@Fólkvangr À sa décharge, je trouve qu'il effectue constamment un travail de réflexion en amont de ses questions. Il essaie de trouver par lui-même, et ses demandes sont pour la plupart des demandes de précision. Les séries TV sont, comme on le sait, un excellent moyen de progresser dans une langue, et j'aime voir quelqu'un faire autant d'efforts pour s'améliorer. Ses questions resteraient pertinentes même sans le contexte cinématographique, vous ne trouvez pas ?

➡️ Hello, I'm not sure, but I guess "après" doesn't have any preposition, while "avant" has the preposition "de" and so we say "avant de", but "après". If this is right, why does one say:
3️- Quatorze vient après treize.
4️- Dix-neuf vient avant vingt.
(as you see, "après" still has not any preposition, while "avant" doesn't have the preposition "de" anymore.)

@Dimitris For my part, I'm having a harder time with routines beyond the bare minimum and the idea of screen time as a pastime now that work is 100% online, so I don't read through random questions as often, but the answer seems fine and I've upvoted. I wonder if others are in a similar bind; has SO released any stats on usage changes since mid-March?

@Qàtrè In your first two examples, consider that "avant" comes before a verb whereas "après" comes before a noun.

Before a noun, neither one requires any connector:
avant le travail, après le travail

Before a verb, for some odd historical reason, *avant* evolved to precede the infinitive using *de* (a typical connector for infinitives):
avant de travailler

Whereas *après* evolved to precede a perfect tense:
après avoir travaillé

(translated differently in English, too:
avant le travail -> before work
après le travail -> after work
avant de travailler -> before working
après avoir travaillé -> after working OR after having worked)

You can also say « avant d'avoir travaillé » (before having worked) but it's kind of redundant

Finally, you can also use them both with subordinate clauses
avant qu'il travaille / avant qu'il ne travaille / avant qu'il aura travaillé / etc
après qu'il a travaillé

In such cases « avant » prefers the subjunctive (it hasn't happened yet) but après the indicative
