During my morning working shift yesterday I translated The Cyclist (1899) by John Joy Bell into Russian.

Q: Is there an in-universe explanation for the contradictory language and euphemisms used in *The Screwtape Letters*?

Mikayla Eckel CifreseFor example, terms like "the patient," "our Father below," and Screwtape's affectionate language towards Wormwood. It actually strikes me as oddly similar to the "doublethink" used in George Orwell's 1984. In the latter case, however, the purpose is obvious — manipulation, control, and deception...

@Bookworm I see that there isn't a tag yet. Would it be worthwhile to add one to this question, perhaps replacing ?
@DLosc yes on both counts: the former tag is necessary, the latter misapplied.
@Tsundoku what does "aestating" mean?
nvm, I looked it up. "becoming dormant during dry seasons."
@DLosc done

@verbose @Tsundoku Shouldn't that be "aestivating"?
21:00
@Randal'Thor That's becoming dormant during the summer, I believe. Are summers always dry? Not in India ... we have the dry part of summer and the wet part
21:20
I checked in a few dictionaries that said "summer or dry season", whereas aestate didn't show any English meaning.
21:43
@Randal'Thor I made up the word. It will take some time before dictionaries pick it up ;-)

Q: Where is Hardy's Carriford?

Shawn WillmentIn Desperate Remedies, Thomas Hardy writes of a village named Carriford, being close to Kingston Maurward I assumed it to be Stinsford but Hardy refers to this place as Mellstock. Did Hardy make up this location?
