Q: What would be the diet on the Lord of the Flies's island?

PiomicronIf there were an uninhabited tropical island (assumed to be in the Pacific) with the conditions and history necessary for pigs, and pink granite, what would the boys likely have eaten? It's mentioned that they predominately eat fruit and nuts, with the occasional fish or crab. Later, they start e...

@Bookworm Why is this question gone?
it says the poster self-deleted
so I guess they decided they shouldn't have asked it after someone commented about how this isn't a forum
Guess so
@KnightwantsLoongback It's really not my cup of tea.

Q: What's exactly meant by "on its homeward journey" in "The Just Men of Cordova"?

Ahmed SamirIn chapter 12 of The Just Men of Cordova (1917) by Edgar Wallace, the author was describing the situation of two horses, Nemesis and Timpolino, in the betting on horse racing: The field was at the starting-post: “Your horse is drawn in the middle,” she said. He put up his glasses. He could see t...

@Tsundoku I posted it as a question. Surely it'll be trivially easy for someone who knows either language.

Q: What language was Tagore's "This Dog" written in?

Rand al'ThorDisclaimer: this is going to be a stupidly obvious question for anyone who speaks either Hindi or Bengali, but with zero knowledge of either language I can't really eke out an answer. Apologies if this comes across as a silly question. Rabindranath Tagore's poem "This Dog" on AllPoetry.com is giv...

@EddieKal I assume someone posted their homework question, noticed that this question would not work well here in its current form, and decided to delete it, rather than wait for two separate questions to be answered.

@Bookworm It took me some time to notice that "999" was the username and not the rep count.

Q: Why do the Pern novels use regular words as profanity?

bobbleIn the Pern novels, characters use words that would normally be innocuous as profanity. Some prominent examples are "shards" and "shells". There's a list of in-universe curse words that I found at the back of Dragonflight: PERNESE OATHS By the Egg By the first Egg By the Egg of Faranth Scorch i...

@Bookworm Well I still think it can't be Hindi, given that it's written in Bengali letters, but I can't read Bengali so I can't claim with certainty that it's in Bengali, or, indeed, that it's not total nonsense that isn't in any language.

What are the guidelines for answer acceptance here? On Puzzling I would just accept the first answer, sometimes requiring a solution path. I'm unsure of how long to wait before accepting the answer I've received for my Pern question. Would waiting be beneficial, or bad?
It's always a good idea to wait at least a few days after the first answer was posted. Some people are quick the accept the first answer that makes sense, but better answers may be posted after that. Some people never unaccept the first answer, even after a better one was posted.
That's the general idea I've gotten from puttering around various SE sites, good to know that it applies here as well
