1:15 PM
@Rob Or just droppings.

Rob
ewwwwww
heh

Free. And distracting.

Rob
XP loss was nerfed out of PF, far as I know

@Rob And more special feature replacements as well, right?

Rob
@SimonGill You mean familiars snuffing it?

1:25 PM
@Rob I mean that you can swap out the familiar class feature for a different one.

Rob
Oh righty; yeah, there's a few architypes available for that, but some of them (most of them) are truly dire

@Rob Fair enough.

Rob
Like getting a pants version of arcane bomb, using scrolls (destructively!) as melee weapons ..

@Rob That's a silly image. Come close so I can give you an arcane papercut!

Rob
Yep; don't know what they were smoking when they thought of that one.

1:36 PM
A scroll, possibly.
Heh, arcane magical writings as cigarette papers.

Rob
They obviously don't like scrolls
Haha
"Whoa, dude, this is like... magical smoke n' stuff."

Now I have a fantastic idea for a modern mage (N)PC.

Rob
Cheech and Chong: The Hogwarts years

It's apparently Harald and Kumar these days.

Rob
Never heard o' them myself

1:43 PM
Never watched them - only reason I know about them is that Kumar did a stint on House for a while, until he got his character killed so he could go campaign for Obama in 2008. Was all a bit strange.

Rob
Ah the wacky lives of celeb's
Ooops; code checkin fail; build, test, THEN check in - been on holiday too long

@Rob Do you have an "I broke the build" token?

@Rob you mean you don't copy code straight to production with no testing? amatuer

Rob
@SimonGill My last place we had a "muppet of the day" award. Thankfully not here ;)
@waxeagle Sadly not; it's so much quicker that way isn't it? ;)

@Rob yeah, until you break production, and then it's a headache for everyone (my coworker did that yesterday...). We have 2 seperate test environs, one that is completely development, the other is our production backup, but we keep the data more current there so we use it for testing when we need to work on current data...but every once in a while we lose our minds and accidentally copy something to prod that we shouldn't (don't we all)

1:50 PM
@Rob I'd do one here - but since it's just me I would never get rid of it!

Rob
@waxeagle Sounds a pretty secure set up other than the odd slip up then :)
@SimonGill What you need is the other award we had then; "Brains of the day" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brains_(Thunderbirds)

@Rob Excellent idea :)

@Rob yep. it works out pretty well.

Rob
Was hoping for a few more star system sheet answers...

I don't think there really are that many. Traveller and Star Wars are the big systems of star system definitions.

Vi
1:59 PM
Hmmm, well I've been asking my DM if I could swap the Spirit Fetch ritual in the Feywarden theme for something more useful (like, anything :P) but they won't have it. Is it possible in 4e to change the default level 5 ritual given by a theme?
Or a way for me to cast Phantom Horses like it's a class feature?
Without taking Wild Hunt.

@Vi I have to say I doubt it.
@Vi Why does it have to be a class feature?

Vi
@SimonGill Mostly because it seems like we are going to be doing a lot of travelling in the game and being able to call up horses who can fly at later levels and don't need to be fed would be
more or less nesessery.
I was thinking that since there are ways of casting rituals without expending reasoruces, this would save a lot of money in the long run

That sounds handy - but it does sound like something you can pick up as a cheap ritual. My question is more about why it has to be a class feature rather than just something you can use?

Vi
What I meant was that I would like my character to be able to cast it for free once per day as in the Wild Hunt theme

Rob
A wand o' summon (thingy)

Vi
2:09 PM
Sorry, class feature was a bad term
I was thinking about that, but I think it would still be fairly expensive since we need one each and if the last wand sunders we have to walk.
@Rob Could he get the same sort of effect with a ritulist feat?

Rob
@Vi No clue; I suspect this is 4e talk and I know very little about that generation!

Vi
@Rob That's a shame. I don't know what the wand would do, or if that would be possible, but I suspect we would have to summon the horses one at a time or in randomised groups instead of just suddenly having enough for everyone.

@Vi Is this a homebrew setting? And has the GM previously shown that he cares about things like travel time?

@SimonGill Nice point

Vi
@Rob The ritual is vague enough that I think you can summon any number of horses.
@Rob Unfortunately no, they are very hard-line in that respect

Rob
2:16 PM
@Vi That's a nice touch then

@Vi Was that supposed to be to me?

Vi
@SimonGill It may well have been, sorry

THat's alright.
Ok, so if it's a homebrew setting... are there warforged around? You might be able to wangle mechanical horses as a setting detail.
Or, more simply, a magic item each with a utility power of summoning a horse/whirlwind/cart/cloud that can travel at fast overland speeds.

Vi
@SimonGill I'm afraid it isn't homebrew and they are very tough on sticking to the source rules.
Unfortunatly :P

@Vi What setting is it then?

2:20 PM
second early morning outage in a row...stupid windows updates

Vi
@SimonGill Regular 4e D&D

@Vi Ah, Points of Light. Technically, that is homebrew, because you're supposed to come up with all the details.

Vi
@SimonGill Points of Light?

@Vi default 4e setting

Vi
I'm afraid that the only homebrew part is a couple of the races, and those, I think, are just reflavoured half-elves

2:22 PM
It's a description of the default setting - "There are no grand empires, just little points of light in the darkness."

harkenwold, fallcrest, winterhaven etc are all in POL

Vi
@SimonGill Ah, right, yes. It's Fareun
Or possibly Fallcrest

@Vi There's a BIG difference between the two :P
One is a town, the other is a continent!

Vi
@SimonGill Ah, damn

Faerun is the land of the Forgotten Realms.

Vi
2:24 PM
Well, I dunno, but I do know that they have said 'Any D&D source that's offical

Fallcrest is the town in the DMG.

@Vi yep, that's standard for POL

@Vi Fair enough. Maybe @BESW knows about magic travel items. There's got to be something out there.

@SimonGill what kind of travel do you want to do?
are we talking about a spelljammer?

@waxeagle Not me, it's Vi. He's looking for alternatives to the care and feeding of live horses.

Vi
2:25 PM
@waxeagle Basically I was just looking for a way to cast the Phantom Horses ritual for free once per day.

Rob
Find a local animal, enlarge it, ride it?

@Vi why are you tracking care/feeding in 4e at all?

Vi
@Rob GIANT SQUIRREL ATTACK! XD

@waxeagle Someday, I want to find a copy of the old spelljammer books.
@Vi Miniature Giant Space Hamsters! Go for the eyes Boo!
2

Vi
@waxeagle It's not that we are doing that too much, but the DM has said that we would have to treat them like real horses

Rob
2:27 PM
@Vi :D

Vi
And real horses can be probalmatic

@Vi ah, mounts in 4e are useless, abstract travel if at all possible

Rob
But tasty

Vi
@SimonGill Hahah!

Rob
Minsc and Boo, heroes in every sense of the word.

Vi
2:27 PM
@waxeagle Can we do that if we are tracking too?

Vi
@Rob Yeah, that was great stuff. X3

@Vi sure, skill challenge!
what level are we talking here out of curiousity?

@Rob Awesome.

Vi
@waxeagle First, at the moment, but I'm planning ahead

2:29 PM
@Vi gotcha

@Rob Have I mentioned he is a miniature giant space hamster? I'm sure I have.

Vi
@waxeagle Is there any way to do this with feats?

@Vi obsidian steeds, for all of you

Suddenly, steeds

Vi
@waxeagle How would we do that?

2:30 PM
In my opinion 4e travel = rituals and/or cutscenes, unless Trantor.

@Vi it's an item, L5 wonderous
@BESW amen and amen

Because.... Trantor.

@Vi Magic items for minor circumstances are better than using feat slots.

Rob
@Zachiel I think so; I know so. He is so! :)

Vi
The really good thing about Phantom horses is you can't loose them and if they get distroyed you resummon

2:31 PM
@BESW my compendium search turns up nothing :(

Vi
@SimonGill Could you suggest ones for low levels that aren't one-use?

@waxeagle I'm probably spelling it wrong.

Vi
I was thinking of maybe a feat that gives you something + a ritual

Tantron, sorry.
He'd be very easy to modify for lower or higher levels just by making his stats and attacks scale like a companion's.

@Vi Sorry. It's been a while since I've played 4E and we never cared about mode of travel. There should be something on DDI.

2:33 PM
Goals of the Figurine of Tantron
- Bear its owner in regal style across the world.
- Rampage and crush.
- Find others of its kind.

Vi
@BESW Unfortunately I don't have DDI, but I do have a pile of the books and my brother has more

@Vi I'm having trouble tracking the conversation thread. What are we trying to achieve?

Vi
@BESW Basically a fast travel system.

@Vi Dragon Magazine 368
At low levels?

Vi
@BESW Yeah, that was why I was thinking of the horses
@BESW They scale at later levels and you can eventually fly on them

2:36 PM
What horses?

Vi
@BESW The Phantom Horses Ritual

Phantom Steed?

Vi
@BESW Yeah, I was trying to think of a way to cast it for free or at a reduced cost
But without taking Wild Huntsman

Vistani Heritage?

Don't mess vith the Vistani!

2:39 PM
The Vistani bloodline feat tree has the Vistani Pathfinder feat.
Benefit: You can master and perform exploration and travel rituals as though you had the Ritual Caster feat. Once per day, you can ignore the component cost of an exploration or travel ritual you have mastered of your level or lower.

ritual caster and just locate and buy it?

Ah, here we go.

Vi
Woah, really

Travel Mastery
Prerequisite: Ritual Caster feat, mastery of two travel rituals
Benefit: Double the duration of any travel ritual you perform. A group that includes you treats its speed as 1 higher for determining its exploration speed. Once per day, you can ignore the component cost of a travel ritual of your level or lower that you have mastered.
Also, be a bard.

Vi
@BESW Hmmm, we do have a bard....

2:40 PM
Be a bard, take that feat, your travels are swift and easy.

Vi
@BESW I think I'll get our bard to learn that then

Bards have exclusive access to some pretty useful travel-type rituals.

Vi
Cool
@BESW He already has a speed-up ritual

Traveler's Chant, probably.

Vi
@BESW Yep
@BESW It's not exactly lightspeed. XD

2:43 PM
What level are you guys?

@Vi You should probably make this a full-blown question.

Vi
First at the moment

@SimonGill Wouldn't that turn into a List Question pretty fast?

@BESW It should be a short contained list.

Vi
Hmmm, I think I should probably ask about heritage feats at some point too....

2:46 PM
"What is the best way to travel quickly overland without using living mounts and not spending resources?"

Rob
"Run"

@SimonGill Necromancy.
[whistles innocently]

Undead mounts would be effective.
And thematic.

Rob
Wouldn't attract predators

Tie together enough goblin zombies...

Vi
2:49 PM
@SimonGill And smelly
XD

@Rob ooh we have that question

@Vi Skeletons are pretty clean.

Rob
@waxeagle ar?

@Vi That's why you either a) learn taxidermy or b) make them skeletal and bring extra-padded saddles.

Vi
@SimonGill Ah but if you crash you need to wire them back together X3

2:50 PM
23
Q: When would PCs choose to walk instead of ride?

JakobI'm putting together an adventure where the PCs are on a time limit. As such, travel times become quite important and I want to make sure that I've understood the different means of travel beforehand. In a fantasy setting, when would PCs traveling overland choose to walk instead of riding? I'm ...

@Vi If you didn't use magical sinew to make them, you deserve all the time it takes to rebuild them :P

Rob
@waxeagle Aha :)
Floating disc + Windsail
A small horde of unseen servants carrying you all

@Rob Great 3.5 option that one.

Rob
Str buff the BSF and get him to pull a cart

Vi
So I guess my best option is bardic travel feats then?

Rob
2:53 PM
@SimonGill I've been reading spells most of the day deciding what scrolls to buy :)

I'll have you know I am sorely tempted to make a GAPT wheel joke.
@Vi Not feats, rituals with a feat or two to back it up.

Vi
@BESW Ah, ok
Is there any way to make Spirit Fetch a less useless spell in a game with a DM who seems pretty keen to veto unusual uses of stuuf?

And bard because they get the Ritual Casting feat and access to some extra rituals. But anybody with the feat could make it work.
@Vi Probably not. It's designed to be a non-combat deal, isn't it?

Vi
Seems like a real waste of a level five theme bonus
@BESW Yeah, it's designed to be irritating. :P
AND it's a level two ritual you get at level five
That reads like a level one ritual :P
Eash

Oh, no! You get the free featless use of a very adaptable non-combat utility ritual. Clearly underpowered and useless.

Vi
2:58 PM
@BESW Well, apart from anoying people, I have no clue why I would want it when there are a huge pile of better communication rituals that cost roughly the same
@BESW I don't want to sound ungrateful, it might help at some point

a) Nobody's twisting your arm to take it. Whinging about a choice you make garners no sympathy.
b) Free and featless.

Vi
@BESW C) Useless
:P
Well I don't really want sympathy
I'm just kinda wondering if there is some way to make it useful

No, c) If you take the theme it's because you find its other features useful enough to compensate for the apparent lack at level 5.

Vi
@BESW I suppose.

I can see any number of uses for a 1/day free ability to give anyone I want a short message.
Sure there are other better methods, but don't succumb to the fallacy that having better options makes a particular option worse.

Vi
3:04 PM
@BESW Well there are a few, it's just that I see this as something that is going to be obsolete by the time I even get it.

Eating potatoes instead of souffle doesn't suddenly make potatoes poisonous.

Vi
@BESW I know, but it is a one way message with a land speed.
I can't see myself using it as an actual message at level five unless it can do something that the regular spells can't.

[shrug] I got nothin'. I recommend the theme on the strength of its granted power alone. Anything else is gravy.

Vi
Sorry, I'm being argumentative, I know :P

@Vi Sure it does: it is free and you can do it without the use of a feat slot or scroll.
If you're stripped and thrown into a dungeon with nothing but a loincloth and a hungry rat that'll fight you for your gruel, you can send for help. Or taunt your captor, your choice.

Vi
3:12 PM
@BESW I guess

You could always be a Janissary. Their level 5 feature is a skill bonus that only applies to a certain creature type.
Or be an Unseelie Agent! You learn a language nobody knows.
Theme features are not supposed to be overwhelming. Occasionally someone goofs and you get a really great one, but that's not the norm.

@Vi Exalted Sorcerers spend Willpower and a chunk of Essence on one-way messages with low speed. It's a vital communication feature (except on the battlefield, it's a court martial offence to use it for battlefield communication).

Vi
@SimonGill I suppose you have a point.

@Vi It's not perfect, but very little is.

Vi
Hmmm

Rob
3:23 PM
The more I look at the class; the more I'm thinking "balls to being a loremaster"

I made a loremaster once. I can't remember why.

Rob
That's not a shining endorsement :)

I think it was a level 60 lich NPC.

Vi
I just wish I could think of a usage that doesn't involve annoying people....
I mean, more than I'm doing now. :P

@Rob Heh, knowing everything is one perk.

3:24 PM
@Vi Reporting back to your employers? Calling for backup? Wishing your mother happy birthday?

Rob
@SimonGill Sell themselves as postal service

@Rob Yeah. That works too.

I'm aliiiiiiiive

Rob
@SimonGill Loremasters: Yeah; but it's not like I don't kick the rest of the partys ass already with lore skills with only 1 rank anyway

@Rob Time to argue for the Declaration rules :) Make a statement, make a Lore check to see if it's actually true or not.
@Lord_Gareth Indeed you are.

Rob
3:27 PM
@SimonGill Haha! Nice :)

@KRyan are you actually here?

Rob
Then there's this one chap in the group, I mentioned the tiers/classes thing and he said, "Didn't get it, if my ranger can do 100 damage, they should be tier one." well, never mind, in your mind you are...
Need to dial back my snark, or get more sugar...

@Rob It's a FATE rule that's really cool for getting players to get involved in world-buidling.
@Rob It is the mid-afternoon dip...
@Rob And the tier system is built on the premise of the size of the toolbelt, not the size of your best tool.

Rob
@SimonGill Sadly never played FATE, would very much like to
@SimonGill Indeed so, nice analogy

Though it does also relate to the effectiveness of the toolbelt. Great example is Wizard vs. Factotum
Both classes have options in every situation
But Wizard has the /best/ options

Rob
3:33 PM
I only just encountered the system recently; it's a very good idea.
To the point for my homebrew PF game I removed the wizard class (story based)

Yeah, it is. There's a lot of pointless controversy about the tier system, though.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth As in "who goes where"?

And unfortunately a lot of folks get the wrong message from it because they forget that the tier for a CLASS is based on theory, but the tier for a BUILD can be different

Rob
I see that as largely pointless, one tier up or down what's the point? The idea's the important thing.

@Rob - No, as in, "NO! NO! THIS SYSTEM IS FEEELTHY LIE AND THOSE WHO USE IT DEFECATE ON GRAVES OF FOREFATHERS!"

3:35 PM
@Rob It is a nice system. I really need to get a regular game going.

@Rob - No, not just one tier. Like, a very common Wizard build is Tier 4

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Ahhh, the foaming rabid squirrel argument.

Which is a three-tier drop
There's a T4 samu-WHY build that I make use of every now and then - that's a two-tier bump

Build influences some classes more heavily than others, I'll admit

3:36 PM
@Lord_Gareth Heh - the analogy starts to break down a bit if you get too involved.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Well builds are as and maybes; I tend to think of it as ~possibility~ for that class, you can make a Tier 7 Wizard if you really wanted.

Indeed - and the tier of a class is 100% about those possibilities

@Lord_Gareth sort of, clearly

It's just that many folks think that if you aren't playing a class precisely up to that possibility you are somehow Doin' It Wrong
When the first command of optimization was, is, and remains - Stay At an Op Level That Is Good For the Group
2

@Lord_Gareth So, basically, people forget that the group provides constraints as well. And they aren';t all mechanical.

3:38 PM
Correct

Rob
@Lord_Gareth And play the character you want to play with the persona and picks you want with all that roleplaying n' stuff

Indeed ^_^

I once played with a group that ignored racial HD when calculating ECL.

the arguments about tiers are stupid, yes

People forget that playing a very high-op concept in a mid-op or low-op group is being rude - just like they forget that playing a very low-op concept in a high-op group is rude.

3:39 PM
I regularly blew past them in terms of CharOp by focusing on non-combat optimization, where their racial HD stopped mattering.
Had to retire three different PCs because they made the rest of the party useless.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Ar; it's a party based game after all :)

@Lord_Gareth I find more people – particularly those arguing about tiers in the first place – have the second issue. Some people seem to think it is their right to play some underpowered useless character for the roleplay!

@Lord_Gareth why would you link me his posts? You know I refuse to read them

Because my rage froths over at his deliberate and persistent ignorance and holier-than-thou attitudes?
But also because it's too early in the morning for me to do first-level DC pumping while I'm hung over

3:42 PM
it doesn't matter
like, OK, so the DC on a 1st-level spell's probably only about 14
the Fighter's Will save is very unlikely to be even +1

Up to 16 if you can Gray Elf it

so we're talking about a dramatically better-than-even chance
you could get 17 with Spell Focus or something, too
but you should be targetting saves that range from about -1 to +1
it's not a guarantee like Wizards might get at higher levels

And then, of course, there is Grease

but it's still statistically likely

Which targets the save of "Screw you bro, I'm Grease."

3:43 PM
aha, yes, there is grease
42
A: What makes grease a good spell?

KRyanGrease is a phenomenal spell for its spell slot, especially once you get a few Caster Levels under your belt so that it lasts. For many, grease is the go-to 1st-level combat spell after the first few levels.1 There are a number of reasons for this. Area Effect Grease has a goodly-sized area, t...

^ still my highest-rated answer

Of course, the bit that is really getting to me is where he addresses ONLY CHARM PERSON
And then does so REALLY BADLY

Rob
Grease is a fantastic spell; the only way it could be better is if you got a free cocktail when you cast it.

@Rob - Remind me to tell you about Martini Mage

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Booze-mage? I'm interested :)

why not just tell him now? I feel like that's the third time you've told people here to remind you to tell them

3:45 PM
@Rob I'm tempted to offer a chat-room game of FATE on here. I know @Cat was interested in working out the system too.

@SimonGill maaaan, interest but tiiiime
sadness

@SimonGill That sounds like something I'd like to be in on if I could manage it.

@KRyan - Because I am currently prepping a "You jackass would you shut the hell up about your 'fighters are good at combat' crap because they're not," post on Rogue

I really want to try out FATE properly
@Lord_Gareth have I told you that my latest char for latest Flickergame is an Orc Fighter 6?

@KRyan - Do you know if by RAW a "Friendly" being (such as one that is Charmed) will still continue to make attacks on you, even if they're non-lethal attacks?

Rob
3:47 PM
@SimonGill You should cast around for interest :)

@Lord_Gareth the word is not technically defined but anyone who would include nonlethal attacks in its definition is completely asinine

Yes, but you know what you're doing w/r/t Fighter and you are furthermore not under the impression that they are highly talented at fighting in a universe where magic is more common than water.

@Rob Already got a couple of nibbles ;)
Next thing would be working out a good time slot so people in all the time zones can join in. Yay for flexible working hours!

@Lord_Gareth Orc Fighter 6
also, my character sheet is the bestest, if I do say so myself

"charm person specifically states that the charmed person retains his own will and must be convinced to do things. Further, even Helpful characters can still hate your guts, and charm person only puts you in "friendly" territory.

In the middle of a battle with goblins on all sides, the goblin wizard casting charm person on the fighter can expect the fighter to try and subdue him and the other goblins rather than kill them, but he'd have to be a heck of a diplomancer to convince the fighter to actually switch sides, turn on his allies, or even just stop fighting.

3:49 PM
casting charm person in the middle of combat is very difficult and doesn't work well; you cast it before combat

@Dampes8n That's all the rolls from a single session. I've asked him to continue recording his rolls, but he's across the ocean now so I can't be sure he will.

Rob
@KRyan Yarp - it's a utility spell

and yes, the Fighter may be influenced only so far as "c'mon guys, we don't have to kill them" since he does not lose his former loyalty

@Lord_Gareth Charm Person doesn't change their existing states though - so for a while it's like being caught between two violently argumentative friends.

but it specifically says best friend

3:50 PM
Don't have a group to play with right now, but we'll see.

Oh certainly

Rob
Isn't talking a quasi-free action as well?

I think it's not unreasonable to expect the Fighter, if he really fails all his saves, to at least refuse to fight them

But how many of you folks would violently, albeit nonlethally, beat your best friend down and oppose his interests?

@SomeGuy I don't think many people here know you're That Guy.

3:51 PM
@Rob not Diplomacy though

Rob
@KRyan Ah righty :)

@BESW I'm That Guy

which guy?

@KRyan This guy:

Rob
@Lord_Gareth You'd expect them to try and stop the fight, "Hey guys, we're all friends here, let's calm down - not go nuts."

3:51 PM
A preliminary step: Record your DM's dice rolls for science! You may be succumbing to confirmation bias in suspecting he rolls too many 20's - you might just be noticing them more, or maybe you roll fewer than average! @BESW knows a player who always seems to roll badly, but we were never sure until he started keeping track of the rolls and we examined them. 45% of his d20 rolls were between 1 and 5! Unless you can be sure it's not just your imagination, you might be jumping at shadows. — Jonathan Hobbs 14 hours ago

but anyway, no, charm person is not going to get someone to switch sides
@Rob this, however, yes

Rob
@KRyan Nice character sheet formatting btw

@Rob did you happen to hover over, say, my Strength score?

Rob
@KRyan Didn't know there was hover :)

@Rob yeah, every number on the sheet may have a hover if it's got bonuses, telling you where they're from and what type they have
and it correctly handles stacking/not stacking

Rob
3:53 PM
@KRyan Even nicer then :)

and all of the racial features/class features/feats can be clicked on to get their full rules text

Rob
@KRyan And at low level, sleep and color spray FTW
Plus grease o' course

@KRyan It's been a while, but as I recall the attitude charts are so poorly defined that it's really a GM call.

@Rob truth, though they are Enchantment and Evocation, which are problematic
@BESW I don't think charm person even really references those anyway

Rob
@KRyan Yar, depends what specialisation hat you have on

3:55 PM
Ooooh, Dungeoncrasher
I thought Color spray was Illusion?
