this person doesn't think a pretty person could possibly be attracted to an unpretty person, that says some rather telling things about their own personality.)
3
(Not that Charisma is just about being pretty, but it seems like that's where they're going with it.)

Tip for a blissful christmas diner : "What do you think : Oxford coma, yes or no ?" :D

2:09 PM
@BESW no charisma bonus, sorry
or no charisma meaning the non-keyword word

@Shiester Hi!

So last night I went to a small party, right, and there was this qt 3.14 nat 20 cha check babe there right
i went to go get her charisma number for sure and turns out she was a 3
i damn near vomited.

@Shiester Ha!!!

@BESW Oh, no. He has a 13 in appearance and maybe a 10 in charisma. We have appearance in that game because the master decided he was bored with every character being the most impossibly beautiful you could describe, so we need to pay points if we want it to be beautiful/handsome.

@Shiester [applause]
@Zachiel Yeeeah. I'm gonna call "unimaginative and media-saturated" on the idea that a pretty person can't fall for someone with an average ability to get along with others.

2:14 PM
@BESW well why is it not happening to me then?

So I got this guy that wants to play with us on Roll20 for D&D night but the only problem is he hasn't had his weatherford yet. (That is, where I come from a weatherford is a rite of passage involving taking an AP English course where she gives you maybe a D+ if she's in a good mood. I don't think she's ever given anyone an A on anything.)

maybe I'm under average

How do I encourage a player to take more time to actually proofread and edit his posts before submitting them (to boost overall quality?)

Hmm.

You tell them it's expected

2:16 PM
Do you think it's just a matter of taking the time to be more careful, or does he need some accompaniment to polish the skills before any amount of time will let him bring them up to your standards?

@BESW It might be a mix of both. The player in question seems to reply rather quickly, but also tends to ask "You guys still there?" after a minute of silence. (Usually I'm still writing.)
@Zachiel I could, but I don't want to be super blunt about it.

First off, get a typing indicator if you don't have one.

I think Roll20 has one

It's built in I think.

If you can see when each other is typing, the need to prioritize speed over quality becomes less urgent.
Make sure everyone knows where it is, then.

2:19 PM
IIRC it takes the form of a ... animation right in the chat.

Disparate typing speeds have been a major blockage in almost every chat-based RPG I've ever been in.
If you've got speed typers, ask them to remember not everyone's skills lie in that area and they should try to avoid saturating the dialogue.

Yeah, "oh come on you don't need to write a romance, I want to go on with the story" is pretty frequent

@BESW We're all relatively fast - posts don't have too much space inbetween unless its figuring up lots of dice-rolls, but we usually have all the possible rolls pre-written (as like [[d20+15+x]] ) in advance for copy pasting.
@Zachiel I believe it says "-yournamehere- is typing..."

Roll20 allows for macros for rolls

@Zachiel The only problem I have with the macro roller is that it's more of an issue to quickly make an edit to it if need be.
I really wish roll20's deck builder for cards was better too.

2:22 PM
I'm generally allergic to attempts at subtly encouraging someone to change their behavior through social engineering, rather than having an open conversation.

I think really though the thing that bugs me is that this player in question is very active and will type fast and dirty, but overall he's relatively quiet in terms of interaction with other PCs and whatnot.

It has gained sentience! Fear for your computers!

Like last night for example he and a dwarf were in an inn drinking and just hanging out, wh-

Social engineering has its place, but open conversation about needs and expectations makes people feel like they're participants rather than trained animals.

@Aaron My. GOD.
@BESW Alright. I'll sit down and have a talk then.

2:24 PM
@Shiester I KNOW! I didn't know that many toolbars even existed.

Thanks, all.
Anyway anyone here want to go on a magical and fantastic voyage?

@Aaron Ia! Ia! Toolbar fhtagn!
@Shiester That sounds either marvelous or fatal, but it's 12:30am and I can't stay up long enough to find out which.

You all are now in Western World. It's time for a shootout. Type BANG to shoot.
tfw no pardners.
how do I roll the d20 in this chat?

@JohnCraven Hahaha.

I recall an irc dicebot script the author had built on top of math functions. As such it recognized attempts to roll 1dPi

I'm not sure why I would ever need a random number generator that produces a result between 1 and 1 but DAMMIT NOW I WANT IT

I can do that for you!
>1

5:08 PM
> Why do you need 1-sided dice?
Imagine this all too common scenario faced every day by D&D DMs around the world: your group is in a dungeon crawl. There’s a room with a pie in it, and the pie is guarded by an orc. If the characters open the door, one of these things happen:

1. The orc attacks

That’s it, there’s only the one option. So the characters do indeed open the door and the poor DM consults the chart. Unfortunately the smallest die type he has is a d4, so our DM has no choice but to roll the d4 over and over until he gets a 1 before he knows what the orc is going to do.
An I mean... "zero deviation from perfect randomness". Wow.

5:34 PM
I always make my players weigh their dice because if there is a 1% greater chance they roll a 3 than a 4 then that really messes up the game in my book

Factory sealed casino dice only, clearly.

Yeah @MadMAxJr this is basically why I can't play DnD, at least until d20 craps is installed at all major casinos
2d20

WOO HOO THAT'S AN AUTOMATIC d20 WIN SUCKAS
No, wait. Dammit, that would be an automatic win in d10 craps. An automatic win in d20 craps is 21

@BESW I disagree; Many questions get closed because they aren't useful to enough people.

6:31 PM
@Zachiel would it be possible to physically make a 1 sided die?

It would need to be a single plane. A cylinder with smooth tapered ends.
Or a Mobius strip. Good luck rolling that.

6:57 PM
I have a character with 4 arms. In three of those he will be wielding pistols. At 1st level can I make three attacks? (I know there are penalties I just need to know if I am right about 3 attacks.)

What system is this?

pathfinder

7:13 PM
Using more than two arms may require a multi-attack feat.. Not sure.
multi-attack is for natural attacks.. hmm.
Ah, here it is. Different feat.

7:28 PM
Ok so I can make three attacks then.
Thanks

7:42 PM
There's some significant penalties to attack, but it is possible.
One primary and then two off-hand attacks.

@MadMAxJr Well at level 2 I get a + 10 to hit and I hit touch AC

8:15 PM
@Aaron I linked to the whole article right above that text

Cool.
I'm going to be running Aeon Wave with @trogdor soon--maybe tonight.

11:31 PM
@BESW not following
@BESW cool!

@C.Ross Yeeeah. It's a 1991 Mathnet storyline about a baseball player who gets replaced by an android, but one of the main characters keeps mishearing it as adenoid.
It's been on my mind since I got an Android-based tablet a couple weeks ago.
Speaking of TV shows, have you had any progress on the Grimm mod?

@BESW Mathnet! I used to love that ...
@BESW no, no interest running it locally it + new job has taken it off the burner

Fair enough.

Enjoying the new season though

Yes! They keep getting better.
I love that Juliet is now a main cast member.

11:57 PM
I love that the plot actually progresses and the characters develop
Juliet is great, having so many well developed characters is great
